A defining feature of American abstract expressionist painting is its enormous size and scale. Heroic ambition, the vast American landscape, and the sense of "something big" happening in American painting are often cited as determining factors in this phenomenon. This dissertation examines how Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, and Mark Rothko not only painted large-scale canvases but, following trends in modern architecture, shifted their painting towards the construction of architectural environments, thus promoting the transformation of painting from a window in the wall to a wall without a window. The artist and architect Tony Smith, a close friend and colleague of these painters, played an active role in encouraging their interest in modern architecture. As a result of their investigations into the physical, as well as conceptual, limits of the canvas, these artists shifted the viewer’s experience from a perceptual experience of pictorial space to a physical encounter with actual space. In contradiction to the notion of the purely optical, one could describe this as a somatic viewing experience, tactile and active, which anticipated specific concerns of 1960s minimalism. This achievement redefines Pollock's, Newman's, and Rothko's legacy to the subsequent generation of artists and places their production into a broader historical framework. / text

Nowadays, the number of applications which need more than one power source is increasing. Distributed generating systems or micro-grid systems normally use more than one power source or more than one kind of energy source. Also, to increase the utilization of renewable energy sources, diversified energy source combination is recommended. For example, a wind-photovoltaic generating system, a combination of a wind generator and photovoltaic array, can give a greater degree of freedom when choosing the install location. The combination of more power sources and diversified power sources makes it possible to obtain higher availability in a power system. A parallel connection of converters has been used to integrate more than one energy source in a power system. However, a multiple-input converter (MIC) can generally have the following advantages compare to a combination of several individual converters; (1) cost reduction, (2) compactness, (3) more expandability and (4) greater manageability. First, this research suggests MIC topology comparison criteria that can be used as a decision guide for choosing a MIC topology depending on the application. Even though there are some MIC topology classification methods such as by the kind of combining methods, the classification methods are not enough to choose one particular topology. The comparison criteria presented in this dissertation are practical enough to decide which topology is suitable and should be chosen. Second, a new MI modified inverse Watkins-Johnson converter (MIMIWJC) without a coupled inductor is proposed. The circuit configuration of this converter and its operation principles are described, including the open-loop and closed-loop circuit. For control purposes, a small signal model of the proposed converter is developed using Middlebrook’s extra element theorem. In addition, two possible control methods are introduced in this dissertation. Finally, the theoretical analysis of the proposed converter is verified with simulations and experiments. / text

This thesis examines the implications of three early twentieth-century First Nations collaborations that were produced in the context of salvage ethnography and attributed mainly to their non-aboriginal collaborators: Henry Tate and Franz Boas’s Tsimshian Mythology (1916), E. Pauline Johnson and Chief Joe Capilano’s Legends of Vancouver (1912), and Chief William K’HHalserten Sepass and Eloise Street’s Sepass Poems (1911-15). By using a versioning framework to attain a “fluid” reading across variants, I can identify the intercultural mediations across versions and attempt to engage in a form of digital repatriation. Through digital archives like Kimberly Christen’s “Mukurtu” project, these cultural documents can be repatriated and accessed only by those who, following cultural protocols, should have access. Ultimately, an analysis of variants suggests that while salvage ethnography privileged the non-aboriginal collaborators, the changeability of these narratives across versions functions to perpetually unfix these texts from a static concept of aboriginal identity.

Religious language has been theorized in multiple ways. I will look at how religious language has been theorized in the work of Jürgen Habermas and in the field of cognitive linguistics. I will compare these approaches to religious language and assess the results. In doing so, I will indirectly assess the confluence of these two theoretical approaches. My conclusion is that even with the similarities between these theoretical frames, religion is thematized differently under each method. Jürgen Habermas’s definition of religion as the output of ritual praxis is not compatible with the normative place of religious language found in cognitive linguistics.

