A Theoretical Mapping of Waterboarding Blogs 2007

Kliewer, Brandon W. 04 June 2008 (has links)
The goal of this research is to map processes of political idealization and how images are used and understood within the waterboarding blogs included in the case study. Chapter One is designed to provide basic information about the waterboarding issue and elements of this research more generally. The first chapter provides the following: information regarding the background facts of the waterboarding issue, research methods, research limitations, general descriptions of the blogs included in the case study, information about the general findings/data, and a brief explanation of why the blogs were chosen to be included in the case study. Chapter Two maps how elements of political idealization operate in the waterboarding blog case study. The first section of this chapter outlines Wendy Brown's theories connected to the process of political idealization. The second section maps the process of political idealization within the context of the waterboarding blog case study. The second section is broken into three additional sub-sections each representing a stage in the political idealization process. Chapter Three uses Aaron Barlow's outline of the emergence of the "Celebrity Journalist" as the premise to provide a partial explanation of why some political subjects are looking to virtual publics to supplement news media. The main purpose of Chapter Three is to map how images are used in the CODEPINK and Kaj Larsen video clip. / Master of Arts

Idealization, Intimate Partner Violence, and Relationship Satisfaction

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Research has demonstrated that intimate partner violence (IPV) plays an important role in relationship satisfaction. Consistently, the research has indicated a negative association between the prevalence of IPV and relationship satisfaction (Cano & Vivian, 2003; Hotaling & Sugarman, 1990; Vivian & Langhrinrichsen-Rohling, 1994); however, more recent research has provided evidence of higher relationship satisfaction when IPV is present (Frieze, 2005; Hamby & Gray-Little, 2000; Williams & Frieze, 2005). There has been less emphasis placed on uncovering possible explanations for this inconsistency. Some researchers have suggested that victims find ways to rationalize their offender's behavior (Ackerman & Field, 2011), do not consider themselves victims of violence (Hamby & Gray-Little, 2000), or even fail to identify physical violence as IPV (Ferraro & Johnson, 1983) in order to maintain their desire to feel satisfied in their relationship. There is a need for additional research to understand why an individual might report higher relationship satisfaction when IPV is present in her/his intimate relationship and attempt to uncover underlying, contributing factors of IPV. This study sought understanding of the potential mediating role that idealization, the overly positive illusions of a partner or the intimate relationship (Murray, Holmes, & Griffin, 1996a; 1996b), may play on the association between IPV and relationship satisfaction. Additionally, gender was examined as a potential moderator between the predictor and outcome variables as IPV research has consistently documented the need for greater gender symmetry within this topic. One hundred and fifty-two adults (75 males and 77 females) who were currently involved in an intimate relationship (e.g., dating, engaged, married) or had been within the past 12-months completed a survey that assessed IPV, idealization, and relationship satisfaction. Three types of IPV were measured for the purposes of this study (i.e., psychological aggression, physical assault, and sexual coercion), and each was analyzed separately. Results indicated that idealization served as a mediating variable in the relationship between IPV and relationship satisfaction for all three types of IPV. Gender was not found to moderate the relationships for any of the three types of IPV and relationship satisfaction. Limitations, implications, and future research are discussed. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Counseling Psychology 2018

A experiência da maternidade em mães adotivas

Sonego, Joice Cadore January 2007 (has links)
The present study investigated maternal feelings regarding adoptive motherhood. Nine adoptive mothers who adopted their children when they were infants took part in the study. The children were around two years old when data were collected. A semistructured interview was used, focusing on themes such as their children’s development and the motherhood experience. The data were analyzed through qualitative content analysis. The mothers demonstrated a strong idealization both regarding their children and their motherhood experience. Almost all mothers said they felt an immediate love for their children, when they first met them. Besides the idealization, maternal ambivalent feelings were also observed. At the same time the adoptive child was seen as not being different from a biological child, he/she was also portrayed by mothers “as if” he/she was their child, as well as “special”, “different”. The clinical implications of these findings are discussed.

