Student-teacher Interaction Through Online Reflective Journals in a High School Science Classroom: What Have We Learned?Ehlers, Megan Elizabeth 01 January 2015 (has links)
Three challenges in current secondary school science classrooms are (a) meaningful integration of technology, (b) integration of reading and writing in content courses, and (c) differentiation of instruction to meet individual student needs in courses. This is an exploratory study of an urban, high school marine science course in which a teacher added communication with her students via asynchronous online journals. This intervention was intended to enable the teacher to understand how students were constructing knowledge and their understanding of marine science topics. Data included journal postings from all students and the teacher throughout the semester, as well as the teacher's personal journal.

Cette thèse s’intéresse à définir de nouvelles méthodes cliniques d’investigation permettant de juger de l’impact de l’avance en âge sur la motricité. En particulier, cette thèse se focalise sur deux principales perturbations possibles lors de l’avance en âge : la chute et l’altération de la marche.Ces deux perturbations motrices restent encore mal connues et leur analyse en clinique pose de véritables défis technologiques et scientifiques. Dans cette thèse, nous proposons des méthodes originales de détection qui peuvent être utilisées dans la vie courante ou en clinique, avec un minimum de contraintes techniques.Dans une première partie, nous abordons le problème de la détection de la chute à domicile, qui a été largement traité dans les années précédentes. En particulier, nous proposons une approche permettant d’exploiter le volume du sujet, reconstruit à partir de plusieurs caméras calibrées. Ces méthodes sont généralement très sensibles aux occultationsqui interviennent inévitablement dans le domicile et nous proposons donc une approche originale beaucoup plus robuste à ces occultations. L’efficacité et le fonctionnement en temps réel ont été validés sur plus d’une vingtaine de vidéos de chutes et de leurres, avec des résultats approchant les 100% de sensibilité et de spécificité en utilisant 4 caméras ou plus.Dans une deuxième partie, nous allons un peu plus loin dans l’exploitation des volumes reconstruits d’une personne, lors d’une tâche motrice particulière : la marche sur tapis roulant, dans un cadre de diagnostic clinique. Dans cette partie, nous analysons plus particulièrement la qualité de la marche. Pour cela nous développons le concept d’utilisation de caméras de profondeur pour la quantification de l’asymétrie spatiale au cours du mouvement des membres inférieurs pendant la marche. Après avoir détecté chaque pas dans le temps, cette méthode réalise une comparaison de surfaces de chaque jambe avec sa correspondante symétrique du pas opposé. La validation effectuée sur une cohorte de 20 sujets montre la viabilité de la démarche / This thesis is concerned with defining new clinical investigation method to assess the impact of ageing on motricity. In particular, this thesis focuses on two main possible disturbance during ageing : the fall and walk impairment. This two motricity disturbances still remain unclear and their clinical analysis presents real scientist and technological challenges. In this thesis, we propose novel measuring methods usable in everyday life or in the walking clinic, with a minimum of technical constraints.In the first part, we address the problem of fall detection at home, which was widely discussed in previous years. In particular, we propose an approach to exploit the subject’s volume, reconstructed from multiple calibrated cameras. These methods are generally very sensitive to occlusions that inevitably occur in the home and we therefore propose an original approach much more robust to these occultations. The efficiency and realtime operation has been validated on more than two dozen videos of falls and lures, with results approaching 100 % sensitivity and specificity with at least four or more cameras.In the second part, we go a little further in the exploitation of reconstructed volumes of a person at a particular motor task : the treadmill, in a clinical diagnostic. In this section we analyze more specifically the quality of walking. For this we develop the concept of using depth camera for the quantification of the spatial and temporal asymmetry of lower limb movement during walking. After detecting each step in time, this method makes a comparison of surfaces of each leg with its corresponding symmetric leg in the opposite step. The validation performed on a cohort of 20 subjects showed the viability of the approach.