Partindo da descrição das estratégias autobiográficas nele adotadas, evidenciamos seu caráter camaleônico e performático, tanto na construção da narrativa, quanto na vivência identitária do narrador-personagem. Nessa perspectiva, elucidamos como o procedimento literário adotado por Johnson deixa entrever também uma dimensão de crítica política e cultural. A partir disso, apresentamos uma leitura alternativa da obra através da conceituação do termo autobiografia cultural . Para tanto, refletimos sobre as categorias já existentes relativas ao espaço autobiográfico, mostrando seus limites e possibilidades: de um lado, discutimos suas insuficiências para pensar o romance; de outro, mostramos até que ponto corroboram a proposição do conceito alternativo, que aqui sugerido: o termo autobiografia cultural . / [en] Given the current interest in the writings of themselves construction, due to the proliferation of its manifestations which are in constant reinvention process, we discuss in this dissertation the novel The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man written by James Weldon Johnson, issued anonymously in 1912. From the description of the autobiography strategies adopted in it, we show it s chameleonic and performative character, both in narrative construction and identity experience of the narrator-character. In this perspective, we elucidate how Johnson s literary procedure suggests a dimension of political and cultural criticism. From this moment, we present an alternative reading of the book through the definition of the term cultural autobiography . Therefore, we reflect on the categories of autobiographical space, highlighting theirs limits and possibilities – on one hand, we discuss theirs insufficient to think of the novel; on the other hand, we show to what extent they corroborate to define the alternative concept that it is suggest here: the term cultural autobiography . This paper provides an explanation of the concepts John A. Warden III describes regarding the use of air power and if this theory can be found, within the confines of an unconventional war. The U.S. ability to air power is overwhelming, however the right kind of warfare can force this great power to abandon their military and political objectives by exhausting its resources over time as it becomes increasingly costly, both economically, politically and morally, to wage war. The research deals with operation Rolling Thunder and John A. Warden IIIs theory in relation to this massive bombing campaign. Firstly, you will find an analysis of John. A. Warden III's works. Five concepts can be found: Airspace Control, center of gravity, air interdiction, the enemy as a system and parallel attack. Secondly, a content analysis of relevant literature in the context of a case study on Operation Rolling Thunder. Thirdly a comparative analysis between the two results with a subsequent discussion relating the main problem and an effort is made to determine the outcome of the investigation and if the purpose of this paper has been met. Within the implementation phases of Operation Rolling Thunder, it is possible to distinguish som of Wardens key concepts regarding air power utilization. Even though the four phases illustrate a continuous change in strategy, Wardens theory The Enemy as a system was never implemented. / Denna uppsats ger en förklaring av John A. Warden IIIs teori om nyttjande av luftmakt och de begrepp som utgör grunden för denna. Frågan om grundbegreppen går att återfinna inom ramarna för ett otraditionellt krig tas upp. USAs förmåga till luftmakt är stor, men med rätt sorts krigföring kan även denna makt tvingas överge sina militära och politiska mål genom utmattning över en längre tidsperiod eftersom det blir allt dyrare, både ekonomiskt, politiskt och moraliskt, att föra krig. Här avhandlas operationen Rolling Thunder och John A. Warden IIIs teoris anknytning till denna enorma bombkampanj. Inledningsvis återfinns en innehållsanalys av John. A. Warden IIIs litteratur, vilket utmynnar i fem begrepp: Luftrumskontroll, tyngdpunkter, flyganfall på djupet, fienden som ett system och parallell attack. Efter det följer en innehållsanalys av relevant litteratur inom ramen för en fallstudie om Rolling Thunder och slutligen påträffas en komparativ analys mellan de två resultaten och en efterföljande diskussion knyter an till problemformuleringen och försöker utröna resultatet av undersökningen och om syftet med uppsatsen uppfyllts. I genomförandefaserna av Operation Rolling Thunder är det möjligt att urskilja vissa av Wardens centrala begrepp och tankar om luftmaktens nyttjande, men hans teori som helhet går inte att återfinna i genomförandet av Rolling Thunder. Trots att de fyra faserna åskådliggör en upprepad förändring i strategi, användes aldrig Wardens teori om fienden som ett system.
