Living with Wildfire: Homeowners' Firewise Guide for Arizona

Jones, Christopher, Rogstad, Alix, Campbell, Stephen, Peters, David, Aylor, Dustie, Pearlberg, Clifford, Wood, Judith, Peacock, Wendell, Elek, Arthur January 2007 (has links)
20 pp. / Arizona Firewise Communities / This publication is an update and adaptation of the widely distributed Living with Fire publication created by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and Sierra Front Wildfire Cooperators in 1998. It is an interagency collaboration of the Arizona Firewise subcommittee of the Arizona Interagency Coordinating Group. It involved the combined efforts of the Arizona State Land Department, USDI Bureau of Indian Affairs, USDI Bureau of Land Management, USDI National Park Service, USDA Forest Service, USDI Fish and Wildlife Service, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, University of Arizona Cooperative Extension and Arizona Fire Chiefs Association. The need to revise the over seven-year old publication emerged from the subcommittees vision of building in concepts such as Firewise Zone Landscaping and Survivable Space, as well as to update the documents appearance and organization. Its purpose to provide a quality outreach tool to increase public aware concerning Firewise concepts and to encourage and facilitate the implementation of Firewise practices by communities, neighborhoods and property owners. Living with Wildfire is a twelve-page color tabloid that addresses the following topic areas important to homeowners: current situation; fire behavior and the human environment, and in various Arizona vegetation types; detailed recommendations for creating survivable space, including a checklist and landscape management zones; frequently asked questions; and emergency and evacuation guidelines. The tabloid is to be printed in bulk by federal partners and made widely available throughout the state over the next several years.

Biodiversité spécifique et fonctionnelle des berges de cours d'eau : caractérisation des ouvrages de protection de berges suivant un gradient de "naturalité" / Riverbanks specific and fonctionnal biodiversity : a characterization of riverbank protection works depending on a naturality gradient

Cavaille, Paul 26 June 2014 (has links)
Riverbanks are interfaces (or ecotones) between terrestrial and aquatic areas, they have a great biodiversity for both flora and fauna. Riverbanks also contribute to the set up of the biological corridor for vertebrates and invertebrates migrations. The increasing human impact on these environments often leads to their stabilization using several bank protection techniques. These techniques are many and varied. Some techniques are purely mineral and only consist of concrete or rock; others consist entirely of organic or even living materials (Geotextiles, cuttings, woody stakes...). Finally, some works are identified as "mixed" and they combine mineral (stones, blocs...) and alive materials. The material constitution and their implementation will affect the biodiversity of each riverbank work. This study aims to quantify and analyze the taxonomic and functional biodiversity of the riverbank works in order to improve our understanding of the ecological functioning of these anthropogenic areas and associated ecosystem services. In this work, we surveyed taxonomic and functional diversities of vascular land plants, flying and ground beetles and benthic macroinvertebrates supported on each riverbank and according to bank management type. These results have been benchmarked with subnatural low willow stand banks taken as control banks. We show that techniques stemmed from bioengineering lead to significantly larger plant and animal, taxonomic and functional diversity, than those surveyed on riverbanks stemmed from civil engineering. On the other hand, interspecific competition on the bioengineering techniques limits the development and invasion of plant species neophytes. Finally, community structures and functioning of terrestrial and aquatic organisms are largely dependent on the riverbank technique and associated biotic and abiotic conditions.

Still, Brazilian exports of flowers and ornamental plants still have values below that are generated internationally by major countries active in the sector. One reason of imports in Brazil are high, it is precisely the lack of trained personnel to work in the activity. Even with the growth in research, automation; there is still the need to use specialized hand labor mainly in the post-harvest treatment, since it is a delicate material nature. The international market of Floriculture is also characterized by the frequent release of new plants to meet the consumer interest in colors and different shapes. In this ornamental trade there is a great demand for foliage and complemented for the ornamental sector with cut flowers. The lack of new products in this line has been worldwide. The lack of new products in this line has been worldwide. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the growth of Solenostemon scutellarioides species known as coleus, emphasizing its role as ornamental cut foliage. The work was divided into stages: 1) was first made the planting of 30 stakes 7cm in vessels with volume 500dm³ to obtain seedlings and development of a framework for notes visual assessment of the following experiments. 2) After growth, the cutting rods 30 are held, where 10 were placed in water at 10 Salicylic acid (10mM) and 10 in the refrigerator for observation for conservation and storage. 3) with the rods which remained in the vessel, it is regeneration by growth analysis: measurement of the diameter, number of leaves, leaf area, plant height. 4) was then done two tests compared to 10 rods in the refrigerator, and 5 in sealed plastic bag with a damp paper towel and plastic bag 5 with no paper towels. 5) to finish was made to light compared with 6 vessels each treatment: shade, partial shade and full sun. Data were released in Excel 2016, there was analysis of variance (ANOVA), Tukey 5% and Kruskal-Wallis. For number of sheets, height, diameter and leaf area results were significant according to the time; where growth occurred more rapidly during the early regeneration. As for the storage experiment and Conservation (item 2), there was a statistically significant difference, where the stems placed in water and cooling are statistically equal, but different from the rods in salicylic acid, and the note of this is smaller than the other. In the experiment with cooling (item 4) and experiment with light (item 5), it was not observed 5% statistical significance. It was therefore concluded that the Solenostemon scutellarioides species, has rapid regeneration with satisfactory development, being a species with good adaptation indoors and open, l and good conservation in water and can be used in landscaping and ornamental flower arrangements.
