The Importance of Controlling Composition to Tailor the Properties of Magnetic Thin Films

Frisk, Andreas January 2016 (has links)
Many physical properties, for example structural or magnetic, of a material are directly dependent on elemental composition. Tailoring of properties through highly accurate composition control is possible in thin films. This work exemplifies such tailoring. A short review is given of the current status for research in the area of permanent magnets, focusing on rare earth element free alternatives, where FeNi in the L10 phase is a possible candidate. Epitaxial FeNi L10 thin films were successfully synthesized by magnetron sputtering deposition of monoatomic layers of Fe and Ni on HF-etched Si(001) substrates with Cu or Cu100-xNix/Cu buffers. The in-plane lattice parameter aCuNi of the Cu100-xNix buffer layer was tuned by the Ni content. Through matching of aFeNi to aCuNi, the strain state (c/a)FeNi was controlled, where c is the out-of-plane lattice parameter. The 001 reflection indicative of chemical order, as measured by resonant x-ray diffraction, was in most cases split in two peaks due to a composition modulation of Fe and Ni. This chemical disorder contributed to that the uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy, KU≈0.35 MJ/m3, was smaller than predicted. In later experiments the composition modulation could partly be compensated for. Remaining discrepancies with respect to predicted KU values were attributed to additional disorder induced by surface roughness of the buffer layer. The interface sharpness between Fe and Ni was explored by producing epitaxial symmetric multilayers with individual layer thicknesses n = 4-48 monolayers (ML). For n ≤ 8 ML the films had pure fcc structure, with antiferromagnetic Fe layers. For n ≥ 8 ML the Fe layers relaxed to bcc structure. A combinatorial sputter chamber, which has the capability to deposit samples with composition and thickness gradients, was assembled. A model for simulation of composition and thickness across large substrates, for the conditions in this chamber, is presented. The model is verified by comparison to experimental data. Some challenges inherent in combinatorial sputtering are discussed, and two experimental studies employing the technique are presented as examples. These investigated magnetic and structural properties of Tb-Co films, with 7-95 at.% Tb, and of amorphous and crystalline ternary gradient Co-Fe-Zr films, respectively.

Molecular Dynamics in the Liquid Phase by FT-NMR, FT-IR and Laser Raman Lineshape Analysis

Chen, Fu-Tseng Andy 08 1900 (has links)
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) provides a convenient probe for the study of molecular reorientation in liquids because nuclear spin-lattice relaxation times are dependent upon the details of molecular motion. The combined application of Raman and Infrared (IR) lineshape analysis can furnish more complete information to characterize the anisotropic rotation of molecules. Presented here are the studies of NMR relaxation times, together with Raman/IR Mneshape analysis of the solvent and temperature dependence of rotational diffusion in 1,3,5-tribromobenzene and 1,3,5-trifluorobenzene. In these experiments, it was found that the rotational diffusion constants calculated from Perrin's stick model were two to three times smaller than the measured values of D, and D,,. Similarly, rotational diffusion constants predicted by the Hu-Zwanzig slip model were too large by a factor of 2. Application of the newer Hynes-Kapral-Weinberg model furnished rotational diffusion constants that were in reasonable agreement with the experimental results. The vibrational peak frequencies and relaxation times of the isotropic Raman spectra of the υ1 modes of CD2Br2 and CHBr3 were studied in solution. The frequency shifts in non-interactive solvents were explained well on the basis of solution variations in the dispersion energy. In Lewis bases, the displacements were in some, but not all, cases greater than predicted. On the other hand, it was found that the vibrational relaxation times of the C-H/C-D modes decreased dramatically in all Lewis base solvents. Therefore, it was concluded that relaxation times of the υ1 modes, rather than frequency shifts, furnish a more reliable measure of hydrogen bonding interactions of halomethanes in solution.

Magnetic losses in maganese zinc ferrites: the role of sinterization and microstructural parameters.

