Communication is a critical success factor to information systems development (ISD) projects. Intercultural communication involves two or more people from diverse cultures communication and using different worldviews and context transmit messages to each other. The aim of this study is to gain an understanding on the influence of the intercultural communication on the performance of an ISD team. In order to achieve this aim one needs to understand information systems research and to justify the selection of the chosen research methodology; to understand information systems development and ISD teams; to understand culture and communication; to understand what affects communication has between different cultures; to discover how cultural misunderstandings impact upon ISD team performance and to discover the steps taken to eliminate miscommunication due to cultural issues in organizations.
The interpretive research was carried out in several organizations in Gauteng province of South Africa that develop or has a department that develops information systems. A multiple case study using interviews and content analysis as research methods were instrumental in coming to the conclusion of the research. A multicultural dyad conducted interviews in three participating organizations. Diverse information systems development team members participated in this study.
The results of the study describe how intercultural communication influences ISD teams in a South African environment. They also provide an understanding on culture and communication. The results of the study also report on culture and personality as determinants of behaviour, and also on different perceptions of culture. The different ISD team dynamics may be affected by team members’ culture and personality. Die Kubaanse komponis Leo Brouwer (1939- ) het ʼn unieke idiomatiek vir die kitaar ontwikkel wat met die eerste oogopslag ingewikkeld lyk (en klink), maar steeds logies is en gemaklik onder die vingers lê. In hierdie mini-verhandeling word Brouwer in konteks geplaas met ontwikkelings in Kuba. Biografiese agtergrond van sy lewe word verskaf, en sy werke word in drie komposisiefases verdeel. ENGLISH : The Cuban composer Leo Brouwer (1939- ) developed an idiomatic writing style for the classical guitar which is an important factor when the difficult technical requirements of the guitar are taken into consideration. This idiomatic writing style might seem (and sound) complex at first glance, but is in fact logical and easily accessible on the instrument. In this mini-dissertation Brouwer is placed in context with political and artistic development in Cuba. Biographical background of his life is given, and his works are divided into three compositional periods. Each period is discussed separately with the focus on the following solo guitar works: <ul> <li>Danza Caracteristica (1972)</li> <li>Elogio de la Danza (1964)</li> <li>10 Etudes Simples (1973)</li> <li>Canticuum (1968)</li> <li>La Espiral Eterna (1971)</li> <li>El Decameron Negro (1982)</li> <li>Paisaje Cubano con Campañas (1987)</li> <li>Sonata (1990)</li> </ul> These solo guitar works is discussed mostly in terms of compositional techniques and notation. Brouwer’s development as a composer is highlighted, and his influence on guitar composers and guitarists is discussed. As a conclusion it is shown that the idiomatic writing style of Brouwer plays a leading role in his approach to solo guitar composition. The aim of the study was to determine the impact of the application of a dynamic assessment technique of questioning with children, with projection testing. A qualitative research design were used within a postmodern epistomology, using three case studies in the quest for answering the research question. Possible cultural influences pertaining to the research situation, analysis and interpretation of responses has been taken into account. A test-training-test situation has been created during the generation of data, while assessment of projection was executed. Data analises and interpretation took place in two phases, the first phase being the projection analysis and the second phase the structural analysis of the stories. Magister Educationis - MEd / In Suid-Afrikaanse skole word op 'n gereelde grondslag gevind dat nie alle leerlinge baat vind by gewone groeponderrig soos dit in die gewone klaskamer vergestalting vind nie. Enersyds is daar die groep wat op Buitengewone Onderwys aangewese is, en andersyds is daar die groep wat nie vir buitengewone onderwys kwalifiseer nie, maar nog steeds nie die mas in die gewone klas kan opkom nie. Laasgenoemde maak dikwels deel uit van 'n sosio-ekonomies of polities benadeelde groep en die grootste persentasie druipelinge en vroeë skoolverlaters, in vergelyking met die res van die skoolbevolking , kom uit die groep. Die swak akademiese prestasies van hierdie leerlinge word in die meeste literatuur gekoppel aan kognitiewe benadeeldheid. Opvoedkundige Sielkunde. Kognitiewe benadeeldheid word vir die doel van hierdie mini-tesis gelykgestel aan kulturele benadeeldheid, maar dit word gekoppel aan die definisie van Feuerstein wat dit beskou as 'n gebrek aan bemiddelde leerervaring (BLE). Te midde van 'n strewe na sosio-ekonomiese, politieke en opvoedkundige rekonstruksie in Suid-Afrika, is dit belangrik dat probleme met skolastiese prestasie op die intermediêre vlak aangespreek word. Alhoewel skole weinig kan doen om 'n radikale verandering in die omgewingstoestande van leerlinge teweeg te bring, kan dit egter 'n groot bydrae lewer in die ontwikkeling

