Exploring the Motives, Perceptions and Constructed Identities of the Facilitators for One Regional Council of a Positive Youth Development Program: Girls on the Run

The purpose of this study is to explore the coaches' perceptions, motives and constructed identities by participating in a regional physical activity-based positive youth development program. There is growing evidence that suggests the success of positive youth development (PYD) programs depend on the environment that is created by caring adult mentors. These coaches are the delivery vehicles for these programs and play an essential role in the development of participating youth. As a result, the characteristics these coaches possess are critical to the success of the PYD implementation. Based on the application of anthropological methods and theory, this study seeks to create a profile of the coaches and propose strategies for recruitment and retention for a regional council of Girls on the Run. The main findings from this study indicate that the coaches' network is strong within this community and contributes the success of the program and its sustainability. These women are driven by altruistic factors to become involved in this program and most were previous volunteers in some capacity (n=12). However, there seems to be an even distribution along the self-determination continuum that motivates them to participate. Intrinsic motivation (n=5), intrinsic motivation driven by external factors (n=5), and extrinsic motivation (n=3). Additionally, these findings can be translated into recommendations for other councils.

The G305 star forming complex : a panoramic view of the environment and star formation

This thesis presents molecular line and radio continuum observations of the giant molecular cloud (GMC) complex known as G305. The energy input from high-mass stars in the form of powerful winds and ionising radiation is one of the primary feedback mechanisms in GMCs. This feedback is thought to play a dual role both dispersing and destroying the natal environment but also sweeping up and compressing molecular gas and potentially triggering new episodes of star formation. Despite their importance to the evolution of GMCs and galaxies as a whole, the physical processes behind the formation and evolution of high-mass stars remains poorly understood. We therefore set out to obtain wide-field observations of the ionised and molecular environment to study the impact of high-mass stars on the evolution of G305. Observations conducted with the Mopra telescope of the molecular gas traced by NH3 in the (1,1), (2,2) and (3,3) transition and CO (12CO, 13CO and C18O J = 1–0) reveals the reservoir for future star formation in G305 and allows the physical properties and kinematics of the region to be studied. We identify 15 large molecular clouds and 57 smaller molecular clumps towards G305. The physical properties of the molecular gas are consistent with G305 being amongst the most massive a vigorous star forming regions in the Galaxy. We find a total molecular gas mass of 2:5–6:5 105M indicating that there is a large reservoir for future star formation. By considering virial equilibrium within the molecular clumps we discover that only 14% of the molecular clumps in G305 are gravitationally unstable, however these clumps contain > 30% of the molecular mass in G305 suggesting there is scope for considerable future star formation. To study the ionised environment towards G305 we have obtained some of the largest and most detailed wide-area mosaics with the Australia Telescope Compact Array to date. These radio continuum observations were performed simultaneously at 5.5 and 8.8 GHz and by applying two imaging techniques we are able to resolve HII regions from the ultra-compact to classical evolutionary phase. This has allowed high-mass star formation within G305 to be traced over the extent and lifetime of the complex. We discover that more than half of the observable total ionising flux in G305 is associated with embedded high-mass star formation around the periphery of a central cavity that has been driven into the molecular gas by a cluster of optically visible massive stars. By considering the contribution of embedded and visible massive stars to the observed radio continuum we suggest that more than 45 massive stars exist within G305. Combination of these two studies and recent and ongoing star formation provides the most in depth view of G305 to date and allows the star formation history and impact of high-mass stars to be investigated. We find compelling morphological evidence that suggests triggering is responsible for at least some of the observed high-mass star formation and construct a star formation history for the region.

