The purpose of this study was to provide an analysis of the immediate and long-range implications of three speeches: (1) August 8,1938, (2) September 19, 1952, and (3) September 19, 1956, which J. Reuben Clark, Jr. delivered during the annual Pre-School Faculty Conference at Brigham Young University. The speeches were analyzed and compared to determine the goals and charges given and to determine whether there was carry-over from speech to speech.The significant findings included: (1) The LDS Church school system is to be manned only by those individuals who have strong, undeviating testimonies of a living Savior, of the Restored Gospel, and of a living Prophet; and who are prepared in both content and technique within their special fields of teaching. (2) Brigham Young University is the most important school in the world, to become even greater, because of the unique charge to maintain a balance between spiritual and secular education. (3) The advice and counsel given by Elder Clark has been followed, reaffirmed, and has become the standard by which the University shall maintain its quest toward excellence in education.

The political views of J. Reuben Clark, Jr. have been of interest to the membership of the Mormon Church since the year 1933, when Clark was appointed second counselor to Heber. J. Grant, then President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This interest was generated In part by the various political positions of importance which Clark held since 1906, and by the numerous politically-oriented speeches which he gave from time to time throughout the Church and the nation.According to Clark, the nature of man's relationship to the state was determined by a pre-earth existence. Clark believed man to be a spiritual child of God, inheriting certain divine attributes which could ultimately result in the individual becoming a god. Man's earthly experience was planned to eventually make this possible.Clark felt that governments were instituted by God for the purpose of assuring to man "free agency" or the right to choose for himself. However, Clark believed that since men had "free agency" they were thus free to change the governmental process as they desired. In many instances this resulted in the formation of governments, which were corrupted by evil men, with the purpose of enslaving the populace and destroying "free agency" through the use of inhumane methods of warfare. Those governments which Clark feared the most were Communism and the Welfare State.

Denna uppsats behandlar två barnporträtt utförda av Alexander Roslin utifrån ett performativt perspektiv. Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka en relativt outforskad aspekt av dennes konstnärskap samt hur detta relaterar till det samhälle konstnären verkade i. Hur upplysningens syn på barnet tar sitt uttryck i Alexander Roslins två barnporträtt samt hur detta kan analyseras utifrån ett performativt perspektiv är två centrala frågeställningar för uppsatsen. Frågeställningarna kommer att besvaras genom ett antal teoretiska utgångspunkter, där Jean-Jacques Rousseaus Émile, eller Om uppfostran är mest central. Metoden som uppsatsen kommer tillämpa är baserad på en komparativ analys av de två barnporträtten utifrån ett performativt perspektiv. Uppsatsens disposition är uppdelad i två kapitel, där det initiala beskriver och jämför de två porträtten, och det andra analyserar porträtten utifrån begreppet performativitet. Uppsatsens generella resultat visar på en korrelation mellan det allmänna samhällets syn på barnet under 1700-talet och Alexander Roslins porträtteringar av barn. Detta understryks av uppsatsens performativa analys, som vidare bidrar till en djupare förståelse för hur samhället under 1700-talet och dess ideal tar sitt uttryck i en konstnärs skildringar.

<p>Social theory by Goffman in the 60’s can still be applied to our society, especially to the new social form of Facebook. ”What precautions do Facebook members take when they publish content (text, photos, video) to avoid problems caused by the collapse of different social arenas? What do they think of their own self-presentation on the social website?” Data was collected trough an online survey, available for my Facebook friends in April-May 2010, and personal interviews with seven of the respondents. The results show that 126/128 respondents state they are their “true self” in their daily life, and not Facebook. Simultaneously, 75 respondents claim they have never had problems being themselves on Facebook. 65 people don’t recognize the presentation of people they know on Facebook, but 124 people say they have never received comments stating this. The norms and rules of social interaction on this social site are not yet set, and Facebook members respond to this by strict control of what they publish. It is evident that Facebook members enjoy peeking behind the self-presentation of people they know. FOR UNION AND SLAVERY, FOR SLAVERY AND UNION: KNOW-NOTHINGS IN GEORGIA 1854-1860 by LESLYE JOY ALLEN Under the Direction of Dr. Wendy Hamand Venet ABSTRACT This thesis examines the Know-Nothing (or “American”) Party in the state of Georgia as a political entity whose leading members descended from the bipartisan Constitutional Union Party of Georgia in 1850. This thesis affirms that Georgia Know-Nothings emerged in 1854 and lasted until 1859 as a political party devoted to settling the sectional controversies brought on by the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854. Their role in the 1856 presidential campaign of Millard Fillmore and the 1857 gubernatorial campaign of Benjamin Harvey Hill, along with their role and membership in the revitalized national Constitutional Union Party in 1860 are also critically examined. The major argument is that Georgia Know-Nothings were not nativist, but were conservative unionists whose aim was to protect slavery and prevent the secession of Georgia and the South by using ideologies and political techniques honed while they were members of Georgia’s Constitutional Union Party. Stepping Into a Moment: A Historical Reconstruction of Lord Dunmore's PortraitNakoff, Slade 01 May 2022 (has links)
The study of material culture study has long been estranged from mainstream academic discourse often dismissed as the examination of pots and pans. Historians are beginning to realize that material culture and cultural reconstruction offer vital insights into the past. Building upon new developments, my project reconstructs the items painted by Joshua Reynolds in his famous painting of Lord Dunmore. This reconstruction allows for the efforts of unnamed tradesmen to be retraced, making a few people and their efforts which were lost to history known once again. By employing written documentation in tandem with extant artifacts, the project recreates every object in the portrait as it would have been done in the past. This study put to the test the benefit of material culture as an academic discipline. By employing an interdisciplinary approach, it allowed for new insights into the past by combining most notably experimental archeology, material culture studies, and academic history. The findings of this research provide insight into the effectiveness of the experiential analysis technique for the purpose of historical study and how it benefits not only current understanding of artifacts themselves but also fills gaps in the lives of those who created and used these items.

The thesis examines the archaeological and epigraphic data from Canaan during the Late Bronze Age in order to evaluate the historicity of the Israelite Conquest accounts in the books of Joshua and Judges. The specific sites examined in detail include Jericho, Ai, Hazor, Shechem, and Dan. Additionally, the chronology and setting for the period of the alleged Israelite Conquest is explained through both textual and archaeological sources, and several ancient documentary sources are examined which demonstrate the presence of Israel in Canaan during the Late Bronze Age.
