The relationship between trainer locus of control and training style orientation

Department of Industrial Psychology / Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the current South African context the Government places a great deal of emphasis on the importance of adult training and development as a solution for addressing many social and economic problems. It is therefore important to investigate all aspects regarding the training context in order to optimise learning. The trainer plays an integral part within this system. Although literature regards the trainer as very important for training success, very little substantial research has been documented with regards to the influential factors on the training style orientation that trainers use when training adults. In order to investigate this problem, a study of the relevant literature is done. The following topics are examined for this purpose: The training system and the components thereof, andragogy and pedagogy as training style orientations, several trait theories of personality as the basis of the study, locus of control as a personality trait, and the influence of personality and more specifically locus of control within work-related settings. Three questionnaires were administered on a sample of 100 respondents, i.e. a Demographic questionnaire, the Training Style Inventory and the Locus of Control Inventory in order to generate data to investigate the research problem and hypotheses. The Demographic Questionnaire collected data regarding gender, age, qualifications, training experience, ethnicity, subject area of the training content, and type of organisation. The Training Style Inventory measured the training style orientation of the trainer respondents, and the Locus of Control Inventory was used to measure the locus of control of respondents. The results indicate support for the hypothesis that there is a statistical significant correlation between locus of control and training style orientation. More specifically, there is a statistically significant correlation between internal locus of control and the andragogical training style orientation, and also between external locus of control and the pedagogical training style orientation. The main objectives of this study were successfully achieved and documented. Conclusions and recommendations for further research are made. It is recommended that future research replicate the study with a greater and random sample of respondents, within the South African context. Also, investigating the effectiveness of the trainers as a result of their locus of control and training style orientation is an interesting possibility for future research. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die Suid-Afrikaanse regering plaas groot klem op die belangrikheid van volwasse opleiding en ontwikkeling in die huidige Suid-Afrikaanse konteks as 'n moontlike oplossing vir etlike sosiale en ekonomiese probleme. In 'n poging om leer te optimeer, is dit dus noodsaaklik om alle aspekte binne die opleidingskonteks deeglik in oënskou te neem. Die opleier speel 'n baie belangrike rol in die sukses van die opleidingsintervensie. Alhoewel die opleier binne die literatuur wel as In belangrike rolspeler in die sukses van opleidingsintervensies geag word, is daar baie min navorsing gedokumenteer oor die faktore wat die opleidingstyl wat opleiers tydens intervensies gebruik, beïnvloed. 'n Studie van die beskikbare literatuur ondersoek hierdie probleem. Die volgende onderwerpe is vir die doelondersoek: Die opleidingstelsel en die komponente daarvan, andragogie en pedagogie as opleidingstyloriëntasies, verskeie persoonlikheidstrekteorieë as die grondslag van die studie, lokus van beheer as 'n persoonlikheidstrek, en die invloed van persoonlikheid en meer spesifiek lokus van beheer binne die werksplek. Die data wat nodig is om die navorsingsprobleem te ondersoek en die hipoteses te toets, is ingesamel deur 100 respondente elk drie vraelyste te laat voltooi, naamlik 'n Demografiese vraelys, 'n Opleidingstylvraelys en 'n Lokus van Beheer-vraelys. Die demografiese vraelys het inligting ingesamel ten opsigte van geslag, ouderdom, kwalifikasies, opleidingservaring, etnisiteit, onderwerp van die opleidingsinhoud en die tipe organisasie betrokke. Die Opleidingstylvraelys het die opleidingstyloriëntasie van die opleiers wat deelgeneem het aan die studie gemeet, en die Lokus van Beheer vraelys is gebruik om die lokus van beheer van respondente te bepaal. Die resultate bevestig die hipotese dat daar 'n statisties beduidende verband bestaan tussen lokus van beheer en opleidingstyloriëntasie. Daar bestaan verder 'n statisties beduidende verband tussen interne lokus van beheer en 'n andragogiese opleidingstyloriëntasie, en ook tussen eksterne lokus van beheer en 'n pedagogiese opleidingstyloriëntasie. Die hoofdoelwitte van hierdie studie is suksesvol bereik en gedokumenteer. Gevolgtrekkings en aanbevelings vir toekomstige navorsing word ook gemaak. Die aanbeveling is dat toekomstige navorsing hierdie studie herhaal binne die Suid- Afrikaanse konteks. Die studie behoort ook 'n groter en ewekansige steekproef in te sluit. Die effektiwiteit van die opleiers as 'n resultaat van hul lokus van beheer en opleidingstyloriëntasie is ook 'n interessante moontlikheid vir verdere navorsing.

