The history of the concept of grammaticalisation

Lindström, Therese January 2004 (has links)
The present thesis discusses the history and meaning of the term and concept called grammaticalisation. Linguists usually ascribe the coinage of the term grammaticalisation to Antoine Meillet (1866-1936), who allegedly played a vital role in the history of grammaticalisation. It is also widely acknowledged that grammaticalisation was in some way 'revived' during the 1970s, and that Talmy Givón had an important role in this, as demonstrated by the popularity of the saying 'Today’s morphology is yesterday’s syntax' (taken from one of his articles). I show that Meillet wrote little about grammaticalisation and that he hardly ever used this word, and possibly did not mean for it to be viewed as a term / label. Moreover, the paper in question (Meillet, 1912) is basically a general introduction to a concept which he sees as a continuation of a notion with a long history. In addition, I prove that there are no clear links between Meillet and Givón’s work in the early 1970s. Despite the general acceptance that Meillet coined grammaticalisation, my thesis proves that it could have been coined more than once, and that it does not always mean the same thing to all users. I show that sometimes the term is accompanied by examples which others have used to illustrate lexicalisation, a term which some employ for a process that is seen as the opposite of grammaticalisation. I therefore advocate careful use of our definitions of terminology and concepts, and insist that we should define our notions, instead of letting examples do the work of illustration and definition. Finally, I question whether it is true that grammaticalisation is unidirectional. I research the history of the view that grammaticalisation is a unidirectional process. Grammatical relations can be expressed by different means – e.g. word order, content words becoming grammatical markers, or parts of words being given a function. I believe all these should be compared, in order to improve our knowledge of how languages change and why. I claim that they all represent sub-processes of a superordinate category which I have labelled supergrammaticalisation.

Lillebröder och småsaker : En studie av förleden lill- och små- i svenska sammansättningar / Little Brothers and Small Matters : A study of lill- and små- in Swedish compounds

Bondarenko, Alice January 2019 (has links)
In suppletion different inflectional forms of a word have different stems. The Swedish adjective liten has the suppletive plural form små and is the only Swedish adjective with number suppletion. In compounds the forms lill- and små- are used. Since non-head elements in compounds are not expected to show suppletion according to modern theories of word formation they may be assumed to express some other meaning. This study examines the productivity, use and meaning of lill- and små- in nominal Swedish compounds, using data from corpora. The results show that lill- and små- do not express grammatical number in compounds, but mutually exclusive, lexicalized senses. Lill- has a high degree of individuality and is used in the senses of ‘smaller’, ‘imitation’ as well as of an ameliorative diminutive referring to children. Små- is more productive than lill-, has a lower degree of individuality and is used with the senses ‘small size’, ‘unimportant’ and ‘young’. For a limited group of compounds with a kinship term as a head, number seems to be the most important factor when determining which first element to chose.

Kartläggning av KVINNA och MAN i August Strindbergs verk : En korpusstudie av sammansatta substantiv och kollokationer med ett diakront perspektiv / Mapping the use of WOMAN and MAN in August Strindberg's works : A corpus study of compound nouns and collocations with a diachronic view

Guseinova, Fatima January 2018 (has links)
Discourse prosody and semantic preference are inherent aspects of language. As soon as a word becomes part of text, it seizes to exist as an isolated unit. The aim of this thesis was to study quantitatively the use of the lemmas woman and man, and the compound nouns containing them, in the works of August Strindberg. The material used consists of his novels The Red Room, Gothic Rooms and Black Banners. The occurrence of the two lemmas was observed with respect to frequency, the degree of emotional weight in compounds and the distribution of lexicalized compounds between women and men. Additionally, the context of lemmas was observed diachronically, through an analysis of discourse prosody and semantic preference of the collocations for woman and man. The results showed that the lemma man is mentioned more often than woman. Most compounds for man are lexicalized, while the opposite pertains to women. Compounds containing woman are more often negatively charged. Meanwhile, compounds containing man are predominantly neutral. The analysis of collocations for the lemmas was not able to map the author’s attitude accurately and more data and deeper methods of analysis are needed.
