Blue Horses and Illuminating the Shadow : a novel manuscript and exegesis

The novel manuscript Blue Horses (published as Dust, by Random House Australia under its Woolshed Press Imprint, July 2009) focuses on a dusty corner of 1970’s Queensland in this evocative tale of family, shadows that hang over from childhood and beauty found in unexpected places. Its protagonist, Cecilia Maria, was named after saints and martyrs to give her something to live up to. “Over my dead body,” she vows. Her battles with a six-pack of brothers and the despised Kapernicke girls from the farm next door teach her an unforgettable lesson that echoes down through the years. Now she’s heading back to where it all began, with teenagers Jed and Jenna reluctantly in tow. She plans to dance on a grave and track down some ghosts. Instead she learns a new lesson at the gravesite of an old enemy. The exegesis examines Jung’s concept of the Shadow Archetype as a catalyst for individuation in writing for young adults. It discusses the need to re-vision Jung’s work within a feminist framework and contrasts it to Julia Kristeva’s work on the abject. Alyssa Brugman’s Walking Naked and Sonya Hartnett’s Sleeping Dogs are analysed in relation to these concepts and lead into my own creative reflections on, and justification for, use of the Shadow conceptual framework. In following my shadow and establishing a creative dialogue between my conscious intent and unconscious inspirations, I have discovered a writing self that is “other” to the professional writer persona of my past.

"A dark revolt of being" abjection, sacrifice and the real in performance art, with reference to the works of Peter van Heerden and Steven Cohen

This thesis is an exploration of some of the defining characteristics of performance art, and an investigation of how such characteristics relate to ritual. It highlights some key notions, such as that of the “Real” and the live, which are introduced in the first chapter. This chapter explores the theories of Peggy Phelan, Julia Kristeva and Jacques Lacan in its attempts to conceptualize the Real. It assesses how performance art as ritual attempts to revise traditional apparatuses of representation. It argues that, through a transgression of representation, performance art has the potential to challenge and revise established discourses on identity, culture and violence. The second chapter of this study is an attempt to provide a history and subsequent conceptualization of performance art, based on its exposition of the live. I have taken into consideration certain strategies that performance artists employ to evoke the live, referring specifically to the manipulation of the body. It is through abject encounters with the unsymbolizable “Real” that the performance artist reaches the borders of his/her subjective constitution, and performs a transformation of his/her identity that transcends the mechanisms of representation. The third chapter of this study attempts to find the connections that exist between performance art and sacrificial ritual. I will refer specifically to the theories of Rene Girard. Girard‟s notion of the “violent sacred” and its significance within sacrifice as an antidote to community crises will be explored in relation to collective transformation within the performance event. I choose to focus specifically on the role of the performer as surrogate victim/pharmakon, and the spectators/witnesses as part of the community. The fourth chapter explores how two South African performance artists, Steven Cohen (1961) and Peter van Heerden (1973), perform the abject body as the monster. Kristeva‟s notion of the abject will be examined in terms of the transformation of the individual performer as subject within performance art, and how, through the assumption of an “othered,” monstrous identity, the performer becomes the surrogate victim. The fifth chapter will entail an examination of Peter van Heerden‟s 6 Minutes. I will attempt to draw parallels between performance art and ritual through using this performance piece as a case study. I will focus on the strategies that Van Heerden implements to resist theatrical representation. 6 Minutes will be observed in terms of its link to sacrificial ritual, and it presentation of the live, and the Real. In light of these discoveries, I aim to locate performance art within politically-driven modes of art-making, and how such an endeavour relates to South African modes of theatre and performance.

