Sentiment-Driven Topic Analysis Of Song Lyrics

Sharma, Govind 08 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Sentiment Analysis is an area of Computer Science that deals with the impact a document makes on a user. The very field is further sub-divided into Opinion Mining and Emotion Analysis, the latter of which is the basis for the present work. Work on songs is aimed at building affective interactive applications such as music recommendation engines. Using song lyrics, we are interested in both supervised and unsupervised analyses, each of which has its own pros and cons. For an unsupervised analysis (clustering), we use a standard probabilistic topic model called Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). It mines topics from songs, which are nothing but probability distributions over the vocabulary of words. Some of the topics seem sentiment-based, motivating us to continue with this approach. We evaluate our clusters using a gold dataset collected from an apt website and get positive results. This approach would be useful in the absence of a supervisor dataset. In another part of our work, we argue the inescapable existence of supervision in terms of having to manually analyse the topics returned. Further, we have also used explicit supervision in terms of a training dataset for a classifier to learn sentiment specific classes. This analysis helps reduce dimensionality and improve classification accuracy. We get excellent dimensionality reduction using Support Vector Machines (SVM) for feature selection. For re-classification, we use the Naive Bayes Classifier (NBC) and SVM, both of which perform well. We also use Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) for classification, but observe that the results coincide with those of NBC, with no exceptions. This drives us towards establishing a theoretical equivalence between the two.

An assessment of the recruitment, selection and retention of technical staff in the Limpopo Department of Agriculture

Letshokgohla, Moloko Phineas 06 1900 (has links)
This research examined the problem of poor retention of employees with scarce skills in the Limpopo Department of Agriculture. Employees with scarce skills were selected to participate in the research which focused on recruitment, selection and retention. Recruitment, selection and retention of line employees with valued skills are a major crises facing many institutions. The problem of poor retention and turnover of line employees with scarce skills has far reaching consequences in that dissatisfaction with working conditions causes additional turnover. To some extent, the Department can control the turnover rate of its employees with scarce skills. The research assessed recruitment, selection and retention of line employees with scarce skills in the Limpopo Department of Agriculture. The research concentrated on the reasons for poor retention of line employees with scarce skills, the extent of turnover of employees with scarce skills, what process do the Limpopo Department of Agriculture follow in filling vacant post and what interventions and measures do the Department undertakes to ensure compliance to the recruitment policy. A questionnaire was used to collect data from managers and line employees with scarce skills. A hundred (100) questionnaires were distributed and 67 were returned. The findings revealed that Limpopo Department of Agriculture can do more in retaining its valued line employees (those with scarce skills). The challenge of scarce skills in the Department is compounded by the high demand of for instance engineers, state veterinarians and researchers in South Africa. There is a war on scarce skills in South Africa, Generation Y needs resources, better working conditions and a better salary to be retained. The research findings were evaluated and possible strategies for improving recruitment, selection and retention of line employees with scarce skills are recommended. The Department should design a career progression path policy. This would assist in retaining scarce skills in the public sector. / Public Administration and Management / M.A. (Public Administration)

