<p>"We Can Learn to Mother Ourselves": The Queer Survival of Black Feminism 1968-1996 addresses the questions of mothering and survival from a queer, diasporic literary perspective, arguing that the literary practices of Black feminists Audre Lorde, June Jordan, Alexis De Veaux and Barbara Smith enable a counternarrative to a neoliberal logic that criminalizes Black mothering and the survival of Black people outside and after their utility to capital. Treating Audre Lorde and June Jordan as primary theorists of mothering and survival, and Alexis De Veaux and Barbara Smith as key literary historical figures in the queer manifestation of Black feminist modes of literary production, this dissertation uses previously unavailable archival material, and queer of color critique and critical Black diasporic theoretical approaches to create an intergenerative reading practice. An intergenerative reading practice interrupts the social reproduction of meaning and value across time, and places untimely literary moments and products in poetic relationship to each other in order to reveal the possibility of another meaning of life. Ultimately this dissertation functions as a sample narrative towards the alternate meaning of life that the poetic breaks of Black feminist literary production in the queer spaces of counter-cultural markets, classrooms, autonomous publishing collectives make possible, concluding that mothering is indeed a reflexive and queer way of reading the present in the service of a substantively different future in which our outlawed love survives.</p> / Dissertation

Mais especificamente, ele objetiva identificar a representação social (MOSCOVICI, 2003) do Movimento Passe Livre (MPL) no jornal Folha de S. Paulo. O corpus do trabalho são matérias publicadas no mês de junho de 2013, as quais totalizam 20 textos, 19 publicados no caderno Cotidiano e 1 publicado no caderno Poder. A metodologia baseia-se na análise de conteúdo (BARDIN, 2002) e revisão bibliográfica. A pesquisa se debruça inicialmente sobre aos primórdios da organização de movimentos sociais no país, para, em seguida, abordar o processo de redemocratização do Brasil pós Ditadura Militar, além de discorrer sobre o MPL, desde a tentativa de implementação da tarifa zero na cidade de São Paulo na gestão da então prefeita Luiza Erundina (1989/1992) até os protestos de junho de 2013, apresentando também uma discussão sobre a categoria de movimentos sociais (GOHN, 1997; SHERER-WARREN, 1993). Em um segundo momento aborda-se o jornal Folha de S. Paulo quanto a sua história, em especial a sua atuação na Ditadura Militar, Diretas-já e Fora Collor, além de uma análise sobre editoriais do jornal publicados em junho de 2013, artigos da coluna de Ombudsman e o documentário produzido pela Folha, intitulado Junho. Por fim, será apresentada uma discussão teórica sobre a categoria de representações sociais, a análise das matérias, com foco na relação entre esses dois pontos, além de uma entrevista com uma militante do MPL e a relação da sua fala com o teor das matérias. Ficou evidente, neste trabalho, que a Folha cria representações negativas do MPL, configurando, dessa forma, uma tentativa de deslegitimar o movimento.

Whitin this premise, this research uses discourse analysis as a methodology to observe how interactions between contents produced by users in platforms as Facebook, YouTube, and the Twitcasting and media portals promote a discursive transmedia happening. As a study case, the research also analyses the alternative media collective Mídia Ninja, analyzing its production structure and how it´s contents promoted interactions with the traditional media, promoting discutions on the new relationship between activism and media. / As manifestações iniciadas em junho 2013 no Brasil foram marcadas por uma grande produção de conteúdo em diversas plataformas por usuários, mídias alternativas e mídias tradicionais. Partindo dessa premissa, a pesquisa se utiliza metodologicamente da análise do discurso para observar como as interações entre os conteúdos produzidos para plataformas como Facebook, YouTube, Twitcasting e nos grandes portais de mídias promovem um acontecimento discursivo transmidiático. Como estudo de caso, a pesquisa também utilizará uma análise do grupo de mídia alternativa Mídia Ninja, ao investigar sua estrutura de produção e como seus conteúdos promoveram interações com a grande mídia promovendo, assim, discussões sobre as relações contemporâneas entre o ativismo e as mídias.