Hypothetical, not Fictional Worlds

Weinert, Friedel January 2016 (has links)
yes / This paper critically analyzes the fiction-view of scientific modeling, which exploits presumed analogies between literary fiction and model building in science. The basic idea is that in both fiction and scientific modeling fictional worlds are created. The paper argues that the fiction-view comes closest to certain scientific thought experiments, especially those involving demons in science and to literary movements like naturalism. But the paper concludes that the dissimilarities prevail over the similarities. The fiction-view fails to do justice to the plurality of model types used in science; it fails to realize that a function like idealization only makes sense in science because models, unlike works of fiction, can be de-idealized; it fails to distinguish sufficiently between the make-believe (fictional) worlds created in fiction and the hypothetical (as-if) worlds envisaged in models. Representation characterized in the fiction-view as a license to draw inferences does not sufficiently distinguish between inferences in fiction from inferences in scientific modeling. To highlight the contrast the paper proposes to explicate representation in terms of satisfaction of constraints

Bakom bilden : En semiotisk bildanalys som analyserar hur Way Out West visuellt framställer kvinnliga och manliga artister i sin marknadsföring / Behind the image : A Semiotic Image Analysis That Analyzes How Way Out West Visually Portrays Female And Male Artists In Their Marketing

Damlin, Matilda, Franzén, Nelly, Frivold, Annie January 2020 (has links)
Men and women have been represented in different ways in media for a long time. Images and visual documents are important tools for companies in marketing so that they can convey their messages in the most desirable and presentable way possible (Ekström, Ottosson & Parment 2017). Events are considered to be an effective communication tool (Jutbring 2016)and more events have begun to work with social issues. One of Sweden's largest festivals, Way Out West works extensively with ecological sustainability, but lately they have started to focus more on equality as well (Luger 2020).The purpose of the study is to analyze how the Way Out West festival represents women and men in their figurative marketing of a selection of this year's lineup of artists. To answer the purpose, two research questions have been developed and the authors have analyzed the images with the help of scientific articles and a qualitative study. It is a semiotic image analysis that is based on representation theory, where stereotypes, idealization and face-ism are used as analysis tools. The study is supplemented by an interview, with PR and marketing manager for Way Out West, who provided background information to the study. The result of the study shows that there are both differences and similarities in how female and male artists are represented in Way Out West’s figurative marketing. All images are interpreted based on the prevailing cultural norms where stereotypes, idealization and faceism contribute to how the viewer interprets the message with the image. The representation of women and men are asymmetrical and Way Out West has a great responsibility in portraying the festival's artists as the social story of gender is constantly shifted and transformed (Johansson och Lalander 2013). Based on the semiotic image analysis, it can be concluded that Way Out West contributes to maintaining and changing stereotypes, idealization and face-ism when portraying their artists. The study is written in swedish. Men and women have been represented in different ways in media for a long time. Way Out West’s bildliga marknadsföring.

Ruprecht, Rubens. January 2004 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: At the dawn of psychoanalysis, Freud determines the notion of human nature as split, creating a new notion of psychic reality in which the truth discovery is related to the truth of unconscious desire and the religion would be a desirable illusion, the change of an idealized past into a convertible future, full of desire in constant metamorphosis. According to religion, this overestimate of ideal, beside the depreciation of reality, refers the person to a state of infantilism through the magic-infantile thought. Four students of Protestant Theology were analyzed in this study. The data were collected through interviews and some aspects related to both helplessness and religious idealization, which ones can be considered basilar integrants of their vocational/professional dynamics, in the context of a Protestant Theological Seminary were analyzed. The results showed that the religious feelings are supported by their ties with the idealized paternal figures that confirm the child fantasy of completeness through which the immediate suffering is decreased, but they make the person a child rather than seeking their overcoming as proposed by psychoanalysis. It is assumed that the overcoming of this human condition does not mean the person is protected against the total psychic suffering, but it results in person's capacity of supporting, being able of tolerating the fault, failure and helplessness without them representing a very hard threat to their psychic structure. Therefore, the constitution of religious feelings follows both given intra-psychic and external social determinism that... (Complete abstract, click electronic access below) / Mestre

[en] FROM SUBLIMATION TO IDEALIZATION: PSYCHIC CONSEQUENCES OF CHANGES IN THE WORK FIELD / [pt] DA SUBLIMAÇÃO À IDEALIZAÇÃO: IMPLICAÇÕES PSÍQUICAS DAS TRANSFORMAÇÕES NO MUNDO DO TRABALHO

CECILIA FREIRE MARTINS 26 March 2019 (has links)
[en] This dissertation has the objective of accomplishing a psychoanalytical investigation about the subjective consequences of changes in the field of work. In psychoanalysis there is an association between work and sublimation which is considered central to the production of culture and the psychic functioning. A review on the construction of the concept of sublimation in Freud s texts points at its distinctive features such as its asexual character, the production of culture and a form of psychic protection. However, the evaluation of the work field today calls into question the relationship between work and sublimation, especially when it comes to the protective function of sublimation. Considering that idealization can also be involved in the construction of culture, based on aiminhibited drives, we suggest that it plays a central role in the composition of the current work field, overriding the importance traditionally attributed to sublimation.
