Electromechanical systems have a huge relevance nowadays, and seeking for improvements in efficiency and performance at the lowest cost make valid to identify topological and control alternatives of these systems. The switched reluctance machine is capable to fulfill such requirements and emerges as an interesting field of research. Academics and industrial works shows that it is a promising alternative in several applications. However, this machine presents unique characteristics, like the doubly salient structure, the necessity to apply phase currents in a sequence determined by the stator/rotor pole ratio, its time variantparameters, andthestrongnonlinearcharacteristics. Suchsingularitiesmaketorque control hard, as it tends to present high ripples and makes a lot of noise. This thesis aims to contribute on switched reluctance machine modeling and drive system. A mathematical model is presented, and also a simulation model that accounts for nonlinearities, making possible to simulate the machine accurately in a computational environment. A hysteresis regulator, a PI controller and a sliding mode controller are designed and simulated. An algorithm to determine when each phase should be excited based on rotor angle is used, and a technique to change such firing angles dynamically is developed that can be used along with current control methods presented. The work also defines and presents torque sharing functions as a way to greatly reduce torque ripple. Motor and generator operation are contemplated, and both modes are illustrated in an application example.

This thesis focuses on the electronic transport properties of carbon nanotubes under hydrostatic pressures as high as one gigapascal. The originality of this work is the study of these properties on individual nanotubes. This simplifies the geometry of the system and allows studying the behaviour of each type of nanotubes. The case of a multiwalled nanotube made of at least an external semiconducting tube and an internal metallic one led us to observe i) a pressure induced change of the Schottky barrier at the gold-nanotube contacts, ii) a evolution of the intershell resistance, featuring a transition associated to the change of the nanotube cross section, iii) the decrease of the gate voltage hysteresis. Additionally, a systematic study on metallic nanotubes allowed pointing out a general behaviour of the gold-nanotube contact under pressure, which is independent on the nanotube chirality and on the pressure transmitting medium. Many of these effects can be useful to design electronic or electro-mechanical devices, such as miniature pressure sensors that would be about ten times more sensitive than some of today's standards. A simple tight-binding model is also applied to predict the evolution of the carbon nanotube electronic properties under pressure with respect to their chirality. This model allows predicting other phenomena, which could be observed in the context of a deeper and systematic study using the experimental method that was developed in this thesis.

This thesis is devoted to several aspects of geometry and morphology in wetting problems and hard sphere packings. First, we propose a new method to simulate wetting and slip on nanostructured substrates: a phase field model associated with a dynamical density theory approach. We showed omniphobicity, meaning repellency, no matter the chemical properties of the liquid on monovalued surfaces, i.e. surfaces without overhangs, which is in contradiction with the macroscopic Cassie-Baxter-Wenzel theory, can produce so-called We checked systematically the impact of the surface parameters on omniphobic repellency, and we show that the key ingredient are line tensions, which emerge from needle shaped surface structures. Geometrical effects have also an important influence on glassy or jammed systems, for example amorphous hard sphere systems in infinite pressure limit. Such hard sphere packings got stuck in a so-called jammed phase, and we shall demonstrate that the local structure in such systems is universal, i.e. independent of the protocol of the generation. For this, robust order parameters - so-called Minkowski tensors - are developed, which overcome robustness deficiencies of widely used order parameters. This leads to a unifying picture of local order parameters, based on geometrical principles. Furthermore, we find with the Minkowski tensor analysis crystallization in jammed sphere packs at the random closed packing point

Non-premixed flame stabilization is still an important issue in combustion. Addressing this issue requires to evaluate the relative importance of aerodynamic, thermal and chemical phenomena involved in the stabilization mechanisms. This thesis develops to this end an experimental approach, with a particular focus on the influence of thermal boundary conditions, examining the role of heat transfer in a twofold analysis. At first, the attachment zone of a rim-stabilized jet-flame is investigated, by careful consideration of the coupling existing between the burner lip temperature and the flame attachment location relative to the burner. Several regions have been identified according to the flame leading edge behavior, which evolves from diffusive to propagative closer to the aerodynamic stability limits. Besides, by modifying the burner thermal properties, a change has been shown in the relative roles of thermal and chemical quenching of the flame by the burner wall, depending on the burner lip temperature. Secondly, the attention is directed to transitions between different combustion regimes, namely attached and lifted flames. In particular, beyond the stable state of an attached flame, its lifting process is investigated. Examining in which conditions destabilization of the flame occurs indeed appears to be an ideal opportunity to gain insight into the aerothermochemical coupling and equilibriums existing prior to lift-off. Thus, the lifting process has been shown to be modified by the reactant initial temperature, in close relationship with the change in occurrence of localized transitory extinction events of the reaction zone.

