The application and development of inclusive service design in the context of a bus service

Aceves-Gonzalez, Carlos January 2014 (has links)
This thesis investigates the design of inclusive services by integrating theory and approaches from the domains of Service Design and Inclusive Design. This integration was used to evaluate bus service use by younger and older people and the role of other stakeholders. The research was carried out through the case study of the bus service in Guadalajara, Mexico. As a result of this research, an inclusive service design approach and a tool are proposed to guide the design of inclusive services. Using an inclusive service design approach led to the application of a mixed methodology for data collection, which included: 1) a series of individual and group interviews with stakeholders as well as a document analysis; 2) structured focus groups with younger and older people; 3) observation of younger and older passengers using the service; and 4) accompanied journeys with older people. Data were analysed using both qualitative and quantitative techniques, and the results facilitated 1) the understanding of the service operation; 2) the identification of the main barriers for interaction with the service along a door-to-door journey; and 3) the determination of the gap between what younger and older users need and desire and what bus operators actually provide. The research then focussed on visualising and communicating the findings to stakeholders. An inclusive service blueprint was developed to graphically represent the level of difficulty in using the service by younger and older people across the door-to-door journey, and to highlight areas for service improvements. A final study was undertaken to assess the usefulness of the inclusive service approach and the blueprint in improving the bus service. Collectively, the findings indicate that integrating inclusive principles along with a Service Design approach provided several benefits in investigating and improving the bus service. The uniqueness of data generated by younger and older users and the understanding of inclusive principles by the stakeholders already shows the potential to lead to a more inclusive service given the activities now happening in Guadalajara. This research contributes to the discussion of how the design of services can evolve through the incorporation of inclusive principles in the design process. Whilst the research was undertaken in the context of the bus service in Guadalajara, the approach and some outcomes from this research may be applicable for designing inclusive services in other contexts around the world.

Med ergonomi i fokus : En studie om ergonomi i designprocessen vid framtagning av nya produkter på IKEA of Sweden / Focus on ergonomics : A study of ergonomics in the design process when developing new products at IKEA of Sweden

Stenberg Gleisner, AnnaKlara January 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines the presence of ergonomics in the design process at IKEA of Sweden. It also attempts to describe how IKEA of Sweden can implement more ergonomics in their development process of new products. The study is based on interviews with employees at IKEA of Sweden and with an employee at the design bureau Veryday.  The thesis also includes a design process that has been conducted using a given brief by IKEA of Sweden with a predetermined way of production. The purpose of the design process should have an overall ergonomic perspective. The interviews were analysed using the theory presented which includes the perception and fallacies of ergonomics, anthropometrics and universal design. The result shows that ergonomic aspects are not included in a structured way common for all areas when developing products at IKEA of Sweden. The study also points to a need of information about ergonomics, like a guideline. Access to an expert as an occupational therapist or a physiotherapist would also improve the design process. The analysis of the design process and the products Höghult shows the importance of preparation in the design process using functional analysis, specifications and analysis of the way of production. To proceed with the implementation of the overall ergonomic perspective in the design process, it is important to test and evaluate the prototype using an expert and a test panel representing the potential customers.

A better world by design? : an investigation into industrial design consultants undertaking responsible design within their commercial remits

Stevenson, Norman January 2013 (has links)
Growing recognition of the profound topics affecting society; including population changes, social issues, and environmental crisis; is emphasising the need for industrial designers to address additional goals beyond those associated with purely commercial targets. Industrial design consultants, however, have a myriad of complex and inter-related elements influencing their work. This thesis investigates those influences and offers a portrayal of what affects industrial design consultants addressing more responsible design goals within their commercial remits. It reviews the literature relating to the nature and role of industrial design, and its relationship with society s larger needs. From this, it expounds the methodology underpinning the investigation, and describes the phases involved. Two main studies were undertaken to pursue the research objectives: an explorative workshop involving 19 participants from design practice and academia; and a series of semi-structured in-depth interviews involving a total of 31 industrial design consultants, leading academics, and design-related strategic consultants. From the analysis of the data, three sets of key observations and theory are presented in the thesis. The first set of findings examines the range of influencing factors acting on the consultant and their work by depicting the characteristics of the main elements constructing the product creation context. The second and principal set of findings identifies what determines the possibility for consultants to incorporate responsible design goals within their work. Using a framework derived from the analysis, and drawing on interview data for empirical backing, it expands on six key areas, identifying a critical determining factor for each. The third set of outcomes combines the findings from the primary data with existing knowledge on design actions and behavioural theory, to depict the formation of an industrial design consultant s behaviour and their tendencies towards responsible design. In this way, the research offers a thorough investigation of what affects industrial design consultants addressing more responsible design goals, by considering the characteristics of their circumstances; the determination of their possibility to act; and what shapes their individual behaviour.

