Large Eddy Simulation of Free and Impinging Subsonic Jets and their Sound Fields

Evaluating aerodynamic noise from aircraft engines is a design stage process, so that it conform to regulations at airports. Aerodynamic noise is also a principal source of structural vibration and internal noise in short/vertical take off and landing and rocket launches. Acoustic loads may be critical for the proper functioning of electronic and mechanical components. It is imperative to have tools with capability to predict noise generation from turbulent flows. Understanding the mechanism of noise generation is essential in identifying methods for noise reduction. Lighthill (1952) and Lighthill (1954) provided the first explanation for the mechanism of aerodynamic noise generation and a procedure to estimate the radiated sound field. Many such procedures, known as acoustic analogies are used for estimating the radiated sound field in terms of the turbulent fluid flow properties. In these methods, the governing equations of the fluid flow are rearranged into two parts, the acoustic sources and the propagation terms. The noise source terms and propagation terms are different in different approaches. A good description of the turbulent flow field and the noise sources is required to understand the mechanism of noise generation. Computational aeroacoustics (CAA) tools are used to calculate the radiated far field noise. The inputs to the CAA tools are results from CFD simulations which provide details of the turbulent flow field and noise sources. Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) solutions can be used as inputs to CAA tools which require only time-averaged mean quantities. The output of such tools will also be mean quantities. While complete unsteady turbulent flow details can be obtained from Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS), the computation is limited to low or moderate Reynolds number flows. Large eddy simulations (LES) provide accurate description for the dynamics of a range of large scales. Most of the kinetic energy in a turbulent flow is accounted by the large-scale structures. It is also the large-scale structures which accounts for the maximum contribution towards the radiated sound field. The results from LES can be used as an input to a suitable CAA tool to calculate the sound field. Numerical prediction of turbulent flow field, the acoustic sources and the radiated sound field is at the focus of this study. LES based on explicit filtering method is used for the simulations. The method uses a low-pass compact filter to account for the sub-grid scale effects. A one-parameter fourth-order compact filter scheme from Lele (1992) is used for this purpose. LES has been carried out for four different flow situations: (i) round jet (ii) plane jet (iii) impinging round jet and (iv) impinging plane jet. LES has been used to calculate the unsteady flow evolution of these cases and the Lighthill’s acoustic sources. A compact difference scheme proposed by Hixon & Turkel (1998) which involves only bi-diagonal matrices are used for evaluating spatial derivatives. The scheme provides similar spectral resolution as standard tridiagonal compact schemes for the first spatial derivatives. The scheme is computationally less intensive as it involves only bi-diagonal matrices. Also, the scheme employs only a two-point stencil. To calculate the radiated sound field, the Helmholtz equation is solved using the Green’s function approach, in the form of the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral. The integral is performed over a surface which is present entirely in the linear region and covers the volume where acoustic sources are present. The time series data of pressure and the normal component of the pressure gradient on the surface are obtained from the CFD results. The Fourier transforms of the time series of pressure and pressure gradient are then calculated and are used as input for the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral. The flow evolution for free jets is characterised by the growth of the instability waves in the shear layer which then rolls up into large vortices. These large vortical structures then break down into smaller ones in a cascade which are convected downstream with the flow. The rms values of the Lighthill’s acoustic sources showed that the sources are located mainly at regions immediately downstream of jet break down. This corresponds to the large scale structures at break down. The radiated sound field from free jets contains two components of noise from the large scales and from the small scales. The large structures are the dominant source for the radiated sound field. The contribution from the large structures is directional, mainly at small angles to the downstream direction. To account for the difference in jet core length, the far field SPL are calculated at points suitably shifted based on the jet core length. The peak value for the radiated sound field occurs between 30°and 35°as reported in literature. Convection of acoustic sources causes the radiated sound field to be altered due to Doppler effect. Lighthills sources along the shear layer were examined in the form of (x, t) plots and phase velocity pattern in (ω, k) plots to analyse for their convective speeds. These revealed that there is no unique convective speeds for the acoustic sources. The median convective velocity Uc of the acoustic sources in the shear layer is proportional to the jet velocity Uj at the center of the nozzle as Uc ≈ 0.6Uj. Simulations of the round jet at Mach number 0.9 were used for validating the LES approach. Five different cases of the round jet were used to understand the effect of Reynolds number and inflow perturbation on the flow, acoustic sources and the radiated sound field. Simulations were carried out for an Euler and LES at Reynolds number 3600 and 88000 at two different inflow perturbations. The LES results for the mean flow field, turbulence profiles and SPL directivity were compared with DNS of Freund (2001) and experimental data available in literature. The LES results showed that an increase in inflow forcing and higher Reynolds number caused the jet core length to reduce. The turbulent