Om hierdie belangrike funksie te vervul, is ditnoodsaaklik dat onderwysers in hul voorbereiding vir hul taak deeglik toegerus moet word met gepaste teoretiese begronding, asook daaruitvloeiende maatreëls om kognitiewe benadeeldheid by hul leerlinge effektief te verklaar en te bekamp. Die fokus in hierdie mini-tesis is op die benadering ten opsigte van kognitiewe benadeeldheid by primêre skool leerlinge in die opleidingsprogramme - spesifiek die Opvoedkundesillabusse - van onderwyskolleges van die Departement van Onderwys en Kultuur, Raad van Verteenwoordigers (DOK:RV); en die Departement van Onderwys en Opleiding (DOO), asook ontwikkelinge op die gebied van kognitiewe onderwys in Suid-Afrika. Op grond van die leemtes in die betrokke opleidingsprogramme is die doel van hierdie mini-tesis om BLE as noodsaaklike komponent in die opleidingsprogram van primêre skoolonderwysers in Suid- Afrika aan te beveel.

AFRIKAANS : Heelwat artikels in dagblaaie, kerkkoerante en ander publikasies in verband met die NG Kerk skep die indruk dat die NG Kerk ‘n krisistyd beleef. Die krisisse wat aan die orde gestel word, hou onder andere verband met die volgende:<ul> <li>‘n identiteitskrisis omtrent spiritualiteit;</li> <li>onduidelikheid oor etiese kwessies;</li> <li>spanning ten opsigte van die kultuur-politieke rol van die NG Kerk en gepaardgaande konflik oor kerkhereniging; </li> <li>die neo-liberale verbruikerskultuur se uitdagings aan die NG Kerk waarop dit nie noodwendig voorbereid is nie. </li></ul> Dit is egter opmerklik dat die NG Kerk tog ook die nuwe millennium met nuwe visie en ywer benader in ‘n soeke na kontekstuele en religieuse relevansie. Daar is min twyfel dat die resente stand van die NG Kerk kompleks is. Dit kan moontlik toegeskryf word aan ‘n verskeidenheid historiese vormingsagente wat die veelvuldige en uiteenlopende kerklike fenomene ten grondslag lê. Vir ander het dit ‘n belewenis van onsekerheid en wanhoop gebring. Die polities-kulturele situasie is egter nie al wat verander het nie. Die verandering in Suid-Afrika word ook omvat deur veranderende sosiale denke en -gedrag. Hierdie nuwe manier van dink en doen verteenwoordig die postmoderne paradigma. Toenemende sekularisasie is ook waarneembaar. Die NG Kerk staan binne die invloedsfeer van hierdie gebeure. Die nuwe politieke en kulturele situasie het implikasies vir die identiteit van die NG Kerk. Die verandering van wêreldbeskouings bring ook uitdagings wat vormend inwerk op die selfverstaan van die NG Kerk. Die begrip wat die kerk vir die betekenis van hierdie gebeure toon, sal bepaal waartoe die NG Kerk in toekoms verander. / ENGLISH : Many newspapers, church newspapers and other publications report that a crisis is immanent in the Dutch Reformed Church today. The crisis is seen in the incidence of the following: <ul> <li>an identity crisis concerning spirituality; </li> <li>ambiguity about ethical matters;</li> <li>tension over the DR Church’s cultural and political role in South Africa as well as conflict over church unity with the members of the DRC family;</li> <li>the fact that the DR Church is caught offhanded by the challenges of the neo-liberal consumer culture. </li></ul> It must be said that despite this crisis, there are signs of the DR Church seeking contextual and religious relevance in the new millennium. There is little doubt that the recent state of affairs in the DR Church is complicated. The reason can be ascribed to a variety of historical incidents that underlie the numerous and diverse phenomena in the church. Against the background of the South African history, the history of the DR Church should be studied. This way it is possible to identify the causality and cohesion of historical events and phenomena. This process could help to give meaning to the recent situation and context of the DR Church. Since 1990 the political and cultural situation in South Africa has changed radically. People reacted differently to this change. For some it was the long-anticipated outcome of years of political struggle. For others it has brought uncertainty and despair. But this was not the only change since 1990. The change in South Africa is encompassed by a new way of social thinking and behaviour, which represents what is known as the postmodern paradigm. Secularisation of everyday life and institutions is also escalating. The DR Church stands within the sphere of influence of these phenomena. The new political and cultural situation has implications for the identity of the DR Church. The postmodern paradigm brings challenges for the way in which the DR Church understands itself as a church and its mission within the South African context. Modern juristic persons often are powerful entities and they play an influential role in society. Their activities are often accompanied by serious transgressions that have a severely detrimental impact on human beings and their environment. The effective prosecution of juristic persons is therefore necessary. The juridical foundations of the liability of juristic persons are, however, one of the most controversial issues in criminal law theory.
