The Effects Of Problem-based Learning Method On 9th Grade StudentsApacik, Mukerrem 01 February 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of problem-based learning (PBL) on 9th grade students&rsquo / geometry achievement. The study was conducted in a rural town of Ankara with 44 ninth-grade high school students. The randomized pretest-posttest control group design was used. The experimental group was instructed with hybrid PBL and the control group was instructed with traditional teaching methods. The treatment was given for 4 hours every week for a total of six weeks.
Geometry Achievement Test (GAT) was administrated as pre-test, post test and retention test to both groups to measure students&rsquo / academic achievement in geometry, was developed by the researcher. This test included 18 items which were related to polygons and circular region.
In order to analyze the obtained data, Mann-Witney U, Independent T-test and one-way repeated measures Analysis of Variance were used. Analysis of post test results indicated that there was no statistically significant mean rank difference between students who were instructed by traditional teaching method and those who were instructed by PBL. There was also no significant mean difference between retention of GAT scores of the two groups. In addition, a statistically significant change in GAT scores of students who were instructed by PBL across three time periods (pre-treatment, post treatment and retention) was found. There were statistically significant mean differences between their prior and post GAT scores / and between their prior and retention GAT scores of the PBL method group. On the other hand, there was no statistically significant mean difference between post and retention GAT scores.
The present study suggests that PBL can contribute to students&rsquo / retention of geometry achievement

A story-based language enrichment programme for grade 4 English second language learners with inadequate English proficiency / by Mirna NelNel, Mirna January 2003 (has links)
This study focuses on the English Second Language (ESL) learner with inadequate English proficiency. The Schools Act allows parents to choose their children's Language of Learning and Teaching (LOLT).
Consequently, many parents choose English as LOLT for their children, believing that it will guarantee success for their children in the world of school and work.
ESL learners with inadequate English proficiency experience barriers to learning. Most educators do not have the knowledge or the tools to support
these ESL learners. Consequently, many ESL learners are recommended for retention or defined as "slow" learners. A crucial need for a language
enrichment programme to augment these ESL learners' inadequate English proficiency was identified. After an in-depth search no South
African language enrichment programme could be found for Grade 4 mainstream educators to implement in the classroom.
A questionnaire was designed, based on the literature research, and distributed to determine what the needs of Grade 4 mainstream educators
Concerning a language enrichment programme were. Grade 4 educators were targeted as a population since Grade 4 has been reported by
educators as a critical period in the learners' education and also falls into the researcher's sphere of responsibilities. A great need for a language enrichment programme was confirmed. From the questionnaire it was deduced that educators felt comfortable using a story as medium for the
language enrichment programme. A language enrichment programme suitable for the mainstream classroom was compiled for Grade 4 ESL
learners based on the literature research and the responses of the questionnaire.
40 Grade 4 Language, Literacy and Communication (LLC) educators with knowledge on how to support learners with barriers were requested to
implement the language enrichment programme over a six week period in their classroom. A short questionnaire to assess the suitability of
implementation was completed by them afterwards. The response from the educators was exceptionally positive.
The results of this study suggest that the story-based language enrichment programme can be implemented with success in the mainstream classroom to augment ESL learners' inadequate English proficiency, making the road to academic and career success so much smoother. / This study focuses on the English Second Language (ESL) learner with inadequate English proficiency. Previous issue date: 2010-04-30 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / Access to teaching in higher education is sought by professionals from various fields, and many start and remain in the profession, without a specific initial training or continuing to exercise it. This reality is a challenge being faced by universities and research in Education. The specificity of the work of the professor is to train professionals, including teachers and, according to the LDB, higher education institutions are responsible in training teachers for basic education. Among the various aspects involved in regard to the training of teachers, some are repeated as research topics and others are silenced. There are few discussions regarding the formation and performance of the teacher trainer of future teachers. This research builds on the work of Mizukami, Cunha, Tardif, Shulman, and its central question is: how teacher educators describe and analyze their teaching at the graduation? A study was conducted with three former teachers of Math and Letters courses of a public higher education in the State of Bahia. The goals of the research were: to understand the learning experienced by the teacher educator to develop their teaching in graduation; to analyze the priorities set by the trainers teach future teachers; to understand how the teacher trainer organizes their teaching and knowledge that mobilizes. In the methodology, interviews were conducted addressing training and professional practice of teaching and teacher trainer in graduation. The process of data analysis was based on the definition of the following focuses: learning experienced in teaching; priorities in acting with initial teacher training, knowledge and practices in the training of undergraduates; observations about the student and their education. Although it has specifics, teaching teacher trainer features many elements of approach to teaching in other contexts of education and training. This study suggests some syntheses that go toward the devaluation of teaching because, in university culture, teaching is not an activity that tends to prestige or add value to the professional teacher. Teaching is seen as arising from other activities, such as those related to research, guidance, consulting, among others. In the absence of an institutional teacher training proposal, these teachers develop a process of self formation, seeking alternatives to their needs and challenges in relation to teaching and also research. It seems that the extension in the university is not its major concern and this is just another way of fragmentation and hierarchy of knowledge and practice in university. The concerns of trainers in order to support the understanding of specific knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, contextual knowledge and professional field should be part of a project for institutional strengthening of teaching in undergraduate and professional development of trainers.