Cette thèse analyse les notions dialectiques incarnées dans Jane Eyre et dans Wuthering Heights afin d’éclairer les phénomènes dialectiques littéraires, sociopolitiques, et/ou subjectifs présents dans les deux romans. Le mot “dialectique,” approprié dans cette recherche, porte au moins trois connotations: étymologique, marxiste et kristévane. D’abord, la perspective dialectique est appelée à analyser les formes littéraires rivales, le romantisme rémanent et le victorianisme dominant, qui convergent vers la grande ligne de démarcation poétique dans les deux romans. Puis, en faisant référence au concept de l’interpellation et à la notion des “Deux Nations” qui caractérise la société victorienne, cette thèse s’engage dans une interprétation dialectique sur l’interaction entre le sujet et l’idéologie dominante afin d’explorer comment les idéologies du « getting on » et du « self-help » à l’ère victorienne influencent les vies de la famille Brontë, comment les deux romancières reflètent ces valeurs sociopolitiques dominantes dans leurs créations de Jane Eyre et de Heathcliff, et comment les sœurs Brontë dépeignent la lutte et le pèlerinage à travers lesquels le héros et l’héroïne transcendent le fossé social qui reste posé entre les deux nations. Finalement, fondée sur l’héréthique de Julia Kristeva, cette thèse enquête sur l’identification Heathcliff-Catherine en l’interprétant comme une autre éthique de subjectivité. Globalement, la thèse met en lumière trois niveaux remarquables de significations dialectiques des palimpsestes brontëens en dévoilant la profondeur de leur art. / This doctoral thesis analyzes the dialectic notions incarnated in Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights so as to shed light on the literary, sociopolitical, and/or subjective dialectic phenomena epitomized in the two novels. The word “dialectic,” appropriated in this research, carries at least three connotations: etymological, Marxist and Kristevan. At first, the dialectic perspective is drawn on to analyze the rival literary forms, the residual Romanticism and the dominant Victorianism, that converge at the great divide of poetics in the two novels in a similar yet subtly different manner. Then, referring to the concept of interpellation and the notion of the “Two Nations” that so well characterizes the Victorian society, the thesis engages in a dialectic interpretation of the interaction between the subject and the dominant ideology of his/her time with an aim to explore how the “getting on” and “self-help” ideologies of the Victorian age influence the lives of the Brontë family, how Charlotte and Emily Brontë reflect the dominant sociopolitical values in the creation of Jane Eyre and Heathcliff, and how the Brontë sisters depict the struggle and pilgrimage through which their hero and heroine transcend the social chasm that lies between the Two Nations. At last, based on the herethics of Julia Kristeva, this dissertation probes into the Heathcliff-Catherine identification and interprets it as an otherwise ethics of subjectivity. Altogether, the thesis scrapes three significant layers of the Brontëan palimpsests of dialectic significations and lays bare the profundity of their art.

Analysis of histwoworks has shown the most obvious indicators of intertextuality such as allusions, quotations and references.

ABSTRACT An attempt to put the horror writer H. P. Lovecraft on the map of psychoanalytical criticism, this analysis examines Lovecraft’s use of setting, characters, and narrative mode and structure in “The Call of Cthulhu” (1926) to show how his construction of horror has its ground in psychology, or, more specifically, in ideas of identity and violated boundaries of the self. In addition, brief reflections on Modernist art, its connections with psychoanalysis, and its analogies to Lovecraftian imagery are provided in order to show the echoes of the Zeitgeist in Lovecraft’s horrors. Uppsatsens syfte är att visa hur litteratur kan läsas och skrivas autistiskt. Att läsa en text innebär att vi avkodar och tolkar diskursen med hjälp av våra personliga referensramar. Med hjälp av olika litteraturteoretikers begrepp belyser denna uppsats att det finns skillnader i avkodningen baserat på kognitiva färdigheter och här främst svårigheter påverkade av autismspektrumsstörningar.        Genom en kvalitativ textanalys av Jeanette Wintersons verk Lighthousekeeping visar uppsatsen hur dessa autistiska perspektiv kan upptäckas och även användas i språket. Julia Kristevas begreppsdefinition gällande semiotisk tolkning är en stöttepelare i analysen vilket även Victor Sklovskijs begrepp främmandegöring och Roman Jakobsons teorier kring litterär afasi är.        Analysens slutsats är att det autistiska kan nyttjas för att berika tolkningsvariationerna och estetiskt förändra språket från prosaiskt till mer poetiskt. De autistiska språkgreppen som kan utläsas i Jeanette Wintersons roman Lighthousekeeping gör att språket utmanar läsarens automatiska avkodning och agerar därmed förfrämligande.