This work focuses on the behaviour of porous triphasic media, particularly on unsaturated soils subjected to hydromechanical loading. A coupled elastoplastic constitutive model has been developed. This original model is formulated according to the following principles: (1) a constitutive law describing the behaviour of different phases (solid skeleton, liquid and gas). (2) coupling relationships between each phase. For the behaviour of the solid skeleton, a non associated elastoplastic constitutive law is adopted, with two loading surfaces: shear surface and compression cap surface. The hydric part is discribed using a formulation which allows to take into account the hysteresis effect. This model has been extended using a hydromechanical coupling relation between the air entry value and the porosity. Then the coupling is completed with the Bishop effective stress, using a new definition for the suction parameter χ. Using this formulation, the various phenomena present in the porous media behaviour under different loading can be reproduced. The developed model has been validated through a comparison with experimental data on different types of soil (sand, silt,…). This model is implemented in the french finite element code Cast3M. The analysis of specific problems, such as (1) the study of shallow foundation subjected to cyclic rain event, as well as (2) the study of slope stability, show the model capacity to reproduce the behaviour of unsaturated porous media.

The solid solutions (1-x)Na0,5Bi0,5TiO3 (NBT) – xCaTiO3 (CT) were studied by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, impedance spectroscopy and DSC. These materials have a perovskite crystalline structure. This study reveals not only the complexity but also the richness of physical phenomena in these compounds: phases transitions sequences, the Ca2+ effect on the physical-chemistry properties and the relation between dielectric properties and crystalline structure. Thereby, (1-x)NBT – xCT solid solutions (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.00) were synthesized by chemical solid route, then they were sintered by a particular procedure in order to avoid sodium and bismuth volatilization. The solid crystalline characteristics obtained prove clearly the necessity to distinguish three fields as a function of x values. First of all, for increasing x at room temperature, there is a first region so called region I (x ≤ 0.07), wherein the crystalline structure of solid solutions obtained has a space group R3c identical to that of pure NBT. For the highest values of x, (Region II, x ≥ 0.15), the solid obtained has a space group Pnma, identical to that of pure CT. Finally, between these two regions, (0.09 ≤ x ≤ 0.13), the solid solutions obtained are biphasic, R3c + Pnma, limited to appellations of the space groups formed phases. In region I, upon heating, phase transition sequence R3c → R3c + Pnma → Pnma was determined; the corresponding transition temperatures move to low values with increasing Ca2+ concentration. These solids are ferroelectric at room temperature and then develop a relaxor character, by coexistence of two phases, with increasing temperature. In region II, these solids reveal a relaxor behavior at room temperature. However, a diffuse phase transition within the orthorhombic phase Pnma has been identified; the solid changes from relaxor to paraelectric while maintaining the same crystal structure. This phenomenon was explained by the formation of micro or nano-polar regions. Region III, demonstrated for the first time, is characterized by thermal hysteresis, and explained by the relation between crystalline microstructure and dielectric properties. Finally, all our results were assembled in an original phase diagram as a function of concentration of Ca2+ dopant and temperature.

