The goal of this MA thesis is to point out the legitimacy and specificity of voice-over narration as an expressive device in film. Although it is generally underestimated a priori, voice-over has peculiar qualities which, when put to good use, contribute to establish the intended tone of the film. I document the distinctiveness of this narrative device on analyses of films by Woody Allen, Terrence Malick, and the Coen brothers, who are well-known for incorporating voice-over in their narrative styles.

L’intertextualité filmique de l’oeuvre des frères Coen permet un recyclage des formules génériques et stylistiques qui font partie des traditions du cinéma. Les frères Coen empruntent des techniques et des thèmes tant au cinéma de l’époque des studios qu’à des écrivains du XXe siècle comme Raymond Chandler ou James Joyce. Une étude narratologique des procédes des frères Coen apportera une appréciation de leursinnovations dans la mise en scène. Leurs réécritures des schémas du passé donnent à ces films des ancrages dans la contemporanéité. Cette esthétique de réécriture sera analysée dans le contexte de l’histoire des idées et dans le contexte de la civilisation américaine contemporaine. Une mise en rapport avec des metteurs en scène de l’histoire du cinéma, comme Fritz Lang et Alfred Hitchcock, permettra d’évaluer les effets de leurs films sur le spectateur. / Film intertextuality in the Coen brothers’ films allows generic formulas and styles to be reformulated, in a reworking of cinema traditions. The Coen brothers borrow techniques and themes from the era of the Hollywood studio system as well as those of writers of the twentieth century like Raymond Chandler or James Joyce. A study of thenarratology of the Coen brothers’ oeuvre allows readers to appreciate their innovations in film direction. Their rewriting of schemas of the past is analyzed in the context of the history of ideas and of contemporary American civilization. In comparing their work to that of other directors in the history of cinema, such as Fritz Lang and Alfred Hitchcock,the effects of intertextuality on the spectator will be evaluated.

We started from the problem that the semiotics relationships between the poetic of Manoel de Barros and the film Caramujo-flor (Clam-flower) constitute what we can call Movies of Poetry. Therefore, our aim is to analyze the film and the poems that make it, in a correlating way, to prove the raised problem. This analysis was developed around three significant axes: the metaphor of the mosaic that translates the intersemiotics relationships; the fictional imaginary and its presence in culture, going through the Baroque and the eroticism of the poetic word and its recreation in the filmic object; finally, how the proliferous relationship of the intertextual, metalinguistic and hybridization elements influence the semiotic-cultural mediations accomplished by the medias, especially the movies. We articulated, therefore, as first hypothesis, that Clam-flower, when proposing a new look on the appealing narrative structures of the independent movies, enrolls in what Buñuel and Pasolini call Movies of Poetry . As a methodological approach, we will use the necessary bibliographical research instead of the analysis of the procedures on the construction of the studied works. Based on the authors that study movies and in the translating theories between semiotics and movies, joined to Joel Pizzini's and Manoel de Barros bibliographies. The based theory is the semiotics of lotmaniana root, in which the dialogue among the cultural compounds permeates the frontier zones of the arts, promoting generating spaces of sense that move dynamically. Concerning movies, we will use the theories of Eisenstein, Pasolini and Buñuel. In order to elucidate the questions concerning the Baroque, we will read Sarduy and Haroldo de Campos. We also point out authors as Paul Zumthor, who works with the performance specification of the oral language. We also go through the translation theorists (from Benjamin to the concretes) along with those of the miscegenation (Laplantine, Gruzinski, Amálio Pinheiro, etc) / O objeto desta pesquisa é o estudo das traduções intersemióticas feitas pela obra fílmica de Joel Pizzini Caramujo-flor ao re(ler)os signos verbais e visuais que se entrelaçam na construção do texto poético de Manoel de Barros na obra Gramática Expositiva do Chão-Poesia quase toda. Partimos do problema de que as relações semióticas entre a poética de Manoel de Barros e o filme Caramujo-flor constitui o que podemos chamar de Cinema de Poesia. Nosso objetivo portanto é analisar o filme e os poemas que o constituem, de maneira correlacional, para comprovarmos o problema levantado. Análise esta desenvolvida em torno de três eixos de significação: a metáfora do mosaico que traduz as relações intersemióticas; o imaginário ficcional e sua presentificação na cultura, perpassando pelo barroco e pelo erotismo da palavra poética e sua recriação no objeto fílmico; por fim, como a relação prolífera dos elementos intertextuais, metalingüísticos e de hibridação influenciam as mediações semiótico-culturais realizadas pelas mídias, especialmente o cinema. Articulamos, portanto, como hipótese primeira que Caramujo-flor, ao propor um novo olhar sobre as estruturas narrativas recorrentes do cinema independente se inscreve no que Buñuel e Pasolini chamam de Cinema de Poesia . Como procedimento metodológico usaremos a pesquisa bibliográfica necessária à análise dos procedimentos de construção das obras estudadas. Fundamentando-nos nos autores que estudam cinema e nas teorias tradutórias entre semiótica e cinema, agregados as bibliografias de Joel Pizzini e Manoel de Barros. A teoria base é a semiótica de raiz lotmaniana, segundo a qual o diálogo entre os complexos culturais permeia as zonas fronteiriças das artes, promovendo espaços geradores de sentido que se movem dinamicamente. Sobre cinema lançaremos mão das teorias de Eisenstein, Pasolini e Buñuel. Para elucidar as questões referentes ao barroco leremos Sarduy e Haroldo de Campos. "I Will Pour Out My Spirit upon All Flesh": A Study on Joseph Smith's Reception of Joel 2:28–32

