THE EXPERIENTIAL PROCESS OF ACQUIRING WISDOM: HOW WISE INDIVIDUALS REPORT LEARNING LIFE LESSONS

Taylor, Connie 20 September 2010 (has links)
Philosophers have considered and debated the topic of wisdom for centuries. Now, as we face an ageing world population, a need for the scientific exploration of the topic has arisen. Over the past 30 years, the challenge to understand and define wisdom has been taken up and studied mainly by the fields of psychology and sociology. A body of wisdom literature has emerged and this thesis addresses an identified gap in that literature concerning the development of wisdom. This thesis examines the process of acquiring wisdom across the human lifespan. Specifically, this qualitative exploratory case study examines the process employed by wise nominees when transforming a personal life experience into a life lesson. The opinions, experiences, and relationship descriptions of their nominators are uniquely included in the study’s findings. Each of the four cases in the study is comprised of a dyad, a nominator and their wise nominee. Data were collected from the study participants through questionnaires and in-depth interviews. A framework, comprised of three components, that begins to describe the wisdom acquisition process emerged from the study’s findings. The first element of the emerging wisdom acquisition framework is a new succinct definition of wisdom. The second element is a model that describes the iterative process of learning from life experiences. This model was hypothesized at the outset of the study and obtained some corroboration from the study’s data. The third element of the emerging framework is the life management practices that wise individuals employ to deal with life experiences. These practices emerged as four central themes from the data. Three of those four life practices revolve around self-reliance whereas the fourth theme addresses the spiritual balance in the participants’ lives. This study is a first attempt to unravel the complex phenomenon of the acquisition of wisdom. / Thesis (Master, Education) -- Queen's University, 2010-09-20 15:34:05.91

Pradinių klasių mokytojų profesinės saviugdos ypatumai / Peculiarities of the primary school teachers' self-learning

Kuzminskienė, Kristina 22 June 2005 (has links)
Recently in pedagogical literature more and more attention to adult education and whole life studies is given. After beginning of the Movement, searches was started for new ways how to wake up a teacher for refusing authoritarianism, dictatorship working methods, changing attitude to work, knowing children psychology, evolution singularities, improving relations with colleagues and pupils, to feel self value, dignity, national self-respect, being self-sufficient educator. Ph. D. M.Lukšienė about 1991 education reform was writing: “the most important member of changeover – teacher […]. We will not get to feet without growing and educating person. […]. Education and all school system with all nurture meaning institutions appear with very important role”. Educator perfection is not distinguishable from school perfection, it means youth generation future depends on that too. Big part of the professional perfection takes pedagogical and personal self-help, which is not all the time stimulated by internal motivation and positive emotions. Usually educator is improving himself only as much as it is a needed for qualification enhance. There are cases, when certificates are bought and methodical meetings are only formality. Plus, not every time organized region events satisfy educators’ needs. I am primary school teacher, so I will examine my colleagues – primary school teachers’ pedagogical self-help singularity and specificity. In my work there will be pedagogical self-help...

Costa, Valéria Machado da January 2014 (has links)
The profusion of multimodal texts presents on the cotemporaneous society requests a more profound effort from schools regarding multimodal literacy. Thus, the main purpose of this thesis is to investigate in which degree the creation of infographics can assist the multimodal literacy of youth and adults. The study carried between the years 2010 and 2013, was based in a theoretical revision about: literacy, multimodal literacy, lifelong learning, infographics, pedagogy of multimodal literacy and writing-to-learn activities; and also from a research held under the Mulheres Mil Program. The analysis of the infographics produced showed the presence of indicative elements of multimodal literacy, and also the communicative competence of the students. The activities involving the resolution of problems, performed before and after the course, indicated that there were some progress on the literacy of the students, since that the elements of design that didn’t exist in the activities before the course, were present after it. It could also be noticed a correlation between the elements used in the infographics and those present in the resolution of problems that occurred after the course. Regarding the Prezi, the assessment of the students exposed that this is a mechanism easy to understand and learn, and that it can also be used in literacy actions together with the students that possess little knowledge in computers. In addition to these studies, a statistical analysis of the auto evaluation survey was performed, and two tests were utilized: the Student's t and the effect size. The results of the Student's t tests revealed a significant statistically change among the results of the questionnaires applied before and after the course. The effect size test revealed that the deepest impact was at the dimension of those activities related to the development of multimodal texts, showing that the creation of infographics using Prezi resulted in the multimodal literacy of the students.