Bond Graph Model Of A Generalised Multiphase Electromagnetic Device With Magnetic Non-idealitiesRai, B Umesh 08 1900 (has links) (PDF)
The electromagnetic machines like the dc, induction, synchronous motor/generator and the transformer have an energy flow framework that is similar. All these machines deal with electrical energy in the electrical domain that is interfaced with the magnetic domain. Except for the transformer, the other machines also have one more energy interface i.e. with the mechanical domain. In all these machines, the magnetic domain acts as the silent energy manager. The electrical and the mechanical domain energies will have to pass through the magnetic domain and appropriately get routed. In recognition of the commonality of this pattern of energy flow, this thesis proposes a generalised model of a multiphase electromagnetic device wherein the dc machine, induction machine, synchronous machine and the transformers are special cases of the proposed generalised model. This is derived using bond graphs that is based on the underlining principle of Energy Flow rooted in the concept of Conservation of Energy.
A model is a set of mathematical equations representing a physical system. A model is as good as a modeller understanding of the physical system and the underlying approximation he makes while writing down the equations describing the models behaviour to the stimulus. A modelling language tool, which can cut down the approximations made by using the power of identified analogous characteristics across the physical domain, can help make a model more close to real life situation. Bond Graph is such a modelling language which is powerful enough to model the non-linear, multi-disciplinary, hybrid continuous-discrete phenomena encountered in a real life physical system. Bond graphs as a modelling tool was introduced by Professor H.Paynter at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1959. The Bond Graph methodology is based on consideration of energy flows between the ports of the components of an engineering system. Bond Graph methodology enables one to develop a graphical model that is consistent with the first principle of energy conservation without having the need to start with establishing and reformulating equations. The derivation of a mathematical model from the graphical description is automated by software tools. As a consequence, a modeller using this methodology can focus on modelling of the physical system. In the graphical representation of bond graph the vertices of a bond graph denote subsystems, system components or elements, while the edges, called power bonds, represent energy flows between them. The nodes of a bond graph have power ports where energy can enter or exit. Bond graph models are developed in a hierarchical top-down or bottom-up approach by using component models or elements from model libraries.
An electromagnetic machine is a black box having an assemblage of windings in iron resulting in a combination of input/output ports on shaft and electrical terminals. Abstraction of an machine model by a modeller matching the vision of the observer above is an ideal goal. Bond graph methodology is an appropriate tool for trying to reach this goal as it is based on object oriented modelling techniques. There have been few attempts to model electric machine in bond graph earlier. A well established DC motor bond graph has been widely used in all bond graph literature. But AC rotating machine being a higher order nonlinear system poses a tougher challenge. Here too, there have been few attempts in modelling AC machines. It is observed that majority of AC machine bond graph models have been built up from their mathematical models. But as the bond graph modelling technique is based on the unifying theory of energy exchange, better insight into the system is achievable if the model is conceptualised from its physical structure. This thesis starts from the basic theory of energy port to conceptualise the generalised model from physical correspondence.
In this thesis a Rotating Electrical Machine is studied as a physical system. The energy ports inside this physical system is identified. When a physical system receives the energy through its energy port in one energy cycle, it processes this energy in one of the three ways. The received energy is converted into useful work or it is dissipated or stored. The storage can further be classified into two ways, either as kinetic energy or as potential energy. For a rotating electric machine the input-output port for energy exchange are either in electrical or mechanical domain depending on the class of the machine. The magnetic domain across all class of electromagnetic device acts as the energy manager.
In order to capture the features of the energy jumping across the air gap in a rotating electrical machine, wherein the magnetic fields from spatially distributed windings of the stator and rotor interplay, an Axis Rotator (AR) element -a mathematical commutator, is introduced in this thesis as a new bond graph element. In a multiphase device, the energy from the various phases and spatial axes are transferred through the axis rotator element. The Axis Rotator is a critical element which helps distinguish between the various classes of electromagnetic devices. The defining features of the Axis Rotator helps in deriving the various special electromagnetic devices (such as the dc machine, induction machine, synchronous machine and the transformer) from the generalised model. The Axis Rotator exists in the magnetic domain. It naturally inherits the characteristics of the magnetic domain.
The Axis Rotator as a bond graph element is complex. In a specific case of 3φ Induction Motor an alternative bond graph model with all integral elements is developed. By one to one correspondence with the AR bond graph model, the inner component of ’AR’ can be identified. Another advantage of using this model is that saturable and non-saturable magnetic permeance can be separated out, a useful feature in the nonlinear model discussed next.
One of the most distinguishing features of the magnetic domain is the existence of Magnetic Hysteresis. Magnetic Hysteresis is a well understood and studied subject. But this physical process is wilfully ignored by the modelling community at large. The main reason for this is the difficulty of modelling a nonlinear phenomena. The bond graph modelling naturally allows the inclusion of such non-idealities within its framework. This thesis proposes the generalised model along with the inclusion of magnetic non-linearities and non-idealities into the model of the system. This inherent strength of bond graph model flows from the fact that the models in bond graph are developed from the first principles of energy conversation and the mathematical equations are derived later from the evolved graph.
The tools that are available for bond graph simulation are not adequate for power electronics systems. The existing tools do not address space vectors and frame transformations. As a consequence it is difficult to simulate the electromagnetic device models developed in this thesis. The need for a bond graph tool to address vectors and frame transformations, a common occurrence in electric machines dynamic model study was acutely felt. This necessitated a support for handling complex data class from the underlying mathematical engine of the software. MATLAB/Simulink is the commonly available mathematical tool which has a support for complex variables. Therefore during the course of this research work a new software tool box was developed which meets the need of electromagnetic machines in particular and other engineering domains in general. For developing the new bond graph simulation software, the language extender approach was chosen, as it combines the capabilities of existing popular mathematical engine with its tested graphical frontend and the flexibility of combining different modelling technique like bond graph, block diagram, equations etc. It also ensures portability as they are compiled by interpreted language compiler of the mathematical engine and are thus independent of the computer operating system. C-MEX S-function methodology was used to develop the software as it has access to lower level functions and methods of the underlying mathematical engine. This helps in speeding up the software execution time alongwith the flexibility in defining new complex elements like the Nonlinear Axis Rotator.
In conclusion, this thesis makes the following contributions: (i) The Axis rotator concept to handle space vectors and frame transformations, (ii) generalised model of the electromagnetic device, (iii) introduction of the saturation and hysteresis non-linearity in the magnetic domain, (iv) development of the bond graph toolbox to handle vector and frame transformations.

