Neste estudo, meu objetivo é investigar a influência da idéia de kairós na philosophía de Isócrates. Defendo que, a partir da noção de kairós, considerada tanto como oportunidade quanto como a particularidade de uma circunstância, Isócrates propõe uma philosophía que valoriza as opiniões (dóxai) em detrimento de um conhecimento seguro (epistḗmē), inalcançável para a natureza humana. Por fim, busco traçar relações entre a philosophía isocrática e questões da historiografia contemporânea, assim como refletir sobre a posição de Isócrates dentro da nossa tradição filosófica. / In this study I aim to research the influence of the idea of kairós in Isocrates’ philosophía. I argue that, considering the notion of kairós both as an opportunity and particularity of a circumstance, Isocrates proposes a philosophía that values the opinions (dóxai) instead of a secure knowledge (epistḗmē), unreachable to human nature. Finally, I seek to elaborate relations between the isocratic philosophía and issues of contemporary historiography, as well as meditate about Isocrates’ setting within our philosophical tradition.

O presente texto trata do Panatenaico, de autoria do ateniense Isócrates. O discurso, inicialmente apresentado como um elogio de Atenas e uma censura a Esparta, destaca-se dentro da obra isocrática por conter, em seu final, um diálogo entre Isócrates e um de seus alunos. Depois de considerar as principais linhas interpretativas, procede-se a um exame e interpretação dessa seção. No próximo capítulo, abordam-se as declarações autobiográficas de Isócrates, usando-se para tanto da teoria retórica contemporânea quanto dos escritos isocráticos, mostrando seu caráter tópico. O objetivo é mostrar como Isócrates constrói uma imagem de si para ganhar a confiança de seu público. No final deste trabalho, apresentamos uma tradução em protuguês do Panatenaico. / The subject of this text is the Panathenaicus, a work by the Athenian Isocrates. The speech at first presents itself as en eulogy of Athens and a reproach of Sparta. Great part of the interest in the text lies on the final section, where we find a dialogue between Isocrates and one of his ancient students. After reviewing the major interpretative lines, we proceed to an analysis and interpretation of the section. In the next chapter, the autobiographical statements of Isocrates in its works are analysed according the contemporary rhetorical theory and the author\'s own writings. Our aim in this section is to show that Isocrates\' self-description is a rhetorical proceeding intended to win over the readers. Finally, at the end of this work, it is presented a translation of the Panathenaicus.

Rhetoric of the academy : a pragmatist approach to reexamining individual experience in education

Higher education is at a crossroads. In the U.S. especially, the question of what role education should play in greater society continues to come up. Should education be about fundamentally developing the predispositions or skills of an individual so that he or she can be a more effective citizen later in life? Or should education merely function as a box to check off, a kind of rite of passage that, regardless of quality or content, is required of an individual on the way to becoming part of some “real world?” These issues are quickly moving to the forefront for students and scholars alike; no longer relegated behind closed doors at faculty meetings, these issues are coming to define the very institutions that question them. It is the goal of this thesis, then, to address these shifting goals for, and horizons of, education through a rhetorical lens. From this perspective, education functions as the text under consideration. Rhetoric as it is understood for the majority of this project can be seen in the social interactions that take place, typically between the individual student and his or her educational environment. The core theme that runs throughout this thesis is that learning is not something that solely takes place through formal education, nor is it about acquiring mere common sense; rather, it is a natural extension of human curiosity to wonder about and explore the world of which we are all a part. It is the responsibility of schools and universities alike to facilitate students in developing who they are as a part of this bigger picture. To this end, I introduce the term “inhabited learning.” Inhabited learning elaborates on why one’s learning experience in formal education is still so important: In an age of information we all need some way of making sense of the myriad facts and figures we encounter in our everyday lives, with the hope of being able to make better sense of ourselves in the process. / text

Rebuilding the Catholic Brand in America: An Isocratean Perspective

This dissertation attempts to rebuild the American Catholic brand fractured by the priests' sexual abuse scandals, using Isocrates' theory of self-defense and self-representation as found in his Antidosis. The work conceptualizes the Catholic Church as a brand because it is a religious organization with an army of followers, is well-known, and is an indisputable leader in the provision of education, healthcare, and social welfare, thereby playing an important role in the socio-cultural consciousness of many Americans. Built over centuries of service to its members and the country, the Catholic brand from the 1960s to the dawn of the twenty-first century had enjoyed high moral authority as a religious organization that promoted the dignity of the human person and acted as an ethically responsible corporate citizen in American society. However, such moral authority crumbled following the 2002 Boston Globe revelations that for decades the Church's hierarchy in the Archdiocese of Boston had sexually preyed on innocent children and vulnerable members. The result has been a crisis of faith and trust, lasting for over a decade in spite of the Church's efforts to create a safe environment for its children and vulnerable members and to hold predator priests accountable.<br> This dissertation holds the view that, for the Church in America to rebuild its brand and thereby restore its fractured image and reputation, it must adopt a rebranding model based on Isocrates' theory of self-defense and self-representation/characterization. Consistent with the Isocratean rebranding model, the American Catholic Church must embrace its core identity as a model institutional citizen that promotes the dignity of the human person, differentiate and dissociate itself from predator priests and their episcopal supporters, establish goodwill toward stakeholders by setting up monuments to memorialize abuse victims, organizing annual events for victims to tell their stories, holding abusive clergy and irresponsible bishops accountable, allowing the lay faithful to play an active role in priestly formation, being more transparent in its handling of sexual abuse cases, and requiring seminarians and priests to undergo frequent sexual assault and sexual harassment training. Este trabalho propõe a tradução do discurso Panegírico, de autoria do ateniense Isócrates. A versão vem acompanhada de notas, que visam a fornecer um breve comentário das passagens mais importantes do texto. Um estudo introdutório, cujo primeiro capítulo pretende discutir algumas questões propostas pelo texto, tratando de sua composição, do tratamento dos fatos históricos e um breve relato das principais interpretações modernas do Panegírico. O capítulo seguinte aborda o problema dos bárbaros no Panegírico e como o retrato de Isócrates dos povos não gregos visa a reforçar as propostas feitas pelo autor em seu texto. Na parte final do estudo, examina-se a relação desse texto com obras precedentes tratando das mesmas questões que o Panegírico. / This work proposes to translate the Panegyricus, a speech by the Athenian Isocrates. Endnotes have been added, in order to comment the most important passages in the text. In addition, an introductory study is included to clarify the some points of the text, such as the problems posed by the composition of the text, its treatment of the historical facts and a brief review of the main modern interpretations of the Panegyricus. The next chapter discusses the role which the barbarians play in the Panegyricus and how Isocrates portrait of the non-Greek peoples serves the propositions advanced by the author in his text. The final part of the study examines the relation of the Panegyricus with texts treating the same questions.
