EFFECTS OF AGRICULTURAL PRACTICE ON THE WATER QUALITY OF LOW-ORDER STREAMS IN THE BEAVER VALLEY WATERSHED

Dieleman, Catherine M. 04 1900 (has links)

Eutrophication from agricultural runoff is a global issue, and can often result in degradation and loss of aquatic habitat. The overall objective of this study is to gain a better understanding of the factors that influence variation in water chemistry of low-order streams in an agricultural watershed. The first chapter finds significant differences between the effects of livestock- vs and crop-based operations on water chemistry while modeling the relationship between independent landscape variables and major water-quality parameters in an agroecosystem. I also determine significant differences exist in dependent variables among seasons and are best described by the agriculturally relevant calendar (ARC). In Chapter 2, I compared the effectiveness of discrete and continuous sampling programs for monitoring the impacts of cattle disturbances on water quality. I found that daily total phosphorus (TP) concentrations (integrated sample taken every 6 hours) were not significantly correlated with precipitation and were significantly lower than discrete water samples. Turbidity readings (recorded every half hour) showed spikes that corresponded with cattle hydration events and increased levels of nutrients through backwash. . In Chapter 3, I find a significant relationship between periphyton growth and the level of primary nutrients (TP, soluble reactive phosphorus, total-ammonia nitrogen). Thus, for low-order streams influenced by small family farms, acrylic rods may be an inexpensive indicator of excess limiting nutrients. In such environments stream length may be a stronger measure of streams than stream order since total nitrogen, TP and pH were significantly correlated with stream length.
/ Master of Science (MSc)

Recovery of Channel Morphology and Benthic Macroinvertebrate Assemblages after Livestock Exclusion

Ranganath, Sheila Casaba 13 July 2007 (has links)
Measurements in paired stream reaches with and without livestock access in southwestern Virginia suggest that livestock exclusion practices installed on short, isolated stream reaches result in improved geomorphic and riparian vegetation condition, but do not significantly improve the benthic macroinvertebrate assemblage. Detailed longitudinal and cross-sectional surveys, pebble counts, and rapid geomorphic assessments were conducted on contiguous, paired stream reaches (5 pairs) with and without active livestock access across a range of time since livestock exclusion was implemented. In addition, bank characteristics were quantified by measuring groundcover biomass, shrub crown volume, tree density and diameter, soil bulk density, and particle-size analysis. Benthic macroinvertebrates were collected with a D-frame dip net and quantified using the Virginia Stream Condition Index (SCI), and other benthic macroinvertebrate metrics. We determined that: 1) small lengths of livestock exclusion can significantly increase channel depth and decrease the width to depth ratio, and increase groundcover vegetation growth, but do not significantly alter benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages; and, 2) qualitative geomorphic assessment results showed trends over time since exclusion (0 to greater than 50 years), but not in any of the other parameters evaluated. These observations suggest that a more targeted and holistic approach that addresses watershed-wide impacts must be implemented to restore aquatic habitat. An assessment of the effects of dietary oil supplementation on fetal survival in gilts at 40 days of gestation

Rigau, Alberto Pérez 19 September 2009 (has links)
Eighty-six crossbred (Duroc x Yorkshire) gilts were used in two trials (50 gilts in Trial 1 and 36 gilts in Trial 2) for an assessment of the effect of supplemental dietary fat during early gestation on fetal survival, fetal development, and fatty acid concentration in gilt plasma and fetal head and body. Three diets contained 4% (w/w) added fat either as coconut, soybean, or fish (menhaden) oils. A fourth diet was used as a control. On d 37 to 45 postbreeding, gilts were slaughtered and numerous fetal and ovarian measurements made. Two sets of four randomly selected fetuses per gilt from Trial 1 were prepared. Blood samples from each gilt were obtained on the day of slaughter for determination of the plasma fatty acid profile. Across both trials, percentage fetal survival did not differ according to treatment, but in Trial 2 fetal survival was higher (P < .06) for gilts fed fish oil, compared with the controls. The fatty acid profile of plasma of gilts and the conceptus tissues were similar; both were influenced by the fatty acid concentration of the diets. The ratio of n-3/n-6 fatty acids was higher in conceptus tissue than in maternal plasma and the ratio was higher (P < .05) for the fish oil diet compared with the other diets. The relatively high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids in fetal tissues supports the hypothesis that omega-3 fatty acids play a role in the development of the pig conceptus and contributes to improve fetal survival. However, the high percentage fetal survival observed in all the treatments may have masked benefits of supplemental oil. / Master of Science

