Santos, Daiane Barrili dos January 2017 (has links)
This research had the main objective to propose an integration landscape between research data repositories and scientific publications based on the model for enhanced publications. From its nature`s point of view, it is basic. According to the approach it is considered a qualitative, is characterized as an exploratory, bibliographic research and a case study as well. The analysis model of this study was constituted of three phases. In first phase of the analyses, specific literatures were colected through the systematic review and from literatures, in addition the suggested requirements and indicated for a model for enhanced publications were extracted, in addition the suggested requirements and indicated for an enhanced publication model were extract. In second phase of the analyses, research data repositories were select through the re3data.org directory and were verified the information provided through the filters which demonstrated the application of links based on the model for enhanced publications. In the third and last phase of the analyses, an inspection of interfaces were realized, and also elements that each repository comprehend were identified to subsequently initiate the analyses, observations and comparisions of the elements used on repositories with the estabilished requirements through systematic review. It was perceived in the literature, that there are an attempt to add a structure by using related requirements to metadata, semantic relationship, among others. Also verified that part of this estructure indicated on literature is available on interfaces of some identified repositories on re3data.org. Although these repositories which comprehend part of the indicated structure were characterized as a minority.( Continue) Therefore, there has been a growing need for an infrastructure compatible with the enhanced publications, aware of the importance for the application of requirements to the interfaces of research data repositories. The crossover of informations realized in this study allowed a greater understanding about the importance to use each one of the stipulated requirements, as well as was possible to understand the consequences in case of these requirements are not be included in the repositories interfaces. Research data repositories should provide on their interfaces the links and access to their respective scientific publications of the recorded data in order to be able to understand the studies carried out from this data. It has been proven that this process does not occur in most repositories, which difficults to understand the origin and context in which these data were used. It was noticed that repositories not in agreement with the main presented established requirements characteristics of conventional publications, as for example PDF documents, HTML texts and which was not in accordance to patterns for semantic web. This proposal for a research data integration model based on enhanced publications aims to suggest an interface that that fulfills all the specified requirements in this research to obtain an infrastructure compatible to enhanced publications. From the investigation and deepening the theme, it was possible to increase the knowledge and to detect the appropriate elements to propose an integration model between a researches data repository and scientific publications based on a model for enhanced publication as well as highlighting the advantages of applying this model. Thus, it is concluded that a set of available data into a digital repository that comprehend the requirements improves the information recovery and, therefore, increases the visibility of publication and authors.

Infinite horizon predictive control of integrating processes with delay time.

Carrapiço, Oswaldo Luiz 19 November 2004 (has links)
In the control literature, the available predictive controllers show limitations to be applied in processes that have integrating behavior. One of these limitations is related to the stabilizing properties of the resulting control law when the system is in closed loop. The main objective of this work is to develop a nominal stable control algorithm based on infinite prediction of system outputs. For this purpose an existing state space representation is explored and extended in order to be able to be applied to stable and integrating process with dead time. Two distinct methods to assure stability of integrating systems were developed for the infinite horizon MPC. For the case of state feedback, nominal stability of the resulting MPC was proved for the two methods and the efficiency of the controllers was verified through examples of the control literature. One of the controllers was also applied to an industrial distillation process of a petroleum refinery. The developed algorithm was extended to the output feedback operation with the inclusion of a Kalman filter for estimation of the model states. The application of the controller to a system with different dead times between integrating variables was also studied.

Optical Characterization and Energy Simulation of Glazing for High-Performance Windows / Optisk karakterisering och energisimulering av smarta fönster

Jonsson, Andreas January 2009 (has links)
This thesis focuses on one important component of the energy system - the window. Windows are installed in buildings mainly to create visual contact with the surroundings and to let in daylight, and should also be heat and sound insulating. This thesis covers four important aspects of windows: antireflection and switchable coatings, energy simulations and optical measurements. Energy simulations have been used to compare different windows and also to estimate the performance of smart or switchable windows, whose transmittance can be regulated. The results from this thesis show the potential of the emerging technology of smart windows, not only from a daylight and an energy perspective, but also for comfort and well-being. The importance of a well functioning control system for such windows, is pointed out. To fulfill all requirements of modern windows, they often have two or more panes. Each glass surface leads to reflection of light and therefore less daylight is transmitted. It is therefore of interest to find ways to increase the transmittance. In this thesis antireflection coatings, similar to those found on eye-glasses and LCD screens, have been investigated. For large area applications such as windows, it is necessary to use techniques which can easily be adapted to large scale manufacturing at low cost. Such a technique is dip-coating in a sol-gel of porous silica. Antireflection coatings have been deposited on glass and plastic materials to study both visual and energy performance and it has been shown that antireflection coatings increase the transmittance of windows without negatively affecting the thermal insulation and the energy efficiency. Optical measurements are important for quantifying product properties for comparisons and evaluations. It is important that new measurement routines are simple and applicable to standard commercial instruments. Different systematic error sources for optical measurements of patterned light diffusing samples using spectrophotometers with integrating spheres have been investigated and some suggestions are made for how to avoid such errors.

