These lifestyles are created and devised from the politics of the queer crowds, outlined by the following issues: the being together, relationships between men and friendships as lifestyles that can give rise to a gay culture, ethics and aesthetics. In so far as they point to the contestation of logocentrism, they highlight the traits, flows, changes and desires that intersect and affirm themselves in the festive homosocialitiesand in the assemblages of masculinities that territorialize, deterritorialize and reterritorialize processes of subjectivation of the minorities, the abject beings. From the party planners' meetings we can reflect on the constitution of ways of life that pass between gender issues and the flows and overflows of the party itself. The festive territories are made up of multiple and Dionysian landscapes where joy is constituted as a superior way of life. However, the tragic aspect of the party makes the risks, instabilities and dangers also present in the composition of its landscapes.

De nosso diálogo com os colaboradores e outras fontes referenciais deixamos um rastro vasto e interessante de possibilidades de reflexão acerca do diálogo vida na escola, vida familiar comunitária e cultura matemática / Abstract: This research was undertaken to understand how cultural practice, not always recognized as legitimate by the school, can influence school mathematical practice or otherwise, as various lifestyles of children are observed by the school. There was use of concepts related to situated learning and community of practice (LAVE; CHAIKLIN, 2001; LAVE; WENGER, 2002; among others) to establish a connection with the agreements and disagreements, congruencies and inconsistencies of the relationship of students with school mathematics culture, culture in general and the extracurricular lifestyles. It analyzed the domestic experience that intermediates other mathematical practices associated to family¿s kernel, as homeworks and the role (positive and negative) of the mediation or not by more experienced people; it also assessed the participation of children in ruled games practice/situation, taught or not by the school, and the use of money in the household and school practice. In short, it aimed to establish a link between forms of knowledge and learning mathematics in different context of human activity, especially, in the family and school context / Doutorado / Ensino e Práticas Culturais / Doutor em Educação

'n Post-modernistiese benadering tot loopbaansielkunde

Geldenhuis, Pauli 07 September 2012 (has links)
M.A. / South Africa finds itself in the socio-historical transition from the modern to the post-modern era, which influences every South African in all their life roles. One of the most prominent life roles is that of a career, which is also within a post-industrial transition state. It is imperative to develop a post-modern approach to career psychology to provide in the career needs of every individual within the given context of post-industrialisation and multiversalism. The objective of this study is therefore to define the position of career psychology in the post-modern paradigm, and to apply the Grounded Theory in developing an approach to establish career psychology in the post-industrial world of work. The research strategy consists of the Grounded Theory and more specifically the paradigm model. The post-modern approach to career psychology can be summarised as the narration of a life story, with the purpose to achieve a realistic and pro-active career choice within the context of st-industrialisation and multiversalism. The self takes a central position in the subjective and objective career contexts, and is influenced by the self s interpretation of its current and anticipated values, roles and life style. This pro-active process is future orientated, occurs in the present, and has its roots in the past. The post-modern approach to career psychology is flexible enough to integrate new or existing theories or approaches in career psychology or related disciplines.

The unattainable "betterlife" : the discourses of the homogenised South African black emerging middle-class lifestyle in Drum magazine

Hardy-Berrington, Michelle January 2011 (has links)
Drum and YOU are two general interest magazines which share the same publisher, language (English), format, and are compiled by many of the same journalists and editors. The greatest distinction between the two publications is that Drum is aimed at a specifically black readership while YOU caters for a general, cosmopolitan South African readership. With various commonalities in the production of Drum and YOU, what do the differing commodities, discourses and cultural repertoires presented in Drum in comparison to YOU communicate about the conceived black audience/s by the magazines'producers? In contrast to the dominant body of research on Drum magazine, which has been dedicated to pre-1994 editions, the investigation undertaken in this research focuses on post-apartheid editions of Drum under the commercial ownership of Media24. This also provides a unique opportunity to compare and contrast Drum and YOU which has not been extensively explored in the past. A theoretical study on some of the credible, plausible discourses circulating in Drum drew from Laden's (1997; 2003) research on black South African middle-class magazines and Steyn's (2001) studies on narratives of whiteness including colonial and apartheid policy discourses. Other theory considered to identify types of discourses included those on self-stylisation, excorporation and the historic, cultural influence of Drum in black South African identity formation. Critical discourse analysis is employed to discern the distinction and boundaries between the conceived black middle-class readerships of Drum and YOU. A multifarious content is present in Drum magazine for the diverse post-apartheid black middle-class of South Africa. Discourses of the African traditional and conservative feature side-by-side with contemporary, liberal and Western discourses; while the cultural repertoires of the bourgeois middle-class are presented beside the more modest commodities of the lower-income working class. This communicates an increasingly integrated South African consumer culture and a willing bourgeois solidarity amongst middle-class groups, creating a larger consumer class for advertisers and marketers in South Africa. In comparison to YOU, the discourses of the conservative-African-traditional provide a distinctive feature of Drum. However, this discourse is limited to realms which do not threaten the prevailing magazine culture of consumerism and the dominant global culture of Western science and reason. The other great distinction from YOU is Drum’s prominent educating and didactic function, offering an aspirant lifestyle by marketing a range of Western technologies and commodities. This is in addition to suggesting options for desirable social conduct and socially-responsible behavior.

Bidirectional Effects Between Engaged Lifestyle and Cognition in Later Life: Exploring the Moderation Hypothesis for Personality Variables.

