Teknillisestä apulaisesta laboratoriohoitajaksi:turun laboratoriohoitajakoulutuksen kehitys vuosina 1955–1990

Abstract This research explores the development of Finnish Medical Laboratory Technologists based on education given in Turku covering the years 1955–1990. The data is limited into three time periods: education lasting for one year 1955–1963, education lasting for two years 1964–1983 and education 1984–1990 based on the secondary school reform. The development of the Finnish medical laboratory technologist education was connected with development of medical and natural sciences and technology. The representatives of the medicine were of vital importance in influencing the beginning of this education. The swift from industrial to service society speeded the development. The duration of education was extended gradually from one year to four and half year education. Even in the beginning of this education the students selected into training should have at least the basic general secondary school education which was not the case with other health care staff . Especially in the beginning the students should have good health in working with health hazard environment and substances. A distinctive change took place in the relationship of cognitive and practical teaching. In the beginning the greatest part of the educational training was practical given in health laboratories and hospital wards. Gradually the cognitive teaching was transferred into the school classrooms. Also the practical training in the hospital decreased. In the beginning of the educational training took place in the different faculties and institutes of Turku University given by medical staff. Later the teaching was moved to the nursing and health care colleges and the authority to teach was given to the permanent health care staff. The decrease of the infectious diseases and the development of internal medicine and surgery reflected in the changes of the selection of laboratory investigations from the bacteriological research to the chemical research. The manual research methods developed to automatic research methods was seen with a delay in the medical technologist education. Also the quality control appeared surprisingly late in the educational training. The education and training of the laboratory technologists were attached to the education of nursing instead of technical sector of health education. The intensive increase of the social and behaviorial sciences was part of wider international development. This research adds knowledge to the planning of laboratory technologist education. The analysis of the earlier actions helps to reveal the far reaching influences of the different choices made before and to explain why the situation is what it is. / Tiivistelmä Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin Suomessa toteutuneen laboratoriohoitajakoulutuksen kehittymistä Turussa tapahtuneen koulutuksen avulla. Tutkimus rajautui vuosille 1955–1990 ja jakautui ajallisesti kolmeen jaksoon: yksivuotiseen koulutukseen vuosina 1955–1963, kaksivuotiseen koulutukseen vuosina 1964–1983 ja keskiasteen koulunuudistukseen vuosina 1984–1990. Tutkimuksen tarkastelun kohteena oli: Mitkä tekijät johtivat laboratoriohoitaja-koulutuksen käynnistymiseen ja kehittymiseen? Miten opiskelijat valittiin? Miten tietopuolinen ja käytännöllinen opetus jakaantui? Minkälainen oli opettajien pätevyys? Minkälainen oli oppisisältö? Minkälaista tutkintonimikettä käytettiin? Laboratoriohoitajakoulutuksen kehittyminen oli yhteydessä lääketieteen, luonnontieteen ja teknologian kehittymiseen. Lääketieteen edustajat olivat keskeisiä vaikuttajia laboratoriohoitajakoulutuksen alkamiselle ja kehittymiselle. Teolliseen ja palveluyhteiskuntaan siirtyminen vauhdittivat kehitystä. Koulutus piteni asteittain yksivuotisesta neljä ja puolivuotiseksi. Koulutukseen valituilta opiskelijoilta vaadittiin jo alkuaikoina muista hoitohenkilöistä poik-keavasti vähintään keskikoulun oppimäärä. Suuri osa oli kuitenkin ylioppilaita. Koulutuksen alkuaikoina vaadittiin opiskelijoilta hyvää terveyttä tartuntavaarallisen ympäristön ja terveydelle haitallisten aineiden kanssa työskenneltäessä. Koulutuksen alkuaikoina suurin osa oli käytännöllistä opetusta terveydenhuoltoalan laboratorioissa ja vuodeosastoilla. Ajan kuluessa suhde muuttui selvästi koululla annattavan tietopuolisen opetuksen eduksi. Myös vuodeosastoharjoittelu väheni. Koulutuksen alkuaikoina tietopuolinen opetus tapahtui Turun yliopiston eri laitoksilla pääasiassa lääketieteilijöiden voimin. Myöhemmin koulutus siirtyi sairaanhoito- ja terveydenhuolto-oppilaitoksiin ja samalla vetovastuu siirtyi vakinaisille sairaanhoidon opettajille. Tartuntatautien väheneminen ja sisätautien ja kirurgian kehittyminen heijastuivat laboratorio-tutkimusvalikoiman muuttumiseen bakteriologian tutkimuksista kemiallisiin tutkimuksiin. Ihmisen elimistön tutkiminen kudos- ja elintasolta syveni solutasolle. Manuaalisten tutkimusmenetelmien kehittyminen automaatio-menetelmiksi näkyi viiveellä laboratoriohoitajien koulutuksessa. Samoin laboratorioissa voimakkaasti kehittyvä laaduntarkkailu tuli koulutukseen yllättävän myöhään. Laboratoriohoitajakoulutus määriteltiin hoitoalan koulutuksiin terveydenhuollon teknisen alan sijaan. Tämä määritteli hoidollisuutta korostavat raamit laboratoriohoitajakoulutukselle. Yhteiskunta- ja käyttäytymistieteiden voimakas lisääntyminen oli osa laajempaa kansainvälistä kehitystä. Opiskelijoita tuli kasvattaa myös ammatillisissa koulutuksissa yhteiskuntatietoisiksi, osallistuviksi ja sivistyneiksi kansalaisiksi ja perheenjäseniksi. Muiden maiden laboratoriohoitajakoulutukseen ne eivät kuitenkaan sisältyneet. Tämä tutkimus antaa lisää tietoa laboratoriohoitajakoulutuksen suunnitteluun. Aikaisemman toiminnan analysoiminen auttaa näkemään, minkälaiset, kauaskantoisetkin, vaikutukset erilaisilla valinnoilla on ollut, miksi ollaan siinä tilanteessa missä ollaan.