Individualistic theories postulate that juristic persons are merely collections of individuals. The conduct and fault of individuals constituting a juristic person must therefore form the basis of the criminal liability of the juristic person. In the United States, for instance, the foundation for the criminal liability of corporations on federal level is vicarious liability. Another individualistic model (mostly associated with English common law jurisdictions) is the so–called doctrine of identification. Only the conduct of individuals who are regarded as the 'directing minds' of the organisation may be attributed to the organisation. These approaches deny the complex structures and decision making processes that exist especially in big corporate entities.
According to realistic theories juristic persons are entities which are not dependant on their composite members. Each juristic person has its own unique personality. The culture and ethos of a juristic person influence the conduct of individuals attached to it as well as the degree in which the juristic person abides by the law. The identity of a corporation can be established by investigating the internal structure thereof. The existence of monitoring mechanisms and educational programmes within the organization, as well as the degree to which the organisation condones or disapproves of unlawful conduct, are some of the factors which may be indicative of the corporate culture. This approach is a development of the late twentieth century and has recently been adopted in the legislation of some foreign legal systems, most notably Australia.
Section 332(1) of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977 provides the basis for the criminal liability of juristic persons in South Africa. In essence the conduct and fault of functionaries (and sometimes even outsiders) are attributed to the juristic person. In terms of the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Act juristic persons may only be fined upon conviction. This approach reflects the individualistic view of corporate criminal liability. In this study recommendations are made for the purpose of improving the South African law in this regard so as to reflect a more realistic approach. The recommendations are based on an examination of realistic models proposed by legal and social theorists and legislation adopted by foreign countries which are based on these theories. Old Batswana persons' experience of loneliness : applying the Mmogo–methodTM / Carlien KahlKahl, Carlien January 2010 (has links)
Ageing in Africa and the world over is a phenomenon that affects individuals and societies. The expanding older population (people aged 60+) in South Africa led to this research, which represents an attempt to explore the experiences of loneliness of older persons in Africa and thereby gain some understanding of the subjective experiences of loneliness of a group of older African persons in their socio–cultural context.
Defining loneliness from the existing literature was challenging since it became evident that loneliness in the literature is defined and researched largely in terms of individual meanings attached to the concept, and the applicability of such individual meanings to an African context remains unconfirmed. Experiences of loneliness are not well known among older Setwana–speaking persons, and few studies have focused on collectivistic experiences as such. Loneliness is considered a complex, contextual experience that goes beyond the individual and also includes culture as an inseparable aspect of people’s lives. Conceptualising loneliness as a socially constructed phenomenon places this study within the paradigm of phenomenology exploring people’s experiences. The philosophy of ubuntu relates to being in the world among others thus creating the concept of a social self. In essence, to be a self, one has to belong to a community, and one is always contextualised as an existence among others in interaction.
A qualitative design was used together with a purposive convenience sampling method whereby the participants were selected on the basis of their availability during the research period. The participants’ ages ranged from 61 up to 73, and the sample included 16 female and two male participants. Two data sets were collected at different times from members of the Day Care Centre for the Aged in Ikageng, Potchefstroom, South Africa, as well as community residents who did not attend the centre.