Campylobacter jejuni infection versus contamination of turkeys and chickens

Friedman, Genevieve W. 23 December 2009 (has links)
This study was conducted to determine the extent in which Campylobacter jejuni colonized live birds would survive evisceration and contaminate the processed carcasses. Birds were infected with a marker strain of Campylobacter jejuni and allowed to grow to market age. Cloacal and fecal samples were analyzed to determine the level of Campylobacter jejuni present in the live bird. Prior to slaughter, birds were selectively subjected to two different temperatures (21 and 32°C) and three different times of feed withdrawal for chickens (3, 6,and 9 hours and turkeys 0, 4, and 8 hours). Birds were then slaughtered and the carcasses were sampled to determine the level of Campylobacter jejuni that survived. Results indicated a difference between chickens and turkeys, especially regarding the infective dose and bacterial survival rates. No significant differences in carcass contamination due to feed withdrawal times at either temperature were noted. The correlation of fecal samples with cloacal samples was significant for year 2 with r = .53 (p .04). For turkeys, the correlations were not significant. A longitudinal study of turkeys showed that the percentage of birds infected with Campylobacter jejuni peaked when the birds were 5-7 weeks old. The amount of Campylobacter contamination in each turkey peaked when the birds were 5 weeks old and then dropped off quickly. / Master of Science

Evaluation of Bureau of Land Management Protocols for Monitoring Stream Condition

Johnson, Laura Young 10 November 2005 (has links)
The goal of the Aquatic Indicators of Land Condition (AILC) project is to develop analytical tools that integrate land condition information with stream condition for improved watershed management within the United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Based on the goal of the AILC, two objectives for this study were: to determine the effect of four GIS-derived distance measurements on potential relationships between common BLM landscape stressors (mining and grazing) and changes in benthic macroinvertebrate community structure; and to assess the effectiveness of individual questions on a commonly-used Bureau-wide qualitative stream assessment protocol, the proper functioning condition (PFC) assessment. The four GIS distance measurements assessed for biotic relevance included: straight-line distance, slope distance, flow length, and travel time. No significant relationships were found between the measured distance to stressor and macroinvertebrate community structure. However, the hydrological relevance of flow length and travel time are logically superior to straight-line and slope distance and should be researched further. Several individual questions in the PFC assessment had statistically significant relationships with the final reach ratings and with field-measured characteristics. Two of the checklist questions were significantly related to the number of cow droppings. This may indicate a useful and efficient measure of stream degradation due to grazing. The handling and use of the PFC assessment within the BLM needs further documentation and examination for scientific viability, and the addition of quantitative measurements to the PFC in determining restoration potential would be desirable. / Master of Science

OPTIMIZACIÓN DE DISEÑO DE GRANJAS AVÍCOLAS DE POLLOS

Bustamante García, Eliseo 07 January 2016 (has links)
Tesis por compendio / [EN] Intensive (broiler) poultry farming is a strategic sector for the economy and development of many countries and regions, including Spain and the Valencian Community region. Intensive production consists of keeping the animals in specific buildings (broiler buildings) under a controlled indoor microclimate. Two main options are found regarding the ventilation systems: production in broiler buildings with natural ventilation and production in broiler buildings with mechanical ventilation (commonly with negative depression by exhaust fans). Inadequate design is the main cause of thermal stress and the mortality of broilers. In this sense, one solution to decrease the broilers' heat stress and mortality consists of assisting in their biological thermoregulation by increasing the air velocity over them. In this PhD dissertation, the ventilation (ranges of the air velocity and its distribution, mainly at the level and plane where the broilers are located) in the main mechanical ventilation systems installed in the broiler buildings is characterised and analysed. Despite the magnitude of the current difficulties (broilers' thermal stress and mortality) and society's sensitivity regarding aspects of animal welfare, to date, the different mechanical ventilation systems in the different types of broiler building have not been characterised and analysed with scientific scrupulousness. In this PhD dissertation, the three most relevant types have been studied: cross, tunnel and single-sided. The methodological approach has been very similar in all the cases of study: some measurements by means a multi-sensor system (with our own original design and building) has been used for isotemporal recordings, the corresponding Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations have been carried out and finally these simulations have been validated. These validations were carried out by means of two statistical techniques: by means of linear regression techniques and by means of a study of the significance (in an analysis of the variance) for the method used (sensors or CFD) in each different proposed validation model. Having validated these CFD results, CFD techniques can safely be used to characterise and analyse the ventilation in all the indoor space of the broiler buildings (sensors only allow it to be characterised in their physical locations). The first case studied involves a broiler building which has a cross mechanical ventilation system (commonplace in Mediterranean climates) installed. The conclusions from this study show that this ventilation system is adequate for broiler rearing during nearly the whole year in mild climatic locations (e.g. Mediterranean climate). However, on certain days or in periods of heat (summer), it would not be adequate because it cannot reach high enough air velocity values to reduce the heat stress on the broilers. The second case studied is a broiler building with tunnel mechanical ventilation installed. The conclusions from this study show that it is less suitable than the first one analysed (cross mechanical ventilation) for broiler rearing over nearly the whole year in mild climatic locations. However, on certain days or in periods of heat (summer), it is very suitable because it can reach higher air velocity values to reduce the heat stress on the broilers. The third case studied is a broiler building with single-sided mechanical ventilation installed. The conclusions from this study show that this ventilation system is suitable for broiler rearing almost throughout the year in mild climatic locations. However, on certain days or in periods of heat (summer), it would be not adequate because it cannot reach high enough air velocity values to reduce the heat stress.
