The value of docket analysis in stranger rape investigations : a case study in Port Elizabeth

In this research docket analysis is evaluated as an investigative tool in stranger rape cases. Owing to the fact that serial rapists mostly reside within the category of stranger rape cases, the researcher attempted to test the value of docket analysis in the identification of patterns and similarities among such cases which could be indicative of serial rape activity. A rape matrix was used as a docket analysis tool to analyse the content of 184 stranger rape cases which was closed as ‘undetected’. In addition to investigative shortcomings in the case dockets, the researcher identified 15 stranger rape cases which presented six unique patterns among them. Handwriting as individualisation technique in fraud investigation

The aim of this research is to investigate how handwriting as an individualisation technique in fraud investigation can be used by police detectives, SARS investigators and forensic investigation specialists, who are responsible for the investigation and linking the perpetrator, with a view to criminal prosecution. A further intent was to share and introduce a number of important concepts, namely: criminal investigation, identification, individualisation, fraud, evidence and handwriting. The research will explain the sophisticated investigation techniques used to obtain sufficient information to prove the true facts in a court of law. Identification is the collective aspect of the set of characteristics by which an object is definitively recognisable or known, while the individual characteristics establish the individuality of a specific object. Many types of evidence may be used to link an individual with a crime scene, and associate that individual with the performed illegal handling. It also explained that during a cheque/document fraud investigation, it is in most cases the only link to information to trace, identify and individualise the perpetrator, and to obtain a handwriting specimen. It is also discussed how to eliminate a person being a writer of a document, and how to collect, package and mark a disputed document during the investigation. If the investigators use their knowledge of these concepts, it should enhance their investigative skills, and empower them to be become better equipped for the challenges they face in identifying, individualising and linking the perpetrators, in order to ensure successful prosecution and conviction. / Police Practice / M.Tech. Procedures for searching evidence in the investigation of computer-related crime in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe

Text in English / The continued advancement in myriad technological, societal and legal issues has affected the investigation of computer aided crimes. The investigators are confronted with tremendous impediments as the computer aided and traditional crime scenes differ. The study sought to analyse the procedures for searching evidence in the investigation of computer-related crime with the intention to improve admissibility of such evidence. The researcher employed empirical design to reach conclusions based upon evidence collected from observations and real life experiences. This aided the researcher to obtain information through face-to-face interviews. The study was qualitative in approach as it consisted of a set of interpretive and material practices that make the real social world visible. The training curriculum for investigators should include aspects of computer-related crime investigation, search and seizure of computer evidence. Search and collection of computer-related evidence should be done preferably by qualified forensic experts, so that evidence is accepted in court. / Police Practice / M. Tech. Ensinar ciências fazendo ciência : uma experiência na educação básica do semiárido brasileiro

Propõe-se com essa pesquisa avaliar a metodologia da investigação científica Ensinar Ciências fazendo Ciência no contexto da prática, numa perspectiva de construção de paradigmas de ensino na educação básica. Trata-se de um estudo de caso realizado nos cursos de Férias, patrocinado pelo Espaço Ciências, com professores e gestores do sistema municipal de ensino, e, estudantes do curso de Licenciatura em Ciências Biológicas do Centro de Ensino Superior do Vale do São Francisco. Participaram também desta pesquisa 25 tutores que aplicaram essa metodologia em suas aulas no ensino Fundamental e Médio. Os resultados demonstram aprovação da metodologia, sendo avaliada pelos participantes do curso de Férias como excelente por 76% dos gestores, 57% dos professores e 100% dos estudantes do curso de Ciências Biológicas. Corroborado por 100% dos tutores que aplicaram essa metodologia no ensino fundamental e Médio, como boa (nota 9) e excelente(10). Em relação à metodologia investigada foram avaliadas as seguintes categorias: participação dos estudantes, aprendizagem, quantidade e qualidade de conteúdos, competências e habilidades mobilizadas pelos estudantes da educação básica, bem como a percepção dos ministrantes quanto às vantagens e desvantagens na aplicação da metodologia para os respectivos níveis de escolaridade. / It is proposed in this research was to evaluate the methodology of scientific research Teaching Science doing science in the context of practice, from the perspective of construction of educational paradigms in basic education. Regarding the methodology investigated the following categories were evaluated: student participation, learning, quantity and quality of content, skills and mobilized skills by students of basic education, as well as the perception of worshipers as the advantages and disadvantages in the application of the methodology for their levels of education.

