A Numerical Analysis of Shock Angles from Inward Turning Axisymmetric Flows

Detonation-based propulsion systems are known for their high efficiency and energy release when compared to deflagrative systems, making them an ideal candidate in hypersonic propulsion applications. One such engine is the Oblique Detonation Wave (ODW) engine, which has a similar architecture to traditional scramjets but shortens the combustor and isolator to an anchored ODW after fuel injection. Previous research has focused on using a two-dimensional wedge to induce an ODW while limiting total losses through the combustor. In this configuration, a two-dimensional wedge-based architecture entails a rectangular duct, limiting potential inlet design and increasing overall skin friction. However, an inward-turning axisymmetric ODW wedge architecture, where a two-dimensional wedge is revolved around a central axis, has yet to be examined in detail. The work at present aims to investigate the fundamental physics required to predict the Oblique Shock Wave (OSW) for an inward-turning axisymmetric flow, which is critical for designing a circular ODW engine combustor. Multiple steady simulations of inviscid and ideal air at Mach 4, 6, and 8 were performed over a 1-inch wedge with wedge angles of 16°, 18°, and 20°. The radius of the inlet boundary was also varied between 1, 3, and 5 inches to examine the effect of increasing the blockage ratio. The results showed that the shock angle for an inward-turning axisymmetric flow was up to 8% steeper than the analytical, two-dimensional wedge solution. Additionally, it was found that the OSW diverged further from the two-dimensional solution when the blockage ratio was increased. These findings provide insight into the flow physics that must be considered when designing inward-turning axisymmetric ODW engines.

A High Accuracy Microwave Radiometric Thermometer to Measure Internal Body Temperature

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released heat illness data which highlighted that ~29 heat stress hospitalizations and ~3 heat-related deaths occurred every day during the summer months within the US from years 2000 to 2014. Heatstroke- the most severe form of heat illness which oftentimes lead to death- has been cited to be entirely preventable if a timely intervention is introduced. This dissertation uses microwave radiometric thermometry to perform wireless non-invasive internal body temperature monitoring which can enable intervention methods that help to prevent deaths associated with heat-illness. Overall, this dissertation develops a comprehensive closed-form analytical radiometric model and validates the effectiveness of the comprehensive model through a controlled life-like human body temperature sensing experiment. Wireless sub-skin temperature data is predicted from a human tissue mimicking phantom testbed to within 1%. A generic isolated radiometer system equation is derived for all possible calibration source combinations. The generic isolated radiometer system equation predicts comparable results to that of an ideal simulation. While improved isolation decreases measurement uncertainty, it does not improve the accuracy of estimated noise temperatures using a perfectly-isolated radiometer system equation assumption. A highly reproducible tissue-mimicking biological phantom (bio-phantom) recipe (comprised of urethane, graphite powder, and a solvent) was developed to accurately emulate the electrical properties of actual dry human skin versus frequency up to 18 GHz. The developed solid state skin phantom begins in pourable liquid form and then cures at room temperature into a dry solid state mold. An in-plane electromagnetic bandgap structure was developed and integrated within an on-body inward facing spiral antenna design. The inclusion of the in-plane electromagnetic bandgap structure demonstrated a +2.64dB gain improvement in the antenna broadside and -8dB in the rear gain while in-contact with the body as compared to the conventional spiral antenna. Likewise, the measured main beam efficiency is improved from 54.43% for the conventional antenna to 86.36% for the EBG antenna. Two techniques based on signal-flow graph theory were derived to explain both the non-coherent steady-state radiative transfer and the coherent radiative transfer within multi-layered dielectric media with non-uniform temperatures and any number of stratified layers. Both models allow for the accurate characterization and sensing of the thermal emissions originating from subsurface tissue layers.

