Snoring sounds analysis: automatic detection, higher order statistics, and its application for sleep apnea diagnosis

Snoring is a highly prevalent disorder affecting 20-40% of adult population. Snoring is also a major indicative of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Despite the magnitude of effort, the acoustical properties of snoring in relation to physiological states are not yet known. This thesis explores statistical properties of snoring sounds and their association with OSA. First, an unsupervised technique was developed to automatically extract the snoring sound segments from the lengthy recordings of respiratory sounds. This technique was tested over 5665 snoring sound segments of 30 participants and the detection accuracy of 98.6% was obtained. Second, the relationship between anthropometric parameters of snorers with different degrees of obstruction and their snoring sounds’ statistical characteristics was investigated. Snoring sounds are non-Gaussian in nature; thus second order statistical methods such as power spectral analysis would be inadequate to extract information from snoring sounds. Therefore, higher order statistical features, in addition to the second order ones, were extracted. Third, the variability of snoring sound segments within and between 57 snorers with and without OSA was investigated. It was found that the sound characteristics of non-apneic (when there is no apneic event), hypopneic (when there is hypopnea), and post-apneic (after apnea) snoring events were significantly different. Then, this variability of snoring sounds was used as a signature to discriminate the non-OSA snorers from OSA snorers. The accuracy was found to be 96.4%. Finally, it was observed that some snorers formed distinct clusters of snoring sounds in a multidimensional feature space. Hence, using Polysomnography (PSG) information, the dependency of snoring sounds on body position, sleep stage, and blood oxygen level was investigated. It was found that all the three variables affected snoring sounds. However, body position was found to have the highest effect on the characteristics of snoring sounds. In conclusion, snoring sounds analysis offers valuable information on the upper airway physiological state and pathology. Thus, snoring sound analysis may further find its use in determining the exact state and location of obstruction.

Novel Applications of Multivariate Methods for Exploring Personality in African Elephants

Investigators have shown that elephants exhibit consistent individual differences in behavior by rating elephants using personality adjectives. These adjectives, however, are not based on pre-defined measurements of the behaviors performed. Instead, they are based on the observers’ interpretations of an animal’s behavioral patterns, therefore making them subject to observer bias. Furthermore, elephants have a capacity for learning; thus, they may alter their behavioral patterns over time. This behavioral plasticity in itself might be a way of measuring consistent behavioral differences among individuals. With this in mind, I approached elephant personality as a multivariate problem. I used behavioral observations collected from female elephants in Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa. Instead of grouping behaviors into subjective categories prior to analysis (as is often done in studies of elephant behavior), I used ordination methods to determine which correlations among behaviors were important for defining personality. Ordination methods were performed on matrices of the behavior data set and on subsets of behaviors for each age class. I calculated the angular differences among major axes of covariation from the ordinations of subsets to determine if the behaviors that defined personalities differed by age class. I also defined personalities by centroids (in multidimensional space) for non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) scores of each individual and dispersion of NMDS scores for each individual as a measure of behavioral plasticity. I analyzed the effects of plasticity and age on personality of individual elephants using a non-parametric multivariate analysis of variance. Major axes of covariation were not well defined and therefore not useful in describing differences among groups. The interaction of age and behavioral plasticity did have a significant effect on the personalities of individuals as defined by ordination centroid scores. This suggests that incorporating plasticity may be a helpful measurement in quantifying consistent behavioral differences among individuals.

Elucidating the fear - maintaining properties of the Ventral Tegmental Area

The ventral tegmental area (VTA) and its dopaminergic (DA) mesocorticolimbic projections are thought to be essential in the brain’s reward neurocircuitry. In humans and animal experimental subjects, mild electrical VTA stimulation increases dopamine levels and can induce euphoria. Paradoxically, aversive stimuli activate VTA neurons and forebrain DA activity, and excessive electrical stimulation of the VTA exaggerates fearfulness. Research suggests that experimental manipulation of either the amygdala or the VTA has similar effects on the acquisition and expression of Pavlovian conditioned fear. Recently it was demonstrated that electrical stimulation of the amygdala produced fear extinction deficits in rats. Fear extinction involves the progressive dissipation of conditioned fear responses by repeated non-reinforced exposure to a conditioned stimulus (CS). Maladaptive states of fear in fear-related anxiety disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) or specific phobias are thought to reflect fear extinction learning deficits. The primary purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of intra-VTA stimulation on fear extinction learning. Using fear-potentiated startle as a behavioural index of conditioned fear, it was found that 120 VTA stimulations paired or unpaired with non-reinforced CS presentations impaired the extinction of conditioned fear. This effect was not apparent in rats that received electrical stimulation of the substantia nigra (SN), suggesting that not all midbrain regions respond similarly. Electrical stimulation parameters did not have aversive affects because rats failed to show fear conditioning when electrical VTA stimulation was used as the unconditioned stimulus. Also, VTA stimulation did not alter conditioned fear expression in non-extinguished animals. Based on the results it is suggested that VTA activation disinhibited conditioned fear responding. Therefore, VTA neuronal excitation by aversive stimuli may play a role in fear-related anxiety disorders thought to reflect extinction learning deficits.