Metodologicamente, qualificamos nossa pesquisa como qualitativa interpretativa que utiliza as narrativas como objeto de estudo, a qual propõe que as narrativas são histórias de aprendizagens dos alunos por meio dos seus processos vividos e de suas experiências. A coleta de dados foi realizada junto aos alunos da 8ª série do Ensino Fundamental do Colégio Adventista de Barra do Bugres/MT. Para isso, utilizamos gravações em áudio, entrevistas, diários de bordo do pesquisador, narrativas escritas, questionários e observações diretas como procedimentos metodológicos para a coleta de dados da pesquisa. Destacamos, também, a perspectiva metodológica das Investigações Matemáticas de acordo com Ponte (2003) e Abrantes et al. (1999), com as tarefas de natureza exploratório-investigativas envolvendo o tema Funções. Na análise realizada, evidenciamos indícios de uma cultura diferenciada, a qual valoriza aspectos argumentativos e comunicativos em sala de aula. Esses aspectos se apresentam como potencialidades didático-pedagógicas das narrativas para o processo de ensinar e aprender Funções. / This research presents the didactic and pedagogical possibilities of narratives by means of the methodological perspective of Mathematical Investigation context in the teaching of the function concept. Thus being, we weave some considerações regarding the narratives in the context of the classroom with the intention of detaches-lass as a way to also make possible the communication of mathematical ideas in classroom. With these perspectives, we search to answer to the following problem of inquiry: what are the didactic-pedagogical possibilities of narratives in the functions teaching context? In that way, we aim to investigate and to headlight the didactic-pedagogical possibilities of narratives in the process of teaching and learning functions. Methodologically, we characterize our research as qualitative interpretative that uses the narratives as object of analysis to disclose its didactic-pedagogical potentialities in the education of functions. The data collection was taken with students of a last-middle-school class of School Adventist of Barra do Bugres/MT, for that, we used audio recordings, interviews, researcher s on a board diary, written narratives, questionnaires and direct observations as devices to collect data research. We detach, also, the methodological perspective of the Mathematical Inquiries in accordance with Ponte (2003) and Abrantes et al. (1999), with the exploratório - investigativas tasks of nature involving the subject Functions. In the carried through analysis, we evidence indications of differentiated culture, which values argumentations and communications aspects in classroom. These aspects if present potentialities of the narratives will be the process you teach and you learn functions.

