An Examination of Juvenile Delinquency and Victimization Using an Integrated Model Approach.Dodson, Kimberly Dawn 01 May 2001 (has links) (PDF)
The theories of social bond, differential association and routine activities were synthesized into one theoretical model to determine its predictive utility in the explanation of juvenile delinquency and victimization. Using cross-sectional data obtained from the Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) survey, a sample of 1,555 middle school students was examined. The results of the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regressions indicate that the integrated model explains between 33% and 37% of the variation in delinquent behavior (i.e., property crime, violent crime and alcohol and illegal drug use). The analysis also indicates that the integrated model explains between 15% and 27% of the variation in victimization. This thesis concludes that theoretical integration is necessary in order to develop a more complete crime theory and to increase the current understanding of the crime-victimization relationship.

Becoming Vegetarian: An Analysis of the Vegetarian Career Using an Integrated Model of DevianceBoyle, Joseph Edward 11 May 2007 (has links)
This dissertation attempts to explore the nature of a particular food consumption pattern using a number of different deviance theories in order to outline the career path of vegetarianism. Using semi-structured interviews with 45 practicing vegetarians from two regions of the United States, the career path of the vegetarians was developed around David Matza's (1969) theory of becoming deviant. Within each stage of Matza's classic work, more specific theories were applied to explain the friction between vegetarianism and the more socially-accepted practice of meat eating within the United States. The framework of the stages includes the affinity for, affiliation with, and signification of vegetarian ideology and practice. Each stage within the theory is also a stage in the development of the vegetarian identity. The more specific theories utilized to explain phenomena within each particular stage attempt to show a progression from initially being interested in the ideals and practice of vegetarianism to becoming and verbalizing as a mature, practicing vegetarian. Finally, the vegetarians interviewed were asked to give the prognosis for the future of vegetarianism. / Ph. D.

Justiça e direitos humanos: análise da jurisprudência no STF(1988-2012) / Justice and human rights: analysis of the jurisprudence in STF (1988-2012).Brandão, Juliana Ribeiro 27 March 2015 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the jurisprudential production on human rights in the Federal Supreme Court (STF), defending the argument that, in the Brazilian context, when interpreting the current legislation, the Court acts towards the construction of these rights. Reconstructing the scenario of human rights extracted from the UN Charter (1945) and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), the study criticizes the consensus on human rights proposing an extended reading that relates to the debates about justice. Making use of bibliographical and documentary research, the objectives of the work are: (i) assessing what is the framing that human rights receive in the Federal Supreme Court during the period between 1988 and 2012, investigating how the category \"human rights\" has been built in the judicial treatment of this court and (ii) determining on what grounds such framing is based on. The theoretical framework of \"Integrated Theory of Justice\" by Nancy Fraser is used to discuss the contemporary conception of human rights as well as the institutional scheme of STF. The analysis of the collected trials is based on a quantitative treatment and the deepening of the material is made by means of a typology of cases that guides the qualitative approach. The conclusion of the work emphasizes the existence of notions of Human Rights that are not consistent with the environment of acceptance of the situation upon which these rights would be established.

State-Corporate Crime in the Democratic Republic of CongoWinters, Veronica Jane 01 January 2013 (has links)
This study addresses the need for a parsimonious theoretical model to explain state-corporate crime. The Integrated Theoretical Model of State-Corporate Crime will be compared to the Integrated Theory of International Criminal Law Violation to determine which model provides the most accurate theoretical depiction of state- corporate crime, while retaining parsimony. For this comparison, the models will be applied to Democratic Republic of Congo case study. Using a secondary analysis of qualitative data and preexisting literature, it was found that the Integrated Theoretical Model of State-Corporate Crime displays a representative depiction of all state-corporate crime actors and their catalysts for action in a more parsimonious manner than the Integrated Theory of International Criminal Law Violation.

Från öppna hjärtan till stängda gränser : En fallstudie om drivkrafterna bakom Moderaternas förändrade migrationspolitikAsp, August January 2020 (has links)
The past decade has been a relatively tumultuous time in Swedish parliamentary politics with minority governments, a new party challenging the status quo and ultimately the breaking of the second largest coalition in Swedish politics. The decade also saw some policy changes in parties, most strikingly the Moderate party which once an outspoken proponent of a lax immigration policy, saw a clear shift to a more restrictive policy after the 2015 refugee crisis. The first aim of this study is to explain what the shift in immigration policy looks like in terms of whether it was a positional change or a change in ideological emphasis too. By using the method of comparing manifestos the conclusion was reached that the Moderate party shifted both their positional policy and their ideological emphasis. The question of what drives political parties to change policy is a hotly debated one with a wide array of theories and perspectives contributing to the discussion. In addition this study also attempts to apply the theory first proposed by Harmel and Janda (1994) “An Integrated Theory of Party Goals and Party change” on the Moderate party to explain the driving force behind the shift in immigration policy. This was done by comparing Moderate party manifestos from the year 2006 to 2018 in three issues (immigration, private actors in the education sector and private actors in the healthcare sector) that saw the public opinion clearly shift away from the party. Mostly through the process of elimination the study concludes that the Moderate party likely shifted their position on immigration issues in order to have better chances of forming more advantageous coalitions in order to change their opposition status in the future.