Micro-hardness and depth of cure of dental bulk-fill compositesAbughufa, Hajer January 2015 (has links)
Magister Scientiae Dentium - MSc(Dent) / Resin composite is one of the most commonly used materials in restorative dentistry. However, it has undergone continuous developments like changes in the fillers and initiators. One such improvement is the new bulk-fill composites which are materials intended for bulk placement up to 4mm. However, an optimum polymerization to the full depth of the restoration i.e. complete depth of cure is of utmost importance in order to obtain proper mechanical and physical properties of resin composites. Aim: The aim of this study was to measure the surface hardness of the top and bottom surfaces of the composites and to determine the depth of cure of bulk-fill composites using two different types of light curing units. Material and methods: A total of 160 specimens were used in this study: four bulk-fill composite were used of which two were conventional viscosity bulk-fill composites namely, Tetric N Ceram (Ivoclar Vivadent) and SureFil bulk-fill composite (Densply Caulk) and two were low viscosity flowable bulk-fill composites namely, SDR flowable (Densply Caulk) and Filtek bulk-fill flowable restorative (3M ESPE). Two different curing light were used namely, LED (Elipar Freelight, 3M ESPE) at 1500mW/cm2 and a Quartz Tungsten Halogen (QTH) curing unit (Megalux CS, Megadenta, Germany) at 600 mW/cm2. To evaluate micro-hardness, Vickers hardness at top and bottom of each sample was measured immediately after light curing and after 24 hours post curing using a Zwick micro-hardness machine load 300g/15 seconds. The mean hardness values obtained from the top and the bottom surface of each material were used to compare the micro-hardness of the various materials. The mean values obtained from the bottom surface were compared to the respective values of the top surface of each material (bottom/top ratio) and used to calculate the depth of cure. Results: The micro-hardness test showed a significant difference between the four materials (ANOVA, p<0.05) immediately after curing and after 24 hours post curing. The material with the greatest micro-hardness was SureFil followed by Tetric N Ceram, Filtek bulk-fill flowable and SDR flowable respectively. The material with the greatest depth of cure was Filtek bulk-fill flowable followed by SDR flowable, Tetric N Ceram and SureFil. When the curing lights were compared the Light Emitting Diode Curing Unit (LED) obtained significantly better depth of cure compared to Quartz Tungsten Halogen Light Curing Units. The LED curing light showed greater micro-hardness values than the QTH curing light except for Tetric N Ceram where the QTH curing showed more hardness values than the LED curing light. For all materials, the surface hardness and depth of cure values increased when tested 24hrs after light curing. Conclusion: There was a difference in the micro-hardness values between the four materials where the conventional viscosity materials showed greater surface hardness values than the low viscosity materials but the depth of cure compared to the bulk-fill flowable LED curing lights showed higher hardness values than QTH curing light except for Tetric N Ceram. Depth of cure ratios were found to be lower than 0.80 for all composite types, however the flowable bulk-fill materials showed higher depth of cure than the conventional viscosity bulk-fills. In general LED curing light produced better hardness and depth of cure values than QTH curing light. The low micro-hardness values for the bulk-fill flowable composites and the inadequate polymerization raises a concern regarding placing these materials in bulk. In such cases, the flowable bulk-fills should be protected with a conventional composite "covering or capping" especially in posterior teeth and in deeper cavities. Furthermore, bulk-fill composites should be used in layering incremental technique to ensure sufficient depth of cure.

Knowing the concentrations of the nutrient elements in soils is important due to their toxic effect on humans and the environment. The aims of this study were to assess the effects of water quality, depths and distances of lateral installation on soil chemical properties during turfgrass cultivation. A field experiment was conducted using a Split Split Plot design based on the Randomized complete Block (RCB) with two treatments (well’s and wastewater), and eight sub-treatments (45 and 60 cm distance of the laterals and 15, 20, 25, and 30 cm depths of laterals) in three replicates on a sandy-loam soil, in Shahrekord, Iran. Soil samples were collected from 0-30 and 30-60 cm depth for measuring nitrate (NO3-), electrical conductivity (EC), and pH at the end of the experiment. During the experiment, fecal coliform (FC) were also measured at the soil surface. Results indicated that by increasing lateral distance, NO3- level increased in both layers. With installing laterals in deeper levels, NO3- concentration decreased at the beginning, then increased in the first layer, whereas in the second layer NO3- concentration decreased. In addition, installing laterals in deeper depth, caused an increase in soil EC in the top layer, but a decrease in the lower layer. However, the results showed that there was no significant effect of experimental factors on soil pH. The results also show that with increasing laterals depth, Fc level decreased at the soil surface.

Airborne Laser Quantification of Florida Shoreline and Beach Volume Change Caused by HurricanesRobertson, William 08 March 2007 (has links)
This dissertation combines three separate studies that measure coastal change using airborne laser data. The initial study develops a method for measuring subaerial and subaqueous volume change incrementally alongshore, and compares those measurements to shoreline change in order to quantify their relationship in Palm Beach County, Florida. A poor correlation (R2 = 0.39) was found between shoreline and volume change before the hurricane season in the northern section of Palm Beach County because of beach nourishment and inlet dynamics. However, a relatively high R2 value of 0.78 in the southern section of Palm Beach County was found due to little disturbance from tidal inlets and coastal engineering projects. The shoreline and volume change caused by the 2004 hurricane season was poorly correlated with R2 values of 0.02 and 0.42 for the north and south sections, respectively. The second study uses airborne laser data to investigate if there is a significant relationship between shoreline migration before and after Hurricane Ivan near Panama City, Florida. In addition, the relationship between shoreline change and subaerial volume was quantified and a new method for quantifying subaqueous sediment change was developed. No significant spatial relationship was found between shoreline migration before and after the hurricane. Utilization of a single coefficient to represent all relationships between shoreline and subaerial volume change was found to be problematic due to the spatial variability in the linear relationship. Differences in bathymetric data show only a small portion of sediment was transported beyond the active zone and most sediment remained within the active zone despite the occurrence of a hurricane. The third study uses airborne laser bathymetry to measure the offshore limit of change, and compares that location with calculated depth of closures and subaqueous geomorphology. There appears to be strong geologic control of the depth of closure in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. North of Hillsboro Inlet, hydrodynamics control the geomorphology which in turn indicates the location of the depth of closure.