Aprender e ensinar na idade mídia: quando os jovens ocupam as duas dimensões do processo / Learning and teaching in the media age: when young people occupy the two dimensions of processMarta Lúcia de Souza Celino 28 August 2012 (has links)
This work had as a general aim to investigate the dimensions of the processes of teaching and learning used in the contemporaneity and played by young people, high school students integrated on professsional courses, of a public school in the city of Campina Grande/PB and their teachers, students of the computing course at the State University of Paraíba/UEPB). Follow the principle that young people as a unique concept, forged in modernity, it can not cope with the diversity of the young people. That build their subjectivities of distinct ways. Forged in their own cultural contexts in which they constitute themselves as active subjects. In fact, if want to know the young people and their practices, we should look for and observe them in concrete contexts. In this sense, my incursion through the practices of the young graduating teachers-students with the students of high school was constituded as a unique opportunity of showing how they measure the students' learning. with the use of TIC. The necessity of knowing how the students of UEPB (graduating students) are graduated to the use of TIC. It took me to the search of knowledge that are taught at UEPB. While students of adult professor. for the achievement of the study I have assumed with the students of this university and with the high school students -the students' student of UEPB - a relationship based on dialogue and in alterity (AMORIN, 2002, 2004; JOBIN E SOUZA, 1995, 2011; BAKHTIN, 1981, 2003 among others). This study attend diverses authors to approach knowledge related to contemporary cultures - the ciberculture - LÉVY,1993, 1996, 1999; LEMOS,2007,2011; PRIMO, 2008; SANTAELLA, 2003,2004; CAVALCANTI & NEPOMUCENO, 2007; VEEN & VRAKKING, 2009; BONILLA, 2009; PRETTO, 1996, 1999, 2002, 2008 AMONG OTHERS). This study has shown that young people, graduating students from UEPB have more experience with TIC than their professors (adults). The proficiency for the use of the TIC through graduating students of high school revealed itself in different moments of its practice together with the students of high school. It also shows the study that high school students see countless advantages in study with the graduating students of UFPB because they share in the ciberculture; because they have a language near to the students; because they do not put themselves in places higher than the students. When dealing with level of knowledge is approached; because they are humble to recognize that they also learn while teaching. All of this take us to affirm that teaching and learning at the midia age demands the acknowledgement of alterity of groups involved in both processes.