energy spectra showed that the energy content in smaller scale is higher for higher Reynolds number. LES of plane jets were carried out for two different cases, one with a co-flow and one without co-flow. LES of plane jets were carried out to understand the effect of co-flow on the sound field. The plane jets were of Mach number 0.5 and Reynolds number of 3000 based on center-line velocity excess at the nozzle. This is similar to the DNS by Stanley et al. (2002). It was identified that the co-flow leads to a reduction in turbulence levels. This was also corroborated by the turbulent energy spectrum plots. The far field radiation for the case without co-flow is higher over all angles. The contribution from the low frequencies is directional, mainly towards the downstream direction. The range of dominant convective velocities of the acoustic sources were different along shear layers and center-line. The plane jet results were also used to bring out a qualitative comparison of flow and the radiation characteristics with round jets. For the round jet, the center-line velocity decays linearly with the stream-wise distance. In the plane jet case, it is the square of the center-line velocity excess which decays linearly with the stream-wise distance. The turbulence levels at any section scales with the center-line stream-wise velocity. The decay of turbulence level is slower for the plane jet and hence the acoustic sources are present for longer distance along the downstream direction. Subsonic impinging jets are composed of four regions, the jet core, the fully developed jet, the impingement zone and the wall jet. The presence of the second region (fully developed free jet) depends on the distance of the wall from the nozzle and the length of the jet core. In impinging jets, reflection from the wall and the wall jet are additional sources of noise compared to the free jets. The results are analysed for the contribution of the different regions of the flow towards the radiated sound field. LES simulations of impinging round jets and impinging plane jet were carried out for this purpose. In addition, the results have been compared with equivalent free jets. The directivity plots showed that the SPL levels are significantly higher for the impinging jets at all angles. For free jets, a typical time scale for the acoustic sources is the ratio of the nozzle size to the jet velocity. This is ro/Uj for round jets and h/Uj for plane jets. For impinging jets, the non-dimensionlised rms of Lighthill’s source indicates that the time scale for acoustic sources is the ratio of the height of the nozzle from the wall to the jet velocity be L/Uj. LES of impinging round jets was carried out for two cases with different inflow perturbations. The jets were at Reynolds number of 88000 and Mach number of 0.9, same as the free jet cases. The impingement wall was at a distance L = 24ro from the nozzle exit. For impinging round jets, the SPL levels are found to be higher than the equivalent free jets. From the SPL levels and radiated noise spectra it was shown that the contribution from the large scale structures and its reflection from the wall is directional and at small angles to the wall normal. The difference in the range of angles where the radiation from the large scale structures were observed shows the significance of refraction of sound waves inside the flow. The rms values of the Lighthill’s sources indicate two dominant regions for the sources, just downstream of jet breakdown and in the impingement zone. The LES of impinging plane jet was done for a jet of Mach number 0.5 and Reynolds number of 6000. The impingement wall was at a distance L = 10h from the nozzle exit. The radiated sound field appears to emanate from this impingement zone. The directivity and the spectrum plots of the far field SPL indicate that there is no preferred direction of radiation from the impingement zone. The Lighthill’s sources are concentrated mainly in the impingement zone. The rms values of the sources indicate that the peak values occur in the impingement zone. The results from the different flow situations demonstrates the capability of LES with explicit filtering method in predicting the turbulent flow and radiated noise field. The method is robust and has been successfully used for moderate Reynolds number and an Euler simulation. An important feature is that LES can be used to identify acoustic sources and its convective speeds. It has been shown that the Lighthill source calculations, the calculated sound field and the observed radiation patterns agree well. An explanation for these based on the different turbulent flow structures has also been provided.

Multiscale modelling of atmospheric flows: towards improving the representation of boundary layer physics

Atmospheric boundary layer flows are characterized by the coexistence of a broad range of scales. These scales cover from synoptic- (100-5000 km) and meso-scales (1-100 km) up to three-dimensional micro-scale turbulence (less than a few kilometers). This multiscale nature inherent to atmospheric flows clearly determines the behaviour of the atmospheric boundary layer, whose structure and evolution are of major importance for the wind energy community. This PhD thesis is focused on the development of a numerical methodology that allows to include contribution from all the above mentioned scales, with the purpose of improving the representation of boundary layer processes. The multiscale numerical methodology is developed based on a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model.<p><p>Prior to the development of the multiscale numerical methodology, one-year of sonic anemometer and wind LiDAR measurements from the FINO1 offshore platform are analyzed. A comprehensive database of offshore measurements in the lowest 250 m of the boundary layer is developed after quality data check and correction for flow distortion effects by the measurement mast, allowing the characterization of the offshore conditions at FINO1. Spectral analysis of high frequency sonic anemometer measurements is used to estimate a robust averaing time for the turbulent fluxes that minimizes non-universal contributions from mesoscale structures but captures the contribution from boundary layer turbulence, employing the Ogive function concept. A stability classification of the measurements is carried out based on the Obukhov length. Results compare well to other surface layer observational studies while vertical wind speed profiles exhibit the expected stability-dependency.