Investigating the role of groundwater - surface water connectivity in supporting non-perennial river systems, Sandveld, Western Cape, South AfricaPietersen, Raven Jesse January 2021 (has links)
>Magister Scientiae - MSc / Non-perennial rivers are characterised by a discontinuous and variable hydrological flow regime which may retreat to form isolated pools along the watercourse during prolonged dry periods. The resulting spatio-temporal variability in hydrological characteristics provides support for a variety of ecological habitats which promote species richness and biodiversity. It is well established that groundwater may offer flow supplementation to perennial river flow throughout the year as baseflow, while fewer authors have unpacked the nuances of the importance of groundwater in dynamics of water persistence and the conditions that determine non-perennial pool reoccurrence. This study explores river-aquifer interaction of the Verlorenvlei catchment within the Western Cape Province of South Africa as a case study in order to create an improved hydrogeological understanding of groundwater’s role in non-perennial rivers to improve of water management practices. A multi-method approach was designed to fulfil this aim. In addition to desktop literature review and in-field sampling of water for environmental tracers, a water presence, groundwater level, and geophysical survey was conducted in order to develop a conceptual understanding of the multi-scale interaction occurring within the Verlorenvlei basin. Results of the isotopic and chemical analysis of water sources revealed the water origin and groundwater flow dynamics for the Verlorenvlei. The contribution of groundwater from Table Mountain Group related, fault-driven flow to the groundwater balance of the Verlorenvlei creates regional gaining conditions. Local gaining conditions within the Verlorenvlei river are created through lateral input of upwelling groundwater which moves downgradient with the topography as evidenced by the hydrogeological and geophysical survey. Using the Verlorenvlei as a case study, a contribution is made to the knowledge of the role of groundwater in non-perennial rivers. The results presented in this study indicate that where basin hydrogeology allows, groundwater may play an important role in the supply of water to non-perennial pools, especially during periods of minimal rainfall. The interaction mechanisms of this groundwater contribution within non-perennial rivers are site specific and spatially variable. Basin hydrogeology, subsurface stratigraphy and water availability are key limiting factors to interaction in non-perennial rivers. Future research aimed at generating robust information on discrete zones of water presence along non-perennial rivers may allow for better assessment of the potential vulnerability of these areas to water loss. Where these areas are fed by groundwater, to accommodate for their vulnerability, groundwater capture maps may allow for investigation of the local impact of groundwater use on these areas.

The psychology of mediation : A qualitative study on mediation in EthiopiaEriksson, Sofia January 2015 (has links)
The objective of this bachelor thesis was to examine and analyse the psychological factors that were important in mediation processes on local, regional, national and international levels in Ethiopia. The research questions were what these psychological factors were and how they affected the mediation process. A qualitative, semi-structured method was used and six informants with experience as mediators have been interviewed in Ethiopia. The psychological factors identified were self-esteem, losing face, ability of letting go, and mirroring. The conclusion was that this research confirmed the findings of much of the previous research, in regards to the psychological factors active in the process. The research also revealed that the psychological factors needed to be considered in the light of the Ethiopian culture and it´s collective nature.

Familjemedlemmars erfarenheter av att förlora ett barn i cancer : En litteraturbaserad studie / Family members' experiences of losing a child in cancer : A study based on scientific studiesThulin, Theresé, Strauss, Julia January 2017 (has links)
Background: Every year 250,000 children worldwide receive the unimaginable diagnosis of cancer. A cancer diagnosis inflicts a major impact on the family situation. They must deal with an entirely, both emotionally and socially new situation they are not prepared for. It is of great importance that the nurse has adequate knowledge to be able to provide the best possible care to the entire family. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the family members' experiences of losing a child in cancer. Method: A method to contribute to evidence-based nursing with ground in analysis of qualitative research was performed to get a better understanding of families' experiences. An analysis of thirteen qualitative articles was carried out. The analysis resulted in five main themes and sixteen subthemes. Results: The results of the study showed that families losing a child in cancer are having a heart-breaking time. They described combative feelings between hope and despair. The mothers often took care of the sick child at home and the fathers kept their minds busy while working. The families put all their own needs and sorrows aside. The siblings felt lonely since the parents took care of the sick child. After the passing, the family kept a bond to the deceased child through memories and dreams. Conclusion: The families experienced a greater need of support from the nurses and the hospital staff, during the time when the child was sick and after the death.

Vinnarskolor & Förlorarskolor : En kritisk stuide av vithet i skolorganisationerWilly, Do, Yasmine, Nechma January 2015 (has links)

Does keeping score matter : the relationship between parents' achievement goals, attitudes about winning, and game behaviorJohnson, James E. January 2001 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine parents' achievement goal orientations, attitudes about winning, and game behaviors between a youth basketball league that kept score and a youth basketball league that did not keep score. Specifically, this study sought to answer four research hypotheses. First, this study hypothesized that parental achievement goal orientation would have a significant positive relationship with type of league. Second, parents' attitudes about winning would have a positive significant relationship with type of league. Third, a significant difference would emerge between attitudes about winning and achievement goal orientations in each league. Finally, it was hypothesized that the scoring league would demonstrate significantly more negative parental behaviors than parents in the non-scoring league.A sample of 69 parents/guardians in the non-scoring league, and 42 parents/guardians in the scoring league, participated in this study. Parents' behavior was observed and recorded over four games in each league. During the final games in each league, parents were given a series of questionnaires assessing descriptive information, achievement goals, and attitudes about winning. Results using Pearson Correlations (p<.05) suggested there was no relationship between parent's achievement goals and league type, but a significant relationship did exist between parents' attitudes about winning and league type. These results indicate that although both leagues were primarily task oriented, the scoring league parents valued the concept of winning more than the non-scoring league. Additionally, a 2 x 2 x 2 Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) revealed a significant main effect (F=7.836, p<.0001) between parents' attitudes about winning, achievement goals, and league, confirming a difference in parental responses between each league. Because the behaviors observed in both leagues was overwhelmingly positive, parental behavior in this study did not differ according to positive or negative behaviors. Parents in both leagues demonstrated overwhelmingly positive behaviors throughout the recording process. The non-scoring league, however, displayed significantly more positive nonverbal behaviors than the scoring league. From these results, it would appear that keeping score does matter in terms of its relationship to parents' values and behaviors. / School of Physical Education