A AMBIÊNCIA PEDAGÓGICA DIGITAL: APRENDIZAGEM DA DOCÊNCIA E COREOGRAFIAS DIDÁTICAS DIGITAIS NA EDUCAÇÃO BÁSICA / DIGITAL PEDAGOGICAL AMBIENCE: LEARNING OF TEACHING AND DIGITAL DIDACTIC COREOGRAPHIES IN BASIC EDUCATIONEidelwein, Luciana Patricia Schumacher 04 March 2016 (has links)
This master‟s thesis is part of LP1 Formation, Knowledge and Professional Development research line from the Graduate Program in Education of the Federal University of Santa Maria, aiming at understanding the influences of digital pedagogical ambience in learning of teaching and in the production of digital didactic choreographies of elementary school teachers. The master‟s thesis unfolds in the following specific objectives: a) to know the configuration of digital pedagogical ambience in the context of first years of elementary school in a basic education school; b) to identify how teachers organize their pedagogical practices using digital technologies; c) to recognize how teachers manifest technological pedagogical knowledge. This study adopts a qualitative approach of sociocultural nature as its methodology, with narrative interviews, contributing to the elucidation of the proposed theme. Results demonstrate that the school researched is promoting a digital pedagogical ambience through a computer laboratory, properly maintained and available to all teachers and students; teaching training about the operational system LINUX and tools and applications; assistance and guidance from a technologically fluent teacher, who is responsible for the laboratory; and that this space is already part of the school culture. Teachers redefied themselves through reflections on their practices, sharing with peers and through the appropriation of technological pedagogical knowledge. Therewith, they include activities involving technology in their pedagogical practices, making the identification development of the four levels of didactic choreographies possible: anticipation, scene placement, learning basic model and student learning product.

This study is part of the Research Line: ―Formation, Knowledge and Professional Development‖ of the Postgraduate Program in Education of Federal University of Santa Maria. The research is characterized as sociocultural narrative based on the conception of Bolzan (2001, 2006a, 2009), grounded on the studies of Vygotsky (1996, 2005, 2010), Freitas (1994, 1998, 2002), Bakthin (1992, 2010, 2011), Werstch (1993) and Connelly e Clandinin (1995). The aim of the study was to comprehend the process of learning of teaching of professors, referring to the experience of working with students with deficiency, B Quota students, at UFSM. Instruments of research were the inclusive education legislation and the narrative semistructured interview. Subjects of research were twelve professors that teach B Quota students in the context of undergraduate courses at Federal University of Santa Maria, RS. The research also proposed to recognize how the experience of pedagogical work with B Quota students influences the learning process of teaching; to know the resources used regarding personal and professional trajectories of professors that work with the inclusion of B Quota students and their implications on the process of learning of teaching; and to identify how resilience is manifested throughout the pedagogical work of university professors that work with B Quota students. Bibliographical revision of the research contemplated themes such as learning of teaching, personal and professional trajectories and resilience in teaching. The thesis produced in this study is that the learning process of university teaching, as concerns students with deficiency, happens throughout the daily work of the professors, grounded on knowledge and feelings deriving from the experience of formation. The professors who work with B Quota students, at UFSM, face a group of challenges/barriers/problems, not only regarding demands related to the deficiencies. Such challenges relate to the pedagogical work and to the constitution of the professor that learns to teach in new university contexts, in contemporaneous societies. In this scenario, professors are able to work in their specific knowledge fields, but insufficiently prepared as concerns teaching in the University context. Thus, being a professor, in emerging contexts, requires a compromise with teaching and learning processes in which B Quota students are involved, demanding willingness to live new and unpredictable experiences; striving to break the pedagogical, architectural and attitudinal barriers involving university inclusion, teaching generativity and the willingness to constantly learn; and, finally, the production of collective/shared actions that establish the protagonism of professors. Resilience in teaching is the constituting movement of being a professor that implicates in the learning of teaching as concerns professors that work with B Quota students, at University.

