Soldiers into Nazis? : the German infantry's war in northwest Russia, 1941-1944

Rutherford, Jeffrey Cameron, 1974- 01 February 2011 (has links)
This work seeks both to modify and challenge the prevailing view of an ideologically-driven Army intent on realizing Hitler's racist goals in the Soviet Union. One way of measuring the ideological commitment of the Army's soldiers is through an examination of the divisional level. Each of the three divisions under examination was recruited from a geographically and culturally distinct area, allowing the soldiers of the 121st, 123rd and 126th Infantry Divisions to recreate the sense of community unique to their home region: East Prussia, Berlin and Rhineland-Westphalia, respectively. The differences between social classes, traditional political allegiances and confessions found in these regions was thus transferred to these divisions and these distinctions allow for a more precise investigation of what types of men were more or less likely to subscribe to the German war of annihilation in the Soviet Union. Unlike much of the literature which examines the ideological nature of the war and the military conflict separately, this study looks at combat and occupation in tandem. Through the use of official military records, ranging from the Army down to the regimental level, as well as previously unused diaries and letters written by the men of these three divisions, a complex and varied picture of the German Army's activities and motivations arises. Firstly, while ideological concerns certainly played a role in determining the actions of these divisions, other more tangible problems, such as food and clothing shortages and numerical weakness, were more important issues in determining the Army's frequent savage interactions with civilians. Second, instead of the war serving to increasingly radicalize the behavior of the troops, the German Army began to significantly modify its conduct in hopes of winning the cooperation of Soviet civilians in late 1942 and 1943 before reverting to Scorched Earth policy in 1944. Internal mechanisms within the Army led to these changes in behavior: when a conciliatory policy was viewed as necessary to win the war, it was implemented; when the Army believed unadulterated violence was the means to victory, radical policies were carried out its forces. / text

Obyčejní vojáci aneb 1. pěší pluk "Mistra Jana Husi" v roce 1938. / Ordinary soldiers - first infantry regiment "Master Jan Hus" in 1938.

KOZEL, Petr January 2011 (has links)
The thesis entitled "Ordinary soldiers and The First Infantry Regiment "Master Jan Hus" in 1938" will deal primarily with the task of Infantry Regiment 1 "MJH" and its three infantry battalions (I/1, II/1, III/1) in the planned defense of the region of České Budějovice in 1938. The situation will be described mainly with regards to the occupation and the planned defense of the South Bohemian 1. Main Defence Position (fortification parts 197, 181, 182 and part of 183). The main contribution lies in the description of the everyday life of soldiers of the regiment and in a historical anthropological excursion, which tries to seek the concept of symbolic communication and rituals. The thesis will also seek to shed light on the events that occured after the signing of Munich agreement, in Southern Bohemia, several major incidents - not just with the terrorist units of ?Sudetendeutsches Freikorps?, but also with regular units of Wehrmacht. Some findings are published for the first time including the poll results "Army of 1938", submitted by representatives of the Infantry Regiment 1 "MJH" and the 5th Infantry Division.

Mekskytte i fredens tjänst : Svenskt mekskyttekompani i multidimensionell fredsbevarande operation

Stigenäs, Karl-Gustav January 2012 (has links)

Gauging Training Effectiveness of Virtual Environment Simulation Based Applications for an Infantry Soldier Training Task

