Eskilstuna Fruntimmersförening : En studie av Eskilstunas första kvinnoförening mellan åren 1876-1896Aksu, Duygu Selin January 2014 (has links)
Throughout the course of the 19th century mankind experienced a lot of changes to the way they were used to live life, mostly due to the expansion of the industrial revolution. But the biggest change was perhaps the change in the conditions for women all over the world. Women no longer wanted to live their lives behind closed doors looking out from the window and thinking of all the things that they could have done with their lives. They wanted to be a part of society and they, sometimes literally, fought for change. In Sweden women got the right to vote in 1921. The way there was long and difficult with a lot of obstacles and prejudice to overcome. But not all of the associations had voting rights for women on their agenda. Some of them were strictly philanthropic. After reading Eva Österberg’s book “Rummet vidgas”, where she discusses her theory about 19th century women in Sweden and the “closed room” that used to be their arena of movement and its expansion during the 19th century, I decided to do a research in my hometown and therefor took a closer look at the first association started by women in 1854 in the little town of Eskilstuna, 90 km from Stockholm. The association was started by a few leading women and their goal was to help the less fortunate children of the community with clothes and shoes so they could attend school and later on be useful members of the society. In doing so the women themselves took their rightful place in the public society. The women were very successful, they achieved well more than they had set out for and the association managed to exist for over a hundred years helping thousands of children.

Aktiva fredskvinnor : En mikrohistorisk studie över Internationella Kvinnoförbundet för Fred och Frihet i Växjö 1935-1967 / Active Women for Peace.Andersson, Ann-Marie January 2021 (has links)
Abstract This microhistorical study examines the local circle of Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom in Växjö during the years 1935 to 1967. The purpose of the essay is to contribute to research in women’s history by describing and analyzing some of the association’s members and activities. The unprinted source material consisting of the association’s protocol books provides the basis for this study. The theoretical basis is a gender perspective and a microhistorical perspective. Short biographies highlight the background and roles of the individual members in the association. The association’s organization and activities are described too. The analysis shows the members’ solidarity with other women, for instance through helping refugees. It also shows how the members used their economic, social and cultural capital in their peace efforts, and in forming networks both among themselves and with other organisations. In short, the members’ economic, social and cultural capital enabled them to work for peace. In their efforts they both came to challenge and maintain the gender system of their time.

Den kvinnliga konstnärens övergång från amatör till professionell i Italien under början av 1900-talet. : De första kvinnliga utställningarna och en studie om Tyra Kleens nätverksrelation i Rom.Castrenzi, Chiara January 2022 (has links)
The essay describes the transition of female artists from amateur to professional through an analysis of female participation in professional exhibitions during the early 20th century in Italy. Specifically, it examines the history of the Società delle Artiste, the group of pioneers who want to identify themselves in the field of professional art, and the first two exclusively women's international exhibitions organized in Italy. Furthermore, this study contains the analysis of part of the Swedish artist Tyra Kleen's correspondence with two exponents of the Italian cultural elite, Arnaldo Cervesato and Sibilla Aleramo. The method of analysis used is discourse analysis in combination with Pierre Bourdieu's theory of cultural fields. The study identifies the factors behind the change in the status of female artists in Italy as a product of the influence of the phenomenon of female associations as promoters of the "new woman" and her social positioning as a useful and functional element in general modern renewal. The analysis of Tyra Kleen's correspondence confirms the importance of the relational network required for a female artist in Italy to establish herself and identifies the connections to the sphere of women's associations.

This thesis on the Swedish voluntary women’s defence organisation Riksförbundet Sveriges lottakårer (SLK), studies how the board and the members of SLK discussed the problems and the meaning of voluntary defence work during the 1960s and 1970s. Furthermore the thesis aims to engage with previous research and give an explanation to why people may be interested in voluntary defence. Views varied greatly within SLK: some meant that the voluntary grounds of participation gave a sense of elite status to the organisation; however others saw voluntary work as untenable, since more women at the time had both work and family obligations. Another issue was professionalisation versus socialisation. While some members wanted to see a centralisation and professionalisation of the organisation, others found it more important to safeguard the social functions and independence of the local corps unit. The results suggest that gender structures as well as individual agency create multiple reasons and meanings behind voluntary defence work.
