Cultural habits : The travel writing of Isabella Bird, Max Dauthendey and Ai Wu, 1850-1930

Ng, Maria Noelle 11 1900 (has links)
Edward Said’s Orientalism (1978) has generally been recognized as an influential study of western literary perceptions of the East, but numerous critics have also challenged his geographical parameters as too narrow and his conceptual framework as insufficiently complex. This thesis further expands the study of Orientalism (1) by focussing on a colonized area generally overlooked in this context, namely Southeast Asia; (2) by including a writer of German background, a nationality frequently omitted in the discussion of colonial history in general and of Orientalism in particular; and (3) perhaps most importantly, by juxtaposing the views of a Chinese author with those of western writers. This thesis is the critical study of three authors about their travels in Southeast Asia: Isabella Bird (1831-1904), Max Dauthendey (1867-1918) and Ai Wu (1904-1992). Since postcolonial criticism does not generally concern itself with the cultural habits which are formed in a traveller’s native society prior to his or her departure, this approach alone does not provide the tools for the differentiated kind of investigation I wish to conduct. I therefore draw on the cultural criticism of Pierre Bourdieu (1972, 1979, 1993), Johannes Fabian (1983, 1991), and Walter Benjamin (1969, 1974, 1985), to focus on a decisive moment in each traveller’s background, which may be said to have shaped his or her perception of other cultures. In Bird’s case, this event was the 1851 Exhibition which encapsulated the Victorian ideals of industrial progress, imperial expansion, and Christian philanthropy. By contrast, Dauthendey’s responses were shaped by the Art Nouveau sensibilities he bad acquired in the German, French, and Scandinavian bohème. Finally, Al Wu derived his outlook from the May Fourth Movement, a brief period when western ideas were welcomed into Chinese social and literary history. Said’s Orietalism posits the homogeneous cultural entity of an imperial West in contradistinction to a victimized East. This thesis does not reverse these categories, but it does provide the space for an equal discussion of Chinese and western writings within a differentiated historical context. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

Class, Authority, and the Querelle des Femmes: A Women's Community of Resistance in Early Modern Europe

Lawrence, Dana Eatman 2009 August 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examines the poetry of Isabella Whitney, a maidservant in London, Veronica Franco, a Venetian courtesan, Marie de Romieu, a baker's daughter in rural France, and Aemilia Lanyer, the daughter and wife of Italian immigrant musicians in London, all of whom attempted to create communities of learned and literary women within their texts. In their works, all four women boldly reject the misogyny prevalent in early modern culture; however, they do so without being able to withdraw from the culture that contributed to such rhetoric, thereby writing from the periphery. In her essay, "Choosing the Margin as a Space of Radical Openness," bell hooks identifies this position on the edge as one of opportunity. She argues that the very presence of the Other "within the culture of domination" is in itself a threat. As such, existing on the margins of that culture is unsafe and requires a "community of resistance" to turn that space into "a site of radical possibility." I argue that these four writers, marginalized by virtue of their sex as well as by their social positions, were united in a community of resistance through their participation in the querelle des femmes, a centuries-long debate about women's place in society. Each recognizes class, gender, and geographical hierarchies as social constructions and presents her own imagined resistant community of women within her work--each authorizing her own voice as they collectively rewrite women's history. As an international community of resistance, the works of these women may be seen as prefiguring contemporary debates about gender, community, and globalization. By examining the early modern querelle des femmes through the lens of postmodern feminism, this dissertation shows that, despite all of the historical models that position early modern European women as physically, politically, historically, and legally subordinate within their respective cultures, there existed a women's community of resisstance that not only refused to accept this inferior status but also recognized education and cooperation as a source of power.

From page to stage: Isabella Stewart Gardner's photograph albums and the development of her museum, 1874-1924

Riley, Casey K. 08 April 2016 (has links)
This dissertation traces the arc of Isabella Stewart Gardner's professional development through her photographic and archival practices in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While Gardner's museum in Boston is well known, she destroyed evidence pertinent to her curatorial agenda. To recover these methods, this project surveys Gardner's involvement with photography through two of her earliest travel albums, all fifteen of her illustrated guest books, and five albums of the evolving galleries in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. The process of photographic album making supported strategies of research, collection, installation, and preservation that Gardner would use as a patron and institutional leader. Gardner's albums illuminate her actions not only as a collector of travel photography by Antonio Beato, Francis Frith, Pascal Sebah, and others, but also as a snapshot photographer and a commissioner of professional architectural photography in Boston. Her multivalent photographic practices reveal the ways in which she used albums and photography to realize her professional ambitions. Collecting, creating, arranging, and displaying photographs were not sentimental pastimes for Gardner, but processes intrinsic to the formation of her identity as a cosmopolitan innovator and civic leader. The first chapter analyzes the handwritten narrative, watercolor paintings, and commercial photography of Egyptian antiquities in Gardner's 1874-1875 "Egypt Diary" to discover the earliest origins for her actions as a collector. The second chapter analyzes the photographic assemblages of Gothic architecture in Gardner's 1879 travel albums of England to show how that journey influenced her design of the galleries and garden at Fenway Court. The third chapter reads Gardner's guest books as socially networked photographic objects to demonstrate their role in cultivating institutional supporters and shaping the cultural mission of her museum. The fourth chapter establishes the importance of reproductive technologies in the assembling of Gardner's collection of art and the pivotal role of architectural photography in the preservation of her civic bequest. The case studies within this dissertation form a comprehensive examination of Gardner's photographic engagements and the importance of photography in the formation and preservation of her institutional legacy. / 2023-12-31T00:00:00Z