<p><p>Although NWP models have been extensively used for weather forecasting purposes, a comprehensive analysis of its suitability to meet the wind energy requirements needs to be carried out. The applicability of the WRF mesoscale model to reproduce offshore boundary layer characteristics is evaluated and validated against field measurements from FINO1. The ability of six planetary boundary layer (PBL) parameterizations to account for stability effects is analyzed. Overall, PBL parameterizations are rather accurate in reproducing the vertical structure of the boundary layer for convective and neutral stabilities. However, difficulties are found under stable stratifications, due to the general tendency of PBL formulations to be overdiffusive and therefore, not capable to develope the strong vertical gradients found in the observations. A low-level jet and a very shallow boundary layer cases are simulated to provide further insights into the limits of the parameterizations.<p><p>Large-eddy simulations (LES) based on averaged conditions from a convective episode at FINO1 are conducted to understand the mechanisms of transition and equilibration that occur in turbulent one-way nested simulations. The nonlinear backscatter and anisotropy subgrid scale model with a prognostic turbulent kinetic energy equation is found to be capable of providing similar results when performing one-way nested large-eddy simulations to a reference stand-alone domain using periodic lateral boundary conditions. A good agreement is obtained in terms of velocity shear and turbulent fluxes of heat and momentum, while velocity variances are overestimated. A considerable streamwise fetch is needed following each domain transition for appropriate energy levels to be reached at high wavelengths and for the solution to reach quasi-stationary results. A pile-up of energy is observed at low wavelengths on the first nested domain, mitigated by the inclusion of a second nested domain with higher resolution that allows the development of an appropriate turbulent energy cascade.<p><p>As the final step towards developing the multiscale capabilities of WRF, the specific problem of the transition from meso- to micro-scales in atmospheric models is addressed. The challenge is to generate turbulence on inner LES domain from smooth mesoscale inflow. Several new methods are proposed to trigger the development of turbulent features. The inclusion of adequate potential temperature perturbations near the inflow boundaries of the LES domain results in a very good agreement of mean velocity profiles, variances and turbulent fluxes, as well as velocity spectra, when compared to periodic stand-alone simulations. This perturbation method allows an efficient generation of fully developed turbulence and is tested under a broad range of atmospheric stabilities: convective, neutral and stable conditions, showing successful results in all the regimes. / Doctorat en Sciences de l'ingénieur / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Towards small scale sensors for turbulent flows and for rarefied gas damping

This thesis makes contributions towards the development of two different small-scale sensing systems which show promise for measurements in fluid mechanics. Well-resolved turbulent Wall Shear Stress (WSS) measurements could provide a basis for realistic computational models of near-wall turbulent flow in aerodynamic design. In aerodynamics field applications, they could provide indication of flow direction and regions of separation, enabling inputs for flight control or active control of wind-turbine blades to reduce shock and fatigue loading due to separated flow regions. Traditional thermal WSS sensors consist of a single microscale hot-film, flush-mounted with the surface and maintained at constant temperature. Their potential for fast response to small fluctuations may not be realized, as heat transfer through the substrate creates heat-exchange with fluid, leading to loss of spatial and temporal resolution. The guard-heated thermal WSS sensor is a design introduced to block this loss of resolution. A numerical flow-field with a range of length and time and scales was generated to study the response of both guard-heated and conventional single-element thermal WSS sensors. A conjugate heat transfer solution including substrate heat conduction and flow convection, provides spatiotemporal data on both the actual and the “measured” WSS fluctuations calculated from the heat transfer rates experienced due to the WSS field. For a single-element sensor in air, we found that the heat transfer through the substrate was up to six times larger than direct heat transfer from the hot-film to the fluid. The resulting loss of resolution in the single-element sensor can be largely recovered by using the guard-heated design. Spectra for calculated WSS from heat transfer response show that high frequencies are considerably better resolved in guard-heated sensors than in the single element sensor. Nanoresonators are nanowires (NWs) excited into mechanical vibration at a resonance frequency, with a change in spectral width created by gas damping from the environment, or a shift in the resonance peak frequency created by added mass. They enable a wide range of applications, from sensors to study rarefied gas flow friction to the detection of early-stage cancer. The extraordinary sensitivity of nanoresonators for disease molecule detection has been demonstrated with a few NWs, but the high cost of traditional electron-beam lithography patterning, have inhibited practical applications requiring large arrays of sensors. Field-directed assembly techniques under development in our laboratory enable a large number of devices at low cost. Electro-deposition of metals in templates yields high-quality single nanowires, but undesired clumps must be removed. This calls for separation (extraction) of single nanowires. In this work, single nanowires are extracted by using the sedimentation behavior of particles. Based on numerical and experimental analyses, the optimum time and region for extracting samples with the highest fraction of single nanowires ratio was found. We show that it is possible to take samples free of large clumps of nanowires and decrease the ratio of undesired particles to single nanowires by over one order of magnitude. / Graduate

