"The perennial dramas of the East": Representations of the Middle East in the Writing and Art of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt

This dissertation studies depictions of the Middle East in the works of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. My discussion focuses on two prominent members of the Brotherhood—Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt—and utilizes an interdisciplinary approach that examines the poetry, prose, unpublished correspondence and journals, sketches, watercolours, and oil paintings that they produced prior to 1856. I argue that Rossetti and Hunt make use of the Middle East as a repository for and reflection of the ambiguities and ambivalences of their own positions as avant-garde artists and authors. Chapters Two and Three focus on the work of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Chapter Two examines Rossetti’s juvenilia in order to trace the ways in which the young author-artist uses the Middle East as a platform from which to work out the interplay between narrative and image, the conceptualization of the role of the author and artist, and the use of realistically depicted elements in religious painting. Chapter Three continues this discussion of Rossetti through an investigation of the 1850 edition of his poem “The Burden of Nineveh,” which centres on an encounter with an ancient Assyrian statue, and I argue that Rossetti links this artifact to the P. R. B. and uses it to critique the artistic ideals of mid-nineteenth-century England. The next two chapters shift to an investigation of William Holman Hunt’s first visit to the Middle East in 1854-6, a journey that became a focal point of the author-artist’s career. Chapter Four makes extensive use of Hunt’s unpublished diaries and letters from his sojourn in the Holy Land to destabilize the widespread conception of the artist as a staunch imperialist and the foremost English religious painter of the nineteenth century. Building on this foundation, Chapter Five looks back to the three months that Hunt spent in Egypt in 1854 and investigates the ways in which the complex experiences that the author-artist describes in his unpublished letters from this period filter into the watercolours, sketches, and oil paintings that he executed in Egypt. / Thesis (Ph.D, English) -- Queen's University, 2009-06-16 15:46:17.016

Challenging the Trinidad and Tobago panorama construct: an analysis of compositional styles of Ray Holman, Liam Teague, and Andy Narell

At the first Panorama in 1963, Anthony "Tony" Williams presented an arrangement of Slinger "Mighty Sparrow" Francisco's "Dan Is The Man (In The Van)" that would set the standard for Panoramas to come. As the competition continued arrangers like Bobby Mohammed, Earl Rodney, Jit Samaroo, and many others continued to present new ideas and techniques that became part of what is known as the "Panorama formula." In its current configuration the Panorama formula can be seen as an amalgamation of techniques introduced by past arrangers, but some argue that the formula has become too predictable and that arrangers who present works continuing to push the boundaries of the competition are often not rewarded, and perhaps punished for their efforts. This document will explore, through the history of the competition and the development of past arrangers, how the formulaic procedures of Panorama have developed. In addition, the recent works of arrangers Ray Holman, Liam Teague, and Andy Narell will be examined to see how they have challenged the expectations of the Panorama judges and the steelband community.

This document is directed toward those who have little knowledge about Trinidad, its people, the Carnival activities, and the Panorama competition. This research work should help summarize the evolution of steel drums while providing a transcription of a Panorama score for further scholarly study. The first part of this lecture document includes a brief history and evolution of Trinidad, its people, and musical developments through Carnival. The second portion reports and discusses field research with the Trintoc Invaders in preparation for the 1989 and 1990 Panorama competitions. The third part is a detailed analysis of Ray Holman's Panorama arrangement of "Life's Too Short" for the Trintoc Invaders using theme and variation as the formal structure. Information for this lecture recital document was gathered from written sources in Trinidadian libraries and field work in the Trintoc Invader's pan yard. The source materials: newspaper articles, magazine articles, and books were gathered from the University of the West Indies in St. Augustine and from the West Indian Collection of the Central Library in Belmont. In addition to these materials, interviews were conducted with some older panmen who participated in the very first steel bands. Documents, such as lists of steel bands in Trinidad and Tobago, Panorama results, and judging procedures were obtained from the Pan Trinbago headquarters in Port-of-Spain. Musical information was gathered by rehearsing and playing tenor pan with the Invaders Steel Band Orchestra located in Woodbrook and working closely with their arranger and composer, Ray Holman. Permission was granted to notate his arrangement for analysis and all rights are reserved.

Trots att Jesus är en av världens mest kända personer finns det ingen som vet hur han egentligen såg ut. Det finns inga bevarade bilder eller ögonvittnesbeskrivningar av hans yttre som kan dateras till den tid då personer som hade sett Jesus med egna ögon kan ha levt. Avsaknaden av samtida beskrivningar har möjligen bidragit till en större frihet för alla de konstnärer som avbildat honom. Många gånger verkar det som att konstnärer genom konsten framställer Jesus i sin egen avbild, eller i sin egen kulturs avbild. Förvånansvärt sällan avbildas han med tydliga judiska förtecken såsom kippa eller bönesjal. Själv har jag under lång tid undrat över detta, då vi alla vet att den historiske personen Jesus var judisk. Det var bland annat ur denna undran som idén till denna uppsats utvecklades. Jag ville veta mer om hur Jesus har avbildats i västerländsk tradition, varför han avbildades så och vilken funktion det kan ha fyllt. Därför valde jag att undersöka två av de mest spridda och inflytelserika framställningarna av Jesus från modern tid och västerländsk kultur - Light of the World av William Holman Hunt och Head of Christ av Warner Sallman.       Uppsatsens frågeställningar är: Vilka likheter och skillnader kan man se i Jesu fysiska skepnad i de båda konstnärernas avbildningar? Vad kan detta bero på eller vilka formativa faktorer påverkade deras Jesusbilder? Vad förmedlar deras konst socialt, kulturellt och religiöst?       Exempel på likheter är att båda tavlorna fick motta mycket kritik från sin tids kulturelit men blev mycket omtyckta av allmänheten. Båda tavlorna kritiserades för att visa en Jesus med “bristande maskulinitet”. Båda bilderna visar Jesus påklädd, vitklädd, vuxen, stark och frisk. Han avbildas oskadd, utan kors eller skador orsakade av korsfästelsen. Båda tavlorna visar Jesus med skägg och långt hår, Hunts Jesus har rödbrunt hår och Sallmans Jesus har mörkblont hår. Uppsatsen diskuterar de faktorer som likheterna och skillnaderna kan bero på och hur man kan tolka dessa.      En tydlig skillnad mellan de båda tavlorna är att Hunts framställning innehåller betydligt mer symbolik än Sallmans framställning. Eventuella orsaker till detta, exempelvis skillnader i de kristna traditioner konstnärerna kom ifrån samt vad konstnärerna vill säga om Jesu identitet,  diskuteras i uppsatsen. Somliga tolkar  bilderna som exempel på hur Jesus europeiserats i västerländsk konst. Hunts Jesus kan, exempelvis på grund av symboler som Aarons bröstplåt, ses som en framställning där konstnären velat inkorporera Jesu judiskhet i bilden och samtidigt visa honom som profet och präst.

This thesis describes how different 19th century poets and artists depicted elements of the medieval in their artwork as a means to contradict the rapid progress and metropolitan build-up of the Industrial Revolution. The poets discussed are John Keats and Alfred, Lord Tennyson; the painters include William Holman Hunt and John William Waterhouse. Examples of the poems and corresponding Pre-Raphaelite depictions include The Eve of Saint Agnes, La Belle Dame Sans Merci and The Lady of Shalott.
