"The Fellowship Of The Ride" : Individual and collective identity building within a road-bike community

Sourri, Thomais January 2021 (has links)
In an era that sees sports clubs facing a crisis, a few still grow and attract new members. They use technology for their benefit and provide a place where the members have fun, become aware of their competence, set goals for improvement and experience empowerment. The present qualitative study, conducted with a road cycling club in Germany, investigates how membership is negotiated and confirmed. By exploring the factors that influence the degree of belonging, this research aims to provide some answers on how active members of a cycling hobby club experience becoming part of such a community, what it takes to substantiate membership, and how individual and collective identities are formed and constantly negotiated. The situated learning perspective and Etienne Wenger's Communities of Practice concept have been adopted, and semi-structured interviews with ten participants were conducted. Moreover, observations and conclusions from a stimulated focus group discussion were used. The analysis shows that cycling in a group is a complex, multifaceted learning experience. Power, speed, or cycling skills do not suffice without the will and active efforts to harmonise with a group. Belonging grows parallel to competence, and the degree of competence gets constantly evaluated by the community in their practice, as a combination of contribution to the common goal and ability to be a trusted partner. Competence is thus a “becoming”, reflecting the members’ engagement with the sport and on an interpersonal level.

Negotiating individual and collective narratives in a contested urban space : an investigation of storytelling dynamics in contemporary Bradford

Rohse, Melanie C. C. January 2014 (has links)
This thesis explores the dynamics of narrative production and contestation within individuals’ stories and the collective stories of the communities in which they live. The research is focused on trying to understand the relationship between public stories constructed about place and community, and the stories told by the inhabitants of those places. A case study in the city of Bradford provides a focus for inquiry. A qualitative research design is utilised, combining theory with primary data collection and analysis. A narrative analysis of national, academic and local stories about Bradford is used to disaggregate collective narratives of the city and explore the relationship between popular, political and academic discourses. It provides a context for the analysis of in-depth interviews with a range of inhabitants from a selected geographic area within Bradford, centred on how their individual stories relate to the identified collective stories of Bradford. Analysis of the fieldwork data shows that individuals are often engaged in complex negotiations of public discourse in ways that may reinforce and contest existing stories, but also complement them with parallel stories that neither reinforce nor contest but construct a different narrative. It reveals and reflects on apparent contradictions within everyday storytelling, for example, how nostalgia can be displayed about harsh times of socio-economic decline, or how attitudes to change over time can be variably positive and negative depending both on the speakers’ positioning of themselves and of the interviewer, and the speakers’ purpose in the interaction.

A Conception of Human Dignity : A study about human dignity as a guiding moral principle in the implementation and conflict of human rights

Lewis, Matthew January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to develop a fruitful conception of human dignity, a conception that can be used as a guiding moral principle when trying to resolve the conflict of rights. Specifically, the question that this study attempts to answer is what is a fruitful conception of human dignity and how can it be used to deal with concrete issues pertaining to human rights? Two reports from special rapporteurs propose two different courses of action regarding the implementation of the right to protection of property, and this is the conflict that the proposed conception of human dignity tries to resolve. To develop a conception of human dignity a broad conception of human dignity is initially developed, through the usage of a Rawlsian reflective equilibrium, and it is further developed through a combination of a reflective equilibrium, examination of the conception in relation to overall coherence with the human rights tradition, and a consequence analysis. The latter is done by utilizing a consequence analysis with the aforementioned courses of action being applied in a specific case, the case of Tanzania. By using a consequence analysis, a proposed conception of human dignity and a reflective equilibrium the conception of human dignity could be developed further and contribute to resolve the specific conflict of rights that could be found in the reports of the special rapporteurs. The conclusion drawn was that both of the proposed courses of action, regarding the implementation of the right to the protection of property and in relation to the proposed conception of human dignity, had desirable and less desirable consequences. Therefore, a third way was proposed that sought to bridge the gap between both courses of action, by combining elements of both, and to strengthen the condition-dignity for the parties affected.

