A Stormy War of Position: An Investigation of the Use of Human Right to Water and Sanitation Discourse to Legitimate Accumulation by Dispossession

Karunananthan, Meera January 2015 (has links)
This thesis examines the corporate appropriation of human right to water and sanitation discourse. David Harvey’s concept of accumulation by dispossession provides the political- economic basis for this analysis while enabling a discussion of water conflicts that looks at neoliberalization strategies beyond the privatization of services. Inspired by Gramsci’s notion of a “war of position”, this thesis investigates the role of corporate appropriation of human right to water and sanitation discourse in legitimating strategies of accumulation by dispossession. Through content and critical discourse analysis of publications of a corporate policy consortium called the 2030 Water Resources Group the investigation concludes that this lobby group simultaneously undermines human rights while actively using key elements of rights discourse to advance its neoliberal water policy objectives.

Descartova mechanistická fyziologie a Harveyho objev krevního oběhu / Descartes' Mechanistic Physiology and Harvey's Discovery of the Circulation of Blood

Čejka, Vojtěch January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to show in what way the mechanistic philosophy of René Descartes allowed him to accept William Harvey's discovery of the circulation of the blood, while at the same time prevented him from accepting his explanation of the movement of the heart. In the introductory section we mention some of the basic notions concerning the state of natural philosophy in the second half of the 16th century which are closely related to the themes of the thesis. Both authors we are concerned with are also presented. The second, historicaly oriented section focuses on Aristotle's, Galen's and Harvey's opinions on the role and motion of the heart and blood in the human body. The aim is to describe how Harvey's 1628 treatise De motu cordis allowed to resolve the proliferating problems faced by the Galenist tradition in the 16th and the early 17th century. The third section presents the exposition of the introductory chapters of Descartes' 1633 treatise Le Monde in which he introduces the basic notions of his new mechanistic philosophy. Among these are the three types of particles, the plenist conception of the world, the omnipresence of circular motions and the relationship between God, natural laws and motion in the world. The fourth section is dedicated to Descartes' a Harvey's point of...

NORMAL DÉSIR 2

Harvey, Jean-Philippe 11 January 2019 (has links)

Ganic, Kenan January 2013 (has links)
Hyllie, a large scaled urban development project in the Southern of Malmö, hopes to contribute to Malmö Municipality’s goal to be the worlds greatest in sustainable development year of 2020. The city of Malmö together with 20-something developers are building at the urban development area and by now the area is full of large scaled buildings and the pile of construction permits for a new modern bathhouse and offices, cultural centers, hotels and thousands of homes are constantly increasing. Just because of all the large-scale investments in this area, I examine the cultural aspects of urban planning in Hyllie in this paper. By studying the struggle for meaning and how it is negotiated between the municipality and commercial entities through a cultural analysis tool build mostly with geographer David Harvey’s theories about a transformation in urban governance from managerialism to entrepreneurialism, I come to the conclusion that the city of Malmö is leaning towards a planning strategies where the focus is on economic growth. As the post-industrial society is highly digitalized offering constant access to information I also look at how the media reports on the creation of meaning in new Hyllie. A transformation is revealed, showing that media year after year becomes less critical and even starts to contribute to the image of Hyllie as the city of Malmö and developers want.

Destructive Capitalism, an Investigation on the Inner Logic of Capital

Saavedra, Roque Martin 18 November 2008 (has links)
This research, while centered upon capital development, will concentrate its efforts on explaining the urgent contingencies behind its destructive aspects. If capitalism in order to advance must destroy the past, what are the sources and effects of this inexorable tension between creation and destruction? Moreover, what are the principles of this contradictory logic that determines destruction in order to make progress? This research will not investigate the totality of the destructive history behind capitalism. The time frame in analysis only covers the emergence of neo-liberalism at the beginning of the 1970s until today. This particular choice responds to the fact that neo-liberalism in itself is a strong example of the more destructive aspects of capitalist practice. I will not focus this research on a particular place, or a particular society. Instead, I will treat the topic from two theoretical perspectives, Joseph Schumpeter's notion of creative destruction and David Harvey's theory of geographical uneven development, along with his theorization of the spatial/temporal fix. Questions of space and development associated with capital will also integrate this research. What this research will show is that the inexorable confluence between creation and destruction in capitalist practices to counter the overwhelming perspective of capitalism, as a progressive force in social terms, is an eminently political task that requires, not only imagination, but also, the necessary connection between apparent unconnected issues in order to unravel the perplexities of contemporary political and social thought. / Master of Arts