In 2001, President Gordon B. Hinckley, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints announced in an opening statement at General Conference, "The vision of Joel has been fulfilled wherein he declared," he then quoted the KJV of Joel 2:28–32. Throughout the remaining six and a half years of his life, he provided no commentary on the fulfillment of this passage. Fulfillment of the passage is also referenced in the standard works for The LDS Church in Joseph Smith—History (JS—H 1:41) and in the New Testament (Acts 2:17–21). An array of publications before and after President Hinckley's statement, comment on the fulfillment of Joel 2:28–32. This thesis is not another voice commenting on the fulfillment of Joel's ancient message. However, in the many statements made on the fulfillment of Joel 2:28–32 a gap exists, in that, no study has been conducted looking specifically at the perceptions and all of the statements of Joseph Smith on the fulfillment of this passage. This thesis seeks to fill that gap. In this thesis I contend that Joseph Smith did not believe that Joel 2:28–32 had ever been fulfilled prior to his lifetime, and that Joseph utilized the prophecy and its fulfillment as a form of motivation for his followers to preach, gather, and build up Zion. Chapter one summarizes some of the history of Christianity's view of fulfillment of Joel 2:28–32. Because Joseph Smith was not raised in a vacuum, chapter two unfolds the Christian commentary on Joel's prophecy found in Bibles produced in the antebellum era that Joseph Smith lived in. Chapter three elucidates the beliefs about the fulfillment of Joel's prophecy which two contemporary Christians had—Alexander Campbell and William Miller—to show how distinct Joseph Smith's teachings and beliefs were in his time–period. Chapter four provides every documented statement Joseph Smith made on Joel's prophecy, and every primary allusion that points back to Joel 2:28–32. It provides analysis to show what connections Joseph did and did not make with fulfillment of Joel 2:28–32 and shows that Joel 2:28–32 was one of the several primary scriptural texts for the restoration. Chapter five demonstrates that other early leaders within Joseph's church also saw the fulfillment of Joel taking place in their day and as a part of their experiences. This thesis shows that Joseph Smith did not consider the fulfillment of Joel on a single occasion, as many of his predecessors and contemporaries had, but through publications and sermons he produced a more thorough structure of belief's regarding its place in the world and especially his church than any other up–start evangelical Christian leader in the antebellum era. He produced a number of revelations, which quote the unique language of Joel. He also pointed people to the ongoing fulfillment of the passage multiple times between 1830 and 1839, showing that he did not believe that fulfillment would come in a specific singular event.

A Systematic Review of Intervention Efforts to Reduce Indoor Tanning

This chapter reviews the literature examining interventions to reduce indoor tanning (IT). The first objective was to highlight programs that show promise for large scale dissemination. The second objective was to promote criteria and standards for future intervention research efforts. The scope of interest for this review includes universal (for everyone in the population), selective (for those in the population who are at a greater risk), and indicated (for those who already are experiencing conditions that identify them as at risk) programs. The evaluation of the interventions resulted in three levels of evidence: (1) most promising, (2) emerging, and (3) mixed. For an intervention to be considered “most promising”, it was required that ten criteria be met through examination of research findings in published reports consistent with Flay and colleagues (Prev Sci 6(3):151–175, 2005). Interventions that were classified as “emerging” met most of the criteria. Finally, interventions classified as “mixed” did not reach threshold on more than two criteria that were deemed critical. The results revealed that there was very limited research on IT interventions that meet all the evaluation criteria. Only one intervention approach met all of the criteria (Appearance Booklet) (Hillhouse and Turrisi, Behav Med 25(4):395–409, 2002; Hillhouse et al., Cancer 113(11):3257–3266, 2008). Although the number of published papers in the IT area has increased dramatically over the past decade, these efforts have yet to translate into rigorously conducted intervention trials. Teologisk normativitet - en vetenskaplig synd? : En komparativ analys angående acceptabel normativitet inom akademisk teologi

The purpose of this essay is to discuss what kind of normativity can be considered acceptable in academic theology today in Sweden. This I do by critically and comparatively analyze two debates. The first debate is from Sweden and has its origin in the book Den okände Jesus written by Cecilia Wassén och Tobias Hägerland. The second debate is an international debate about Joseph Ratzingers or Benedict XVI book Jesus of Nazareth. For the purpose of comparison I am working with three analytical questions. I am asking the different texts whether the author express any ontological assumptions or if he or she argumenting at a epistemological level, what enables intersubjective verifiability according to the author and what kind of methods does the author see as acceptable to reach historical knowledge? This questions works as a methodological cluster and the answers indicate what the authors think about acceptable normativity in academic theology. After that I identify similarities and divergences and I ́m comparing different positions and arguments. Finally I evaluate the reasonability of these positions and argument. The reader will be lead to the conclusion that intersubjective verifiability in academic theology and exegetic doesn ́t demand naturalistic or empirical points of departure but rather transparency and cognitive understandable argument which includes theological normative arguments and research. An attitude I name as methodological reciprocity.

The book of Jonah contains two symmetrical parts (1-2 and 3-4), each part containing three scenes, each scene relating to a scene in the other part: 1.1-3 // 3.1-3a; 1.4-16 // 3.3b-10; 2.1-11 // 4.1-11. The structure of 1.4-16, including the inner development of the mariners, shows that a conversion of the Seamen to Yahweh is intended. In the same manner the structure of 3.3b-10 and the positive characterization of the Ninevites show that a conversion to the one true God is intended. These results are each confirmed by an intertextual analysis of 1.14 and 16 and of the faith, the repentance and the God who relents. Result: The book of Jonah teaches that Non-Israelites can have a relationship with Yahweh.