Tokia tema aktuali tarptautinės prekybos kontekste, kadangi minėtų procedūrų vykdymas leidžia ūkio subjektams naudotis pigesnėmis žaliavomis arba pigesne darbo jėga bei teikia kai kurių kitų privalumų ir tokiu būdu padidinamas prekių konkurencingumas pasaulinėje rinkoje. Perdirbimo procedūrų taikymas teigiamai įtakoja bendras valstybės eksporto apimtis, gerina darbo rinkos padėtį ir prisideda prie tarptautinės prekybos liberalizavimo. Darbe siekiama išanalizuoti perdirbimo muitinės procedūrų teisinį reglamentavimą (pradedant tarptautinėmis konvencijomis ir baigiant Lietuvos Respublikos teisės aktais) ir įvertinti kokią realią įtaką šių procedūrų vykdymas turi šalies eksporto ir importo apimtims. Syftet med denna studie var att belysa vilka omvårdnadsåtgärder vårdpersonal på en slutenpsykiatrisk avdelning angav vara av betydelse för patienter med emotionellt instabil personlighetsstörning (EIP). Metod För att svara på syftet i denna studie valdes metoden kvalitativ innehållsanalys av halvstrukturerade intervjuer med 6 vårdare som arbetade på slutenpsykiatriskavdelning med speciell inriktning mot vård av personer med EIP. Resultat Genom innehållsanalys av intervjuerna framkom tre teman med tillhörande subteman. Tema 1: Att hantera utåtagerande symptom, subteman: Att hantera splitting, Att hantera ångest, utspel och självskada. Tema 2: Att arbeta tillsammans för att nå omvårdnadsmål, subteman: Enhetligt förhållningssätt, Struktur i omvårdnaden. Tema 3: Att bygga upp en individ, subteman: Att skapa en tillitsfull relation, Att rusta patienten för utskrivning, Tid som en faktor i omvårdnaden, Att vara tillgänglig för patienterna, Självförtroendets del i ökad hälsa, En inre trygghet är en grund för positiv utveckling, Omvårdnaden utförs i ett medmänskligt samspel. The Method that was used was qualitative content analysis of face-to-face semi structured interviews with six caregivers of an in-patient ward that was specialized in caring for BPD patients. The Result of the content analysis emerged into three themes with subthemes. Theme number one was: To handle symptoms, the subthemes were To handle splitting, To handle acting out behaviors, anguish and self mutilations. Theme number two was: Working together to reach care-giving goals, the subthemes where: Unanimous attitudes, Structured care-giving. Theme number three was: To strengthen a person, the subthemes where: To create trust in the care-relationship , To prepare the patient for the transcription, Recovery takes time, To be available, Incising self-confidence for grater health, An inner confidence as a ground for personal grout. The care is set in an interpersonal relationship. The Conclusion was that the subthemes reflected what was important in the care of patients diagnosed with BPD.

The subject of this diploma thesis is the library of the state castle Litomyšl that was created as a product of the state institutions in the second half of the 20th century. The thesis deals with the topic in two fundamental segments - theoretical and practical. The theoretical part provides comprehensive processing of the library history and analysis of the particular unit especially from the topical, chronological and geographical point of view. The paper also focuses on the language, provenance as well as physical condition of the books and especially the graphics of the prints. From a thematic point of view, particular emphasis is placed on the most interesting, though not very numerous, group of religious prints and manuscripts. The practical part of the thesis, which consists in the cataloguing of the fund, brings the greatest factual contribution, especially to Národní památkový ústav that will therefore obtain a complex overview on one of its collections, but also to specialized public, for whom the composition of the catalogue means the possibility of the research use.

The Just One Look Method : The Act of Inward Looking and the Self-Directed Attention Exercise

The aim of this study was to examine personal experiences of an alternative method for improving mental health and well-being called The Just One Look Method (JOLM). Data were collected and analyzed by qualitative content analysis of eight semi-structured interviews of JOLM users resulting in three main themes: The Act of Inward Looking (AIL), The Self-Directed Attention Exercise (SDA) and Consequences of JOLM. The main results where that AIL may offer an additional aspect and definition of the concept of self, a kind of subjective sense of self with possible implications for the field of consciousness science. And that looking at that sense of self may influence attention with possible positive consequences for mental health and well-being. JOLM was contrasted theoretically with traditional attention-based methods for achieving better mental health with a particular emphasis on Buddhist meditation. Further research was suggested to investigate more causal relationships between AIL and SDA and between JOLM and mental health.

DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF A NOVEL HIGH SPEED SHAPE-TRANSITIONED WAVERIDER INTAKE

<p>Air intakes are a fundamental part of all high speed airbreathing propulsion concepts. The main purpose of an intake is to capture and compress freestream air for the engine. At hypersonic speeds, the intake’s surface and shock structure effectively slow the airflow through ram-air compression. In supersonic-combustion ramjets, the captured airflow remains supersonic and generates complicated shock structures. The design of these systems require careful evaluation of proposed operating conditions and relevant aerodynamic phenomena. The physics of these systems, such as the intake’s operability range, mass capture efficiency, back-pressure resiliency, and intake unstart margins are all open areas of research. </p> <p><br></p> <p>A high speed intake, dubbed the Indiana Intake Testbed, was developed for experimentation within the Boeing-AFOSR Mach 6 Quiet Tunnel at Purdue University. This inward-turning, mixed compression intake was developed from osculating axisymmetric theory and uses a streamtracing routine to create a shape-transitioned geometry. To account for boundary layer growth, a viscous correction was implemented on the intake’s compression surfaces. This comprehensive independent design code was pursued to generate an unrestricted geometry that satisfies academic inquiry into fluid dynamic interactions relevant to intakes. Additionally, the design code contains built-in analysis tools that are compared against CFD calculations and experimental data. </p> <p><br></p> <p>Two blockage models were constructed and outfitted with Kulite pressure transducers to detect possible intake start and unstart effects. Due to an error in the design code, the preliminary blockage models’ lower surfaces were oversized. The two intake models were tested over a freestream Reynolds number sweep, under noisy and quiet flow, at one non-zero angle of attack, and at a singular back-pressure condition. Back-pressure effects acted to unstart the intake and provide a comparison between forced-unstart and started states. The experimental campaign cataloged both tunnel starting and inlet starting conditions, which informed the design of the finalized model. The finalized model is presented herein. Future experiments to study isolator shock-trains, shock-wave boundary layer interactions, and possible instances of boundary layer transition on the intake’s compression surface are planned. </p>
