Silke, Norman Joshua 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study project provides an overview of the frequency and quality of reporting on epilepsy in the South African press and the role this plays in destigmatising the condition. It is introduced by a comprehensive background study, after which articles published in the country's leading newspapers during the period 2000 to 2002 are analysed. The perceptions of members of the public and medical doctors are examined by means of interviews and questionnaires, as part of an effort to determine how coverage of epilepsy is currently being handled. Suggestions on how the quality of information on epilepsy and the distribution thereof may be improved are also made. The conclusion is that newspaper coverage of epilepsy in South Africa is largely inadequate. During the above-mentioned period very few articles on epilepsy were published. Those that did appear, were mostly news items. There was a serious lack of investigative reporting. Dramatic headlines accompanying certain articles did not lead to greater understanding of the condition. At times reporting was even clearly irresponsible. The press should be an instrument to inform epilepsy patients, their families and their communities, and to guard against stigmatising. Science journalists should report clearly and thoroughly and be fully informed about their chosen subject. The study indicates a need for a greater focus on science by the press. Newspapers should provide training for science journalists and ensure that reporters are aware of the latest developments in the field of science and technology. More experts, like doctors, neurologists, and board members of organisations (like Epilepsy South Africa) should be involved in the writing of articles. Epilepsy is far more common than is generally believed, but many epilepsy patients hide their condition for fear of discrimination. As a result, they do not receive the help and support they are entitled to. In poor and disadvantaged communities epilepsy sufferers are still viewed with distrust and suspicion. It is the duty of the press to throw light on the condition and to keep focusing on it, so that fear and ignorance may be replaced with facts and information. Soms was verslaggewing selfs onverantwoordelik.

For this, we evaluated how the use of smartphone as work tools triggered conflicts and tensions among reporters from Diário do Nordeste who started questioning their own identity as newspaper’s journalists. The choice of Diário as the object of this analysis can be explained by the fact that the newspaper ¬– the second in circulation in the northeast of Brazil – is one of the first in the local scenario to implement journalistic convergence strategies. We adopted as the delimitation of the research the case study of what Diário do Nordeste identifies as multimedia practice. Using data collection techniques, as the empirical observation and depth interviews, was possible to comprehend how the production of multimedia content generated the construction of a whole new habitus at Diário’s newsroom, marked by the development of journalist’s new cognitive competences. We also investigated how the transformations descendant from multimediatic production influenced the relation of force and power in the newsroom. Starting from the hypothesis that the journalists which defines themselves as multimedia are in dominance, we initiated the analysis of conflicts and tensions established on the daily routine of these professionals. From theorical point of view, we discussed identity concept, modernity consequences, we also did a communication theories revision and of its relations with discussion about the presence of technology in contemporaneity and yet reflected about mediatic and journalistic convergence, using the ideas from authors like Henry Jenkins (2008), Salaverría e Negredo (2008), Esther Applegren (2005) and Rosely Fragoso (2006). In the end, we presented how Diário do Nordeste’s journalists define themselves, if as newspapers journalists or multimedia ones and reflected about the new professional shape designed on labour market, marked by the knowledge, practice and paginal functions and on-line journalism related functions convergence.

An interactional study of the "comentosphere": four case studies of comments published in brazilian journalistic blogs

The present work lies on the borderline between Linguistics and Communication Studies. It aims to investigate the interactions within the comments published by readers at four institutional journalism blogs: Blog Noblat MiriamLeitão.com Blog, Blog do Reinaldo Azevedo Blog and Josias de Souza. It attempts to define which Involvement strategies are used by the readers comments to relate to the blog author (the blogger), to other readers who also publish their opinions (reader/commentators) and to the topic of the text (the post). Moreover,he purpose of this re search is to clarify whether or not real conversation occurs within the comments window, in terms of the criteria described by authors of Communication Studies. To this end, a corpus of 400 comments was compiled whose content demonstrates readers critical views. All the comments deal with the same theme: the blackout which occurred on November 10th 2009 in 18 Brazilian states. Such messages have been analyzed from a predominantly qualitative method based on the interpretation of the data, but a quantitative approach have also been considered to allow for more comprehensive and comparative data. In the absence of a theoretical linguistics framework which could cover the interactional phenomena identified within the comments sections of blogs, a proposal of empirical analysis based on Eggins and Slade (1997) was developed, which guided the entire research. Among the findings of the survey it may be argued that while blogs have inaugurated a new form of relationship between the journalist and their audience, there is, in addition, evidence that most readers use the blogs as a space for the publication of personal opinions, rather than an environment with extensive interactive possibilities

Georges Henein, la quête de l'absolu : une poétique de l’illumination contrariée / Georges Henein, the absolute quest : a tormented chase of enlightment

Demestre, Marie 19 December 2013 (has links)
Affiliated to the surrealist movement through Trotski and Breton's "Fédération Internationale pour un Art Révolutionnaire", Henein has made writing his ally, the only one able to touch what is still pure in this world. As a writer of assertive sharp theories, with convincing aphorisms, he has given his writing some nihilistic aspects, in a refusal of the world organized around the real. Yet, after the study of his 40-yearsrange corpus, a hidden dimension appears, almost coded, spread here and there through enigmas. Translating the desire to rethink the sacred into something that would link the being to itself, Henein offered a transgeneric poetics meant to explore the consciousness. Relying on a spiritual terminology reinvested in a deaf anger, the writer examined all enemies of the thought, leaving the reader appreciate a pact with the impossible