Medeltid i centrum : europeisering, historieskrivning och kulturarvsbruk i norrländska kulturmiljöer

This thesis aims to shed light upon three related research areas with the medieval period at their core: medieval Europeanization, the historiography of medieval places, the importance of the cultural environment and medieval period for the present day. By these means several current research angles are integrated within medieval research, the history of science and cultural heritage research. Six investigations of medieval central places in Ångermanland and Medelpad in northern Sweden are used to exemplify these issues. The use of hermeneutic theory emphasises the relationship between the present day community, the individual and the interpretation of history. The sites presented in the thesis represent the entire medieval period from the 11th Century to the start of the 16th Century. Two of them – Kvissle chapel and “Skelettåkern” (=The Skeleton Field) in Björned – functioned as private Christian churches or graveyards; two were important harbours – Sankt Olofshamn (=Saint Olof’s Harbour) and Kyrkesviken (=Church bay); two functioned as military castles or fortifications – Styresholm/ ”Pukeborg” and Bjärtrå stronghold. In addition to these, four medieval stone parish churches have been examined: the old church at Alnö in Medelpad, and the churches of Torsåker, Boteå and Grundsunda in Ångermanland. The Europeanization of Norrland is discussed with reference to aspects such as religious transition and parish formation, monetarization and changes in household structure, trade specialization and administrative territorialization. Central places have played an important role in this process. Historiography illuminates how, and in which contexts, knowledge and understanding of history and medieval central places has developed and been communicated. This includes the use of place names and the oral narration of history, authorship and scientific research into local history. A number of primary school teachers, adult education college (‘folk high school’) teachers and priests were particularly important for the growth of local historical research around the turn of the 20th century. The use of cultural heritage is illustrated with a discussion of how the medieval cultural environments in Ångermanland and Medelpad have been interpreted and used in recent years. This includes aspects such as signposting, teaching and research activities, mass media attention, amateur history plays and similar performances, and the formation of various types of society. These three aspects of Norrland’s medieval period, together with the use of a cultural heritage perspective, form a broader holistic picture of the social role of scientific research and the cultural environment, where local interest in history is important for regional development.

This study corresponds to a historiographical examination of the research which elected historic time in the History teaching as subject matter last decade. It tries to rebuild meanings of the experience constitutive of historic time as a specific research field involving history and its intersection with other fields of knowledge, based on authors who point out a rupture in the linear history and deconstruction of the idea of progress as a historical norm and, so, support a conception of historic time founded on the individuals¿ concrete experience. Given their goals, theoretical, methodological approaches, and conclusions, these researches have revealed that historic time as subject matter is constituted according to different possibilities of investigation, whether it is into the perspective of grasping how students understand, develop, and represent time notions or into the perspective of researchers worried about the place historic time occupies in curricular proposals, in teachers¿ education and representations, as well as in History textbooks. Zeitnah zur Vorlesung erscheinen die Vorträge als Einzelhefte in einer um einen bio-bibliographischen Anhang sowie die nötigsten Nachweise ergänzten und erweiterten Druckfassung. Die Reihe ‚Köpfe für Chemnitz‘ versteht sich damit zugleich als Archiv der neuesten fakultären Denkbewegungen. Die Drucklegung der Reihe erfolgt in der Regie des Dekanats.