Methods of investigation of crimes committed by youth Methodology for investigation of crimes committed by youth is a compact system of procedures used by criminalists while investigating crimes committed by youth. For purposes of this thesis the term youth includes the category of age from twelve to twenty-four years. Well-elaborated methodology shall help criminalists to quickly and effectively deal with situations when there is a reasonable suspicion due to found traces, or method of committing a crime, that the offender was a person of this age category. This thesis introduces typical personal and psychological characteristics of youth. The thesis outlines which crimes are committed by this group most commonly and which factors cause the delinquent behavior of youth. The thesis presents typical traces which occur when youth commits crime, and methods of committing which point to the young age of offenders. According to these characters we can assume that the crime was committed by youth offender and therefore it is important to use a special methodology for the investigation. O objeto primordial desta dissertação é conceituar a investigação criminal defensiva, sob a ótica da eficiência e do garantismo, e demonstrar a necessidade deste instituto nos ordenamentos jurídicos em que a investigação pública é tendencialmente acusatória. Para tanto, nos dois capítulos iniciais, esclarecem-se alguns aspectos gerais condizentes ao tema em análise, a saber: a definição de investigação criminal e suas principais características; a questão da parcialidade do Ministério Público e a investigação do crime por este órgão; e a definição de inquérito policial e sua disciplina legal no Brasil. Em seguida, aborda-se a relação da investigação defensiva com os princípios constitucionais da igualdade e da ampla defesa, que se encontram na base de um processo penal acusatório e asseguram às partes igual oportunidade de comprovarem os seus argumentos. Por conta disso, se um sistema jurídico prescreve a investigação do crime pelo próprio órgão acusatório, é de rigor que o imputado tenha direito equivalente, sob pena de se violar os mencionados direitos fundamentais. Ademais, a investigação defensiva, ao permitir a obtenção de elementos que serão contrapostos à investigação pública, amplia o campo cognitivo do Magistrado, o qual disporá de um maior número de dados materiais para fundamentar decisão acerca da viabilidade da acusação e da adoção de medidas cautelares. Após a análise constitucional da investigação defensiva, estuda-se o tratamento conferido pelo Direito estrangeiro a esta matéria, particularmente na Itália, onde o tema está em voga e é objeto de importantes e auspiciosos debates jurídicos. Ao final, a dissertação cuida da concretização da investigação defensiva, isto é, o modo como deve se desenvolver, as suas limitações, a utilização do seu resultado e a possibilidade de inserção no ordenamento jurídico pátrio. / The main subject of this dissertation is to create a concept of the criminal defense investigation, under the efficiency and the guarantism perspectives, and to demonstrate the need of such institute in the legal system in which the public investigation has an acusatory tendency. For this purpose, in the first two chapters, the dissertation clarifies certain general aspects regarding the subject under analysis, such as: the definition of criminal investigation and its main characteristics; the question of partiality of the Public Prosecutor\' s Office and the criminal investigation ran by this office; and the definition of criminal investigation and its legal regulation in Brazil. Following, the dissertation approachs the relation of defensive investigation with the constitutional principles of equality and of full defense, which are in the base of an accusatory criminal procedure and assure the parties equal opportunities to prove their arguments. For this reason, if a legal system provides for a criminal investigation to be conducted by the accusatory party itself, it is imperative that the accused has equivalent rights, otherwise the legal system will be violating the above mentioned fundamental rights. Furthermore, in allowing gathering elements which shall be confronted with the official investigation, the defense investigation expands the cognitive field of the Magistrate, who will have more material data to pronounce a decision regarding the accusation\'s viability and the adoption of cautionary measures. After the constitutional analysis of the defense investigation, the dissertation enters into the foreign law on this subject, particularly from Italy, where the matter is highly in evidence and is the subject of important and auspicious legal debates. In the end, the dissertation provides for the materialization of the defense investigation, i.e., the manner in which it shall be developed, its limitations, the use of its results and the possible insert in our national legal ordinance.

Um estudo sobre as estratégias de resolução de questões da OBMEP

Esta dissertação apresenta uma proposta de aprendizagem que consiste no desenvolvimento de uma pesquisa utilizando, como material didático, algumas questões da Olimpíada Brasileira de Matemática das Escolas Públicas (OBMEP), acompanhadas de experimentação no Ensino Fundamental e Ensino Médio. As questões selecionadas permitem diferentes formas de resolução, em especial por serem questões discursivas transversais e pseudotransversais da segunda fase. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida durante 8 encontros com 52 alunos de duas escolas da rede pública estadual de ensino, no período de agosto e setembro de 2014. O principal objetivo foi elaborar uma sequência de atividades ou material didático que evidenciasse a importância das estratégias usadas pelos alunos na resolução dos problemas. As diferentes estratégias utilizadas pelos participantes da pesquisa foram analisadas de acordo com a teoria da Resolução de Problemas (segundo Polya e Onuchic-Allevato), com ênfase para a construção de um Cenário para a Investigação (Skovsmose). Ao refletir sobre e analisar as estratégias registradas na busca da solução dos problemas, professor-aluno, percebemos que as mesmas favorecem para a compreensão de conceitos e conteúdos matemáticos. Além disso, promovem a aprendizagem e o desenvolvimento do raciocínio matemático. / This work presents a learning proposal which is based on the development of a research using some questions from the Brazilian Math Olympiads of Public Schools (OBMEP – Olimpíada Brasileira de Matemática das Escolas Públicas) as teaching materials, followed by experimentation in elementary and high school. The selected questions allow different solving ways; especially because they are discursive cross- questions and pseudo cross of the second phase. The research was conducted during eight meetings with 52 students from two schools of the public school system, between August and September 2014. The main objective was to develop a sequence of activities or teaching materials that showed the importance of the strategies used by the students in solving the problems. The different strategies used by the participants were analyzed according to the theory of Problem Solving (Polya and Onuchic-Allevato), with emphasis on the construction of a Landscapes of Investigation (Skovsmose). By reflecting about it and analyzing the recorded strategies in the search for solving the problems, teacher-student, we conclude that these questions foment for the understanding of the mathematical concepts and content. Besides, they promote learning and development of mathematical logic.