Ecole catholique primaire en quête de navigation professionnelle : entre le pilotage des compétences et le renforcement stratégique de la qualité rénover le système de gestion et de mesure des performances / Primary catholic school in search of professional navigation : between the piloting of competences and the strategic reinforcement of quality renovate system of management and mesureament of performances

Youssef, Marlène 01 January 2010 (has links)
This thesis makes it possible to pay the attention to some fundamental characteristics of the Catholic school and up to what point to seek its professional navigation would allow drawing the guarantee from its capacity to renovate the system of management and measurement of the performances, between its piloting of competences and its strategic reinforcement of quality. In the history of the Catholic school, several researchers had the importance of the challenges which defy it and which invite it to find answers adapted not only to the level of the contents of the didactic methods (choice of the pedagogy adapted the needs of the pupils) but also to the level of administrative work. In research, we thus took into account these realities which encourage the Catholic school on the one hand to make an adaptation of its structures and its mode to act, to continue to be an effective presence and incisor in the educational sector while living its vocation, and on the other hand, to measure its total performance and to control its decisions in a professional way. ln this direction, we innovated "MAR_BEL S.M.D" (system of management and measurement of the total performance of a Catholic school) to propose structures for the modeling of a learning school, qualifying and in search of professionalisation on the one hand, and on the other hand to improve its strategic decisions. lndeed, this system of modeling and decisions made it possible through an investigation to check the bonds between theoretical concepts and the professional realities lived in a complex context into the Lebanese territory .

GONÇALVES, Sílvia Ferreira Caproni 07 August 2014 (has links)
This research aims to understand the moviment constitution from the Field of Public by the theoretical framework of identity provided by social psychology. In a context of strengthening of public administration and increasing the supply of enrollments in these courses, the moviment Field of Public stands out as a collective expression of which is linked to the recognition of the peculiarities of the formation of public managers. This is an exploratory qualitative study. From the study of the legislation that guides the formation of these Professionals and of the fundamental references of administrative science, the assumed identity of the administrator is drawn. The empirical part of the research is developed from interviews with members of the moviment Field of Public bachelors in business administration and analyzed using the Content Analysis tecnique. Based on these interviews, the research shows that significant distinctions between the identities of professional administrators (from companies) and public administrators were a determining factor for the formation of the movement and positioning of denial of this identity was crucial for the respondents entrance in the moviment. The Field of Public was also associated with the idea of emergent paradigm presented by Keinert (2000). According to the survey results, the movement can be taken as na evidence from the consolidation of the Emerging Paradigm pointed by Keinert (2000). It was found that the nature of collective identity construction is an identity of resistance to the imposition of typical benchmarks of hegemonic administrative science. Although the moviment points toward the construction of a project identity, anchored in the multiplicity of the formation of its actors and in the possibility of building multidisciplinary referrals, which can guide the public managers formation or even the creation of an identity for the Brazilian public administration.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Francisco Ronald Capoulade Nogueira.pdf: 739486 bytes, checksum: a94c39cca51acd5d59aab56b20beda3d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-02-21 / The present dissertation discusses an investigation in the area of the Social Psychology of Work. Specifically, the author studied how five different psychoanalysts of Lacanian orientation listen to and deal with patients who bring with them some type of complaint related to the world of work. First, a theoretical investigation was carried out to determine into what field this dissertation should be classified, concentrating especially on a discussion related to the ontological aspects of work, its psychic consequences in the context of capitalism, possible contributions from the field of mental health as related to work, and theoretical elements from psychoanalysis. In the second phase of the research, five psychoanalysts were interviewed individually, their statements being classified as narratives. The content was established through semi-structured interviews that called for the narration of experiences in treating patients affected by some type of mental suffering related to work. In dealing with their patients the respondents tended to give greater weight to aspects related to family dynamics and histories than to aspects related to the world of work. This fact brings once again to the fore the old debate over the differences between individuals and collectivity in society.