Leon Ayala, Sandra Caterine 09 1900 (has links)
Technological progress and the growing aging population are two major trends of the last decade. The ubiquitous proliferation of mobile communication devices during this period has significantly altered people’s communication habits. The constantly changing mobile phones, their increasing features, the numerous icon designs, the variety of user interfaces and its complex navigation require nowadays not only more time for adaptation and learning but also a significant cognitive effort. Information technology and communication (ICT) have become essential tools of modern life. For seniors, this constantly mutating universe with its new digital devices makes information accessible to many thus contributing to a generational divide. The lack of reference and support and the physical or cognitive impairment that some people often develop while aging makes the use of such products very difficult. Both, a physically and cognitively accessible system becomes a real necessity in our modern society since it could help seniors live more autonomously and« connected ». This research aims to identify the challenges related to mobile phone use and reveal specific problems that older people encounter. The study focuses on the population that is little familiar with these devices especially since communication technologies seem aimed at the younger generations and professionnels. Through qualitative research seniors’ usage pattern will be studied allowing us not only to establish different user profiles with respect to ICT but also to better understand the challenges related to the perception, comprehension and manipulation of mobile phone user interfaces.

Psychosocial inclusivity in design : a definition and dimensions

Lim, Yonghun January 2018 (has links)
Significant changes in demographics, including a growing ageing population and a larger number of people with disabilities, have made inclusive design an increasingly relevant notion in the design of products, services, and environments. However, there is considerable concern that the concept of inclusive design is rather limited in its current definition and applications and has not yet been thoroughly applied. This is possibly due to the conventional understanding and application of inclusive design, mainly rooted in and focused on physical aspects of inclusion, such as accessibility, usefulness, and usability. This limited focus has led various voices in design academia and industry to speak of the need for further consideration of the psychological and social aspects of inclusive design as the next step to facilitate inclusive design, and make impact. In this research, inclusivity on psychological and social levels, is referred to as "psychosocial inclusivity". The concept of psychosocial inclusivity, including a clear definition thereof and its application, is rather limited in the existing literature. Therefore, this PhD research aims to further explore this concept by establishing a clear definition and the dimensions thereof. In order to achieve this, an initial definition and dimensions of the psychosocial inclusivity in design are established through a critical review of existing literature from both social science and design perspectives. The initial definition and dimensions are then developed, refined, and evaluated through four empirical studies: the Delphi study (expert survey); field study I (ethnographic interviews with mobility scheme users); field study II (ethnographic interviews, creative workshop, and observation of older individuals); and an evaluation study (online survey of design academics and professionals). These studies have been designed based on a triangulation approach in order to enhance the reliability and validity of the outcomes. At the end of this research, the definition and dimensions for psychosocial inclusivity in design (Cognitive, Emotional, Social, and Value dimensions) are proposed. The outcomes of this research can enhance the understanding and knowledge of the concept of psychosocial inclusivity in design. Also, the definition and dimensions can be used by design academics and professionals or third parties to consider psychosocial aspects. The dimensions also can be developed as a complete set of framework or toolkit through further research.

