Measures of Implicit Self-Esteem. Psychometric Properties and the Prediction of Anxious, Self-Confident and Defensive Behavior

Rudolph, Almut 08 July 2009 (has links)
The dissertation consists of an introduction and three empirical journal articles. The introduction gives the theoretical background about self-esteem and its assessment with indirect measures, and primarily, integrates the three journal articles. The first article investigates the reliability and convergent and discriminant validity of indirect measures of self-esteem. The second article complements the examination of the psychometric properties. It contributes evidence to the predictive validity of indirect self-esteem measures. With using non-self-reported criteria, a double dissociation between explicit and implicit self-esteem is tested. The third article brings into focus an applied aspect of personality psychology. It is analyzed how defensive reactions are related to self-esteem discrepancies, that are different combinations of explicit and implicit self-esteem.

This study is done as a quantity research with the directors and helpers of the organization, through questions, getting to know the opinion of all the inside workers of the Pharmacy School, achieving this way, through the answered obtained, the intensity of the active factors that stand in the way of a Total Quality Management in the developed activities. The parameters of the items in the questions made is calibrated by the research The Impact of Just-In-Time Implementation and ISO 9000 Certification on Total Quality Management by L. Paul Dreyfus, Sanjay L. Ahire, and Maling Ebrahimpour (2004). The method used applies concepts from the Item Answer Theory (IAT) to evaluate the maturity level of successful critic factors in the development of the activities in the Pharmacy School ITPAC: one related to the actions of implantation of a Total Quality Management System (TQMS) and another related to the Results obtained by the Pharmacy School Administrative Management ITPAC in relation to the quality of the products and services offered. The research also supplies lines of direction to help with eliminating the factors that interrupt Total Quality Management System in the Pharmacy School ITPAC according to the results achieved. These lines of direction allow the Pharmacy School to improve there processes and consequently, achieve higher levels of maturity to the implantation of a Total Quality Management System. It is important to emphasize that a Quality strategy planning, valuing the relationship with the clients, giving more strength to the capability of the processes and human functional links and the supplier, is a successful critic factor to any business. Os parâmetros dos itens do questionário aplicado é calibrado pela pesquisa The Impact of Just-In-Time Implementation and ISO 9000 Certification on Total Quality Management de L. Paul Dreyfus, Sanjay L. Ahire, and Maling Ebrahimpour (2004).

Multiple independent implicit personality processes: a challenge to dual process theory

Brooks, Charles Kennedy 16 September 2010 (has links)
This study applied the Process Dissociation Procedure (Bornstein, 2002) to test independence between personality processes represented by different implicit measurement techniques. In contrast to the commonly adopted literal view of dual processes in personality theory, the study predicted that two implicit measures (CRT-A and IAT-A) and one explicit measure (NEO-AH) of aggressive disposition would dissociate with each other in their 1) intercorrelations, 2) predictions of behavioral criteria of aggressiveness, and 3) potential moderation by situational cues. These hypotheses were generally, though not completely, supported. Most importantly, the two implicit measures dissociated in their lack of correlation and differential prediction of behavioral criteria, unaffected by changes in situational cues. As predicted, the CRT-A and the NEO-AH dissociated in their intercorrelations, predictions, and moderation by incentives. The IAT-A and the NEO-AH dissociated in their lack of intercorrelation and their differential moderation by changes in incentive conditions. As predicted, only the explicit measure was moderated by changes in incentive conditions. Unexpectedly, IAT-A and the NEO-AH were statistically indistinguishable in their prediction of behavioral criteria of aggression. The findings provided strong support for the hypotheses predicting multiple independent implicit personality processes.

Marital Satisfaction among Married Couples in which One or Both Members Play a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG)

Ahlstrom, A Michelle Elton 09 June 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the gaming behaviors of married individuals and couples who play Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game(s) (MMORPGs) including gaming addiction, time spent gaming, satisfaction in gaming participation, gaming interaction (between joint gaming spouses), and socio-demographic variables and the subsequent marital satisfaction levels of both individuals in the couple. Hypotheses were generally supported, excluding the hours spent gaming. 685 couples were separated and analyzed according to whether both individuals in the marriage gamed or just one individual gamed (couple-gaming type). Couples in which only one individual gamed (individual-gamer couples) had significantly lower marital satisfaction than all other groups and couples in which both gamed about the same amount of time (equal-gamers) held the highest marital satisfaction of the groups. Prediction models of marital satisfaction were determined for each couple-gaming type. The strongest predictions present in most of the models for marital satisfaction were the frequency that the couple retired to bed at the same time and the frequency that the couple quarreled specifically about gaming. Much MMORPG research has been presented on youth and adults, however to date there is no research on married gamers. Recent research on the video game habits of emerging adults called for further in depth investigation of the implications of video game use in the family formation stage of life.