Elektronische Eigenschaften von Diamant und diamantartigen Kohlenstoffen

Waidmann, Stephan 12 July 2001 (has links)
In the context of the immense potential of diamond as a material for use in the microelectronics industry, in this thesis pristine and doped diamond films have been deposited on silicon using chemical vapour deposition. Subsequently their electronic properties have been investigated using mainly electron energy-loss spectroscopy. Doping of the films with boron, lithium or phosphorous was carried out either via in-situ gas phase doping during film growth or using ion implantation. Upon ion implantation an increase of the carbon content with sp2 hybridisation has generally been found due to ion beam induced damage. In the case of boron doping it was possible to significantly reduce this sp2-contribution using a high temperature anneal. For the in-situ doping with boron, upon increasing doping concentration a decrease of the sp2-contribution was found. For the sample with the highest boron content the boron 1s absorption edge could also be investigated, providing evidence for the preferential incorporation of the boron atoms into tetrahedrally co-ordinated sites. This boron incorporation leads to the existence of electronic excitations in the energy range of the band gap, which could be observed using both infrared and electron energy-loss spectroscopy. From the electron energy-loss measurements it was possible to calculate acceptor concentrations which were consistent with the large amount of tetrahedrally co-ordinated boron atoms. A second theme in this thesis involved the study of pristine and nitrogen doped diamond-like amorphous carbon films, which are an interesting material class with far-reaching technological potential. Here the focus of the research concerned the dependency of the electronic and optical properties of the films upon the ion energy and the nitrogen partial pressure applied during the film preparation. The plasmon energies, mass densities, sp3 contribution and the optical band gaps of the samples were determined quantitatively, whereby the maximum in all these quantities was found to occur for ion energies of 100 eV. Furthermore, all of these characteristics were found to decrease continually with increasing nitrogen content. A Kramers-Kronig analysis of the loss spectra enabled the derivation of the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function and with this of the complete spectrum of single particle excitations. The hybridization between the carbon and nitrogen atoms was also studied in detail from the analysis of the respective 1s absorption edges. Furthermore this thesis deals with the investigation of diamond as a model system for solids with pure covalent bonds. In particular, the loss function of diamond was measured along different high symmetry directions over a wide range of energy and momentum. Firstly, the EELS measurements showed directly the strongly anisotropic nature of the plasmon dispersion in diamond. Secondly, by the comparison of the experimental spectra with ab initio LDA-based calculations that include crystal local field effects as well as exchange and correlation contributions, conclusions can be drawn as to the influence of these quantities. In the optical limit, but even more so with increasing momentum transfer q, a superposition of the collective plasmon excitation and the single particle excitations in the energy range of the plasmon is observed. This energetic proximity results in a coupling between both types of excitations. Apart from the distinct influence of the bandstructure on the plasmon dispersion, the considerably inhomogeneous electron distribution of diamond would lead one to expect significant crystal local field effects in this system. The comparison between the experimental and the calculated spectra shows explicitly that the crystal local field effects increase with increasing momentum transfer and play an important role in defining the structure of the loss function.

Vliv parcelačního atlasu na kvalitu klasifikace pacientů s neurodegenerativním onemocněním / Influence of parcellation atlas on quality of classification in patients with neurodegenerative dissease

Montilla, Michaela January 2018 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to define the dependency of the classification of patients affected by neurodegenerative diseases on the choice of the parcellation atlas. Part of this thesis is the application of the functional connectivity analysis and the calculation of graph metrics according to the method published by Olaf Sporns and Mikail Rubinov [1] on fMRI data measured at CEITEC MU. The application is preceded by the theoretical research of parcellation atlases for brain segmentation from fMRI frames and the research of mathematical methods for classification as well as classifiers of neurodegenerative diseases. The first chapters of the thesis brings a theoretical basis of knowledge from the field of magnetic and functional magnetic resonance imaging. The physical principles of the method, the conditions and the course of acquisition of image data are defined. The third chapter summarizes the graph metrics used in the diploma thesis for analyzing and classifying graphs. The paper presents a brief overview of the brain segmentation methods, with the focuse on the atlas-based segmentation. After a theoretical research of functional connectivity methods and mathematical classification methods, the findings were used for segmentation, calculation of graph metrics and for classification of fMRI images obtained from 96 subjects into the one of two classes using Binary classifications by support vector machines and linear discriminatory analysis. The data classified in this study was measured on patiens with Parkinson’s disease (PD), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a combination of PD and MCI and subjects belonging to the control group of healthy individuals. For pre-processing and analysis, the MATLAB environment, the SPM12 toolbox and The Brain Connectivity Toolbox were used.