Queen Isabella and the Spanish Inquisition: 1478-1505

Nykanen, Lori 01 December 2014 (has links)
Queen Isabella (1451-1505) daughter of King John II of Castile and Queen Isabella of Portugal has been accredited for some of the most famous accomplishments of medieval Spain. Through her succession to the Castilian throne in 1479 Isabella created a secular government, which enabled her to restore the monarch's power and wealth, and gave her a wide reaching authority over her kingdom. The Queen, being a pious Catholic, reestablished Catholicism as the official religion of Castile and brought forward a tribunal to help her reinforce her desires for sincere Christian piousness and to bring retribution to those who were heretical and insincere in their new conversions to the Catholic faith. This Spanish tribunal was established in 1478, blessed by Pope Sixtus IV, and would eventually become infamously known as the Black Legend or the Spanish Inquisition. Through the disguise of a religious tribunal the Queen's Inquisition performed a duel purpose; acting as a secret police with long reaching tentacles that created as much fear and terror to the kingdom as its tribunal Auto de Fe's. The social-religious context of Castilian life changed drastically underneath Isabella's Inquisition, whose direct influence caused the Jewish population to faltered and be ultimately expelled in 1492. Queen Isabella's ambitions, both secular and religious, brought the abrupt ending of seven hundred years of religious blending known as the Convivencia throughout her kingdom and created a large newly converted Catholic community named the Conversos that would ultimately challenge the old Christian communities and the Spanish Inquisition for the next three centuries to maintain their rightful place in Castilian society.

MOMSHAMING : En kvalitativ kritisk diskursanalys om hur nätkritik mot kvinnor utspelar sig på Isabella Löwengrips blogg. / Momshaming : A qualitative critical discourseanalysis of how cyberhate against women shows on Isabella Löwengrips blog.

Blomberg, Fanny, Jerrhage, Linn January 2018 (has links)
For mothers to share their family life on social media has become a trend in the Swedish society. Isabella Löwengrip is one mother who does this. Isabella is a well known person in Sweden and has over 1,5 million followers on her blog. Isabella blogs about her everyday life and how it’s to live alone with two kids. A recurring pattern on the comments posted to Isabella’s blog are comments that criticize her way of taking care of her kids. This type of criticism is called ”momshaming”.   This qualitative study analyzes how momshaming takes place on Isabella Löwengrip’s blog. The theoretical framework of the study is CDA and norms theory from a feminist perspective. The data analyzed are the comments posted to five selected posts from Isabella’s blog and we analyze them using the method CDA and seven analytical tools. The analytical tools helped us see what the readers reacted on and how momshaming are showed in comments.   The study identifies four different themes in the momshaming comments; irony, time, ”they are just kids” and comparative with himself (the ones posting the comments). The study shows that momshaming takes place when the reader thinks that Isabella is going against the norm for a ”good” mother. Momshaming shows in the blog as negative comments about how Isabella raises her children. The most common theme is that Isabella doesn't spend much time with her kids and that she doesn’t treat them like they are kids.

The present research proposes a look over the complex relations between media and justice, marked, mainly by different temporalities. And it is in crimes with great repercussion with its vast media coverage that it is possible to have a better view of the hindrance which involves “media and justice”. For this reason, the focus of this research are the reports from the maganizes Época, Isto É and Veja which broach the “case Isabella” during the four following weeks of April 2008. This paper investigates how the discourse of such magazines was organized both to receive the juristic system participation through the sources which represent it, and to meet the deadlines of their journalistic productions, when they reported the case Isabella. Based on the methodological approach of the Content Analysis, we analyzed the frequency and the participation of the sources which represent the juristic field in the case Isabella. Moreover, we identified the circumstances in which the weeklies turned to other sources of information in order to deal with the conflict of temporality and the way these sources filled in information gaps produced by the silence of justice. Among our conclusions, it is noticeable that Época magazine searched for official sources that made it be neutral and careful, and also often suggest what should be done in the investigation process. Isto É turned to official sources to gather not only initial but also final information over the investigation process which could assure the guilt of the ones involved in the crime. Veja behaved as if it had all the information over the investigation process and did not have the need to search for them in the discourse of legal agents.