Les interactions entre les flammes et les phénomènes thermiques sont le fil conducteur de ce travail. En effet, les flammes produisent de la chaleur, mais peuvent aussi être affectées par des transferts ou des sources de chaleur. La Simulation aux Grandes Echelles (SGE) est utilisée ici pour étudier ces interactions, en mettant l’accent sur deux sujets principaux: le transfert de chaleur aux parois et le contrôle de la combustion. Dans un premier temps, on étudie le transfert de chaleur aux parois dans un modèle de brûleur CH4/O2 de moteur-fusée. Dans un contexte deréutilisabilité et de réduction des coûts des lanceurs, qui constituent des enjeux majeurs, de nouveaux couples de propergols sont envisagés et les flux thermiques à la paroi doivent êtreprécisément prédits. Le but de ce travail est d’évaluer les besoins et les performances des SGEpour simuler ce type de configuration et de proposer une méthodologie de calcul permettant desimuler différentes configurations. Les résultats numériques sont comparés aux donnéesexpérimentales fournies par la Technische Universität München (Allemagne). Dans un deuxième temps, le contrôle de la combustion au moyen de décharges de plasma de type NRP (en anglaisNanosecond Repetitively Pulsed) est étudié. Les systèmes de turbines à gaz modernes utilisent en effet une combustion pauvre dans le but de réduire la consommation de carburant et les émissions de polluants. Les flammes pauvres sont connues pour être sujettes à des instabilités et le contrôle de la combustion peut jouer un rôle majeur dans ce domaine. Un modèle phénoménologique qui considère les décharges de plasma comme une source de chaleur est développé et appliqué à un brûleur pauvre avec prémélange CH4/Air stabilisé par un swirler. LesSGE sont réalisées afin d’évaluer les effets des décharges NRP sur la flamme. Les résultats numériques sont comparés aux observations expérimentales faites à la King Abdulla University ofScience and Technology (Arabie Saoudite) / Interactions between flames and thermal phenomena are the guiding thread of this work. In the context of launchers re-usability and cost reduction, which are major challenges,new propellant combinations are considered and wall heat fluxes have to be precisely predicted.The aim of this work is to evaluate LES needs and performances to simulate this kind ofconfiguration and provide a computational methodology permitting to simulate variousconfigurations. Numerical results are compared to experimental data provided by the TechnischeUniversität München (Germany). In a second part, combustion control by means of NanosecondRepetitively Pulsed (NRP) plasma discharges is studied. Modern gas turbine systems use indeedlean combustion with the aim of reducing fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. Lean flamesare however known to be prone to instabilities and combustion control can play a major role in thisdomain. A phenomenological model which considers the plasma discharges as a heat source isdeveloped and applied to a swirl-stabilized CH4/Air premixed lean burner. LES are performed inorder to evaluate the effects of the NRP discharges on the flame. Numerical results are comparedwith experimental observations made at the King Abdulla University of Science and Technology(Saudi Arabia).

L’étude présentée dans cette thèse relève de la mécanique des fluides expérimentale et numérique appliquée aux écoulements pariétaux de refroidissement de chambres de combustion aéronautiques. En présence de phénomènes thermo-acoustiques, comme les instabilités de combustion, il est important d’évaluer si les capacités de l’écoulement pariétal à protéger les parois de chambre restent suffisantes. C’est ainsi que nous nous sommes intéressés aux écoulements de paroi multiperforée soumis à une excitation acoustique. Dans ce but, le banc d’essais MAVERIC a été amélioré grâce à l’installation d’un système qui permet de forcer acoustiquement l’écoulement transverse dans lequel les jets pariétaux débouchent. Nous avons pu alors mettre en évidence la forte sensibilité de ce type d’écoulements à l’excitation acoustique. Le bon accord entre les résultats expérimentaux et les simulations numériques aux grandes échelles (LES) effectuées est très encourageant dans le cas d’un forçage par onde stationnaire. Le forçage par onde progressive, étudié uniquement par simulations numériques, s’est révélé être capable de modifier significativement la topologie de l’écoulement. Enfin, à partir de l’outil numérique AVBP-AVTP qui permet le couplage de calculs fluide-solide, nous avons réalisé une étude de l’influence de la présence d’une excitation acoustique sur le comportement thermique de l’écoulement autour d’une paroi multiperforée de chambre de combustion. / This experimental and numerical study in the field of fluid mechanics deals with jets-in cross flow configurations that are relevant for the cooling of aero engine combustion chambers. Indeed, in presence of instabilities it is important to determine to which extent the film cooling is able to do its job of preserving the combustion chamber walls from the thermal load. The test facility MAVERIC has been upgraded in order to acoustically force the crossflow in which the jets are discharging. The strong sensitivity of the overall flow unsteady properties to the presence of the acoustic forcing has been clearly evidenced. The agreement between the experimental results and large-eddy simulations proved to be quite encouraging for a stationary acoustic wave whereas the case of a propagating acoustic wave investigated only numerically reveals also quite a significant change of the flow topology. In this context, the effect of the acoustic forcing on the wall thermal behavior has been analyzed thanks to the use of the fluid-solid coupled AVBP-AVTP solver.