Gender division in American Baptist families : second and third shifts

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The division of labor in households is an important topic in marital relationships. Families are not static; they are in a constant state of change. Employment, individual family members’ schedules, and religious beliefs can impact how couples divide household tasks. This particular study draws on in-depth interviews of four married couples from American Baptist churches to explore how couples within this type of church divide household tasks. The interviews focused on the management of second- and third-shift household tasks, as well as childcare. The purpose of obtaining this information was to see if the way American Baptist couples handle second-, third-shift duties, and childcare is more consistent with general population couples or more consistent with Evangelical/Conservative couples. Husbands and wives were interviewed separately to obtain individual thoughts and opinions. The interviews revealed that when it comes to second-shift tasks and child care, American Baptist couples are more in line with general population couples. As far as third-shift duties, Evangelical, general population, and American Baptist couples are all currently handling in very similar ways with the female performing the majority of third-shift tasks.

A comparison between Plato and Zoroaster : aspects of the philosophy in the Timaeus and the Gathas

Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The analysis of the system of speculative thought of Plato and Zoroaster, as found in Plato's Timaeus and Zoroaster's Gathas, seeks to compare a well-known philosophy, that of Plato, to a lesser known and often misunderstood system of speculative thought within a religion, namely Zoroastrianism. The purpose of such a comparison is to show that the speculative thought found in religion is often comparable to philosophy, as is the case in the doctrines postulated in the Gathas. It serves to illuminate the philosophy within a lesser known religion (Zoroastrianism) by comparing it to a well-known philosophy (that of Plato), and in doing so, to cast new light on both. The comparison of Plato and Zoroaster has been proposed and sometimes executed by other scholars as well. The main problem in these other comparisons, thus far, has been the fact that no historical contact or definite doctrinal influence of Zoroaster on Plato has been or is likely to be established. Though Plato might well have been familiar with Zoroastrian doctrines, this cannot be satisfactorily proven. This study does not depend on historical contact or doctrinal influence (though the possibility of the latter has been discussed), but compares the two doctrines independent of historical factors and is based solely on the striking similarities between these two systems of thought. This study has focussed on some of the basic concepts within the two doctrines, such as creation, the soul, and dualism. In this study I have emphasised the philosophical aspect of Zoroastrianism, though it is classified as a religion, because I believe that much of what has been classified as religion also incorporates speculative thought that can be analysed separately, and as a system of speculative thought it is comparable to other traditions of speculative thought, such as Greek philosophy. This comparison therefore seeks to counteract some of the assumptions about religions, and how they are studied, by focusing on the philosophical basis underlying the doctrines in the Zoroastrian religion. Another aspect to the comparison is a focus on the similarities of doctrine originating in two cultures previously held to be vastly different, namely Persian and Greek. There has previously been a tendency to consider the cultures of the classical and the ancient Near Eastern world as separate and completely distinct from each other, and in doing so, ignoring important historical contact. Although the historical interaction between these two areas has received increased attention, comparative investigations have emphasised the differences between the cultures of these regions, although similarities do abound and the comparison of analogous aspects of the various cultures could prove valuable to the study of the ancient world. Recognition of the larger context within which the various cultures of the ancient world operated can only add to the understanding of the ancient world, and pave the way for reassessing the traditions and world-views of various cultures. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die analise van die spekulatiewe denkstelsels van Plato en Zoroaster, soos uitgelê in Plato se Timaeus en Zoroaster se Gathas, beoog om 'n bekende filosofie te vergelyk met 'n minder bekende en dikwels wangeïnterpreteerde spekulatiewe denkstelsel binne 'n religie, naamlik Zoroastrisme. Die doel van so 'n vergelyking is om te demonstreer dat die spekulatiewe denkstelsel wat binne 'n religie gevind kan word dikwels vergelykbaar is met 'n filosofie, soos die geval is met die leerstellings/denkstelsels wat uitgelê word in die Gathas. Changes in Income Inequality Under Democratic and Republican Governors

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / I examined a panel of all 50 states over a period of 30 years between 1981 and 2010, estimating a random effects model to examine the relationship between the party of a state’s governor and changes in pretax and transfer income inequality. Though the literature has quite consistently shown that income inequality increases more quickly under Republican governors or when policies favored by Republicans are implemented, I find no evidence to support this, though this is perhaps because I did not allow a long enough lag time for new policies to have an effect. I did, however, find that pretax income inequality increases more quickly under Democratic presidents than under Republicans, in spite of the fact that all previous research shows the opposite to be true. I suspect that this unusual finding is the result of a quirk in my 1981-2010 time frame, namely the effects of the shift in welfare policy under the Clinton administration in the 1990s.