Kulturhus kring 2020 : Kunskap, möten och tillväxt i Askersund, Värnamo, Skellefteå och Karlskrona / Cultural centres from around 2020 : Knowledge, meetings and growth in Askersund, Värnamo, Skellefteå and Karlskrona

Andersson, Anita January 2020 (has links)
Introduction. The purpose is to discuss values, expressed in the architecture and planning documents of four recent cultural centres in Sweden, and how these values influence the public libraries. Method. The method is a case study using content analysis of documents from all four cities and empirical findings from observations in Askersund and Värnamo. Analysis. The theoretical perspectives are based on the theories of fields and doxa by Pierre Bourdieu and the theory of space by David Harvey. Results. From around the year 2000 cultural centres were built increasingly with the aim to support creativity and place branding. Twenty years later that trend has been strengthened and cultural centres are being built as architectural portraits of cities, supporting tourism, innovation and economic growth. Town squares are symbols for meetings, markets and democracy. The names and physical appearance of Sjöängen, Gummifabriken, Sara kulturhus and Karls Krona represent local history and the architects have also expressed values about sustainability and functional estetics. The public libraries seem to benefit from being located within these new cultural centres as regards to lending statistics and programmes for the public. The mission for democracy, the principle of free entry and the intrinsic value of literature, however, must be preserved in today´s amusement park like style of cultural centres. This is a two year master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

F.W. Harvey and the First World War : a biographical study of F.W. Harvey and his place in the First World War literary canon

Repshire, James Grant January 2016 (has links)
F.W. Harvey’s poetry was more popular during the First World War than many – if not most – of those whom we celebrate as ‘the war poets’ today. He is unique among the poets of that war for his insight into the life of the British POW in Germany, and for the influence of his work in the first of the British trench journals, the 5th Gloucester Gazette. Yet, he has received little national attention since his death in 1957, and scholarly work on his life is lacking, largely owing to a deficit of publicly-available primary sources and original material regarding his life and works. This has resulted in a failure to place him properly within the literary canon of the First World War. The recent discovery of Harvey’s papers allows us to examine his life and his contemporary cultural impact, and more fully to evaluate the value of his work and what it tells us about the First World War experience. Using Harvey’s papers, this biographical study will reconstruct the historical details of his life as they relate to the First World War. Concurrently, it will develop our understanding of his war-related work. This will demonstrate Harvey’s influence during the war, first as a trench poet, then as the poetic voice of the British POW. It will also examine how Harvey’s work continued to be affected by the war in the years after the armistice. The result will be a greater appreciation of the life and importance of a First World War poet whose voice was in danger of being lost to time.

Making Community: Student Subculture and Cultural Variance in the Harvey Mudd College Inner Dormitories

Mabon, Kinzie T 01 January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the student subculture and cultural variances of that subculture represented by the dorm practices of the inner dorms on Harvey Mudd College’s campus. Using Dick Hebdige’s theory of subcultures and David Schneider’s theory of cultural variances, this work examines the ways that the four inner dorms support and reproduce the Harvey Mudd College student subculture so that all students share values and behaviors that are unique to the Harvey Mudd student population. After first establishing the presence of a Harvey Mudd College student subculture, viewing the dorm practices of North, South, East, and West dorms at Harvey Mudd College through the lens of four main values shared by Harvey Mudd students presents the case that each of the four inner dorms work to provide students of all backgrounds the opportunity to be participating members of the Harvey Mudd student subculture.
