Knowledge and awareness of risk factors for cardiovascular disease in the Ga-Rankwa community.

Yuqiu, L, Wright, SCD 17 November 2008 (has links)
Cardiovascular disease causes 30% of deaths globally. By comparison, infectious disease accounts for 10% of global mortality. As these statistics indicate, cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in the world. In South Africa, through urbanisation and changes in lifestyle and dietary habits, the prevalence of risk factors and, by extension, the resulting morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease in black people, are expected to increase. Owing to the natural progression of the disease, the first ‘westernised illness’ is hypertension, which is very prevalent among the black population. Knowledge and awareness of risk factors are essential components of behaviour change; however, little is known about the knowledge and awareness of cardiovascular disease among the working-age people in the Ga-Rankuwa community. The purpose of the study was therefore to determine the knowledge and awareness of the identified risk factors among the working-age people (18-40 years old) in the Ga-Rankuwa community. The design was a quantitative survey. The study sample (n=604) was selected from zones 1, 2, 4 and 16 of Ga-Rankuwa to determine the prevalence of risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Only people with an identified risk factor were included in the knowledge and awareness survey (n=551). Data was gathered from July to October 2005. The data gathering was self-reported with a structured questionnaire. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and statistical analysis. The results obtained from the knowledge and awareness survey indicate that knowledge and awareness of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease are low in the Ga-Rankuwa community.

Knowledge and Awareness of Hepatitis C Virus Among Second Year Pharmacy Students

Holt, Justin, Kocol, Samuel January 2005 (has links)
Class of 2005 Abstract / Objectives: To determine the change in knowledge regarding the prevalence, risk factors, transmission, and treatment of hepatitis C infections before and after an educational presentation to second year pharmacy students. Methods: Two questionnaires were administered to the study subjects. The pre-test was administered two weeks prior to the educational presentation and the post-test was administered immediately following the presentation. Students were required to attend the lecture, but participation in the pre- and post-tests was voluntary. The questionnaires addressed issues regarding general hepatitis C virus information as well as opinion questions surrounding the subject’s feelings about themselves and the disease state. Results: The mean number of correct responses on the post-test was significantly higher than the mean number of correct responses on the pre-test (p < 0.001). There was no statistically significant difference between males and females when comparing mean pre-test, post- test, and change between pre- and post-test scores. The data found no association between a student’s perceived risk level for developing hepatitis C and their knowledge about the hepatitis C virus, whether they had received prior hepatitis C testing, or the mean number of correct responses on either the pre-test or post-test. Implications: An educational presentation on hepatitis C is an effective tool to increase the knowledge of pharmacy students concerning the hepatitis C virus and its risks, prevalence, and treatment options.

This study lectures about the sustainability and sustainable development concepts and the discussion about the theme in society. The aim is to relate this discussion to animal rights, emphasizing the initiatives that occur in this direction. Information is discussed as the basis of knowledge and awareness in society. It seeks to characterize the information transmitted through cinematographic animations aimed at children as a tool to raise awareness of animal rights, that is, as a means of educating to form citizens of value, guided by the concept of sustainability. This is an empirical study of a qualitative nature, whose exploratory objective is based on a documental research of the children's animations and whose analysis and interpretation of the data are guided by the method of content analysis. As a result, it is concluded that animations, when dealing with the relationship between men and animals, adopt basic concepts of speciesism and anthropocentrism, showing situations close to the prior knowledge of the public that they want to reach, contributing to the awareness of animal rights. A study to determine the forensic quality of records and record keeping by dentists in the greater Cape Town area

Opperman, Johan Frank January 2018 (has links)
Magister Chirurgiae Dentium - MChD (Maxillo-Facial & Oral Surgery) / South African dentists have a legal and ethical obligation to maintain complete and comprehensive dental records. In addition to the legal and ethical requirements, dental records are also important in the case of medico-legal issues, quality assurance processes and forensic purposes. Valuable forensic evidence contained in dental records are used in the identification of victims of mass disasters, personal victim identification e.g. in severely decomposed or skeletonized remains where DNA or other biometric data are not available. The victim identification process is highly dependent on complete, legible and accurate dental records. A review of the literature however shows that dental record keeping practices are sub-optimal worldwide. There is a paucity of studies in South Africa regards to dental record keeping practices. The aim of this study was to assess the record keeping practices of a sample of private practicing dentists in Cape Town and surrounding towns, for forensic dental purposes. Knowledge and awareness regards to forensic odontology as well as adherence to the guidelines prescribed by the Health Professional Council of South Africa were also assessed. This was a cross-sectional descriptive study, employing a researcher-administered questionnaire and a dental checklist for forensic valuable items in the dental file. The results were entered in a MS Excel spreadsheet and statistically analysed using IMB SPSS Statistics. This study concluded that most of the dental records kept by Cape Town dentists are near to optimal and would be helpful during forensic odontology investigations. However, shortcomings in record keeping practices exists which may compromise the forensic accuracy of their dental records. The study also shows a significant difference in dental record keeping practices by dentists practicing in lower income areas in Cape Town, compared to those practicing in economic affluent areas. The dentists in this study adhered to most of the guidelines prescribed by the Health Professional Council of South Africa however, important medico-legal information was missing from most dental records. This study hopes to contribute to future comprehensive studies in the broader South Africa to determine the validity of dental records for forensic odontology purposes.