Stably stratified atmospheric boundary layer: study trough large-eddy simulations, mesoscale modelling and observations

La capa límit atmosfèrica és l'àrea directament influenciada per la presència de la superfície de la terra i la seva alçada és d'uns centenars de metres a uns pocs quilòmetres. Durant el vespre, el refredament radiatiu estratifica establement l'aire prop del sòl i es forma el que es coneix com a Capa Límit Estable (CLE). D'avui en dia, la CLE és un règim que encara no està prou ben caracteritzat. La turbulència, que no és homogènia ni isòtropa, i la gran importància dels efectes locals com l'orografia, entre d'altres factors, dificulten l'estudi d'aquest règim. Per aquest motiu, la CLE és objecte d'especial atenció, sobretot a l'hora de millorar la seva representació en models tant de temps com de clima.Aquest treball es centra en l'estudi de la CLE mitjançant 3 eines diferents: 1) simulacions explícites de grans remolins (més conegudes com a simulacions LES), per determinar el comportament dels moviments turbulents, on les resolucions són de l'ordre de metres; 2) simulacions mesoscalars, per caracteritzar els efectes locals, on les resolucions són de l'ordre de kilòmetres; 3) anàlisi de les observacions sota aquestes condicions per tal de caracteritzar i entendre millor els fenòmens observats.En primer lloc s'estudia el rang d'estabilitats a on el model LES, que considera la teoria de Kolmogorov per la dissipació de l'energia, funciona correctament. Els resultats del model són realistes tal com mostra la seva comparació amb les mesures de dues campanyes experimentals (SABLES-98 i CASES-99). Per explorar més a fons els resultats LES i per comparar-los amb les mesures s'han utilitzat les Funcions de Distribució de Probabilitat (PDF). Aquests resultats LES són també comparables als obtinguts amb altres models LES, tal com mostra la intercomparació de models LES, més coneguda com a GABLS.Un cop desenvolupades totes les eines necessàries es fa un LES d'un cas més realista, basat en les observacions d'un màxim de vent de capes baixes (més conegut com a Low-Level Jet, LLJ). L'anàlisi combinat dels resultats LES i les mesures permet entendre millor els processos de barreja que tenen lloc a través de la inversió. Finalment, la contribució dels efectes locals s'estudia mitjançant les simulacions mesoscalars, en aquest cas centrades a l'illa de Mallorca. Durant el vespre es veu com les circulacions locals es desenvolupen a les conques (de longitud al voltant de 25km), formant-se, per exemple, vents catabàtics o LLJ com l'estudiat anteriorment. En aquest cas les simulacions es verifiquen amb imatges de satèl·lit NOAA i observacions de les estacions automàtiques de mesures, donant resultats semblants. / The atmospheric boundary layer is the area directly influenced by the presence of the Earth's surface and its height is from hundreds of meters to few kilometres. During the night, the radiative cooling stratifies the layer close to the surface and it forms the Stably-stratified Atmospheric Boundary Layer (SBL). Nowadays, the SBL is a regime not well enough characterized, yet. Turbulence, which is not homogeneous either isotropic, and the great importance of the local effects, like the orography, among other factors, make the SBL be a difficult regime to study. Even so, the SBL is an object of special attention, especially when improving its representation in numerical prediction models or climate models.This work focuses on the study of the SBL through 3 different tools: 1) Large-Eddy Simulations (LES), to determine the turbulent motions, where the resolutions are about 1m; 2) Mesoscale simulations, to characterize the local effects, where resolutions are about 1km; 3) Analysis of the observations under these conditions in order to better characterize and understand the observed phenomena.In first place, it is studied the range of stabilities where the LES model, that considers the Kolmogorov theory for the dissipation of the energy, works correctly. The results are realistic as the comparison with measures from two experimental campaigns (SABLES-98 and CASES-99) shows. To explore the results more thoroughly, and to compare the LES results to the measurements, the Probability Density Functions (PDF) have been used. The LES results are also comparable to the ones obtained with other LES models, as the intercomparison of different LES models show, better known as GABLS.Then, a more realistic case is performed using the LES model, based on observations of a Low-Level Jet (LLJ). The combined inspection of the LES results and the observations allow to better understand the mixing processes that take place through the inversion layer. Finally, the contribution of the local effects is studied through a mesoscale simulation. Here the attention is focused on the Mallorca Island. During the night, the model is able to reproduce the local circulations is a basin of a characteristic size of 25km. The main features obtained previously from the LES of the LLJ are also reproduced by the mesoscale model. These runs are verified with NOAA satellite images and observations from the automatic surface weather stations, giving that the model is able to reproduce realistic results.

Results towards a Scalable Multiphase Navier-Stokes Solver for High Reynolds Number Flows

The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations have proven formidable for nearly a century. The present difficulties are mathematical and computational in nature; the computational requirements, in particular, are exponentially exacerbated in the presence of high Reynolds number. The issues are further compounded with the introduction of markers or an immiscible fluid intended to be tracked in an ambient high Reynolds number flow; despite the overwhelming pragmatism of problems in this regime, and increasing computational efficacy, even modest problems remain outside the realm of direct approaches. Herein three approaches are presented which embody direct application to problems of this nature. An LES model based on an entropy-viscosity serves to abet the computational resolution requirements imposed by high Reynolds numbers and a one-stage compressive flux, also utilizing an entropy-viscosity, aids in accurate, efficient, conservative transport, free of low order dispersive error, of an immiscible fluid or tracer. Finally, an integral commutator and the theory of anti-dispersive spaces is introduced as a novel theoretical tool for consistency error analysis; in addition the material engenders the construction of error-correction techniques for mass lumping schemes.