Previous issue date: 2006-02-24 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / The present master s degree dissertation is structured around the following question: What do the works presented on ANPEd and ENDIPE say about the process of professional learning of teaching taken place in the beginning of the career? To answer it, a time cut-out equivalent to a decade of research (1995-2004) was performed, that is, a search on the annals of the last ten ANPEd Annual Meetings and the last five ENDIPEs was conducted, looking for the works that presented as main discussion focus the beginner teacher and its professional learning process, regardless of teaching level.
The framework on which the research is based privileges three categories: the teacher formation models, advocating for the model of the teacher as an intellectual critic, that is, a teacher that recognizes the controversial nature of education, not conceiving it as a mere reproducer of the dominant ideology, but also as propelling spring of the social transformation; the characteristics of the beginning of teaching, such as, the feeling of reality shock, marked by the feelings of survival and discovery and the teaching knowing, which comes from various sources and is built, not only
during the initial period, but throughout the whole career.
Analyzing the results presented by the selected studies, it was possible to verify that: a) the prevailing teacher formation model is the practical epistemology, especially
the one that understands the teacher as a practical reflexive professional; b) the characteristics of the beginning of teaching, pointed by literature, are confirmed, especially regarding the feeling of reality shock; c) the teaching knowing is plural, composite and heterogeneous, resulting from several sources (family, previous schooling, initial formation, experience). The data analysis allows pointing out also, as more emphasized aspects in the analyzed works: the professional socialization, the teaching knowing and the feelings of survival and discovery that strongly mark this career beginning, among others. Less emphasized aspects include: the relations between initial formation and professional
insertion moment and the learning ways developed by the beginner teacher. Finally, silenced aspects include, among others: the continuous formation and professional
development politics, diversity/difference questions, cultural plurality and multiculturalism, pedagogical practice analysis of the teachers of young and adults and the existing relation between the beginner teacher and its professional acting model. The model of the teacher as an intellectual critic, advocated by this work, was also absent from the discussions about the teacher in the beginning of career.

The fundamental hipothesis is that the lack of motivation causes the selflessness for the English language classes and emphasize the low results of learning. We intend to reflect as the teaching of English language occurs in the rural context and the consequences of the play approach for the learning, watching as the relation between the native language and the foreign language contributes for the developing of the communicative competence. The theoretical support of this research centers in the Interactional Sociolinguistics (Gumperz & Cook-Gumperz, Bortoni-Ricardo) in Paulo Freire s dialogic pedagogy and others. In order to obtain the trustful results, the data were collected from questionnaire answers from students of the 6th grade and the principal of a rural school that is located in Cajazeiras-PB, besides narratives that were produced by the students and researcher-teacher. The analysis of the data is based in an interpretative methodology which aims to demonstrate the importance of the play activities and their reflexes for the learning. The results confirmed that the teaching of EL, in rural school, might be meaningful when the teacher use play procedures like a motivated way in order to become the student aware of the cultural diversity.

Previous issue date: 2010-08-17 / The present study aims to analyze the potentialities and limitations of GeoGebra software on what concerns trigonometry s teaching and learning processes. Taking the present resources of public school from the state of Rio Grande do Norte, the research intends to answer the following question: Could we use the current conditions of public school and the Geogebra software to optimize the trigonometry s learning and teaching processes situation? . To make it a possible to answer the question above, a module of investigative activities was created and applied. The methodological intervention was made among second year High School students from a public school in Natal, RN. The theoretical reference of Mathematics Didactics was taken was a base, adopting the conceptions of Borba and Penteado (2001), Valente (1999) and Zulatto (2002, 2007) about the use of Information Technology (IT) on Mathematics classrooms. In order to create the investigative activities helped us to understand how the students make their constructions and their visual perception through the process of dragging images on the computer screen. Furthermore, the activities done with the GeoGebra software s resources facilitate the resolution of trigonometry situations / O presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar as potencialidades e limita??es do software GeoGebra no ensino e aprendizagem de Trigonometria.
