The Impact of a Rural School-Based Health Center on Students and Their Families in Sneedville, Tennessee: A Case Study.

Belcher, Michael D. 01 May 2004 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to describe the impact that the school-based health center in Sneedville, Tennessee had on students who attended Hancock County High School. The study documented how the school-based health center affected students, families, and the community of Sneedville. Case study methodology was used to determine if the school-based health center impacted school attendance, mental and emotional health, sexual practices, and overall quality of life for students and their families. Data were collected through 25 interviews with health center stakeholders. The methodology included working with the staff at the school-based health center to identify the key players and key center users over the seven years of the center's existence. An interview protocol was designed for each of the seven groups that were interviewed. Data were collected from current and former students, parents of current and former students, school counselors, teachers, and the school nurse. Students who attended Hancock County High School as well as their parents were impacted by their direct access to primary comprehensive health care services. Benefits to parents included a reduction of time in missed work and lower medical care costs for students without health insurance. The center promoted and improved school attendance while distributing valuable health education information to students and parents. Because the city of Sneedville has only one medical center and no hospital, the school-based health center served the rural residents well. Beginning as one of only three such centers in the United States, the school-based health center endured and evolved into a full-service, comprehensive health care provider. The center is located in an isolated region of Northeast Tennessee; the location added to the center's impact on the residents. This study could provide a model for rural communities seeking ways to serve the health care needs of youth. In this time of economic instability and educational accountability, this school-based health center appeared to impact student care, thus allowing students to be more capable and ready to learn.

Reducing Non-urgent Utilization Of The Emergency Department By Self-pay Patients: Analysis Of The Impact Of A Community-wide Provider Network

van Caulil, Karen Karen 01 January 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine whether a coordinated and comprehensive system of care for the uninsured changed the behavior of the uninsured by decreasing non-urgent utilization of the emergency departments within a large, urban county. The literature on emergency department trends and interventions designed to decrease "inappropriate" or non-urgent use of the emergency departments was reviewed and links to relevant theoretical concepts were identified. Utilization data from six emergency departments and six federally qualified health centers were evaluated. Secondary data over a three-year time period were abstracted from patient and organizational records at the hospitals and federally qualified health centers. The utilization data from the emergency departments and health centers were compared. The analysis revealed a significant change in the number of non-urgent visits by self-pay patients at the emergency departments when the health centers expanded. A 32.2 percent decrease in utilization of the emergency departments by self-pay patients was found. Non-parametric tests demonstrated significant differences in the population seen at the emergency departments and the clinics over the three-year study period. Regression analysis demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in non-urgent, self-pay visits at the emergency departments as a result of the increase in self-pay visits at the federally qualified health centers. Further analysis includes forecasting the impact of future federally qualified health centers on emergency department utilization. Recommendations for future research include evaluation of the increased numbers of non-urgent transports from the local emergency medical system by self-pay patients as well as the design of a pilot study to look at the effectiveness of transporting these patients to the federally qualified health centers for care instead of to the local emergency departments.

Inställningen till digitala vårdcentraler : En kvalitativ intervjustudie kring vilka faktorer som påverkar yngre vuxnas acceptans av digitala vårdcentraler / Attitudes towards digital health centres : A qualitative interview study on the factors influencing younger adults' acceptance of digital health centres

Johansson, Rasmus, Lindquist, Martin January 2022 (has links)
Digital healthcare in Sweden is constantly evolving and consists of several modern technologies that can help the society. According to popular magazines and authorities, Sweden is facing a problem, the physical primary care in Sweden is overloaded and the society is struggling to keep up. Sweden aims to become the best in the world at using digital tools to develop healthcare, that e-health will flourish for both the society and the individual. When such large projects are started, it is important that there is an underlying acceptance by the society, is this project a good proposal or will it be pushed aside by the society. The aim of this study is to investigate younger adults' acceptance on e-health with a focus on the digital health centre. In order to answer this purpose through the survey, the study will outline the factors that influence younger adults' acceptance of digital health centers. The study was conducted using the theoretical framework UTAUT (Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology) which is a model to measure acceptance. This framework has been the basis for analyzing the collected empirical data. The study has identified four factors that have an impact on the acceptance of the digital health centre. The four factors are experience, voluntariness, agility and efficiency and goal achievement.