Flickor och pojkar eller tusen pyttesmå kön : Posthumanistiska perspektiv på könade tillblivelser i förskolans pedagogiska dokumentationer

Syftet med studien är att undersöka hur flickor och pojkar framträder i förskolans pedagogiska dokumentation samt hur dessa könspositioner kan framträda på andra sätt när bilderna samläses med posthumanistiska teorier och begrepp. Diskursiva och diffraktiva analyser har genomförts på några förskolors pedagogiska dokumentationer utifrån frågeställningar om vilka diskurser om kön som materialiseras i bildmaterialet samt hur posthumanistiska begrepp kan bidra till en annan förståelse för barnens könspositionering. I linje med tidigare forskning på området visar studien att aktivitet och lärande ges en mer framträdande roll i den pedagogiska dokumentationen än omsorg och lek. Posthumanistiska teoribildningar möjliggör dock läsningar där fokus skiftar från flickors och pojkars olika sätt att positionera sig/positioneras som exempelvis maskulint aktiva eller feminint omsorgsfulla till att handla om de intra-aktioner som uppstår mellan barn, material och diskurser. Sådana läsningar öppnar för tillblivelser där individer omfattar både manliga och kvinnliga positioner, där kön följaktligen blir ointressant som kategoriseringsprincip.

Intra-Cortical Microelectrode Arrays for Neuro-Interfacing

Neuro-engineering is an emerging multi-disciplinary domain which investigates the electrophysiological activities of the nervous system. It provides procedures and techniques to explore, analyze and characterize the functions of the different components comprising the nervous system. Neuro-engineering is not limited to research applications; it is employed in developing unconventional therapeutic techniques for treating different neurological disorders and restoring lost sensory or motor functions. Microelectrodes are principal elements in functional electric stimulation (FES) systems used in electrophysiological procedures. They are used in establishing an interface with the individual neurons or in clusters to record activities and communications, as well as modulate neuron behaviour through stimulation. Microelectrode technologies progressed through several modifications and innovations to improve their functionality and usability. However, conventional electrode technologies are open to further development, and advancement in microelectrodes technology will progressively meliorate the neuro-interfacing and electrotherapeutic techniques. This research introduced design methodology and fabrication processes for intra-cortical microelectrodes capable of befitting a wide range of design requirements and applications. The design process was employed in developing and implementing an ensemble of intra-cortical microelectrodes customized for different neuro-interfacing applications. The proposed designs presented several innovations and novelties. The research addressed practical considerations including assembly and interconnection to external circuitry. The research was concluded by exhibiting the Waterloo Array which is a high channel count flexible 3-D neuro-interfacing array. Finally, the dissertation was concluded by demonstrating the characterization, in vitro and acute in vivo testing results of the Waterloo Array. The implemented electrodes were tested and benchmarked against commercial equivalents and the results manifested improvement in the electrode performance compared to conventional electrodes. Electrode testing and evaluation were conducted in the Krembil Neuroscience Centre Research Lab (Toronto Western Hospital), and the Neurosciences & Mental Health Research Institute (the Sick Kids hospital). The research results and outcomes are currently being employed in developing chronic intra-cortical and electrocorticography (ECoG) electrode arrays for the epilepsy research and rodents nervous system investigations. The introduced electrode technologies will be used to develop customized designs for the clinical research labs collaborating with CIRFE Lab.

Three essays on the economics of labour and the family

This dissertation includes three papers that address various aspects of the economics of labour and the family. The dissertation integrates the discussion on the following issues: (1) the allocation of housework and childcare in Canadian two-earner households (2) the effect of family policy reform on time allocation and labour supply in two-parent families (3) effect of anticipated divorce and divorce duration on male and female labour supply. The first paper Time Allocation Gender Gap in Native-born and Foreign-born Families in Canada focuses on the difference between the housework and childcare share produced by foreign-born husbands compared to Canadian-born husbands. This empirical analysis employs the data from the Canadian General Social Survey. The results show that foreign-born husbands have a lower share of housework and childcare compared to their Canadian-born counterparts. The second paper The effect of Quebec childcare policy change on the labour market outcomes and time distribution in the family analyzes the effect of the childcare policy change that took place in Quebec in 1997-2000. The results show that the introduction of “$5 per day” daycare subsidized by the Quebec government increased the labour supply of married mothers and also affected the allocation of time husbands and wives spend on housework and childcare. The data from this project were drawn from 1996 and 2001 Canadian Census. The third paper Labour supply of Australian men and women before and after divorce studies the changes in the labour supply of men and women before and after divorce. The data for empirical analysis employs 12 waves of Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey (HILDA). The outcome suggests that men and women do not change labour participation and weekly working hours in anticipation of divorce. Women increase labour force participation and weekly hours worked as a result of divorce. Men’s labour supply does not change in response to divorce.