[ES] La creciente preocupación por los problemas medioambientales, la disponibilidad de combustibles fósiles unido a la gran demanda de vehículos, han llevado a los gobiernos a regular las emisiones emitidas a la atmósfera. Existen propuestas de adoptar fuentes de energía renovables. Sin embargo, la sustitución de los combustibles derivados del petróleo no será fácil, rápida o rentable, y el transporte propulsado por motores de combustión interna (ICE) seguirá destacando en los próximos años. La eficiencia de la combustión y el rendimiento del motor están influenciados por el complejo proceso de inyección. La inyección directa de gasolina (GDI) aumenta el ahorro de combustible y cumple los requisitos de emisiones contaminantes, aunque queda potencial por descubrir. Por ello, ha sido objeto de estudio en los últimos años y, en consecuencia, de la presente Tesis. Este trabajo tiene como motivación mejorar el entendimiento en el campo del GDI. La compleja naturaleza transitoria del proceso de inyección hace que el estudio experimental sea un desafío. La Mecánica de Fluidos Computacional (CFD) surge como una potente alternativa a los experimentos y ha sido adoptada para esta investigación. Bajo este contexto, el objetivo de la presente Tesis es desarrollar una metodología predictiva para la caracterización hidráulica del inyector, capaz de ser aplicada a las actuales y futuras generaciones de inyectores GDI, independientemente de las características del inyector y del software de estudio. Una vez validada, el objetivo posterior es utilizar los resultados para analizar el comportamiento del chorro. Este enfoque busca seguir los pasos de la comunidad científica sustituyendo la práctica experimental. La validación de la metodología se lleva a cabo mediante su aplicación en dos inyectores GDI solenoides multi-orificio diferentes. Además, se han utilizado dos códigos CFD comerciales: CONVERGE y StarCCM+. La metodología predictiva se centra en el estudio del flujo interno y el campo cercano para caracterizar hidráulicamente el inyector. El problema a tratar se define como un sistema multifásico en un marco Euleriano y considerando un único fluido. El tratamiento del flujo multifásico se realiza mediante el enfoque Volume-of-Fluid (VOF). Además, se emplea el Homogeneous Relaxation Model (HRM) para considerar el intercambio de masa entre las fases líquida y vapor debido a cavitación y flash boiling. La turbulencia se ha tratado a partir de los enfoques Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) y Large Eddy Simulations (LES). Por otro lado, en cuanto al estudio del flujo externo, se ha adoptado el Discrete Droplet Model (DDM). La atomización y el chorro están influenciados por la geometría de la tobera, por lo que la estrategia de acoplamiento del flujo interno y externo complementa los análisis. Se han adoptado enfoques de acoplamiento unidireccional y mapeado, utilizando como parámetros de entrada los datos de flujo interno de la validada metodología. Esta Tesis aporta una nueva y valiosa metodología predictiva con una elevada precisión a la hora de caracterizar el proceso de inyección en comparativa con datos experimentales. Por otro lado, es directamente trasferible a distintos códigos de cálculo así como aplicable a inyectores con características dispares sin perjudicar las exigencias del modelo. La correcta caracterización del flujo interno ha permitido emplear los datos obtenidos para analizar el comportamiento del chorro eliminando la necesidad de usar datos experimentales. Los resultados obtenidos capturan el comportamiento macroscópico del chorro con una precisión comparable a los experimentos. Aunque todavía hay muchos retos que afrontar, la presente Tesis supone un gran avance en el campo del GDI. S'han adoptat els enfocaments d'acoblament unidireccional i mapejat, utilitzant com a paràmetres d'entrada les dades del flux intern obtingudes amb la validada metodologia. Aquesta Tesi aporta una nova i valuosa metodologia predictiva amb una elevada precisió a l'hora de caracteritzar el procés d'injecció en comparativa amb dades experimentals. És directament transferible a diversos codis de càlcul així com aplicable a injectors amb característiques dispars sense perjudicar les exigències del model. La correcta caracterització del flux intern ha permès utilitzar les dades obtingudes per tal d'analitzar el comportament de l'esprai, eliminant la necessitat d'emprar dades experimentals. La ruptura prové del desenvolupament i ús d'una metodologia completament predictiva, que substitueix els experiments requerits i així contribueix a una millor i més ampla visió de la física del procés d'injecció. / [EN] Concerns about climate change, availability of fuel resources and the high demand for vehicles, have led governments to regulate the level of pollution emitted by engines into the atmosphere. There is a strong desire to adopt renewable and sustainable energy sources. However, the substitution of liquid fuels derived from petroleum will not emerge easily, quickly or economically, and Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) will continue to excel for the next few years. Combustion efficiency and engine performance are strongly influenced by the complex fuel injection process. Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) strategies increase fuel economy and meet emission requirements, although many challenges remain, which has therefore been one of the main research objectives in recent years and of this Thesis. The present research aims to provide a better understanding in the field of GDI. The transient and complex nature of the injection process makes the experimental study of GDI quite challenging. Therefore, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) emerges as a powerful alternative adopted for this research. In this context, the main objective of the present Thesis is to develop a predictive methodology capable of being applied to current and future generations of GDI injectors, regardless of the injector features and the software employed, for the hydraulic characterization of the injector. Once validated, the subsequent goal is to employ the obtained results to analyze the behavior of the spray downstream of the injector. The approach attempts to follow the footsteps of the research community to avoid experimental practice. The predictive methodology has been validated through its application to two multi-hole solenoid GDI injectors with different features. In addition, the mentioned methodology has been evaluated using diverse commercial software: CONVERGE and StarCCM+. The methodology focuses on the study of the internal and near-field flow to hydraulically characterize the injector. So the problem to be addressed is a multi-phase system, performed in an Eulerian framework, modeled through a single-fluid approach. The multi-phase flow is treated by means of the Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) approach. Homogeneous Relaxation Model (HRM) is employed to consider the mass exchange between liquid and vapor fuel phases, due to cavitation and flash boiling. The turbulence treatment has been performed from both Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and Large Eddy Simulations (LES) approaches. Regarding the external flow study, the Discrete Droplet Model (DDM) has been adopted. In addition, being aware that atomization and spray behavior is greatly influenced by the nozzle geometry, the coupling strategy of the internal and external flow complements the analyses. One-way coupling and mapping approaches have been adopted, using as input parameters the internal flow data obtained from the already validated methodology. Accordingly, this Thesis provides a new and valuable predictive methodology, which has demonstrated a high accuracy in characterizing the flow behavior during the injection process through comparison with experimental data. It has also proven to be directly transferable to different CFD software and applicable to injectors with dissimilar characteristics without compromising the requirements of the model. The correct internal flow characterization has made it possible to employ the obtained data to analyze the spray patterns, which eliminates the need to consider experimental data. The outcomes of this study macroscopically capture the jet behavior with an accuracy comparable to experiments under different operating conditions. Although there are still many challenges to face, the present Thesis brings a breakthrough in the field of GDI. Computational study on the non-reacting flow in Lean Direct Injection gas turbine combustors through Eulerian-Lagrangian Large-Eddy Simulations

[ES] El principal desafío en los motores turbina de gas empleados en aviación reside en aumentar la eficiencia del ciclo termodinámico manteniendo las emisiones contaminantes por debajo de las rigurosas restricciones. Ésto ha conllevado la necesidad de diseñar nuevas estrategias de inyección/combustión que operan en puntos de operación peligrosos por su cercanía al límite inferior de apagado de llama. En este contexto, el concepto Lean Direct Injection (LDI) ha emergido como una tecnología prometedora a la hora de reducir los óxidos de nitrógeno (NOx) emitidos por las plantas propulsoras de los aviones de nueva generación. En este contexto, la presente tesis tiene como objetivos contribuir al conocimiento de los mecanismos físicos que rigen el comportamiento de un quemador LDI y proporcionar herramientas de análisis para una profunda caracterización de las complejas estructuras de flujo de turbulento generadas en el interior de la cámara de combustión. Para ello, se ha desarrollado una metodología numérica basada en CFD capaz de modelar el flujo bifásico no reactivo en el interior de un quemador LDI académico mediante enfoques de turbulencia U-RANS y LES en un marco Euleriano-Lagrangiano. La resolución numérica de este problema multi-escala se aborda mediante la descripción completa del flujo a lo largo de todos los elementos que constituyen la maqueta experimental, incluyendo su paso por el swirler y entrada a la cámara de combustión. Ésto se lleva a cabo través de dos códigos CFD que involucran dos estrategias de mallado diferentes: una basada en algoritmos de generación y refinamiento automático de la malla (AMR) a través de CONVERGE y otra técnica de mallado estático más tradicional mediante OpenFOAM. Por un lado, se ha definido una metodología para obtener una estrategia de mallado óptima mediante el uso del AMR y se han explotado sus beneficios frente a los enfoques tradicionales de malla estática. De esta forma, se ha demostrado que la aplicabilidad de las herramientas de control de malla disponibles en CONVERGE como el refinamiento fijo (fixed embedding) y el AMR son una opción muy interesante para afrontar este tipo de problemas multi-escala. Los resultados destacan una optimización del uso de los recursos computacionales y una mayor precisión en las simulaciones realizadas con la metodología presentada. Por otro lado, el uso de herramientas CFD se ha combinado con la aplicación de técnicas de descomposición modal avanzadas (Proper Orthogonal Decomposition and Dynamic Mode Decomposition). La identificación numérica de los principales modos acústicos en la cámara de combustión ha demostrado el potencial de estas herramientas al permitir caracterizar las estructuras de flujo coherentes generadas como consecuencia de la rotura de los vórtices (VBB) y de los chorros fuertemente torbellinados presentes en el quemador LDI. Además, la implementación de estos procedimientos matemáticos ha permitido tanto recuperar información sobre las características de la dinámica de flujo como proporcionar un enfoque sistemático para identificar los principales mecanismos que sustentan las