Modulation of Neural Mirroring by Sensorimotor Experiences: Evidence from Action Observation and Execution

Quandt, Lorna January 2013 (has links)
A recent line of inquiry has examined a specific question about how an observer's own experiences with actions may change how his or her brain processes those actions when they are subsequently observed. In short, how does prior experience with action affect the subsequent perception of others' actions? The current study investigated this question using electroencephalography (EEG) to test the hypothesis that receiving experience with an action would subsequently lead to different activation of sensorimotor cortex depending on the predicted consequences of observed actions. While EEG was recorded, three groups of participants watched video clips showing an actor lifting objects, and then each group received information about the sensorimotor properties (i.e., weight) of the objects. One group received extended sensorimotor experience with the objects (EE group), a second group received brief sensorimotor experience with the objects (BE group), and the third group read written information describing the objects' weights (semantic information, SI group). Following the experience, participants again viewed the video clips. Time-frequency analyses showed that for participants in the EE and BE groups, EEG during the observation of action was sensitive to the predicted sensorimotor consequences of the observed action. This was not found for the SI group. As well, all three groups showed increased alpha and beta suppression following experience. Overall, these results lead to two main conclusions: 1) experience with action facilitates subsequent neural mirroring processes, and 2) sensorimotor experience leads to differential activation of the sensorimotor cortex depending on the predicted consequences of observed action. / Psychology

Exploration of the Mirroring Hypothesis as an Early Design Phase Parameter

Alexandra Marie Dukes (6632951) 11 June 2019 (has links)
<div>The mirroring hypothesis states the organization architecture and the product architecture tend to “mirror” or mimic each other. There are two types of investigations into this phenomenon: descriptive and normative. Descriptive studies ask whether mirroring is present in an organization/product pair. Normative studies ask whether mirroring affects the performance of an organization/product pair. Much of the mirroring hypothesis literature claims to observe mirroring or claims mirroring improves the performance of the product. While there is still work to be done in the descriptive and normative realms of mirroring hypothesis research, there is a distinct gap in research investigating mirroring in the design phase of products and whether it can be used as a strategy during that phase. This work aims to demonstrate that differently mirrored organization/product pairs working the same example problem produce different design solutions. This demonstration leads into an investigation on where in the life cycle mirroring would be most useful as a design parameter when designing a product. The results of this thesis show that for this specific example problem, mirroring has an effect on the design solutions, and given a Department of Defense acquisition life cycle, there are opportunities where mirroring could be advantageous to use as a design strategy. This work challenges others interested in the topic to not just ask why does mirroring occur in design, but how can it be used to make the design better.</div>

A Boolean Function Based Approach to Nearest Neighbor Finding

Hsiao, Yuan-shu 29 June 2005 (has links)
With the rapid advances in technologies, strategies for efficiently operating the spatial data are needed. The spatial data consists of points, lines, rectangles, regions, surface, and volumes. In this thesis, we focus on the region data. There are many important and efficient operations for the region data, such as neighbor finding, rotation, and mirroring. The nearest neighbor (NN) finding is frequently used in geographic information system (GIS). We can find the specific point (e.g., a park, a department store, etc.) that is the closest to our position in geographical information systems. In any representation for the region data, it is not instinctive and easy for nearest neighbor finding, since the coordinate information has been lost. Voros, Chen, and Chang have proposed the strategies for the nearest neighbor finding based on the quadtree in eight directions. Chen and Chang have proposed the nearest neighbor finding based on the Peano curves. These strategies for the nearest neighbor finding based on the quadtree and the Peano curve use a looping process, which is time-consuming. On the other hand, in recent years, many researchers have also focused on finding efficient strategies for the rotating and mirroring operations, which is useful when the animation is performed by computers. The boolean function-based encoding is a considerable amount of space-saving with respect to the other binary image representation. The CBLQ representation saves memory space as compared to the other binary image representations that have proposed the strategies of the set operations. However, the processes for obtaining the rotated or mirrored code based on these two representations are time-consuming, since the coordinate information of all pixels has been lost. Therefore, in this thesis, first, for the nearest neighbor finding based on the quadtrees and the Peano curve, we propose the strategy which uses the bitwise and arithmetic operations, and it is more efficient than the strategies based on the looping processes. Next, we propose efficient strategies for rotating and mirroring images based on the boolean function-based encoding and constant bit-length linear quadtrees (CBLQ) representations. From our simulation study, first, we show that our strategies based on the quadtree and the Peano curve require the least CPU-time and our strategy based on the Hilbert curve requires the least total time (the CPU-time + the I/O time) among the strategies for the nearest neighbor finding based on the quadtree and the three space-filling curves. Next, in most of cases, when the black density is no larger than 50%, the CPU-time based on the boolean function-based encoding is less than that based on CBLQ.