Maxwell, Douglas 01 January 2015 (has links)
The U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command*s Army Learning Concept 2015 and Army Training Concept 2025 are documents that discuss the need for an adaptive soldier learning model with a flexible training delivery methodology. The U.S. Army has been investing in serious gaming technology for the past two decades as a cost effective means to teach tactics and strategy. Today, the U.S. Army is seeking to expand its application of virtual environment training to areas such as cultural awareness and human network analysis for the infantry soldier. These new expanded applications will require a higher level of non-determinant behavior inside the virtual environment. To meet more of the training needs of the war fighter, the U.S. Army is looking beyond first person perspective games to the cooperative and social gaming experience offered by the MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Game) and the VWT (Virtual World Technology). Altogether, these classes of games have the potential to teach leadership skills, social acclimation skills, cultural awareness and practice skills, and critical thinking skills for problem solving in a cost effective manner. Unfortunately, even today there is a paucity of scientific research to support whether this potential may be realized or not. A literature review was performed which covers current concepts in the usage of virtual environments for military individual and team training in the U.S. Army infantry soldier domains. There are many variables involved with the lifecycle of the virtual training activity including the acquisition, information assurance and cyber security, deployment, proper employment, content development and maintenance, and retirement. This discussion goes beyond the traditional topics of graphics and game engine technology and delves deeper into concepts of the importance of proper usage of the environments by the trainees. This dissertation is composed of three studies with two subject pools: experienced soldiers and novice soldiers. The participants in the studies were randomly assigned to one of two training conditions. The training conditions were either a traditional slide-show in a classroom or a virtual environment based training system. The participants were then provided with training for a room clearing tasks in each of the conditions. The independent variables are training condition and soldier condition. The dependent variables are individual performance, team performance, stress questionnaire scores, and workload questionnaire scores. A number of relationships are explored in this dissertation. The first objective of these studies is to attempt to identify any effect the training conditions have on either individual performance or team performance. Lastly, these studies attempt to identify if there is any difference the training conditions have on novice versus experienced subjects* performance during a live assessment.

"Getting Rid of the Line:" Toward an American Infantry Way of Battle, 1918-1945

Catagnus Jr., Earl James January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation explores the development of America’s infantry forces between 1918-1945. While doing so, it challenges and complicates the traditional narrative that highlights the fierceness of the rivalry between the U.S. Army and Marine Corps. During the First World War, both commissioned and enlisted Marines attended U.S. Army schools and served within Army combat formations, which brought the two closer together than ever before. Both services became bonded by a common warfighting paradigm, or way of battle, that centered upon the infantry as the dominant combat arm. All other arms and services were subordinated to the needs and requirements of the infantry. Intelligent initiative, fire and maneuver by the smallest units, penetrating hostile defenses while bypassing strong points, and aggressive, not reckless, leadership were all salient characteristics of that shared infantry way of battle. After World War I, Army and Marine officers constructed similar intellectual proposals concerning the ways to fight the next war. Although there were differences in organizational culture, the two were more alike in their respective values systems than historians have realized. There was mutual admiration, and targeted attempts to replicate each other’s combat thinking and spirit. They prepared for battle by observing each other’s doctrine, and sharing each other’s conception of modern combat. When preparation turned to execution in World War II, they created solutions for battlefield problems that evolved from their near-identical way of battle. At the conclusion of the war, the common bonds between the Army and Marine Corps were all but forgotten. This, ultimately, led to increased friction during the Congressional defense unification battles in 1946. / History

"The Best Stuff Which the State Affords": a Portrait of the Fourteenth Texas Infantry in the Civil War

Parker, Scott Dennis 12 1900 (has links)
This study examines the social and economic characteristics of the men who joined the Confederate Fourteenth Texas Infantry Regiment during the Civil War and provides a narrative history of the regiment's wartime service. The men of the Fourteenth Infantry enlisted in 1862 and helped to turn back the Federal Red River Campaign in April 1864. In creating a portrait of these men, the author used traditional historical sources (letters, diaries, medical records, secondary narratives) as well as statistical data from the 1860 United States census, military service records, and state tax rolls. The thesis places the heretofore unknown story of the Fourteenth Texas Infantry within the overall body of Civil War historiography.

Infanteriet - pånyttfött eller återanvänt? : En jämförelse av infanterireglemente under kalla kriget och idag / Infantry - born again or recycled? : A comparison of the regulations for the infantry during the Cold War and modern day

Bengtsson, Ola January 2013 (has links)
This essay aims at studying how swedish infantry regulations have changed from the invasion-deterring army of the Cold War to today’s modern expeditional army, but also to show likenesses between these. The essay is based upon two regulations, Infanterireglemente Skyttebataljon 1974 and Markstridsreglemente 6: Manöverbataljon Förhandsutgåva 4 2012, which are compared with an analytical tool constructed from elaborated and operationalized parts of the six basic abilities. The thesis shows that there is a difference concerning the use of indirect method in order to defeat the opponent, and also in the terms of mission tactics. Similarities can be found in the description delaying the opponent and the use of indirect fire.