Various qualitative techniques were used to collect the data including the Mmogo–methodTM, in–depth individual interviews and focus groups. Multiple methods were employed for analysing the data including phenomenological analysis, key–words–in–context and analysis strategies as stipulated by the Mmogo–methodTM. The rigour of the data was enhanced through the use of diverse qualitative data–gathering methods as well as an array of qualitative analysis methods in a process known as crystallisation. Ethical approval was granted by the Ethics Committee of the North–West University, Potchefstroom Campus, under a larger project, “An exploration of enabling contexts (05K14)”.
The researchers constructed two main themes from the findings: descriptions of loneliness and coping with loneliness. Loneliness related to the self and to others, and coping with loneliness involved actively engaging with the environment, being with others and using coping strategies. Some of the findings are linked to the existing literature, and some are unique relating to being with others and including social embeddedness as a multi–layered phenomenon connected to experiences of loneliness - it is here where the literature falls short in clarifying the findings within our context. Suggestions are made for future research, and some of the limitations of the study are pointed out.

Exploring the authenticity of the tourist experience in culture heritage tourism in South Africa / Milena IvanovicIvanovic, Milena January 2011 (has links)
The research question addressed by this dissertation is: How is the tourist experience
formed and what constitutes the authenticity of the tourist experience for two market
segments (motivated and not motivated by learning) of tourists visiting (political) cultural
heritage sites in South Africa. The study explores the correlation between three types of
authenticity, namely objective, constructed and existential on two independent tourist
samples, motivated and not motivated by learning.
This research was initiated for three reasons. The first reason forms part of the research
problem; South African cultural experiences received the lowest ratings from the
international tourists despite the fact that culture and heritage play a role in reimaging
South Africa from Big 5 destination into ‘It’s possible’ and ‘Leave ordinary behind’. It was
suspected that not all types of cultural heritage products justify such a low ratings,
especially not the political cultural heritage sites South Africa is famous for. The second
reason emerged from the academic literature on authenticity theories and calls from the
influential group of postmodernist scholars to declare the objective authenticity obsolete
and replace it with the existential authenticity. The argument that; the hyperreal nature of
the postmodern experience and its detachment from reality makes the authenticity of the
site redundant, seemed inapt for cultural heritage sites exclusively dependent on their
historical and authentic values. The third reason was the inability of the postmodern
paradigm to explain the new tourism phenomenon driven by the tourists search for selfdevelopment
through authentic experiences. The new emerging paradigm, transmodernity
seemed to offer better theoretical framework in explaining the omnivorouessness of
tourists’ consumption and the authentic nature of tourist experiences.
The correlational character of the research question required a descriptive correlational
design and quantitative methodology. The selected research instrument for primary data
collection is a self–administered questionnaire. The sampling strategy is a non–probability
sampling, and the sampling method is a convenience or accidental sample. The data was
collected from November 2010 to February 2011 at the Constitutional Hill National
Heritage Site in Johannesburg. The final sample (436) consists of 254 foreign and 182
domestic tourists.
The questionnaire was designed to identify the variables pertinent to each type of
authenticity of tourists experience and of the resultant tourist experience. The data
analysis provided very interesting results. Firstly, the results of crosstabulation proved that
more than half (56%) of the tourists expressed strong agreement that the Constitution Hill
provided them with authentic experience, hence a proof that political heritage sites are not
responsible for the overall low experiential ratings of the country’s culture and heritage.
Secondly, the results of the Spearman’s correlation coefficient proved that objective
authenticity as an independent variable have strong positive correlation with constructed
and existential authenticity hence a proof that objective authenticity cannot be declared
obsolete and replaced with existential authenticity. Finally, the results of the t–test proved
that motivation for learning and place of birth do not play an important role in how tourist
evaluate and experience the authenticity of the site pointing to the omnivorous nature of
tourist consumption. In line with the transmodern paradigm, motivation for learning plays a
critical role in triggering the transformative, authentic experience distinctive of the
existential authenticity. The results of the study also showed that 32% of tourists are in
fact the purposeful, New Age, transmodern Cultural Creatives. Proposed theoretical
model of authenticity of tourists experience presents a theoretical platform for future