O lugar como referência de aprendizagem no ensino de geografia trajetória docente no estado de Santa Catarina objetiva a leitura do mundo a partir do espaço vivido e cotidiano dos/das estudantes da Educação Básica, na perspectiva de marcar a identidade e pertencimento de ser e estar no mundo. O estudo é uma narrativa de minha história escolar enquanto estudante e professora, com experiências vivenciadas em diversos municípios do estado de Santa Catarina. Na trajetória docente relata o trabalho no magistério público da rede estadual de ensino e na rede municipal de Paulo Lopes/SC, percorrendo pela educação geográfica que descortina a formação dentro da profissão. Afirma que a partir da experiência geográfica do lugar dos/das estudantes envolvidos nas suas rotinas e vivências cotidianas é possível ensinar Geografia e alongar o olhar para a leitura integrada do mundo. Demonstra a diversidade de percepções do lugar trazidas nas vivências das crianças e adolescentes, bem como nos referenciais teóricos do ensino de Geografia e nos exemplos de atividades pedagógicas. A avaliação e aprendizagem geográfica compõem um enredo de condução do conceito de lugar como prelúdio ao conhecimento geográfico durante toda a narrativa. Expressa a realidade do exercício da docência considerando uma atividade de interações humanas; no reconhecimento da diversidade no espaço social escola. / Locus as learning reference in Geography teaching. Teaching trajectory in Santa Catarina State. It aims the reading of the world through elementary students living places and their everyday lives, in the perspective of marking their identity of being and belonging by becoming and being in the world. This study is a narrative of the researcher’s school story as a student and teacher with many experiences lived in different cities of Santa Catarina State. In her teaching carrier she tells about her work at the Educational public State system and at the Educational Public system of Paulo Lopes city passing through geographic education that reveals her vocational training. She states that from students’ geographical locus experiences engaged in their everyday lives, it is possible to teach Geography and extend their view to an integrated reading of the world. She shows the variety of local world perceptions brought by children and teenagers life experiences, as well, in the Geography teaching theoretical references and by pedagogical activity examples. The evaluation and geographic learning consist of a narrative that drives the concept of locus as the prelude to geographical knowledge during all the narrative. It expresses the reality of teaching practice considering it as an activity of human interactions in the acknowledgment of the diversity in the social place-school.

Etude de la correspondance génotype/phénotype dans la dyslexie de développement : recherche de facteurs de prédisposition génétique à partir de l'étude de familles multiplex / Genotype/phenotype correlation in developmental dyslexia : looking for genetic risk factors through the analysis of multiplex families

La dyslexie est le plus fréquent des troubles neurodéveloppementaux de l’enfant. A ce jour, 9 loci de susceptibilité ont été identifiés parmi lesquels DYX 9 en Xq27. Nous avons réalisé la première étude de liaison française suivie de l’analyse de gènes candidats sur l’ensemble du génome de 58 sujets issus de 12 familles multiplex pour la dyslexie, en utilisant un phénotype catégoriel. Des résultats significatifs sont apparus pour la région Xq27.3, au sein de DYX9. Le Lod score multipoint maximal obtenu était 3.884 entre rs12558359 et rs454992. Dans cette région, les séquences codantes de 7 gènes candidats ayant un rôle dans le développement cérébral (CXORF1, CXORF51, SLITRK2, FMR1, FMR2, ASFMR1, FMR1NB), ont été étudiées à la recherche de mutations. Nous avons également étudié les séquences 5’ non codantes des gènes FMR1 et FMR2. Aucune mutation n’a été retrouvée. Ces résultats de liaison de la région Xq27.3, au locus XFRA, dans une population française confirment la région DYX9 comme région d’intérêt dans la dyslexie de développement. / Dyslexia is a frequent neurodevelopmental learning disorder. To date, 9 susceptibility loci have been determined among which DYX9 located in Xq27. We performed the first French SNP linkage study followed by candidate gene investigation in dyslexia by studying 12 multiplex families (58 subjects) with at least two children affected, according to categorical restrictive criteria for phenotype definition. Significant results emerged on Xq27.3 within DYX9. The maximum multipoint LOD score reached 3,884 between rs12558359 and rs454992. Within this region, 7 candidate genes were investigated for mutations in exonic sequences (CXORF1, CXORF51, SLITRK2, FMR1, FMR2, ASFMR1, FMR1NB), all having a role during brain development. We further looked for 5’UTR trinucleotide repeats in FMR1 and FMR2 genes. No mutation or polymorphism co-segregating with dyslexia was found. This finding in French families with Dyslexia showed significant linkage on Xq27.3 enclosing FRAXA, and consequently confirmed the DYX9 region as a robust susceptibility locus. We reduced the previously described interval from 6.8 Mb (DXS1227- DXS8091) to 4Mb also disclosing a higher Lod score.