An Investigation of Neutral Hydrogen in Three Edge-on Spiral Galaxies

We present the results of a new and high sensitivity study of the neutral hydrogen (HI) gas in three early type edge-on spiral galaxies, NGC 4157, NGC 3600 and NGC 2683. All three galaxies reveal HI disks that extend nearly or more than twice the length of the optical disk, which ubiquitously reveal asymmetries and warps. We model each galaxy using a three-dimensional kinematic model to derive the empirical parameters of the density distribution functions and rotation curves. A Gaussian function is unanimously found to best represent the density distribution in the plane of the galaxies. We also find that there is in fact a thick HI disk extending into the halo of two of three of these galaxies with scale heights on kpc. scales. This gas suggests the existence of two separate widespread components: a thin, high intensity disk component, normally rotating, and a vast, low intensity halo component, rotating at slower velocities with respect to the disk. This vertical velocity gradient is perhaps our most significant finding in addition to the discovery of the two new HI halos. We also find an unevenly distributed small-scale component of the gas in the form of shell-like and filamentary structures that extend from the disk into the halo. In all three systems we find unique kinematic and structural peculiarities including an HI disk extending four times the optical disk, a declining rotation curve, a companion, expanding bubbles, disk warps, etc. Several physical parameters are derived such as neutral hydrogen and dynamic masses, systemic velocities, HI radii, HI halo masses, etc. All of our findings are investigated and discussed in depth for each of the three galaxies. / Thesis (Master, Physics, Engineering Physics and Astronomy) -- Queen's University, 2009-09-03 19:47:31.786

Etude d'un réseau de capteurs environnementaux en bande ISM

Cette thèse présente l'étude d'un réseau de capteurs pour la surveillance en temps réel de la qualité des eaux souterraines. L'objectif est de réussir à communiquer dans la bande de fréquences libre à 433MHz sur plusieurs dizaines de kilomètres. Le problème majeur des bandes libres est la présence de transmissions parasites (brouilleurs). Nous avons donc, en premier lieu, mis en évidence de la présence de ces brouilleurs et étudier leur impact sur les communications. Après analyse, il s'avère que les brouilleurs sont très nombreux et puissants mais que leur répartition dans la bande est inégale. Une étude spectrale de la bande semble nécessaire, avant la mise en place du réseau, afin de transmettre dans les canaux les moins pollués. Des communications nocturnes sont également à privilégier car les brouilleurs sont moins nombreux la nuit. Nous présentons ensuite une architecture réseau, adaptée au cahier des charges et à cette bande de fréquences. Nous avons également testé un composant RF dédié aux transmissions en bande ISM. Les résultats montrent que les performances de ce composant sont faibles pour des communications longues distances en présence de brouilleurs. Un récepteur radiofréquence simple ne permet donc pas de réaliser des communications fiables dans ces conditions. Le prototype complet du réseau, développé durant ces travaux, est ensuite décrit. Pour finir, nous proposons un nouveau concept de récepteur, utilisant un réseau d'antennes phasé et un détecteur cyclostationnaire, pour pallier au problème des brouilleurs. Le but est de stocker les signaux reçus pour les traiter en temps différé à l'aide d'algorithmes de filtrage spatial. Des simulations montrent l'efficacité de ce concept.

Adapting to the Changes Enforced by EU’s Network Codes for Electricity : The Consequences for an Electricity Company from a Distribution System Operator’s Perspective