Lázaro Colán, Victoria Amelia 21 May 2010 (has links)
The use of manganese zinc ferrite in power sources of battery chargers is growing, due to its low magnetic power losses at inductions around 0.2 T. These ferrites belong to the soft magnetic materials group, they are polycrystalline ferromagnetic oxides with face centered cubic structure. Powders of this material were compacted in uniaxial press and in automatic press of production, by ring and toroidal form, respectively. Two firing cycles, varying the atmosphere oxygen content between 5 and 15%, were applied to evaluate its effect on microstructure, density, magnetic losses in high induction and permeability. Samples sintered in warmer positions inside the furnace resulted in higher density and larger grain size, as expected, but higher losses at 25 °C were achieved. Increasing the atmosphere oxygen content from 5 to 15% did not alter density significantly, but resulted in a slight increase in grain size. On the other hand, the correlation between oxygen content and losses was complex. There are lower losses, at 60 °C. Similar behavior was observed with hysteresis loss, which is compatible with the change in magnetocrystalline magnetic anisotropy (K1). Measurements were performed from 25 to 100 °C, at 0.2 T, aiming at the evaluation of the effect of temperature on the two parcels of hysteresis loss. Samples sintered at 1290 °C with low atmosphere oxygen content showing a minimum on the losses versus temperature curve. The available techniques to analyze Fe2+ content were not capable of establishing, unequivocally, the expected relation between this variable and the oxygen content of the sintering atmosphere.

Nanobastões magnéticos baseados em FePt: síntese, caracterização e auto-organização visando aplicação em gravação magnética de ultra-alta densidade / Magnetics FePt nanorods: synthesis, characterization and self-assembly for ultra-high magnetic density recording application

Silva, Tiago Luis da 21 February 2011 (has links)
Recently, self-assembled FePt nanoparticles (NP) in face-centered tetragonal phase (fct) has been synthesizes as potential candidates for Ultra-High Magnetic Recording Systems (UHMR) due to high magnetocrystalline anisotropy. However, the magnetic alignment of these self-assembled fct-FePt nanoparticles also has been a constant limiting factor, since the axes of easy magnetization of spherical nanoparticles are presented randomly oriented in three directions. Concerning to avoid these restrictions arising from magnetic alignment, one-dimensional NP perpendicularly oriented on the magnetic medium surface has been reported as a possible solution for texture and magnetic alignment. To date, the reported nanorods (NR) and nanowires (NW) synthesized in the literature showed face centered cubic phase (fcc) which present poor magnetocrystalline anisotropy, instead the fct desirable phase, and were found to be thermally unstable resulting in spheroidal NP after annealing required to phase transformation from fcc to fct. In this work, Fe55Pt45 NP with morphologies varying from nanospheres, NR with different lengths up to NW were synthesized by a modified polyol process. Furthermore, the synthesis conditions were adjusted to obtain FePt NP directly in fct phase. Either longitudinal or perpendicular self-assembled NR systems in a hexagonal compact array were obtained using oleic acid (OA) and oleylamine (Oam) or hexadecylamine (HAD), respectively, as molecular organic spacers. Perpendicularly oriented NR system led to magnetic alignment due to shape anisotropy and combined with the magnetic properties due to partial tetragonal phase suggest a strong future candidate to ultra-high magnetic density recording applications capable to achieve density of Terabits/in2.

Microstructure and magnetic properties of alloys for nanocristalline permanent magnetics of Sm(CoFeCuZr)z type for applications at temperature above 300°C.

