An Exploration of Female Adult Adoptees' Experiences: Their Self-Concepts of Parenthood2015 May 1900 (has links)
Parenthood is generally marked as a joyous event, though some research indicates that the birth of a child can possibly involve a difficult and complicated adjustment period for
new parents (Ceballo, Lansford, Abbey, & Stewart, 2004). Questions regarding heritage and biological ties typically occur after developmental milestones, for example, births, marriages, and deaths, for adult adoptees. Horowitz (2011) offered that in order to understand the
uniqueness of adoptees’ experiences and the specific needs they may have during childhood, it is vital to study the entire adoptee trajectory into adulthood, in order for adoptive parents and society to prepare successfully and launch adoptees into adulthood. This study explored how
adult adoptees view parenthood through the lens of their own upbringing in Canada. There are gaps of information in the literature on how adoptees undertake parenting and how they approach becoming parents. In addition, how adoptees recognize themselves in their own children whether their children are adopted or not and how adoptees bond with their children. This study is an effort to address this gap offering recommendations for future research.
Using an attachment theory framework while employing a mixed methods approach through an exploratory-sequential design, highlighted results include: adult adoptees struggle with identity issues and their adoption experiences do impacted the way they become parents and how they view themselves as parents.

Previous issue date: 2009-08-27 / This research aims at analyzing the discursive practices used by workers who,
sometimes, use ciphered language in their professional activities while keeping
characteristics of the construction of homosexual identities and of their work in a hair
salon located in Rio Grande, RS. It is based on studies of work (Schwartz and
Durrive, 2007; Nouroudine, 2002), on cultural studies (Hall, 2006; Bauman, 2001,
2005), and on the dialogical theory of discourse (Bakhtin, 1997, 1998, 2003;
Bakhtin/Volochinov, 2006). The specific objectives of this study are the following: (i)
to verify the interaction among heterosexuals and homosexuals in discursive
practices at work; (ii) to analyze how discursive practices happen in male
homosexuals' work; (iii) to understand discursive aspects of the identity constitution
of male homosexuals in work situations. I observed and recorded interactions that
occurred among three hairdressers in a hair salon, and interviewed them,
afterwards. Based on the analysis which I carried out, I noticed that the ciphered
language is a clue for the hairdressers' homosexual identity constitution; at times,
they try not to be understood by other individuals who are around them. I also
observed that the hairdressers' work activity is rather dynamic and comprises
language as work, at work, and about work. Therefore, it enables different subjects,
even the most intimate ones, to circulate in the work environment / Partindo de pressupostos que articulam estudos sobre o trabalho (Schwartz e
Durrive, 2007; Nouroudine, 2002), estudos culturais (Hall, 2006; Bauman, 2001,
2005) e a teoria dialógica do discurso (Bakhtin, 1997, 1998, 2003;
Como objetivos específicos, visa a (i)

» : a better understanding of Maghrebean immigrant’s shopping experience through the concept of identityHadj Hmida, Manel 05 December 2015 (has links)
It happens that the consumer has to deal with life issues related to identity matters. He is engaged in a process of identity construction. This research shows that the store supports the consumer in his identity project. It acts as a resource allowing him to deal with all the idenity conflicts, like body issues, distortions with the self, self esteem issues and ethnic identity issues. According to a psychological approach, this research shows that the store becomes aresource for (re)constructing the self and provides the consumer with therapeutic benefits. Through what he lives in the store, the consumer will be confronting its weaknesses and become aware of his self. The way the store helps the consumer with these conflictual identity issues makes him experiencing his self.In this research, we use a phenomenological approach that helps to highlight the consumer engagement in the process of his identity experience. Then, it offers a better understanding of the shopping experience concept.

At the intersection of several disciplines – anthropology, sociology, art history, and feminist and gender studies, this thesis deals with the works, practices, careers and discourses of New Zealand Maori women artists active in the field of contemporary art and living in an urban environment. Due to their many forms of belonging, these artists are behind specific political demands and identity affirmations: their work contains simultaneous references to the individual histories, their status as members of an indigenous minority and a tribe, and their condition as women and citizens of the New Zealand nation. The analysis of the data obtained after a fieldwork investigation in New Zealand carried out over a year from 2012 to 2013, of complementary research on the Internet and exchanges with artists when back from the field makes it possible to show how these artists are part of today's Maori assertion movement. For since British colonization in the 19th century, the Maori have continued to assert their rights. In this context, some women use art as a powerful means of protest and of promoting social change aimed at the recognition of mana wahine (women's power or prestige). This work also reveals that their artistic practice affords them the opportunity to reassert the ties linking them to the Maori world while at the same time enabling them to attain a certain empowerment and emancipation. They develop original strategies for asserting their creativity without transgressing the rules which remain important for the Maori people.

Identity Issues in Asian-American Children's and Adolescent Literature (1999-2007)Liu, Yi-chen 12 1900 (has links)
Published research suggests that literature should transmit ethnic and societal values as well as reassure one's own confidence and self-respect. This study provides a model for examining Asian-American children's and adolescent literature critically from the perspective of identity issues. It examines fifteen award-winning Asian-American children's and adolescent titles written by writers of that culture and published in the United States from 1999 to 2007, with a focus on Chinese (Taiwanese) American, Korean American, and Japanese American books. As published studies indicate, self, social, and ethnic identities are significantly intertwined. Hence, a content analysis was conducted based on these three major groups of categories. The findings of the study demonstrate that even though the selected books cover all three aspects of the identity issues to a certain degree, a considerably greater number of depictions of ethnic identities are made over those of internal identities and social identities. Moreover, less than half of the main characters assume an active role in improving the difficult situation. Two major voids regarding the presentation of social identities are successful social integration and positive social interactions. Recommendations for teaching, writing, illustrating, publishing, and future research are suggested, including publishing more Asian-American books which present an optimistic outlook on life, active conflict-resolving behaviors, and a balance of gender among individuals with whom the main character interacts.

Towards a European Paradigm of Social Work / Studies in the history of modes of social work and social policy in Europe / Wege zu einem europäischen Paradigma der Sozialen ArbeitLorenz, Walter 09 October 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This dissertation analyses the relationship between social work and social policy in Europe from a comparative historical perspective. Central to this analysis is the dynamic interplay of forces which led to the consolidation of the European nation state as a welfare state, including the current crisis of the welfare consensus. The role of social work emerges as central to the project of national cultural integration, a perspective which frequently gets overlooked from a purely national perspective. Social works enmeshment with this nation state project is revealed in the current transformation of the welfare states in the light of neo-liberal principles and in the context of globalization. This perspective underlines the need for the development of intercultural communicative competences and in particular a consistent anti-racist approach in social work. At the same time the particular position in relation to social policy requires the development of research methods specific to the discipline in the light of its hermeneutic tasks.
