Memorias olvidadas. Joel Peter Witkin.

Franceschini F., Carla January 2007 (has links)

On Rearing an Ugly Head: Joel-Peter Witkin and the Mysticism of the “Ugly Aesthetic”

Ballen, Amanda 23 December 2020 (has links)
The contemporary photographer, Joel-Peter Witkin, has described his remaking of some of the most iconic paintings in the history of art as a “divine revolt”. However, there are no attempts to unravel the meaning of this project nor to analyse the visual changes that Witkin has made. This thesis argues that Witkin's re-creations serve to subvert the negation or diminishment of ugliness in art history's depictions of the mystical, and to present the experience of ugliness as alternatively inherently Godly. Through engaging in the problems in philosophical aesthetics, it contrasts the notions “aesthetically ugly” (a quality that cannot be objectively identified and studied because it ascribes aesthetic non-worth) with the “ugly aesthetic”, which refers to the “perceptive-felt” experience of an object. By integrating descriptions of this experience of the ugly aesthetic with those of the early development stage of the “psychoanalytic pre-symbolic”, it provides heuristics with which to identify perceptual identifiers ugly objects, ugly worlds and the expression of ugly feelings in mystical invocations of paintings of three chosen art historical periods and Witkin's recreations. In his reconstructing of the heavenly realms given Renaissance paintings of Leda and the Swan (1510-1515) and The Birth of Venus (1485), Witkin makes a “pre-symbolic” space with ugly objects to present a contrary vision of an ugly dwelling place for God. In amending the Catholic Baroque's Little Fur (1638) and the Protestant Baroque's Still Life of Game, Fish, Fruit and Kitchen Utensils (1646), the artist replaces mystical feelings that imbue scenes of ugly objects with an expression of ugly feelings themselves, thereby guiding the viewer into a full immersion into these objects the real site of Godly experience instead. This theoretical formulation and its application to the works at hand, evidence that Witkin's work points to the mystical power of the ugly aesthetic to unleash a personal and collective memory of Godly reality as ontologically formless and mysterious, and thereby makes a case for ugliness' value.

Widz, Fredrik January 2021 (has links)
This study intends to investigate the use of Joel Greenblatts investing strategy “Magic Formula” on the Swedish stock market for the 10-year period of last of March 2009 to last of March 2019-- a period characterized as a raging bull-market, mainly driven forward by historically low interest rates. This is done by the utilization of back testing, later comparing the returns with a benchmark(OMXSGI) as well as determining if the return can be aptly explained by the asset pricing models CAPM and Fama-French 3 factor with the use of regression analysis. The author found that after transactions cost the two portfolios created according to Magic Formula principles returned 22.63% and 22.21% CAGR which beat the benchmark 15.21% CAGR handily. The alpha of both created portfolios however was shown to be statistical insignificant on the 0.05 significance level when controlling for risk, size and value factors. Further studies are hence recommended—especially on markets which presumably are less efficient and/or over longer period of times with macroeconomic conditions that might reward value more strongly since Magic Formula seems to be capable of being a reasonable screening tool for these types of stocks.

Effects of Cloud-Induced Photovoltaic Power Transients on Power System Protection

Nelson, Joel A 01 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
As the world strives towards finding alternative sources of power generation, photovoltaic generation has become an increasingly prevalent alternative energy source on power systems world-wide. This paper studies the effects that incorporating photovoltaic generation has on the existing power systems and their power system protection schemes. Along with the addition of this emerging alternative energy source comes the volatility of PV power generation as cloud-cover produces erratic variations in solar irradiance and PV power production. Such variations in PV power may lead to unfavorable operating conditions and power system failures. The issues addressed in this paper include a study of inverter harmonic levels for variations in DC voltage and power, and a study of power system protection failures caused by cloud-induced PV power variations. Such issues are addressed so as to provide a better understanding of the effects that cloud-induced PV power generation variability has on power systems and its protection schemes.

A Defense of Pure Restitution

Hirmiz, Rand January 2018 (has links)
In this thesis I argue that legal punishment is far from perfect, and that the most common defenses used to justify it prove to be unsuccessful when examined closely. I propose that if there exists an alternative, non-punitive, practice capable of achieving the same benefits, then that practice should be preferred over punishment. I then proceed to introduce one such alternative, the theory of pure restitution, and resolve some problems raised by its critics. I ultimately demonstrate not only that pure restitution is capable of achieving the same benefits as punishment, but that it is capable of achieving even further benefits. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)
