Premenstrual syndrome and marital satisfaction

Sara, Mary Linda January 1986 (has links)
Clinical interest in PMS has existed for more than one and a half centuries. There is still no consensus about its frequency, seriousness, etiology or treatment. Its impact on marital relationships has not been an area of research interest, even though one woman in twenty, or even one every ten, may be so afflicted that her life is disrupted premenstrually month after month. This study was designed to explore this research area through the use of prospective self-reporting measuring instruments completed on a daily basis by both husband and wife in six couples over a time period of one complete menstrual cycle. The husband's perception of his wife's negative affect was one independent variable. The wife's perception of her own negative affect was the other. Six dependent variables were measured: The husband's and wife's self rating of own marital satisfaction; the husband's and the wife's perceptions of the spouse's displeasing behaviors; and the husband's and the wife's perceptions of the spouse's pleasing behaviors. A case study approach was used and, in addition to time series analysis of the daily ratings, a semi-structured exit interview was conducted with each couple so that anecdotal material could be compared and evaluated along with the quantifiable data. Because of the nature of the study, self-definition and diagnosis of PMS was chosen as the admission criterion. In addition, the wife could not be using oral contraceptives, nor could she be taking over-the-counter or prescribed medication for her PMS. Decreases in the husband's marital satisfaction were found to be associated with increases in his perception of his wife's negative affect in five of the six cases. In four of the six cases, the husband perceived an increase in displeasing behaviors by his wife when he perceived an increase in her symptoms. / Ph. D.

Invloed van tussenrolkonflik op die werkstevredenheid van egpare in dubbelloopbaanhuwelike / The influence of interrole conflict on the job satisfaction of couples in dual career marriages

Noble, Esmé 06 1900 (has links)
In order to fill the gap in existing research on the topic, this study was undertaken to establish whether a relationship exists between interrole conflict and job satisfaction in married couples with full time careers, and whether these couples experience interrole conflict and job satisfaction differently. A theoretical study regarding interrole conflict and job satisfaction was undertaken. In the empirical study these variables were measured using Need Satisfaction and lnterrole Conflict Questionnaires. No statistically significant relationships were found between interrole conflict and job satisfaction; and no statistically significant differences exist between men and women with regard to their experience of job satisfaction and interrole conflict. The research contributes towards a better understanding of interrole conflict in dual career marriages, and indicates that the lnterrole Conflict Questionnaire can deliver reliable results in the South African context. However, the results show the importance of wider, more sophisticated research. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / MCOM (Bedrysielkunde)

Partners' experiences of living with a person with dementia. : A literature review

Myrta, Arbnesha, Smoljan, Martina January 2017 (has links)
Background: Dementia is a collective term for various symptoms and changes in the brain. It is associated with increasing age but is not part of the normal aging process. There is no cure for dementia only symptomatic treatment. Dementia affects not only the individual with dementia but also the partner. Conflicts arose because of misunderstanding and lack of knowledge. The care of a person with dementia was demanding and difficulty in satisfying their own and the needs of their life partner became part of everyday life. Aim: The aim was to describe the partners ' experiences of living with a person with dementia. Method: Literature review with qualitative design and deductive approach. Antonovsky's concept of comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness has been used as a theoretical reference framework. Scientific articles have been analyzed according to Friberg's five-step model. Results: Partners experience lack of information and support from health care professionals. They feel fear, guilt and anxiety because of the uncertainty surrounding the progression of the disease and the future. Life was difficult to manage and frustrating due to loss of the person they have lived with. Despite various restrictions found in the partner situation and purpose created strategies that motivated them to continue caring for their life partner. Conclusions: The caring partners ' health, everyday lives and futures were affected by living with a demented life partner. The partners risked their own health, lost meaningful social intercourse, and felt uncertainty about the future. Despite that, many partners would continue to take care of their life partner.

Sedláčková, Magdalena January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of my thesis is to analyze the institute discharge of the debt as the way of solution of bankruptcy according to Act No. 182/2006 Coll., on Bankruptcy and its solution (Insolvency Act). The thesis concerns all the phases of the process of discharge of the debt, from the proposal of permission of the discharge of the debt until its accomplishment. The thesis focuses on relevant legal regulation and case law. I also present the institute of discharge of debt of husband and wife which is quite often used without any legal support. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The Chapter One deals with the proposal of permission of the discharge of the debt. It examines particularly the subjects who are authorized to submit it and possible decisions of the court including the reasons for its dismissal. In the next Chapter I investigate two possible ways of discharge of the debt, the liquidation of the debtor's assets and monthly payment of a specific amount. For each type the affected assets and advantages and drawbacks for the debtor are described. The possibility for creditors to vote about type of discharge of the debt is also discussed. The Chapter Three relates to the decision of approval of discharge of the debt which has specific essentials and effects and means a lot of duties for the...

Associations Among Respite Care, Uplifts, Stress, and Marital Quality of Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Down Syndrome

Easler, Jamie Kaye 01 June 2016 (has links)
This study compared the relationships among respite care, uplifts, stress, and marital quality across two different groups of caregivers' 102 heterosexual married couples with children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 111 heterosexual married couples with children with Down syndrome (DS). This study also investigated if the effect of respite care on stress and marital quality varied as a function of the amount of uplifts these caregivers experienced. Participants completed self-report surveys. Three two-group Actor Partner Interdependence Models were estimated to calculate the direct, indirect, and partner-effects among these variables. Respite care was not related to stress for either groups of parents, but it was positively associated with husband and wife marital quality for parents of children with ASD. Uplifts were negatively associated with stress and positively associated with marital quality for both husbands and wives with children with ASD, but only for wives with children with DS. Furthermore, when husbands and wives with children with ASD reported more weekly respite hours and daily uplifts, wives tended to report more daily stress. However, as husbands and wives reported less weekly respite care and more daily uplifts, wives tended to report less daily stress. Implications for these findings are discussed.