Utilisation de matériaux composites magnétiques à nanoparticules pour la réalisation de composants passifs non réciproques micro-ondes / Use of composite materials with magnetic nanoparticles for the realization of passive non-reciprocal microwave componentsTchangoulian, Ardaches 24 October 2014 (has links)
In telecommunications systems, many studies have been undertaken to integrate non-reciprocal passive components. The proper functioning of circulators often requires large and heavy magnets that ensure a uniform orientation of the magnetic moments of the ferrite material. To work towards the integration and miniaturization of circulators, nanotechnology can offer interesting solutions. The aim of this thesis was to develop a self-biased coplanar circulator. The approach is based on the production of composite substrates "ferrimagnetic nanowire." It consists in a magnetophoresis or a dip-coating deposition of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles in porous alumina membranes and orienting them in a magnetic field uniformly. Magnetic composite substrates were made from CoFe2O4 nanoparticles dispersed in a matrix of silica sol-gel using the dip-coating technique with and without an applied magnetic field. Many studies have been made to study the magnetic and dielectric behavior of these substrates: VSM, spectral polarimetry, MFM and others. The hysteresis loops show a strong difference in the values of coercive fields (μ0Hc) and persistent (Mr / Ms) if, during the fabrication, a magnetic field is applied or not, therefore showing the orientation (or not) of nanoparticles. This nano-composite is an interesting candidate for the fabrication of circulators even if the concentration and the particle orientation are insufficient. Circulators were designed, modeled and simulated using the HFSS software. Following the interesting results of simulation; a first prototype was fabricated and characterized at high frequencies. The measurement results showed a circulation phenomenon, which is very low due to the small percentage of magnetic nanoparticles in the composite and their imperfect orientation. Technological barriers have been clearly identified and do not allow for the time to achieve an operational circulator

We present an extension of the static Limiting Loop Proximity ..2.. hysteresis model to incorporate reversible magnetization and rate-dependency to model power ferrite cores and, possibly, ferromagnetic materials based on iron and nickel for low-frequency applications. The proposed model is based on the combination of the ..2.. static model with a dynamical discrete linear filter of an infinite impulse response. Two cases where the hysteresis depends on the excitation frequency are presented using synthetic data to validate de capacity of the model to behave as real physical cores. The particle swarm optimization is employed as a method for parameter estimation in the resulting nonlinear static-dynamic model. Simulation results are presented indicating that we brought to the power electronic community apromising and alternative core model for magnetic components used in renewable power sources.

Analýza ztrát v elektrických strojích při nestandardních podmínkách / Losses Analysis in Electric Machines under Special ConditionsBulín, Tomáš January 2019 (has links)
This thesis deals with the analysis of magnetic losses in electrical machines and the possibilities of their measurement. Magnetically soft and hard materials are very prone to changing magnetic properties. They can be changed simply by changing the temperature of the material or different stresses induced in the material, resulting in different results. These changes are important to keep in mind when an electric machine is being designed. The original parameters of the affected materials can be restored by annealing or grinding. These methods release the induced stresses within the material. Due to these effects, it is also important to know how to measure magnetic parameters. Each way has its own specifics and has a certain error of the measurement. When the machines for higher efficiency, rpm or higher temperatures are designed, it is advisable to know how their magnetic properties changed. This thesis deals with the properties of different materials, their measurements and finally simulation of the chosen electric machine with the application of the measured results.