E-noses equipped with Artificial Intelligence Technology for diagnosis of dairy cattle disease in veterinary / E-nose utrustad med Artificiell intelligens teknik avsedd för diagnos av mjölkboskap sjukdom i veterinär

Haselzadeh, Farbod January 2021 (has links)
The main goal of this project, running at Neurofy AB, was that developing an AI recognition algorithm also known as, gas sensing algorithm or simply recognition algorithm, based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, which would have the ability to detect or predict diary cattle diseases using odor signal data gathered, measured and provided by Gas Sensor Array (GSA) also known as, Electronic Nose or simply E-nose developed by the company. Two major challenges in this project were to first overcome the noises and errors in the odor signal data, as the E-nose is supposed to be used in an environment with difference conditions than laboratory, for instance, in a bail (A stall for milking cows) with varying humidity and temperatures, and second to find a proper feature extraction method appropriate for GSA. Normalization and Principal component analysis (PCA) are two classic methods which not only intended for re-scaling and reducing of features in a data-set at pre-processing phase of developing of odor identification algorithm, but also it thought that these methods reduce the affect of noises in odor signal data. Applying classic approaches, like PCA, for feature extraction and dimesionality reduction gave rise to loss of valuable data which made it difficult for classification of odors. A new method was developed to handle noises in the odors signal data and also deal with dimentionality reduction without loosing of valuable data, instead of the PCA method in feature extraction stage. This method, which is consisting of signal segmentation and Autoencoder with encoder-decoder, made it possible to overcome the noise issues in data-sets and it also is more appropriate feature extraction method due to better prediction accuracy performed by the AI gas recognition algorithm in comparison to PCA. For evaluating of Autoencoder monitoring of its learning rate of was performed. For classification and predicting of odors, several classifier, among alias, Logistic Regression (LR), Support vector machine (SVM), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Random forest Classifier (RFC) and MultiLayer perceptron (MLP), was investigated. The best prediction was obtained by classifiers MLP . To validate the prediction, obtained by the new AI recognition algorithm, several validation methods like Cross validation, Accuracy score, balanced accuracy score , precision score, Recall score, and Learning Curve, were performed. This new AI recognition algorithm has the ability to diagnose 3 different diary cattle diseases with an accuracy of 96% despite lack of samples. För utvärdering of Autoencoder övervakning of inlärningshastighet av Autoencoder tillämpades.

Felgueroso Rodríguez, Andrés 04 September 2023 (has links)
[EN] In a present marked by the continuous fight against pollution and climate change, research into technological improvements that allow an acceptable transition for society towards a greener future occupies a fundamental role. Specifically, aviation is a constant focus of innovation, since it is considered an essential function in a society as globalized as today's, but with worrying levels of pollution. In this regard, the development of motors with high efficiencies is a key step for the environmental transition. However, these alternatives present a technological challenge in terms of their thermal management, based mainly on the need to increase cooling. In this context and promoted by the Clean Sky 2 "Aerodynamic upgrade of Surface Air Cooled Oil Cooler (SACOC)" project, this doctoral thesis focuses on the experimental study of surface heat exchanger geometries for engine oil cooling using the use of secondary flow air from the turbofan. Currently, there are a number of limitations regarding the capacity to carry out a detailed analysis and design of this type of heat exchanger due to the lack of facilities that allow a correct, complete and robust experimental characterization. The main data sources are based on numerical calculations validated from extrapolations under conditions of questionable applicability. The thesis presents results after a detailed characterization of four different geometries of heat exchangers using both intrusive and optical techniques. A flow bench capable of generating a typical air current around the exchangers is used, while an oil conditioning system controls the point of operation on the hot side. To more realistically recreate operating conditions, a methodology is presented to automatically generate distortion screens that can reproduce a two-dimensional distribution of target velocities through additive manufacturing of variable porosity panels. This model, analyzed by means of CFD and validated experimentally, is used to reproduce the typical speed profile present around the exchanger in a real operating circumstance. After defining relevant metrics that allow analyzing the behaviour of the different geometries, it is concluded that aerodynamic and thermal problems are highly coupled in these devices, demonstrating the need for careful design to improve the exchanger's performance. The results show that an improvement of more than 12% in pressure drop and almost 20% in heat exchange can be obtained. In addition, the impact of using the distortion screen has been confirmed, with variations of the order of 10% in both variables. The results also show that it is possible to carry out a preliminary characterization in a reliable way with a 3D printed model, in terms of velocity fields, pressure losses and corrected eigenfrequencies. With the analysis carried out in this thesis, it can be concluded that it is essential to have an experimental installation that reproduces the real operating conditions of an engine to carry out relevant studies of heat exchangers. In addition, the use of appropriate metrics is necessary together with the development of a comprehensive, reliable and robust methodology. The results and methodology presented in this research can have a significant impact both at an academic and industrial level, since they open the door to developing more efficient thermal management systems in preliminary design stages that are more affordable, consume less time and have more flexibility to make changes. / The respondent wishes to acknowledge the financial support received through the Programa de Apoyo para la Investigación y Desarrollo (PAID) of Univer- sitat Politècnica de València under grant PAID-01-20 n◦ 21589. Methods for face detection and adaptive face recognition