To reach EU’s climate and energy target an integrated electricity market is considered to be required (Klessmann, et al., 2011; Boie, et al., 2014; Becker, et al., 2013). As a result the European Commission decided to form a set of rules, named the Network Codes, to create a single European market (ENTSO-E, 2013b). The Network Codes will affect Distribution- and Transmission System Operators, grid users and production units as well as all the other actors on the electricity market (Eurelectric, n.d.a). Concerns regarding what the Network Codes’ actual consequences are have been expressed within the line of business (Swedish Energy, 2013a). Therefore the purpose of this master’s thesis was to determine and furthermore illustrate the consequences the Network Codes will have, in current version, for a Swedish non-transmission system connected electricity company and determine what actions need to be taken. The purpose has been addressed by conducting interviews, document studies and by utilizing a change management model, the Intervention Strategy Model, introduced by Paton & McCalman (2000). The structured approach that is the nature of the model was used when determining the consequences the Network Codes enforce and what actions a non-transmission system connected electricity company has to take to cope with them. To further facilitate the determination of these actions this study was conducted on a non-transmission system connected electricity company, in this thesis named Electricity Company A. The investigation of the concerns expressed within the line of business illustrated that the concerns were diverse but a majority of them might be incorporated into either of the following groups, simulation models, demand side aggregator and information handling. Out of these groups information handling was by far the area of greatest concern with issues primarily connected to the Distribution System Operator. Consequently this thesis focused on the Distribution System Operator’s perspective. The analysis of the area of greatest concern, presented in two flow charts, clearly showed the increased amount of communication enforced by the Network Codes. This increased information handling results in numerous possible organisational consequences for the Distribution System Operator, for example might new systems be required and some existing systems be used with or without adaption. Furthermore, the extra workload could possibly be handled by the existing personnel, in some cases after complementary education, but it might also require new personnel. Finally the Network Codes open up for the possibility for the Distribution System Operator to define certain details which may be conducted individually or in cooperation with other Distribution System Operators. Which of these possible consequences that will affect a specific company is, however, dependent on its preconditions. The study on Electricity Company A reveals that the numerous actions required to handle the new communication were not as significant as the line of business might have feared. For Electricity Company A, primarily a new system is needed to handle the real-time values and some of the existing systems need to be updated. Additionally the combined extra work load might require extra personnel for Electricity Company A even though the individual work assignments are fairly small. The actions required should be fairly similar for companies of approximately equal size but might be more extensive for smaller non-transmission system connected electricity companies. All companies need, however, to conduct an individual analysis to determine which specific actions are required for them. The conclusions of this thesis aspired, and partly succeeded, to be generalizable on a European level. One example of this is the usage of the Intervention Strategy Model which proved applicable for determining which specific actions are required for all European electricity companies. Furthermore the concerns presented and the possible consequences of the increased information handling found, are generalizable but not complete for all European electricity companies. This thesis focused on one part of the complex Network Codes’ consequences and consequently further research is needed to fully understand the consequences for the electricity business in total.

The interstellar medium at high redshift: the sub-DLA at z=2.06 towards the quasar J2123−0050

DLAs are the primary reservoirs of neutral gas available for star formation at high redshift. However, DLAs are metal poor and lack molecular gas. In this thesis, I present a study of an extraordinary case of a z=2.06 sub-DLA towards the quasar J2123−0050, which is characterized by a metallicity that approaches solar, and a high H2 molecular fraction (log f(H2) = −2.54). Furthermore, this SDLA harbors HD molecules, only the third such detection at high redshift, and with the highest (HD/2H2) fraction of -2.75. To understand these observations, I study the effects of dust depletion and photoionization on the interpretation of raw abundance measurements. I find that the magnitude of photoionization and dust depletion effects has a profound impact on the interpretation of this SDLA. The calculated corrections lower the elemental and molecular abundances suggesting that the ISM in the SDLA towards J2123−0050 exhibits properties similar to the gas in the local sightlines.

Star Formation in the Perseus Molecular Cloud: A Detailed Look at Star-Forming Clumps with Herschel

This dissertation presents new Herschel observations at 70 micron, 160 micron, 250 micron, 350 micron, and 500 micron of the Perseus molecular cloud from the Herschel Gould Belt Survey. The Perseus molecular cloud is a nearby star-forming region consisting of seven main star-forming clumps. The Herschel observations are used to characterize and contrast the properties of these clumps, and to study their embedded core populations. First, we probed the exceptionally young clump, B1-E. Using complementary molecular line data, we demonstrate that B1-E is likely fragmenting into a first generation of dense cores in relative isolation. Such a core formation region has never been observed before. Second, we use complementary long wavelength observations at 850 micron to study the dust properties in the larger, more active B1 clump. We find that Herschel data alone cannot constrain well the dust properties of cold dust emission and that long wavelength observations are needed. Additionally, we find evidence of dust grain growth towards the dense cores in B1, where the dust emissivity index, beta, varies from the often assumed value of beta = 2. In the absence of long wavelength observations, however, assuming beta = 2 is preferable over measuring beta with the Herschel-only bands. Finally, we use the source extraction code, getsources, to identify the core populations within each clump from the Herschel data. In addition, we use complementary archival infrared observations to study their populations of young stellar objects (YSOs). We find that the more massive clumps have an excess of older stage YSOs, suggesting that these regions contracted first. Starless cores are typically associated with peaks in the column density, where those found towards regions of higher column density also have higher average densities and colder temperatures. Starless cores associated with a strong, local interstellar radiation field, however, have higher temperatures. We find that the clumps with the most prominent high column density tails also had the highest fractions of early-stage YSOs. This relation suggests that the quantity of high column density material corresponds to recent star formation activity. / Graduate / 0606