Organizational Identity in Practice? : -How theoretical concepts of Organizational Identity are perceived in the empirical setting of Arla Foods

Maritz, Louise, Jarne, Sarah January 2014 (has links)
An organization’s internal processes of identity management is argued to influence its communication, which in turn influence the perceived reputation of the organization. The aim of this study is to investigate how the organizational identity is reflected upon and perceived integrated in employees’ daily work. This is done through applying the internal factors of a theoretical model, comprising of identity, culture and image, at an empirical setting. Literature on organizational identity in relation to organizational culture and organizational image is reviewed followed by conducting 12 semi structured interviews with managers from the marketing and human resource departments at Arla Foods in Sweden. The findings suggest that although employees reflect on the identity, there is a gap between reflection and action, meaning that the identity is not necessarily integrated in practice in the daily work due to different understandings of the organizational culture. In relation to the model, it is suggested that culture may not be so clearly connected to identity, whereas image and identity are very closely related. Also, the context in which the employees conduct their work is shown through the empirical setting, to be important for how employees reflect upon the identity.

The psychology of mediation : A qualitative study on mediation in Ethiopia

Eriksson, Sofia January 2015 (has links)
The objective of this bachelor thesis was to examine and analyse the psychological factors that were important in mediation processes on local, regional, national and international levels in Ethiopia. The research questions were what these psychological factors were and how they affected the mediation process. A qualitative, semi-structured method was used and six informants with experience as mediators have been interviewed in Ethiopia. The psychological factors identified were self-esteem, losing face, ability of letting go, and mirroring. The conclusion was that this research confirmed the findings of much of the previous research, in regards to the psychological factors active in the process. The research also revealed that the psychological factors needed to be considered in the light of the Ethiopian culture and it´s collective nature.

De Simone, Adriana 26 May 2010 (has links)
As traduções adequadas a ambos os termos seria sentircom (Mitfühlung) e sentirdentro (Einfühlung) / Text not informed by the author

Study analyzed the work as the author goes through the space-time dimension, the IDs and Social representations and the boundaries between cultures. Our study addressed also traces of hybridization, as well as the weaknesses that emerge from the confrontation established by temporal and spatial duplicity that produces an in-between place and the ambivalence between dream and reality. This study aimed to also show the imaginary questions and fragmented narrative, written at the same time, circular in shape and zigzag in the mirroring was a very used by the author resource, requiring an attentive and participatory reader. We tried to emphasize that the clash between the historical past and the re-elaboration of work done by writing Mia Couto, resize the memory files revealing to us a culturally hybrid nation, in a constant identity displacement process.

Some things bear repeating: experiments in performative micro-curating 97 years after the case of Mr. Mutt

Dahle, Sigrid 11 September 2013 (has links)
I conduct a series of experiments culminating in a gallery exhibition, I Never Stopped Being A Curator, which investigate and reinterpret what it means to ‘care’ and ‘profane’ in the context of an expanded notion of curatorial practice. I call what I’m doing ‘performative micro-curating,’ a playfully performative practice with precedents dating back to Marcel Duchamp and The Richard Mutt Case. More specifically, I’m interpreting and practising performative micro-curating as a relational, meta-conceptual art practice that uses mirroring and repetition as a method for posing questions, making knowledge and forging social bonds, while, at the same time, dissolving the boundaries that customarily distinguish artmaking from curating.
