The World in 3D : Geospatial Segmentation and Reconstruction

Robín Karlsson, David January 2022 (has links)
Deep learning has proven a powerful tool for image analysis during the past two decades. With the rise of high resolution overhead imagery, an opportunity for automatic geospatial 3D-recreation has presented itself. This master thesis researches the possibil- ity of 3D-recreation through deep learning based image analysis of overhead imagery. The goal is a model capable of making predictions for three different tasks: heightmaps, bound- ary proximity heatmaps and semantic segmentations. A new neural network is designed with the novel feature of supplying the predictions from one task to another with the goal of improving performance. A number of strategies to ensure the model generalizes to un- seen data are employed. The model is trained using satellite and aerial imagery from a variety of cities on the planet. The model is meticulously evaluated by using four common performance metrics. For datasets with no ground truth data, the results were assessed visually. This thesis concludes that it is possible to create a deep learning network capa- ble of making predictions for the three tasks with varying success, performing best for heightmaps and worst for semantic segmentation. It was observed that supplying estima- tions from one task to another can both improve and decrease performance. Analysis into what features in an image is important for the three tasks was clear in some images, unclear in others. Lastly, validation proved that a number of random transformations during the training process helped the model generalize to unseen data. /
Examensarbetet är utfört vid Institutionen för teknik och naturvetenskap (ITN) vid Tekniska fakulteten, Linköpings universitet

The Effect of Weight and Size on Mental Rotation

Furtak, Luke 01 January 2014 (has links)
Shepard and Metzler (1971) argued that mental rotation is analogous to the real world in that people imagine the rotation of an object as if it were being physically rotated. This study tested this assertion by exposing participants to physical shapes that increased in size and weight. Participants interacted with blocks designed after Shepard and Metzler mental rotation size that differed in size and weight then performed subsequent mental rotation. We found no difference in reaction time but found that increased size reduced accuracy. We discuss the implications of this study as they pertain to embodied cognition.

Visual Mental Imagery is Not Evidently Separable from Episodic Memory Recall

Pénzes, Dániel January 2024 (has links)
While previous research on episodic memory vividness aims at measuring episodic memory, such cognitive tasks also involve visual mental imagery since vividness is primarily a property of visual mental imagery. Literature also shows that subjective measurements of visual mental imagery (e.g., the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire; VVIQ) are confounded by demand characteristic effects, either by participant response biases or instructional cues. Investigating such claims is most suitable in those who report an absence of visual mental imagery, that is, in aphantasia. Therefore, this study examines whether subjective vividness ratings are interpreted differently between a “visualize” and a “recollect” version of the VVIQ. One hundred and thirty-nine participants filled out online either one of the versions of the questionnaire, which also included an additional manipulation on demand characteristics (i.e., instructional cues on what alleged previous research found on response patterns). Eighty-nine participants self-described with aphantasia. Results showed that irrespective of self-describing with aphantasia or not, participants scored comparably on the two versions of the questionnaire (with aphantasic participants scoring overall lower than control participants), favouring the interpretation that episodic memory vividness involves visual mental imagery. Furthermore, no demand characteristic effects were found in those self-describing with aphantasia, whereas controls’ questionnaire scores were affected only negatively by the employed instructional cues. Different interpretations of such results are discussed, highlighting the idea that it is a difficult methodological exercise to discern the two theoretical constructs: visual mental imagery and episodic memory.

A study of psychological intervention strategies used by national soccer coaches for male teams in South Africa

Xoxo, Thabo Daniel January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of the current study was to examine the Psychological Intervention Strategies (PIS) that are used by coaches for male soccer teams in South Africa to enhance the performance of the national soccer teams. National soccer coaches for male teams (n = 4) completed a questionnaire and attended in-depth interview. Results from both the questionnaire and in-depth interview revealed a lack of knowledge of PIS which was further supported by the data from the analysis. While some of the coaches did not utilise goal setting and relaxation in their coaching responsibilities, the current results further show that these soccer coaches do not utilise mental imagery as well. These results suggest that the SAFA soccer coaches could not integrate PIS in the coaching. Although the results cannot be generalised there is evidence that the SAFA trained soccer coaches demonstrate inadequacy in using PIS in their soccer coaching. The study finds that soccer coaches are psychologically under-prepared for their arduous task of soccer coaching. By implication the players are also mentally under-prepared that they cannot face their peers competitively. Current studies point to this psychological preparedness as the psychological momentum.

Cognitive bias modification : the effect of mental imagery on reaction rate to emotionally valenced stimuli

Kunstler, Erika C. S. 08 1900 (has links)
A normative experimental study was undertaken to establish whether engaging in positive, negative, and neutral mental imagery affected the reaction rate of participants to positive, negative, and neutral word stimuli. The sample consisted of computer literate, English speaking participants with no history of clinical disorders. A total of 80 participants took part in the study, with 40 participants from either gender. The results of a factorial ANOVA indicated that the type of mental imagery engaged in had a significant effect on the rate at which participants responded to stimuli (p=.00023, F=8.4057), whilst the emotional valence of the stimuli did not have a significant effect (p=.30503, F=1.1877). However, the interaction between the type of mental imagery and the emotional valence of the stimuli was highly significant (p=.00794, F=3.4576), thereby indicating that engaging in positive or negative mental imagery did bias participants towards a faster reaction rate to positive or negative stimuli respectively. / M.A. (Psychology) / Psychology

Imagery rehearsal therapy : Kognitiv beteendeterapi vid posttraumatiska mardrömmar hos veteraner

Fjellström, Camilla January 2016 (has links)
Mental suffering costs the society amounts of money every year due to sick leave, suicide and general production loss. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the conditions that can affect anyone who has experienced a traumatic event. This thesis examines the positive experiences and limitations of the treatment form Imagery rehearsal therapy for war veterans’ post-traumatic nightmares. The results show that this treatment reduces post-trauma nightmares both in frequency and in intensity. It also improves the quality of sleep and reduces PTSD- and depression symptoms. However, veterans with multiple traumas as a basis for their PTSD may need more sessions of imagery rehearsal therapy. The results also indicate that the treatment also can show positive results in the reduction of the nightmare frequency and intensity in individuals who suffer from other types of traumatic nightmares than the war veterans had.