Analysis of the decentralization of environmental management in Rwanda

Nsabimana, Patrick 25 August 2016 (has links)
The aim of this case study is to draw a picture about the present situation and highlight constraints and challenges to the implementation of National Environment Policy (NEP) in Rwanda by identifying limits and prospects for improving the ongoing implementation process. we found that environmental management at the local level is subject to the compounded effects of the obstacles faced by the local administration, the complex nature of environmental management, and the lack of assimilation of environmental issues at the national level. Environmental conditions suffer as a result, and there is a need for substantial modifications to improve the situation. Improved functions should lead to the enhancement of the local environment through: Higher investments from the regulated community subjected to more targeted enforcement, Private investments in infrastructure through the privatization of functions traditionally borne by the District, Pollution prevention through forward-looking planning, Greater efficiency in using available resources and justified requests to the central budget / Environmental Sciences / M. Förderung umweltbewussten Verhaltens durch wirksame(re) Nachhaltigkeitskommunikation

Helbling, Violetta 05 February 2018 (has links)

Factors influencing men's involvement in prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV programmes in Mambwe district, Zambia

Tshibumbu, Desire Dinzela 30 November 2006 (has links)
The study aimed at assessing the factors influencing the low involvement of men in prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV programmes in the Mambwe district, Zambia. The factors studied were grouped as knowledge and awareness, socio-cultural, programmatic and demographic characteristics. A quantitative, exploratory study was used and 127 men were interviewed. The major findings were: Knowledge of PMTCT was the strongest factor which was positively associated with the level of men's involvement in PMTCT. Socio-cultural and programmatic factors were found to negatively influence men's involvement (although weakly); and among the demographic characteristics, age and level of education were positively associated with an increase in the level of involvement, while the duration of the relationship with the female partner was negatively associated with the level of men involvement. / Health Studies / M.A. (Public Health)

Information and communication technologies for knowledge management processes in the public sector in Kenya : a case study of the State Department of Infrastructure

Mbugua, Nancy 02 1900 (has links)
Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are considered facilitators of knowledge management processes in organizations. This study investigated ICTs for knowledge management processes at the State Department of Infrastructure in Kenya. The study’s objectives were to: establish the level of knowledge management awareness, find out knowledge management processes, identify types of ICTs used for knowledge management processes, and identify challenges experienced by State Department of Infrastructure in the use of ICTs for knowledge management processes. The study findings were determined after applying a qualitative research approach and a case study research design. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 21 participants who were heads of sections at the State Department of Infrastructure in Kenya. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, analyzed and interpreted thematically according to the objectives of the study. Findings of the study revealed that most participants were aware of the meanings of the concepts of knowledge and knowledge management, types of knowledge and importance of knowledge management in the department. Knowledge management processes in the State Department of Infrastructure entail knowledge creation, codification, retention, sharing and storage. ICTs mostly used for knowledge management processes in the department include: emails, mobile phones, desktop computers, computer servers, and flash disks. The department is faced with the challenges of lack of knowledge management strategies, policies and adequate staff awareness on the use of ICTs for knowledge management processes. In conclusion, the State Department of Infrastructure has a functional ICT infrastructure. However, the department is not using ICTs provided by this study’s Web 2.0 driven SECI model for knowledge management processes such as blogs, wikis, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. The study therefore proposes that the State Department of Infrastructure should increase its use of Web 2.0 technologies, collaborative content systems and e-learning technologies. The department should also digitize its records; automate its library services; set up intranet, and adopt a centralized knowledge-based system. Further, Public Service Commission of Kenya should formulate a knowledge management strategy and policy to guide on the use of ICTs for knowledge management processes. This strategy and policy can then be cascaded to public sector organizations such as the State Department of Infrastructure. / Information Science / M.A. (Information Science)