inestabilidades en la cámara de combustión. Finalmente, la metodología validada ha sido explotada a través de un Diseño de Experimentos (DoE) para cuantificar la influencia de los factores críticos de diseño en el flujo no reactivo. De esta manera, se ha evaluado la contribución individual de algunos parámetros funcionales (el número de palas del swirler, el ángulo de dichas palas, el ancho de la cámara de combustión y la posición axial del orificio del inyector) en los patrones del campo fluido, la distribución del tamaño de gotas del combustible líquido y la aparición de inestabilidades en la cámara de combustión a través de una matriz ortogonal L9 de Taguchi. Sota aquest context, aquesta tesis té com a objectius contribuir al coneixement dels mecanismes físics que regeixen el comportament d'un cremador LDI i proporcionar ferramentes d'anàlisi per a una profunda caracterització de les complexes estructures de flux turbulent generades a l'interior de la càmera de combustió. Per tal de dur-ho a terme s'ha desenvolupat una metodología numèrica basada en CFD capaç de modelar el flux bifàsic no reactiu a l'interior d'un cremador LDI acadèmic mitjançant els enfocaments de turbulència U-RANS i LES en un marc Eulerià-Lagrangià. Açò es duu a terme a través de dos codis CFD que involucren estratègies de mallat diferents: una basada en la generación automàtica de la malla i en l'algoritme de refinament adaptatiu (AMR) amb CONVERGE i l'altra que es basa en una tècnica de mallat estàtic més tradicional amb OpenFOAM. D'una banda, s'ha definit una metodologia per tal d'obtindre una estrategia de mallat òptima mitjançant l'ús de l'AMR i s'han explotat els seus beneficis front als enfocaments tradicionals de malla estàtica. D'aquesta forma, s'ha demostrat que l'aplicabilitat de les ferramente de control de malla disponibles en CONVERGE com el refinament fixe (fixed embedding) i l'AMR són una opció molt interessant per tal d'afrontar aquest tipus de problemes multiescala. Els resultats destaquen una optimització de l'ús dels recursos computacionals i una major precisió en les simulacions realitzades amb la metodologia presentada. Aquest estudi estadístic és un bon punt de partida per a futurs estudis de injecció, atomització i combustió en cremadors LDI. / [EN] Aeronautical gas turbine engines present the main challenge of increasing the efficiency of the cycle while keeping the pollutant emissions below stringent restrictions. This has led to the design of new injection-combustion strategies working on more risky and problematic operating points such as those close to the lean extinction limit. In this context, the Lean Direct Injection (LDI) concept has emerged as a promising technology to reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx) for next-generation aircraft power plants In this context, this thesis aims at contributing to the knowledge of the governing physical mechanisms within an LDI burner and to provide analysis tools for a deep characterisation of such complex flows. In order to do so, a numerical CFD methodology capable of reliably modelling the 2-phase nonreacting flow in an academic LDI burner has been developed in an Eulerian-Lagrangian framework, using the U-RANS and LES turbulence approaches. The LDI combustor taken as a reference to carry out the investigation is the laboratory-scale swirled-stabilised CORIA Spray Burner. The multi-scale problem is addressed by solving the complete inlet flow path through the swirl vanes and the combustor through two different CFD codes involving two different meshing strategies: an automatic mesh generation with adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) algorithm through CONVERGE and a more traditional static meshing technique in OpenFOAM. On the one hand, a methodology to obtain an optimal mesh strategy using AMR has been defined, and its benefits against traditional fixed mesh approaches have been exploited. In this way, the applicability of grid control tools available in CONVERGE such as fixed embedding and AMR has been demonstrated to be an interesting option to face this type of multi-scale problem. The results highlight an optimisation of the use of the computational resources and better accuracy in the simulations carried out with the presented methodology. On the other hand, the use of CFD tools has been combined with the application of systematic advanced modal decomposition techniques (i.e., Proper Orthogonal Decomposition and Dynamic Mode Decomposition). The numerical identification of the main acoustic modes in the chamber have proved their potential when studying the characteristics of the most powerful coherent flow structures of strongly swirled jets in a LDI burner undergoing vortex breakdown (VBB). Besides, the implementation of these mathematical procedures has allowed both retrieving information about the flow dynamics features and providing a systematic approach to identify the main mechanisms that sustain instabilities in the combustor. Last, this analysis has also allowed identifying some key features of swirl spray systems such as the complex pulsating, intermittent and cyclical spatial patterns related to the Precessing Vortex Core (PVC). Finally, the validated methodology is exploited through a Design of Experiments (DoE) to quantify the influence of critical design factors on the non-reacting flow. In this way, the individual contribution of some functional parameters (namely the number of swirler vanes, the swirler vane angle, the combustion chamber width and the axial position of the nozzle tip) into both the flow field pattern, the spray size distribution and the occurrence of instabilities in the combustion chamber are evaluated throughout a Taguchi's orthogonal array L9. Such a statistical study has supposed a good starting point for subsequent studies of injection, atomisation and combustion on LDI burners. / Belmar Gil, M. (2020).