Creating "good" leaders : exploring the integration of leadership and ethics in Canadian post-secondary education

Mueller, Robin Alison 22 July 2005
An examination of leadership and ethics literature demonstrates that, given the theoretical and practical links between the two subjects, they should also be linked within the context of adult post-secondary education. However, very little documented information exists with regard to the ways in which such integration of subject areas is achieved, and there is scant documentation indicating the kinds of pedagogical approaches that are employed for such a purpose. This study examined how the subject areas of leadership and ethics are conceptualized and integrated within the context of undergraduate credit courses at the University of Saskatchewan. The methods used to collect original data for this study were content analysis and qualitative interviews. The data collected in this study demonstrated that the integration of leadership and ethics subject areas is occurring, both implicitly and explicitly, in a variety of undergraduate courses offered through professional colleges at the University of Saskatchewan. The subjects of leadership and ethics are conceptualized in many different ways by course instructors; however, instructors perceive links between the two subject areas and expect their students to demonstrate an understanding of those links. The findings of this study will serve as a program planning resource for instructors who practice, or who wish to practice, the integration of leadership and ethics subject areas in their post-secondary classroom settings. In addition, the researcher concluded with some broad-based recommendations for further study, and suggestions regarding approaches to integration of leadership and ethics education at the University of Saskatchewan.

Fostering success in reading: a survey of teaching methods and collaboration practices of high performing elementary schools in Texas

Evans Jr., Richard Austin 16 August 2006 (has links)
This study examined reading programs in 68 Texas elementary schools that were identified as successful by their scores on TAAS assessment results in the 1999-2000 school year. These schools’ student populations had a high proportion of culturally diverse and low-SES students. The purposes of this study were: (1) to determine if and how teaching methods and collaboration (intervention/support teams) were used by effective schools to foster reading success in all students; (2) to identify cohesive patterns (clusters) or models in schools’ use of collaboration and teaching methods; (3) to examine these clusters of similar schools and see if the patterns differed based on the school/community demography (urban, suburban, or rural). The study was conducted in 68 schools in 33 school districts that represented various demographic settings from 12 different Education Service Centers across Texas. From these original 332 variables, 26 variables were selected that were of medium frequency and strongly correlated with high TAAS scores over a 4- year period. These 26 variables were used to examine the 68 high-performing Texas elementary schools for clusters. K-means analysis and HCA were both applied to the 26 response variables, using them as complementary techniques to arrive at a five cluster solution. Results from correlations of individual characteristics and from identifying school clusters suggested that school community type could possibly be moderately predictive of student performance on the TAAS/TAKS over time.

A Nordic case for Social Entrepreneurship : a narrated analysis

Westman, Ida January 2015 (has links)
This study centers on an exploration of the similarities and differences between social enterprises, commercial enterprises and public sector teams that operate within the same market. The study seeks to contribute to the establishment of social entrepreneurship theory by furthering knowledge of the boundaries of social entrepreneurship. The contextual influence on the development of social entrepreneurship theory is becoming increasingly well understood. As such, different theoretical streams are accounted for and systematically structured into a model containing four contextually anchored approaches, two American and two European, which compares their structures according to eight characteristics. It is on the basis of this model that three cases, one social enterprise, one commercial enterprise and one public sector team all operating towards work integration activities and placements for the long term unemployed are presented and analyzed from two perspectives: one focusing on how they compare to the characteristics and the other on how they compare to the approaches in their entirety. It shows how there are many similarities between the three cases that are lost when compared to each approach. Furthermore, the analysis discovered a limitation within existing social entrepreneurship models, as none of the models turned out to be fully applicable in a Swedish context. Therefore, this study proposes a tentative model for a Nordic approach, rooted in the specific socioeconomic and institutional context of the Nordic states.

The effects of plume property variation on odor plume navigation in turbulent boundary layer flows

Page, Jennifer Lynn 13 May 2009 (has links)
A significant body of research has focused on tracking behaviors of predators responding to prey odor plumes, yet little is known about the specific mechanisms by which predators make decisions during tracking that lead them to a source. This dissertation advances the current knowledge of plume tracking behavior by examining blue crab tracking behavior over a large range of bed-roughnesses (thereby manipulating ambient levels of turbulence), and interpreting these results with respect to chemical signal structure derived from separate examinations of plume characteristics as determined by planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF). Foraging success and the speed of blue crabs attempting to locate the odorant source both decline consistently with increasing bed roughness. In contrast, steering (path linearity) appears unaffected by bed roughness induced turbulence. The spatial arrangement of blue crab chemosensors combined with the three-dimensional structure of odorant plumes accounts for the differential effects of turbulence on the speed and success of crab tracking behavior. Separate examinations of tracking behavior and plume properties cannot directly examine hypotheses concerning the utility of specific chemical signal properties. In order to make a direct link between cue and behavior, three-dimensional laser induced fluorescence (3DLIF) was used to analyze three-dimensional plume structure and concentration of odor filaments that reach blue crab sensory structures. The corresponding tracking behavior was simultaneously recorded and then analyzed with a motion analysis system. These data provide the most comprehensive examination of odor signal input-behavioral output functions for animals in turbulent plumes. Crabs do not react differentially in response to the absolute concentration of antennule spikes above threshold at their antennules but do show a state-dependent acceleration response to antennule spikes. Signals arriving at the leg sensors of blue crabs help mediate upstream motion and signal change across a single set of leg sensors is sufficient to induce turning during upstream motion. Blue crabs decrease the height of their antennules in correspondence with changing plume properties as they approach the source and the timing of signals arriving at the antennules appears to affect upstream motion.
