The present work on social strangement begin with some general theoretichal reflexions, in a atempt to prepare the field for a better comprehesion of the dilemas and conflicts that emerges from it. It starts with a discusion of the paper “The Stranger”, in wich Freud seeks to comprehend the cause of the sensacion of strangement. Then it is shown the contribution of Georg Simmel, through his reflexions about the “stranger”, the urban life, etc. From Pierre Bourdieu, it is explored his theory about social class and social space, specially the relation between the phisical and social space and the struggle for class distinction and hegemony in a field. It is also discused the analisys of the diferenciation of value spheres, the desechantment of the world and the conditions of the sensation of social belonging in Max Weber, and the theory of recognition in Axel Honneth. Some of the features of “the stranger” are ilustrated with the novel “The Stranger”, from Albert Camus. From this, it is identified two poles of the strangement: invisibiity and chock. The first pole is worked out from the conception that social invisibility derives directly from class strangement (as a kind of anesthesic resource), and the second is more related with a intencional strangement, as a subversive atitude, or a “struggle for recognition” of a particular lifestyle or way of behavior. In the following, it is discused the works of Howard Becker and Zygmunt Bauman that demonstrates important contributions for the comprehension of “social strangement”, although they go apart of the present work in important questions. In the second part, it is explored the strangement related with the social invisibility throught a empirical work with “garbage pickers” and a homeless man.

<b>Psychological Similarities and Differences Between Invisibility and Hypervisibility in Black Individuals</b>

Eboni Bradley (11161158) 06 August 2024 (has links)
<p dir="ltr">The feeling of invisibility threatens fundamental needs and negatively affects mood. One could conclude from this research that more visibility should minimize need threats and negative moods. However, studies have also shown that, in some instances, experiences of hypervisibility are distressing. Social media is flooded with videos and articles of Black men and women feeling invisible in the medical fields and not receiving the treatment they deserve. Likewise, social media examples abound of Black individuals feeling monitored in retail situations or being killed by the police because of racial stereotypes. Researchers also found adverse experiences of invisibility or hypervisibility among Black individuals that appear to be contradictory at a phenomenological level. My research aims to assess how invisibility and hypervisibility are experienced qualitatively and how manipulations of invisibility and hypervisibility may cause different psychological effects. In Study 1, Black participants were asked to recall their experiences with both invisibility and hypervisibility. Participants had little difficulty reporting both experiences, in which strangers either dismissed, ignored, and excluded them or spotlighted them because of race-based stereotypes. Coding themes also showed that participants could recall positive events and emotions when asked about hypervisibility but not invisibility. In Study 2, I manipulated invisibility and hypervisibility using a novel method: comics. Results showed that Black participants experienced threatened needs when reading a comic about a Black child being invisible or hypervisible. However, their needs were more threatened when the child recalls an invisibility experience. Lastly, in Study 3, I replicated Study 2 but also added necessary control conditions. Additionally, I examined the impact of comic-induced invisibility and hypervisibility on cognitive interference using a Stroop test. The results of Study 2 were replicated, but there was no difference in cognitive interference between the conditions. In summary, although the present research shows that invisibility and hypervisibility are both aversive, invisibility leads Black individuals to feel worse and have lower need satisfaction. Additionally, invisibility and hypervisibility threaten the needs of self-esteem and control similarly, but invisibility leads to more threats to belonging and meaningful existence than does hypervisibility. Using an innovative method of comics, my research demonstrates the aversive psychological impact of invisibility as well as the aversive reactions to hypervisibility. Future research should focus on whether hypervisibility is primarily detrimental because the individual may feel that while their stereotypic physical or social features are highly noticed, their core attributes of what makes them a person are not.</p>

How the Online Disinhibition Effect Affects the Online Video Game Industry

Monjezizadeh, Ladbon, Untoro, Alex January 2016 (has links)
Extensive computer use is creating a society where its citizens are communicating outside the norm of real life. These diversions from real life communication behavior have been named the Online Disinhibition Effect (ODE). The effect is a psychological model that is structured with different types of elements which can be triggered by different communication mediums. There are two sides of the effect; a benign, where compassion and a reveal of emotions are more likely, and a toxic, where anger, frustration and threats are in focus. In the online video game industry, ODE is active, but as the medium is different than regular internet use the effects are different as well. This paper looks at how online video games are affected by ODE. By using the most current disinhibition model made by Suler and looking at modern cyberpsychology in online games, this paper found eight features that have the possibility to decrease disinhibition amongst users. This paper concludes with a warning that games are becoming more immersive and without the proper authority features, games will increase their disinhibition effect amongst its users.