Starkweather, Jonathan 12 1900 (has links)
Longitudinal data (N = 263) was used to investigate the bidirectional relationship between engagement (engaged lifestyle activities) and cognition (crystallized & fluid intelligence). Extroversion and openness to experience were also tested as moderators of the relationship between engagement and cognition. Results showed that the relationship between engagement at Wave 1 and cognition at Wave 2 did not differ from the relationship between cognition at Wave 1 and engagement at Wave 2. Testing for moderation with regression indicated that neither extroversion nor openness was moderating the relationship between engagement and cognition in either direction. Structural equation models provided further summary evidence that the relationships among engagement at Wave 1, extroversion, openness, and cognition at Wave 2 were not strong. However, a strong limitation to these results was the measurement error associated with a new measure of engagement.

Mutations in the serine/threonine protein kinase gene, STK11, in sporadic colorectal cancer

Engelbrecht, Sonja Teresa 04 August 2005 (has links)
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common forms of cancer in Western nations, it is however uncommon in sub-Saharan Africa. In South Africa there is an approximate ten-fold lower incidence of CRC in black patients compared to Caucasian patients. This could be due to differences in lifestyles and environment that exist between the various population groups. Underlying molecular events could also account for the difference in susceptibility to colorectal cancer. Mutations in the Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) gene, STK11, predispose to amongst others colorectal cancer. To examine the role of this gene in South African patients with CRC, DNA from 208 tumours (104 black patients, 104 Caucasian patients) was screened for STK11 mutations via PCR-SSCP analysis. In total 8 novel missense mutations, one of which was germline, were identified in seven tumours (~3.4% 7/208) from 5 black and two Caucasian patients. One tumour from a Caucasian patient was found to be a compound heterozygote. Peutz-Jeghers syndrome was thus diagnosed in 0.96% (1/104) of black patients via a germ line mutation. Thus 4.8% (5/104) of tumours from black patients and 1.9% (2/104) of tumours from Caucasian patients harbour STK11 missense mutations. In addition, 3 synonymous and 5 intronic mutations were detected in a further 73 tumours from black patients, whereas only 3 synonymous and 5 intronic mutations were detected in 25 tumours from Caucasian patients. The present study is the sixth to suggest that somatic mutation of the STK11 gene in sporadic colorectal cancer of Caucasians is an infrequent event. However, this is only the second study of a non-Western population to show somatic mutations in sporadic cases of CRC. Furthermore with regard to the anatomic site of tumours with somatic missense mutations, the present study found that for black patients 7.69% (2/26) of the left-sided tumours, 2% (1/50) of rectal tumours and 4.54% (1/22) of right-sided tumours harboured mutations. Thus the frequency of missense mutations of left-sided CRC tumours compared to right-sided tumours was not significantly elevated (÷2-test, 1df, p = 0.881) in the black population. This study represents the first investigation into the role of the STK11 gene in putative sporadic cases of CRC from both black and Caucasian South African patients. The observed mutations clearly show that mutations of the STK11 gene are infrequent in the CRCs of the South African Caucasian population, and more frequent in the South African black population. This may be a reflection of the differences in lifestyle and incidence of CRC in the different populations. / Dissertation (MSc (Human Genetics))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Genetics / unrestricted

Para além das osteoporose: experiências e modos de levar a vida de mulheres entre 50 e 59 anos / Going beyond osteoporosis: experiences and ways of living life in women between 50 and 59 years

Mazza, Selene Regina 19 March 2012 (has links)
This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the experiences and ways of taking the lives of women between 50 and 59 years in order to reflect on the experience of the process of aging and sicken against osteoporosis symptomatic invisibility, presenting as a contextual reference specific time course of life of these women. The theoretical and methodological approach is based on the relationship between the sociology of everyday life and emotions, for exploration and interpretation of trajectories, social bookmarks and lifestyles that are processed in the dynamics of everyday life of this socio and cultural group. Through personal stories, the sociabilities in interactive contexts and meaning of the body as symbolic and narrative process, give us a subjective categories ordering the life and social practices of these women in their aging process, presenting them as subjects beyond their disease (osteoporosis). It is used on the conceptualization of the life course viewed from the production, social and political systems to guide the understanding of the experiences and life trajectories of women in this age group. The body is presented as a translation of ways of eating, caring and other activities of daily living, showing symbolic values and conceptual framework on ways of being, being and doing, where emotions are driven in intersubjective processes, and various social contexts. In the investigative and analytical field, as an empirical instrument, we used the waiting room of a health center in Fortaleza, and individual interviews to collect and analyze information in order to provide uniqueness and similarities that make up their experiences and ways of life. The reports portrayed the experience of a painful body not linked to osteoporosis, but the precarious emotional, social and financial situations that encompass the day to day

The effectiveness of diabetes self-management education training among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus in rural Nigeria

Said, Yusuf January 2021 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) constitutes the highest percentage of diabetes cases. It has become a serious global problem due to rapid cultural and social changes, ageing, increasing urbanisation, dietary changes, reduced physical activity and unhealthy behavioural lifestyles. Furthermore, unidentified diabetes has been found to be common in many parts of Africa, including rural Nigeria, due to factors such as poor accessibility to health facilities, cultural barriers and high rates of health illiteracy. The overall aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the Diabetes Self Management Education (DSME) programme among individuals with T2DM in Jigawa State, Nigeria.