Baseia-se em trabalho de campo, especialmente na interlocução com crianças e, como um desdobramento, em entrevistas com adultos que começaram a dançar quadrilha na infância. A abordagem parte da caracterização dos festejos juninos e do movimento quadrilheiro da RMR, contexto em que as crianças quadrilheiras estão inseridas; apresenta as especificidades das quadrilhas infantis, evidenciando as relações de sociabilidade e autoridade; e, por fim, analisa trajetórias e relações de pertencimento de quadrilheiros/as crescidos/as em suas várias formas de continuar. Os resultados indicam, por um lado, que a experiência do dançar quadrilha na infância fortalece os sentidos de continuidade da brincadeira e, por outro, sinaliza para perspectivas de futuro mais amplas, distintas daqueles/as que não se inseriram ou continuaram no movimento. / This research is about the experiences of children during June Country Dance Festivals in the Metropolitan Area of Recife (MAR) and aims to comprehend the acceptance and Senses of continuity expressed by this group from the role of the merrymaking children. It's based on field work, especially interlocutions with children, complemented by interviews with adults who started playing country dances in their childhood. Its approach is focused on the characterization of the June festivals and the country dancer movement of the MAR, context in which country dancing children are involved; it presents peculiarities of children's country dance groups highlighting the relationship between sociability and authority; and, finally, it analyzes courses and relations of belonging of grown country dancers in their various means to remain. Results have shown, on one hand, that the experience in playing country dance strengthens the senses of continuity of the play and, on the other hand, broaden the expectancies of future of the dancers, in opposition to those who did not get involved or remained in the movement.

Esta pesquisa objetiva analisar a expressão da diversidade sexual e de gênero, interpelada por concepções de raça, no contexto das festas juninas de Belém. A partir de etnografia produzida em concursos juninos realizados em bairros periféricos da cidade e também em certames promovidos pela Prefeitura Municipal de Belém e pelo Governo do Estado do Pará, propõe-se abordar as festas juninas como um momento de congregação social ritualizado. Pressupõe-se que a participação de certos sujeitos nesse contexto festivo (especialmente as mulheres cisgênero, os homens homossexuais, as travestis e pessoas transgênero) pode render importantes reflexões acerca de processos nos quais gênero, raça e sexualidade são articulados em performance. Numa abordagem que privilegia a análise do contexto etnográfico a partir da problematização de marcadores sociais da diferença articulados, esta pesquisa dedica-se ao entendimento de como as festas juninas produzem sujeitos generificados, racializados e sexualizados. A intenção é dar inteligibilidade a um tenso processo de reconhecimento de certos sujeitos no contexto de realização de um ciclo festivo popular produzido pelo Estado, mas também por produtores culturais das periferias de Belém. / This research aims to analyze the expression of sexual and gender diversity, intersected by conceptions of race, in the context of the June festivals in Belém. From ethnography produced in June competitions held on \"peripheral\" areas of the city and also in competitions promoted by Belém City Hall and Government of the State of Pará, it is proposed to address these contests as a moment of ritualized social congregation. It is assumed that the participation of certain subjects in this festive context (especially cisgender women, gay men, travestis and transgender people) can yield important insights about processes in which gender, race and sexuality are articulated in performance. In an approach that focuses on the analysis of the ethnographic context from the questioning of social markers of difference articulated, this research is dedicated to the understanding of how the June festivals produce gendered, racialized and sexualized people. The intention is to give intelligibility to a tense process of recognition of certain subjects in the context of a popular festive cycle produced by the State but also by peripheral cultural producers in Belém.

[pt] Nam June Paik é considerado como artista pioneiro da vídeoarte, forma de arte que surgiu na década de 1960 e que explora a imagem eletrônica e suas propriedades enquanto material expressivo ontologicamente diferente das outras formas de imagem, assim como seu uso em instalações, ambientes com circuito fechado e em redes de comunicação. Tendo iniciado sua carreira como compositor de música eletrônica e artista de performance no grupo Fluxus, Paik criou partituras, objetos musicais e peças de antimúsica que irão surgir em parte como desdobramentos de sua interpretação das questões abertas pela obra do compositor americano John Cage. O contato com o compositor e o estudo da eletrônica provocarão uma reorientação significativa em seu trabalho, que num primeiro momento irá caracterizar-se pela utilização do aparelho de televisão como médium artístico através de modificações de seu circuito interno e de hibridizações que desfiguram a imagem eletrônica e permitem a participação do público na manipulação dos sinais eletrônicos que a compõem. A partir dessas experiências, os trabalhos de Paik irão contribuir na definição de uma estética da imagem eletrônica e explorar seus recursos expressivos mediante a apropriação de novos recursos tecnológicos e uso de seu sintetizador vídeo, uma consequência das buscas do artista em tornar a televisão um sistema aberto e em criar uma síntese entre música e artes visuais. Definida como tentativas de humanizar a tecnologia, a obra de Nam June Paik oferece em sua variedade uma rica fonte para reflexões sobre o papel do artista em relação ao fenômeno técnico. Ao aventurarse na esfera da arte-comunicação, Paik irá demonstrar de que forma o artista pode aproximar sua atividade de uma práxis social fundindo campos de conhecimento distintos, fazendo previsões e subvertendo o uso institucionalizado das mídias, provocando assim transformações na superestrutura da sociedade. / [fr] Nam June Paik est consideré comme étant l’artiste pionnier de le videoart, forme d’art créé dans les années 1960 qui explore l’image électronique et ses proprietés comme matière expressive ontologiquement différent des autres formes d’image, ainsi comme son utilisation dans les instalations, dans les environements avec circuits fermés et dans les réseaux de communication. Ayant debuté comme compositeur de musique électronique et comme artiste de performance dans le group Fluxus, Paik a créé des partitures, des objets musicaux et des pièces d’antimusique qui apparaîtront comme les dédoublements de son interprétation de les questions ouvertes par l’ouvrage du compositeur américain John Cage. Le rencontre avec le compositeur et l’étude d’électronique provoqueront une significative réorientation dans son travail qui, dans ce moment, s’est caractérisé par l’utilisation de l’appareil de télévision comme medium artistique à travers des modifications dans le circuit interne et des hybridations qui défigurent l’image électronique et permettent la participation du public dans la manipulation des signaux électroniques qui les composent. LL.M. (International Commercial Law) / This dissertation concerns a comparative analysis of Brazilian, Indian and South African private international law principles on the exercise of jurisdiction in international civil and commercial cases. The intention is to uncover the fundamental grounds of jurisdiction in these legal systems and in doing so draw attention to their comparable characteristics. Emphasis is placed on matters of a commercial nature. Furthermore, a discussion of the Hague Convention on Choice of Court Agreements provides insight on the Convention’s purpose and its possible influence on and implications for jurisdictional rules found in the private international law of the IBSA countries should they become members to the Convention.