Pavani, Sri-Kaushik 21 July 2010 (has links)
The focus of this thesis is on facial biometrics; specifically in the problems of face detection and face recognition. Despite intensive research over the last 20 years, the technology is not foolproof, which is why we do not see use of face recognition systems in critical sectors such as banking. In this thesis, we focus on three sub-problems in these two areas of research. Firstly, we propose methods to improve the speed-accuracy trade-off of the state-of-the-art face detector. Secondly, we consider a problem that is often ignored in the literature: to decrease the training time of the detectors. We propose two techniques to this end. Thirdly, we present a detailed large-scale study on self-updating face recognition systems in an attempt to answer if continuously changing facial appearance can be learnt automatically.

Analyses on tech-enhanced and anonymous Peer Discussion as well as anonymous Control Facilities for tech-enhanced Learning / Analysen zur technologieunterstützten und anonymem Peer Discussion sowie anonymen Einflusswerkzeuge für technologieunterstütztes Lernen

Hara, Tenshi 12 September 2016 (has links) (PDF)
An increasing number of university freshmen has been observable in absolute number as well as percentage of population over the last decade. However, at the same time the drop-out rate has increased significantly. While a drop in attendance could be observed at the same time, statistics show that young professionals consider only roughly thirty percent of their qualification to originate in their university education. Taking this into consideration with the before mentioned, one conclusion could be that students fail to see the importance of fundamental classes and choose to seek knowledge elsewhere, for example in free online courses. However, the so acquired knowledge is a non-attributable qualification. One solution to this problem must be to make on-site activities more attractive. A promising approach for raised attractiveness would be to support students in self-regulated learning processes, making them experience importance and value of own decisions based on realistic self-assessment and self-evaluation. At the same time, strict ex-cathedra teaching should be replaced by interactive forms of education, ideally activating on a meta-cognitive level. Particularly, as many students bring mobile communication devices into classes, this promising approach could be extended by utilising these mobile devices as second screens. That way, enhanced learning experiences can be provided. The basic idea is simple, namely to contribute to psychological concepts with the means of computer science. An example for this idea are audience response systems. There has been numerous research into these and related approaches for university readings, but other forms of education have not been sufficiently considered, for example tutorials. This technological aspect can be combined with recent didactics research and concepts like peer instruction or visible learning. Therefore, this dissertation presents an experimental approach at providing existing IT solutions for on-site tutorials, specifically tools for audience responses, evaluations, learning demand assessments, peer discussion, and virtual interactive whiteboards. These tools are provided under observation of anonymity and cognisant incidental utilisation. They provide insight into students\' motivation to attend classes, their motivation to utilise tools, and into their tool utilisation itself. Experimental findings are combined into an extensible system concept consisting of three major tool classes: anonymous peer discussion means, anonymous control facilities, and learning demand assessment. With the exception of the latter, promising findings in context of tutorials are presented, for example the reduction of audience response systems to an emergency brake, the versatility of (peer) discussion systems, or a demand for retroactive deanonymisation of contributions. The overall positive impact of tool utilisation on motivation to attend and perceived value of tutorials is discussed and supplemented by a positive impact on the final exams\' outcomes.