Nation as Decoration : The InVisibility of the US Flag in Sweden

Sundkvist, Moa January 2015 (has links)
This project explores banal nationalism from a perspective where the visibility and usage of the US flag as decoration on everyday products in Sweden is problematized. In comparison with the Swedish flag which has a history of being “unwaved” because open nationalism for a long time has been thought of as vulgar in Sweden, the frequent reproduction of the US flag seems to elude a critical discussion on national expressions. The effects of using a national symbol for commercial purposes is therefore theoretically and practically researched. / <p>The full thesis contains copyrighted material which has been removed in the published version. </p>

The challenge of obesity in hospitals : elements of economic sociology on dealing with a chronic disease

Sajus, Jean-Philippe 24 September 2012 (has links)
Scientific reports indicate that the progression of obesity is irremediable. It represents a considerable health risk for individuals and threatens our health system with collapse. This alarming fact has led the public authorities to tackle the problem head-on. In view of their central position in the care system, hospital is required to organize in order to respond to this veritable healthcare tsunami. The situation of hospital does, however, offer an astonishing contrast. The illness appears to be invisible in the healthcare services. In the field of eating disorders, obesity is not in the foreground. It is a “secondary” disease. Outside university hospitals, or specialized centers, it is only of concern to very few hospitals. In those establishments in which obesity has been given a high profile, though, the current hospital model, focused on rational healthcare, scientific progress and medical performance involving impressive technical platforms, is being shaken up. In a scenario of increased hospital work and of changes in funding mechanisms, dealing with obesity obliges these institutions to reflect on professional practices, opening up to their environment. New forms of cooperation are created with local agents who ensure the maintenance of social connections for obese patients and who help to prevent the disease from developing.

Transformations d’espaces et applications électromagnétiques dans les domaines optiques et micro-ondes / Transformations electromagnetics and applications in the microwave and optics domain

Tichit, Paul-Henri 16 February 2012 (has links)
This phD work is an original and important contribution to the understanding of transformation optics and paves the way to the design of new electromagnetic structures. The coupling between this innovative technique and metamaterials has led to prototypes with unique properties. We have thus developed an invisibility polygonal cloak, an electromagnetic taper, a directional antenna and isotropic source. The realization of our high-directive antenna with this method is the only prototype in the literature that combines controlled variations of the permittivity and permeability from electric and magnetic resonators. The ultimate control of light from an engineering space will find its usefulness in fundamental research but also for engineers and developers who are looking for more precision in the design of electromagnetic devices.

Where my Girls at?: The Interpellation of Women in Gangsta Hip-Hop

Craft, Chanel R 01 August 2010 (has links)
This thesis interrogates gangsta hip-hop for the unique attention it plays to the drug trade. I read theories of hypervisibility/invisibility and Louis Althusser’s theory of interpellation alongside hip-hop feminist theory to examine the Black female criminal subjectivity that operates within hip-hop. Using methods of discourse analysis, I question the constructions of gangster femininity in rap lyrics as well as the absences of girlhood on Season 4 of HBO’s television drama The Wire. In doing so, I argue that the discursive construction of Black female subjectivity within gangsta hip-hop provides a hypervisibility that portrays Black women as violent while simultaneously erasing the broader social processes that impact the lives of Black women and girls. Hip-hop feminism allows the cultural formations of hip-hop to be read against the politics that structure the lives of women of color in order to provide a lens for analyzing how their criminality is constructed through media.