Density-dependence is considered one of the most important regulators of population growth, and it has been documented across a wide variety of species. Typically, population growth rate and components thereof decline with increasing density (i.e., negative density-dependence); however, in species that exhibit high population densities and social behavior, positive density-dependence (i.e., Allee effect) may occur at low density. June sucker, a federally endangered lake sucker endemic to Utah Lake, Utah, USA, occurred historically at high density, and it exhibits coordinated feeding behavior. These characteristics indicate a potential for the existence of an Allee effect at current low population densities. To determine effects of density on growth, survival, and diet, I experimentally manipulated density of young June sucker in replicated enclosures in a natural environment. Larval June sucker were placed in enclosures at four different densities, and growth, survival, and diet of fish, and availability of prey (to determine selectivity) were measured at two time intervals. Both individual growth and survival were significantly lower at the lowest density compared to higher densities, indicative of a component Allee effect. Diets of individuals at low densities were more selective than diets of individuals at intermediate and high densities, suggesting a change in feeding strategy with density. Reduced growth and survival at low density suggests that corresponding, highly selective, feeding strategies may be less efficient than feeding strategies employed at higher densities. Allee effects appear to be an important consideration for recovery of this endangered species, and such effects may be common in historically abundant, but currently rare species.

Due to the endangerment of the June sucker (Chasmistes liorus), the lower two miles of Hobble Creek, Utah has been the focus of several restoration efforts. The portion of the creek between Interstate 15 and Utah Lake has been moved into a more "natural" channel and efforts are now being made to expand restoration to the east side of the freeway. This thesis reports on three different parts of a sedimentological analysis performed on Hobble Creek. The first part is a data set that contains information about the particle size distribution on the bed of Hobble Creek between 400 W and Interstate 15 in Springville, Utah. Particle size distributions were obtained for eleven sub-reaches within the study section. Particle size parameters such as D50 were observed to decrease from an average of 72 mm to 24 mm downstream from the 1650 W crossing and Packard Dam. Streambed armoring was observed along most of the reach. This data set can be used as input for PHABSIM software to determine the location and availability of existing spawning material for June sucker during a range of flows. The second part of this thesis compares predictions from four bed-load transport models to bed-load transport data measured on Hobble Creek. In general, the Meyer-Peter, Muller and Bathurst models overpredicted sediment transport by several orders of magnitude while the Rosgen and Wilcock methods (both calibrated models) were fairly accurate. Design channel dimensions resulting from the bed-load transport predictions diverged as a function of discharge. Once validated, the models developed in this section can be used by design engineers to better understand sediment transport on Hobble Creek. The models may also be applied to other Utah Lake tributaries. The third section of the thesis introduces a detailed survey data set that covers the Hobble Creek floodplain on the shifted section between Interstate 15 and Utah Lake with an approximate 10 foot resolution grid. Water surface elevations at two flows, along with invert, fence, saddles, and other points, are labeled in the survey. A comparison with a survey completed last year did not reveal any significant lateral changes caused by the 2010 spring runoff. Due to the potential importance of the side ponds to June sucker survival, this data set can be used to monitor sedimentation in the side ponds. It may also be used in a GSSHA model to determine the magnitude of flow that is required before each side pond will be connected to the main channel.