Identité, déplacement et différence dans trois textes autobiographiques féminins

Les récits autobiographiques modernes se distinguent par leur hétérogénéité non seulement entre eux rnais à l’intérieur de chaque texte. Trois textes, de facture autobiographique équivoque, ont été choisis comme objets de cette étude parce qu’ils illustrent cette hétérogénéité inter/intra-textuelle. La Détresse et l’enchantement, de Gabrielle Roy, représente le récit autobiographique supposérnent conventionnel, garantissant la ‘véracité’ de son discours narratif par un certain pacte de lecture; pourtant ce texte révèle une dimension romanesque. Les Mots pour le dire, par contre, récit à saveur de confidence de Marie Cardinal, est ambivalent dès le départ quant à son statut: ii bascule entre des éléments romancés et les souvenirs vérifiables, “événements vécus”, selon l’auteure. Enfin, Les Samourals, roman à clefs de Julia Kristeva, s’éloigne du récit-mémoires, rnais est lu comme une autobiographie à peine voilée à cause des éléments correspondant à la vie de l’auteure. La juxtaposition de ces trois récits montre que chaque texte se situe à un point mobile sur un spectrum entre deux pôles également impossibles à circonscrire—la fiction ou la ‘vérité’ pure. La fonction plutôt que la structure ou le style du texte importe ici; esthétique dans le cas de Roy, thérapeutique chez Cardinal et critique pour Kristeva. L’autobiographie romancée, genre hybride ou “métissé”, est privilégiée par ces écrivaines, toutes les trois déplacées géographiquement et linguistiquement, ayant vécu un “métissage” culturel. Le déplacement, associé à l’étrangeté, intervient dans le récit et dans la narration pour engendrer un rnouvement discursif où la différence entre le même et l’autre, entre l’ici et l’ailleurs, étoffe la structure du texte. Les trois écrivaines choisissent d’écrire en français, mais se considèrent étrangères à la France. Pour ces femmes, leur ‘féminité’ (aussi bien que leur exil) entre en jeu dans leur projet autobiographique, cette double altérité se prolongeant dans l’aliénation du moi/elle que produit la dimension fictive du récit. L’analyse de ces trois récits montrera d’abord comment la fiction s’immisce nécessairement dans le discours du ‘moi’ dédoublé et finit par imposer une texture/un métissage inhérent et essentiel à sa facture. Par ailleurs, l’altérité, envisagée sous le jour de l’étrangeté des autres et de soi—même, prend une importance capitale dans le projet identitaire de ces auteures expatriées. Enfin, l’écriture de ces trois femrnes conscientes de leur féminité s’avère aussi individuelle que celle des autobiographes masculins. Les trois parlent de leur rapport à la mère/la maternité, mais leurs récits révélent des divergences marquées par leur milieu, leur contexte socio—historique et leur relation à la psychanalyse. Le passé qu’elles évoquent est simple, imparfait ou composé, selon la fonction gui prime dans le texte. The diploma thesis Milan Kundera and Intertextuality deals with aspects of relations between the texts in his novels. The first part outlines the intertextuality, theory of the novel and the approaches of some literary theorists towards this issue. The second half of the thesis analyzes the intertextuality in Kundera's works in various forms, mainly based on the themes of dreams and physicality. The greatest emphasis is placed on examining the legacy of Kafka in the context of Kundera's works, particularly in the novels The Joke and The Book of Laughter and Forgetting.
