This thesis examines the reality television (RTV) series Here Comes Honey Boo Boo (HCHBB) as a rhetorical text in and through which the cultural significance of race, class, and gender stereotypes—and the meanings they hold for different individuals and groups—are actively contested and negotiated. I argue that recurrent themes of symbolic transgression of hierarchical structures in HCHBB operate as a modality through which cast and audience(s) alike might make or interpret potentially subversive/resistant meanings. This focus on the RTV series as a dynamic site for making and contesting meaning—rather than a static text encoded/decoded by members of the discrete categories of producers and consumers—enables critical attention to the discursive and affective elements at work in HCHBB without forsaking analysis of the political and material frames in which they circulate. These frames are explored throughout a brief history of the RTV genre and an overview of the scholarship that has engaged it. Ultimately, I argue that while HCHBB and the genre of RTV may potentially provide the opportunity to challenge class antagonism and discrimination, it also perpetuates structural, material inequality. By linking themes of symbolic transgression as they operate in and through the text with Kenneth Burke’s (1969) analysis of hierarchy and mystification of class relations, I show how HCHBB doubly participates in the stratification of economic class when symbolic transgression is offered as an affront to social class morality rather than pervasive structural, material inequality. Despite an ethos of rebellion against bourgeois norms, HCHBB displaces rather than cultivates critical class consciousness by encouraging performances of redneck identity which also consign the Shannon/Thompson family to their fate as working class celebrities. / text

Rust Belt and Other Stories is a collection of stories exploring characters in the bleak moments when social oppression challenge the perceived meaning of their lives. The disenchantments are influenced by distinctive settings, which set the tone for the stories. Place is an active force shaping the protagonists and adding to the nuance of character relationships, dialogue and philosophical outlooks.

Thesis advisor: Mark Kazarosian / In November of 2020, the Life Works Here Initiative was launched in Northwest Arkansas targeting the relocation of highly educated remote workers - especially in the sectors of tech and STEAM, science, technology, engineering, the arts and math - to find young talent to pipeline for the future and fill demand gaps in high-tech, high-wage industries and jobs. This paper will investigate characteristics that may have impacted an individual's descision to move into Arkansas following the implementation of the Life Works Here initiative using panel data on migration decision. I found that the characteristic of being a female on average decreases the probability of migrating to Arkansas by -.0001739 percentage points, relative to males, ceteris paribus. I also found that older aged individuals initially increase in the probability of moving into Arkansas until 41.732 years of age, where they will then decrease the probability of relocating to Arkansas. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2023. / Submitted to: Boston College. <p>Föreliggande studie hade som syfte att undersöka vilken betydelse organisationen Here 4 U hade haft för sina medlemmar under skoltiden och senare i livet. I studien har kvalitativa forskningsintervjuer genomförts och tillsammans med tidigare forskning utgjorde de grunden för föreliggande studie. För djupare förståelse i den avslutande analysen har Salutogen teori och empowerment som teori använts. I studien framkom att Here 4 U hade haft stor betydelse för sina medlemmar både under skoltiden och senare i livet. Det visade sig att medlemskapet under skoltiden bidragit till ökad trygghet, bättre trivsel i skolan och känslan av att kunna påverka sin skolsituation. Detta bidrog i sin tur till ett bättre studieresultat.  Även senare i livet hade medlemskapet i Here 4 U haft betydelse för medlemmarnas sociala förankring i samhället. Det handlade bland annat om inställning till droger, kriminalitet men också ett ökat engagemang i sociala frågor.  Slutsatser från studien visade att förebyggande insatser som Here 4 U kunde fylla ett behov för ungdomar i skolan både på kort sikt och på lång sikt.  Det förbättrade inte bara trivseln och känslan av delaktighet i skolan utan kunde även bidra till förankring i samhället genom socialt engagerat beteende vilket kunde leda till ökad hälsa hos ungdomar.</p> / <p>The aim of this study was to examine what meaning the organization Here 4 U has had for the members during their school years and what influence this had later on in life. The study was based on qualitative interviews along with previous research on topics relevant for the subject. For deeper understanding of the result of the study, the theory of empowerment and the Salutogenic theory have been used. The study showed that Here 4 U did have a significant meaning for their members during and after their school years. The membership during the school years provide an increased comfort, a sense of feeling secure in school and the ability to make an impact on their school situation. All together this improved the member’s results in school. To be a member in the organization had an effect on the member’s sense of belonging and will to participate in their society even after the school years. Conclusions of the study showed that prevention efforts, like Here 4 U, could fill the needs for youths during their school years and later on in life. Further conclusions of the study showed that the youth’s engagement in the society and the feeling to contribute could increase young peoples health.</p>

This is a sociological ethnography of nine people with dementia living in a private nursing home in central Scotland. It seeks to find an alternative way to view people in this situation, in a field that has been dominated by the medical modeL. By placing the people before the disease of dementia, they can be studied within the same framework as any people. For this study this framework is everyday life sociology with a focus on symbolic interactionism, ethnomethodology and dramaturgy. Additionally, by gaining the subjective perspective, we can get close to understanding meaning for these people. The ethnographic methods I use consist of participant observation and interviews. For analysis I employ NUDIST to structure the data and the thesis. The settng, Lavender Wing of Deer View Grange Nursing Home, provides context for the study. This is a culture of surveillance and routines, which can be restrictive, infantilizing and disabling for residents. Despite this culture research findings are of socially active participants. By examining relationships through an interactional framework three thematic areas developed concerned with emotions, interactions and classification. These thematic spheres demonstrate the emotional self, the interactional self and the generalized self of research informants. The emotional is concerned with the most inner and intimate self, often engaging in backstage intimacies and in thought. Significant others share with the interactional self, in frontstage performances, which are more ritualistic. The generalized self interacts with the generalized other, most often consisting of everyone in Lavender Wing and is concerned with classification and boundarydefinition. Within these spheres the described relationships are fluid and change according to the situation, and how participating actors define it. To engage in intimacies, rituals and form, and to shift between them requires social competence and active participation. People in this study demonstrate these. Despite restrictions they offer resistance to the environment and to dementia. They often make profound and metaphorical statements, to which this ethnography gives voice. The Thesis deals with the interconnection of the Gestalt approach and the Supervision. The aim of the thesis is to map and search the possible use of the principles and concepts of the Gestalt therapy in the field of offering the Supervision through the statements of experiences, attitudes, knowledges and the unique reality of six wise supervisors who know the theory and practice of the Gestalt approach. First, the Gestalt Therapy is presented, its basic principles and concepts are named. Then the Supervision is defined, its general principles are enumerated, its relation to the Psychotherapy is defined and pursuant the available resources the Supervision is viewed from the Gestalt Therapy pespective. Qualitative research which is the core of the work combines procedures of the Phenomenological method and the grounded theory. The results found during the research are presented by the paradigmatic model and the graphic model, which visualize Gestalt principles and concepts used in the supervision process. The results are accompanied by the vivid testimonies of the participants so the Thesis might inspire not only supervisors with the interest in the Gestalt Therapy.