A Systematic Review of Meta-Analyses on the Cognitive Sequelae of mild Traumatic Brain Injury and an Empirical Study on Executive Functions and Intra-Individual Variability following Concussion

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI), often called concussion, has become a growing public health concern, prevalent in both athletic and military settings. In response, many researchers have explored cognitive outcomes post-mTBI, with a plethora of meta-analyses summarizing these findings; however, these meta-analyses examine solely mean performances on cognitive tasks, ignoring intra-individual variability (IIV) in cognitive performance that may elucidate neuropsychological impairment following mTBI. The current thesis involved two studies, responding to both the growing meta-analytic research and limited IIV findings. Study 1: Many meta-analyses have amalgamated individual study results on post-mTBI neuropsychological outcomes. With the abundance of meta-analyses, a systematic review of meta-analyses stands as the next logical step. Method: A systematic literature search yielded 11 meta-analyses meeting inclusion criteria (i.e., English-language systematic reviews/meta-analyses covering post-mTBI observational cognitive research on late adolescents/adults), with their findings qualitatively synthesized based on moderator variables (i.e., cognitive domain, time since injury, past head injury, participant characteristics, comparison group, assessment technique, and persistent symptoms). Results: The overall effect sizes ranged for both general (range: .07-.61) and sports-related mTBI (range: .40-.81) and differed both between and within cognitive domains, with executive functions appearing most sensitive to multiple mTBI. Cognitive domains varied in recovery rates, but overall recovery occurred by 90 days post-injury for most individuals and by seven days post-injury for athletes. Greater age/education and male gender produced smaller effects sizes, while high school athletes suffered the largest deficits post-mTBI. Control-group comparisons yielded larger effects than within-person designs, while assessment techniques had limited moderating effects. Conclusions: Overall, meta-analytic review quality remained low with few studies assessing publication or study quality bias. Meta-analyses consistently identified adverse acute mTBI-related effects and fairly rapid symptom resolution. Study 2: The long-term outcomes of executive functions and IIV following mTBI are unclear due to inconsistent and limited research, respectively. Further, the relationship between physical activity (PA) and cognitive performance at young adulthood remains almost fully unexplored. In turn, the current study aimed to (a) assess the diagnostic utility of both executive functions and IIV at predicting mTBI history and (b) evaluate the interaction between PA levels and mTBI on both of these cognitive metrics. Method: Altogether 138 self-identified athletes (Mage = 19.9 ± 1.91 years, 60.8% female, 19.6% 1 mTBI, 18.1% 2+ mTBIs) completed three executive-related cognitive tasks (i.e., N-Back, Go/No-go, Local-Global). Ordinal logistic regression analyses examined the joint effect of person-mean and IIV as predictors of mTBI status. Multi-level models examined mTBI and PA levels as predictors of trial-to-trial changes in performance. Results: Only mean response time (RT) for the Local-Global task predicted mTBI status, while no IIV variables reached unique significance. PA levels predicted subtle within-task decreases in RT across Local-Global trials. Conclusions: IIV research on mTBI remains limited; however, the preliminary results do not indicate any additional predictive value of IIV indices above mean performances. For executive functions, shifting appeared most affected, with past researchers identifying post-mTBI impairment in attentional processing. The Cuban Missile Crisis has been considered by political scientists and historians as one of the most critical point in U.S. – Soviet relations during the Cold War and probably the only case of the possibility of the nuclear exchange was on highest level. The Cuban Missile Crisis was considered to be a part of continued political game of the ideological struggle between the leaders of United States and Soviet Union. However, the fact of the existence of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba created situation for U.S. government to decide what course of actions should be taken and not escalate a further confrontation, which could lead to a mutual nuclear exchange. The suggestions to such course of actions were coming from different members of the Executive Committee of the National Council or EXCOMM, which did make impact on U.S. president’s decision making in relation to Soviet installation of nuclear missiles in Cuba in October 1962.  The focus of this study relied on outcome of the decisions taken on secret meetings within the Executive Committee of the National Security Council or EXCOMM (included U.S. president as member of this committee) during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962. The results of this study show if inter – and intragroup conflicts within EXCOOM made such impact on decision making outcome.

The pricing relationship between the FTSE 100 stock index and FTSE 100 stock index futures contract

This thesis investigates the pricing relationship between the FTSE 100 Stock Index and the FTSE 100 Stock Index futures market. We develop and apply a framework in which it is possible to evaluate whether or not markets can be said to function effectively and efficiently. The framework is applied to both the daily and intra-daily pricing relationship between the aforementioned markets. In order to analyse the pricing relationship within days, we develop a new method to remove the effects of nonsynchronous trading from the FTSE 100 Index. We find that on a daily basis the markets generally function effectively, although this does not carryover to the intra-daily pricing relationship. This is especially true during the October 1987 stock market crash, where it is argued that a possible cause of the breakdown lies with the stock market. If this is the case, then any regulation should be aimed at the stock market, not the stock index futures market.