The Intricate Structure of HH 508, the Brightest Microjet in the Orion Nebula

We present Magellan adaptive optics Ha imaging of HH 508, which has the highest surface brightness among protostellar jets in the Orion Nebula. We find that HH 508 actually has a shorter component to the west, and a longer and knotty component to the east. The east component has a kink at 0.'' 3 from the jet-driving star theta(1) Ori B-2, so it may have been deflected by the wind/radiation from the nearby theta(1) Ori B1B5. The origin of both components is unclear, but if each of them is a separate jet, then theta(1) Ori B-2 may be a tight binary. Alternatively, HH 508 may be a slow-moving outflow, and each component represents an illuminated cavity wall. The ionization front surrounding theta(1) Ori B2B3 does not directly face theta(1) Ori B1B5, suggesting that the EUV radiation from theta(1) Ori C plays a dominant role in affecting the morphology of proplyds even in the vicinity of theta(1) Ori B1B5. Finally, we report an Ha blob that might be ejected by the binary proplyd LV 1.

Deep CO(1–0) Observations of z = 1.62 Cluster Galaxies with Substantial Molecular Gas Reservoirs and Normal Star Formation Efficiencies

We present an extremely deep CO(1-0) observation of a confirmed z = 1.62 galaxy cluster. We detect two spectroscopically confirmed cluster members in CO(1-0) with signal-to-noise ratio >5. Both galaxies have log (M-star/M-circle dot) > 11 and are gas rich, with M-mol/(M-star + M-mol) similar to 0.17-0.45. One of these galaxies lies on the star formation rate (SFR)-M-star sequence, while the other lies an order of magnitude below. We compare the cluster galaxies to other SFR-selected galaxies with CO measurements and find that they have CO luminosities consistent with expectations given their infrared luminosities. We also find that they have gas fractions and star formation efficiencies (SFE) comparable to what is expected from published field galaxy scaling relations. The galaxies are compact in their stellar light distribution, at the extreme end for all high-redshift star-forming galaxies. However, their SFE is consistent with other field galaxies at comparable compactness. This is similar to two other sources selected in a blind CO survey of the HDF-N. Despite living in a highly quenched protocluster core, the molecular gas properties of these two galaxies, one of which may be in the process of quenching, appear entirely consistent with field scaling relations between the molecular gas content, stellar mass, star formation rate, and redshift. We speculate that these cluster galaxies cannot have any further substantive gas accretion if they are to become members of the dominant passive population in z < 1 clusters.

Spatially Resolved Dust, Gas, and Star Formation in the Dwarf Magellanic Irregular NGC 4449

We investigate the relation between gas and star formation in subgalactic regions, similar to 360. pc to similar to 1.5. kpc in size, within the nearby starburst dwarf NGC 4449, in order to separate the underlying relation from the effects of sampling at varying spatial scales. Dust and gas mass surface densities are derived by combining new observations at 1.1. mm, obtained with the AzTEC instrument on the Large Millimeter Telescope, with archival infrared images in the range 8-500 mu m from the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Herschel Space Observatory. We extend the dynamic range of our millimeter (and dust) maps at the faint end, using a correlation between the far-infrared/millimeter colors F(70)/F(1100) (and F(160)/F(1100)) and the mid-infrared color F(8)/F(24) that we establish for the first time for this and other galaxies. Supplementing our data with maps of the extinction-corrected star formation rate (SFR) surface density, we measure both the SFR-molecular gas and the SFR-total. gas relations in NGC 4449. We find that the SFR-molecular. gas relation is described by a power law with an exponent that decreases from similar to 1.5 to similar to 1.2 for increasing region size, while the exponent of the SFR-total. gas relation remains constant with a value of similar to 1.5 independent of region size. We attribute the molecular law behavior to the increasingly better sampling of the molecular cloud mass function at larger region sizes; conversely, the total gas law behavior likely results from the balance between the atomic and molecular gas phases achieved in regions of active star formation. Our results indicate a nonlinear relation between SFR and gas surface density in NGC 4449, similar to what is observed for galaxy samples.