Evaluating Two Shopping Centers In The Light Of Principles Of Universal Design

Sevuk, Muhammet Sancar 01 April 2011 (has links) (PDF)
EVALUATING TWO SHOPPING CENTERS IN THE LIGHT OF PRINCIPLES OF UNIVERSAL DESIGN Sev&uuml / k, Muhammet Sancar M. of Arch., Department of Architecture Supervisor of the thesis: Prof. Dr. Vacit Imamoglu April 2011, 156 Pages Starting from the second half of the 20th century, the number of aged people and people with aging-related disabilities has increased significantly in the world. Parallel to this increase, special projects have been developed for aged people in the developed countries, but with these projects aged people were often excluded from society. People with disabilities were already living isolated from society. With the effect of raising awareness in the public after the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, in the course of the last sixty years studies have been realized and new standards and principles have been developed for elderly people and people with disabilities to benefit from the social life equally together with everyone and to raise their quality of life. Starting with the barrier-free design approach, a new period improving and changing the view point of design from general and private design to design for all, to inclusive and/or the universal design has begun. In the thesis, this period has been reviewed through the summarized definitions of these stages. The effects of these improvements have been related to the design and construction of the built environments and buildings. Therefore, people with disabilities started to participate in the society more than ever. The implementation of principles of the Universal Design in the public buildings, especially to hospitals, cultural centers and shopping centers has gained more importance in order to advance full social integration of people with disabilities to the society. Number of shopping centers in Turkey increased rapidly after 1995. In this thesis, two examples were examined and evaluated in the light of universal design principles. The problems faced in these buildings were examined in order to design more inclusive buildings and environments. A brief history of shopping centers was presented. Brief information about some examples of old bazaars from Anatolia and shopping centers from different countries were given.

Design inclusivo centrado no usuário : diretrizes para ações de inclusão de pessoas cegas em museus / Inclusive design user-centered: Guidelines for actions to include blind people in museums / Diseño inclusivo centrado en el usuário: Directrices para acciones de inclusión de personas ciegas en museos

Bolaños Mora, Adriana January 2012 (has links)
The main subject of this research work has been developed in the field of the Inclusive Design (ID), which seeks to contribute to the non-discrimination and social inclusion of everyone through the development of products and services that could be adequately used by people of different capabilities (FALCATO; BISPO, 2006). This paper's main motivation is how to satisfy the needs of a person suffering from functional diversity from the ID perspective (PALACIOS; ROMAÑACH, 2007). The objective being to project the museum as an inclusive space through external assistance and the person's personal experience by means of a phenomenological methodology. This research work is based on the fact that people ought to be placed on the spotlight, ought to behold the world through their eyes and feel with their feelings (PRESS; COOPER, 2009). A referential framework of the possibilities of producing inclusion and integration via sensorial stimuli of the blind people in the museum environment was created from some inclusive experiences (carried out in four Latin-American museums and exhibitions). This framework allows us to analyze the way how sensorial stimuli may complement the blind person's visit to the museum, especially the tactile and auditory stimuli. For this reason, a prototype serving as the base of this research execution was created. A réplica, twice as big as the original, of a precolombine piece was made by the use of a tridimensional scanner using materials that could produce a life-like tactile reaction (90% copper and 10% gold). The replica includes an audio description, previously recorded and digitalized. Data collection was made from February through March 2012 following the principles of the phenomenological interview proposed by Thompson et al . (1989). In order to carry out the collection semi-structured interviews were made in which the interviewees were able to express freely. The data collected was descriptively and analytically analyzed by means of dialogue with the selected authors. Four people with visual deficiency with ages ranging from 25 to 45 years participated in the research. The subjects were contacted via e-mail through the group INCLUIR from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. The analyses allowed us to conclude that procedures like this one offer the blind people the possibility of enjoying as other visitors would do, as well as some independence when visiting a museum. Finally, it may contribute to the Inclusive Design in addition to other fields such as Museology.

The thesis consists in the conception of a modular electric motor vehicle that can be attached in any model of standard wheelchair. It is an electro-mechanical equipment, available as an accessory, with a simplified physical structure and high applied electronic technology capable of giving the wheelchair greater freedom of movement without physical wear and tear. The union between inclusive design and the medical field can be an important step in obtaining products aimed at the real needs of people with particular physical and psychological conditions, improving their well-being and ability to do their daily activities. In this way, the thesis is guided by the fundamentals of inclusive design with the main focal point in the user, by the way presents two other important pillars adopted in its development methodology, being the benchmarkig and the study of Technical Standards applied in the development of Assistive devices. The stages of development are presented, tests based on Technical Standards and usability testing. The aim of this work is to demonstrate the whole process of equipment design, as well as the theoretical study of stability and assembly of the functional prototype. The tests based on the Technical Standard ABNT NBR ISO 7176 allow the understanding of the dynamic and functional behavior of the prototype in terms of static stability, brake efficiency, power consumption, maximum speed, acceleration, deceleration and obstacle transposition capacity. Finally, we discuss the analysis of the results of the tests together with the calculated theoretical results and established prerequisites.
