Mellanförskapets identitet : En postkolonial analys av Navid Modiris författarskap / The identity of inbetweenship : An post-colonial analysis of Navid Modiris authorship

The purpose of this essay is to examine how Navid Moodiris concept of "mellanförskap", translated by the author himself as "inbetweenship", the postcolonial we and them as well as different identity constructions are expressed in social debator Navid Modiris authorship. The notion of identity is used from a social psychological perspective and the notion of inbetweenship is based on Modiris own description of the term. The theoretical starting point for the study is the post-colonial theory with focus on Said's construction of "the Other" and Spivak and Halls thoughts on how colonialism influenced and influence today's society. The questions at issue are examined by analysis of three poems from the poem vollection Skrik om du brinner (eng. Cry if you are on fire) and two lyrics. Analysis results are presented through quotes from the texts, which are discussed and commented on the basis of how inbetweenship, we and them as well as different identities are expressed in the texts. Overall, it is mainly through themes such as family relationships, distance, generalizations and lack of limits that the investigated objects are highlighted. The clear conclusion is that it's because of the normative society that we and them, and the feeling of inbetweenship can be produced and that the criticism of this society is the underlying theme of the Modiris entire authorship. / Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka hur mellanförskap, det postkoloniala vi och dem samt olika identitetskonstruktioner kommer till uttryck i samhällsdebattören Navid Modiris författarskap. Begreppet identitet används utifrån ett socialpsykologiskt perspektiv och mellanförskap utifrån Modiris egen beskrivning av termen. Den teoretiska utgångspunkten för studien är den postkoloniala teorin med fokus på Saids konstruktion av "de Andra" samt Spivak och Halls tankar om hur kolonialismen påverkat och påverkar dagens samhälle. Studiens frågeställningar undersöks genom analys av tre dikter från diktsamlingen Skrik om du brinner samt två låttexter. Analysresultatet presenteras genom citat från texterna, vilka diskuteras och kommenteras utifrån hur mellanförskap, vi och dem samt olika identiteter kommer till uttryck i texterna. Sammantaget är det främst genom teman som släktskap, avstånd, generaliseringar och avsaknaden av gränser som de undersökta objekten lyfts fram. Den tydliga slutsatsen är att det är på grund av det normativa samhället som vi och dem samt känslan av ett mellanförskap kan skapas samt att det är kritiken mot detta samhället som är det underliggande temat för hela Modiris författarskap.

Betweenship, or inbetweenness, is a complex state of mind. Numerous stories about it arecurrently being shared and more are piling up by the minute. Inbetweenness exist in all socialclasses all over the world.What is inbetweenness? Inbetweenness is a state of mind closely connected with theexperiences of children of immigrants, mixed races and transracial adoptees. What createdinbetweenness? Many scholars, like for example Tobias Hübinette, believe thatinbetweenness is a result of globalization. What inbetweeners all have in common is that theyidentify themselves as people of subculture, or people between cultures, because theyrepeatedly travel between different cultures and identities. In our research we found that thecommon aspiration and desire among inbetweeners is that their identities must not beexamined or questioned by other people, especially those who do not understandinbetweenness, and also that inbetweenness is the result of different power structures in thesociety.Patrik Bolling Ferell, co-founder of the Swedish foundation The Inbetweenship(Mellanförskapet), has said that “It’s on the airplane between my two home countries I feelhome at most.” These inbetween individuals already struggle with identity issues. Most ofthem don’t even know what (or where) to call “home”. What is interesting about the noun“home” is that it has multiple meanings, such as a shelter that is a person’s residence, and aplace where domestic affections are centered. The meaning is controversial, which is why thequote by Ferell is so fitting.Descendants of foreigners and inbetweeners all over the world claim that they arecurrently not treated with equality nor the respect that they deserve, which is the main reasonwhy we decided to write this bachelor essay about this subject.This essay focuses on collecting and analyzing research data from a number of individualsfrom different chosen cities who also answered a few questions in an inquiry about theinbetweenness situation in Sweden. To analyze this research data we decided to use thecritical discourse analysis theory by Norman Fairclough to study the bond between powerstructures and inbetweenness in Swedish society. We also question why the Swedish schoolsystem, its principals and teachers insist on not incorporating this subject when there clearlyis enough room for it in the curriculum and syllabus, according to our study. At the end of ourstudy, we give advice on how teachers can educate Swedish upper secondary school students about inbetweenness as a part of religious studies.Inbetweenness research indicated that there are great flaws in religious studies in Sweden.Results showed that there are no, or very few educational lessons about inbetweenness,multicultural, alienation and reconciliation education.This study, researched and written with brand new data about the subject, concludes thatthe majority of our survey participants have never even heard the word inbetweenness or anyof its variants, while the majority have experienced or continue to experience it. Results fromthe survey also show us that the participants also feel that the Swedish school system musttake its responsibility to its students and educate them better about this subject, as manyparticipants would have felt better and safer with their identities knowing that they are notalone in the world, and that what they are feeling is completely normal. Participants in thesurvey also answered that they would probably have gotten better grades if teachers andschoolmates understood what they have been going through.

"Jag Är Jugge, Ingen Snack Om Saken" : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om hur första och andragenerationens invandrare från f.d Jugoslavien upplever sin nationella identitet / I am from Yugoslavia, no question about it : A qualitative study on how first- and second-generation immigrants from former Yugoslavia experience their national identity

The main purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of how first and second generation immigrants from former Yugoslavia experience and precive their national identity. Furthermore to understand differences and similarities between first-generation and second-generation immigrants based on inbetweenship. Previous research has shown that people with one or more cultural backgrunds tend to develop more fluid identity in comparson to people who only have one cultural backgrund. Furthermore, previous research has also shown that people with immigrant background or a multi-ethnic background tend to end up in betweenship, to greater extent. To achieve the study`s purpose and answer the research questions I have chosen to conduct a qualitative interview study based on semi-structured interviews with first and second generation immigrants from former Yugoslavia living in Sweden. The theories used in the study to analyze the result were inbetweenship and national identity as a grounded conceptual definition.  The results showed that first-generation immigrants from former Yugoslavia did not perceive themselves as Swedes, but in all cases referred to their ethnic origin when speaking about their national identity and identity perception. The results also showed that second-generation immigrants partly experienced their identity in similar way. However, second-generation immigrants tended to experience their identity as Swedish and not in relation to their ethnic origin in half of the cases.