Comparison of Nitrogen Retention in Wetlands With Different DepthsThomas, Jes January 2017 (has links)
The depth of constructed wetlands (CWs) significantly affects the construction investment that influences the efficiency of the CW and is an important design consideration for optimal performance. The aim of the study was to examine the influence of depth on nitrogen retention in 12 pilot scale free surface water CWs in Plönninge (56◦43 45 N, 12◦43 33 E): 6 shallow wetlands with a maximum depth of 0.5 m and 6 deeper wetlands with a maximum depth of 0.8 m. The outlet N concentration in shallow and deep wetlands were found to be significantly different (p<0.05, p= 0.017). Outlet N concentration over the months June to December in deep and shallow wetlands, was found to be significantly different (F (6,60 = 20.594, p< 0.05). and the N concentration in deep and shallow wetlands was significantly different (F (1,10) = 8.087, p<0.05). The N concentration in September was found to be significantly different from those in all other months. The first order rate constant k was calculated for shallow and deep wetlands; higher k value indicates higher nitrogen retention. The deeper wetlands had higher k values than shallow wetlands and was statistically different (p<0.05, p= 0.002) from the k values for shallow wetlands. This implies that the N retention was higher in deeper wetlands than in shallow and was the highest in September. This was most likely due to the effect of temperature and vegetation in the wetlands.

Digital watermarking of multimedia content has been proposed as a method for different
applications such as copyright protection, content authentication, transaction
tracking and data hiding.
In this thesis, we propose a lossless watermarking approach based on Discrete Cosine
Transform (DCT) for a new application of watermarking. A depth map obtained from
a stereoscopic image pair is embedded into one of the two images using a reversible
watermarking algorithm. Different from existing approaches which hide depth map
in spatial domain, the depth information is hidden in the quantized DCT domain of
the stereo image in our method. This modification makes the watermarking algorithm
compatible with JPEG and MPEG-2 compression.
After the investigation of the quantized DCT coefficients distribution of the compressed
image and video, The bit-shift operation is utilized to embed the depth map into its associated 2D image reversibly for the purpose of achieving high compression efficiency of the watermarked image and/or video and high visual quality of stereo image and/or video after the depth map is extracted.
We implement the proposed method to analyze its performance. The experimental results show that a very high payload of watermark (e.g. depth map) can be embedded into the JPEG compressed image and MPEG-2 video. The compression efficiency is only slightly reduced after the watermark embedding and the quality of the original image or video can be restored completely at the decoder side.

Due to the fast development in 3D technology during recent decades, many approaches in 3D representation technologies have been proposed worldwide. In order to get an accurate information to render a 3D representation, more data need to be recorded compared to normal video sequence. In this case, how to find an efficient way to transmit the 3D representation data becomes an important part in the whole 3D representation technology. Recent years, many coding schemes based on the principle of encoding the depth have been proposed. Compared to the traditional multiview coding schemes, those new proposed schemes can achieve higher compression efficiency. Due to the development of depth capturing technology, the accuracy and quality of the reconstructed depth image also get improved. In this thesis we propose an efficient depth data compression scheme for 3D images. Our proposed depth data compression scheme is platelet based coding using Lagrangian optimization, quadtree decomposition and quadratic curve fitting. We study and improve the original platelet based coding scheme and achieve a compression improvement of 1-2 dB compared to the original platelet based scheme. The experimental results illustrate the improvement provided by our scheme. The quality of the reconstructed results of our proposed curve fitting based platelet coding scheme are better than that of the original scheme.

Three Essays on Market Depth in Futures MarketsAidov, Alexandre 02 August 2013 (has links)
Liquidity is an important market characteristic for participants in every financial market. One of the three components of liquidity is market depth. Prior literature lacks a comprehensive analysis of depth in U.S. futures markets due to past limitations on the availability of data. However, recent innovations in data collection and dissemination provide new opportunities to investigate the depth dimension of liquidity.
In this dissertation, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) Group proprietary database on depth is employed to study the dynamics of depth in the U.S. futures markets. This database allows for the analysis of depth along the entire limit order book rather than just at the first level.
The first essay examines the characteristics of depth within the context of the five-deep limit order book. Results show that a large amount of depth is present in the book beyond the best level. Furthermore, the findings show that the characteristics of five-deep depth between day and night trading vary and that depth is unequal across levels within the limit order book. The second essay examines the link between the five-deep market depth and the bid-ask spread. The results suggest an inverse relation between the spread and the depth after adjusting for control factors. The third essay explores transitory volatility in relation to depth in the limit order book. Evidence supports the relation between an increase in volatility and a subsequent decrease in market depth. Overall, the results of this dissertation are consistent with limit order traders actively managing depth along the limit order book in electronic U.S. futures markets.