Romero, Sérgio Antônio 07 December 2012 (has links)
The main objective of this study was to correlate microstructure and magnetic properties of high-energy permanent magnets of the Sm(CoFeCuZr)z type for applications at temperatures above 300°C. The possibility that the matrix constituents of the microstructure of high temperature magnets are different from the matrix constituents of the conventional magnets is investigated with three sets of samples: i) Two magnets for commercial applications at room temperature, one produced by Electron Energy and the other by Vacuumschmelze. ii) A Sm(CoFeCuZr)z as-cast alloy synthesized by Johnson Matthey (JM) for permanent magnets production was used to study the effect of heat treatment steps as follows: (a) solutionizing at 1175°C for 4h, b) followed by quenching in water, (c) reheating at 820°C for 7h, d) followed by slow cooling down at 1°C/min to 400°C, and (e) heat treatment at 400°C for different durations and their effects on its magnetic properties and its micro and nanostructure. iii) Two series of Sm(CobalFe0.15CuxZr0.023)7 and Sm(CobalFe0.15CuxZr0.023)8.5 alloys with x=0.058, 0.088, 0.108 were prepared by arc melting technique, in order to study the effect of Copper and Samarium contents on its microstructure and magnetic properties. The characterization in magnetic fields up to 9T allowed to determine the maximum polarization and the intrinsic coercivity of the samples. The characterization in magnetic field up 2T allowed to determine the coercive field and remanence of the samples at temperatures between 200°C and 500°C. Three alloys resulted in coercive field Hci > 398kA/m (Hci > 5kOe) at 450°C, which according to the literature, can be used in applications at elevated temperatures. A detailed characterization of the microstructure and chemical composition was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with EDAX chemical analysis of virtually all samples. The JM samples and three of the twelve alloys produced in the electric arc furnace showed the light and dark microconstituents, here identified as two 2:17 rombohedral phases with low and VIII high Sm. In a pseudo-ternary phase diagram it was possible to define the two phase field of 2:17R with low and high Sm. No correlation could be found with the magnetic properties of the samples. It was observed that by increasing the Sm content in the alloy the maximum induction Jmax decreases. The maximum induction Jmax also decreases with increasing Cu content in the alloy, but to a lesser extent. It was possible to observe the nanocrystalline microstructure as well as the presence and formation of nanocrystalline cells with scanning electron microscopy with field emission source SEM-FEG. Those characteristics are usually only observed by transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the nanocrystalline cells are observable with SEM-FEG on samples whose coercivity is above 159 kA/m (2kOe). It was possible to apply the Stoner-Wohlfarth model modified by Callen Liu and Cullen in the hysteresis loop to determine the magnetocrystalline anisotropy field, the saturation magnetization and the mean field interaction 1/d. The X-ray diffraction coupled with a Rietveld refinement were used to determine the phases formed at high temperatures after the solutinizing heat treatment at 1175°C/4h. It was found that there are two kinds of 2:17 rhombohedral phases formation. One is rich in copper and the other rich in iron.

Nanopartículas magnéticas metálicas recobertas com óxido de ferro: intensificação das propriedades magnéticas da nanopartícula e funcionalização para aplicação em biomedicina / Iron oxide-coated metal magnetic nanoparticles: improved magnetic properties and surface functionalization for biomedical applications

Beck Júnior, Watson 28 February 2011 (has links)
In recent years, the magnetic nanoparticles uses in many biomedical and biotechnological areas have received great attention due to their applications possibilities such as: tissue repair, diagnostics, magnetic resonance imaging, cancer treatment, cell separation, and controlled drug delivery, among others. Today, the magnetic nanoparticles applications are mainly based on magnetic iron oxides, which exhibit superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature and low saturation magnetization around 60 emu g-1. Magnetic oxide uses was based in two main reasons: easily and versatility of surface changes and functionalization due to hydroxyl groups present on the oxide nanoparticles surface, and low toxicity compared with the magnetic metallic nanoparticles. Biocompatibility and targetable functionalizations are generally obtained by paramagnetic and/or diamagnetic materials incorporations onto the nanoparticle surface contributing to decreases the already low oxide saturation magnetization. In this context, the development of new magnetic nuclei with high magnetizations values closed to the metallic iron values (~200 emu g-1) is required. However, this value is only generally observed in highly toxic metallic nanoparticles. Therefore, in this study, bimetallic magnetic nanoparticles of FePt, CoPt and NiPt coated with iron oxide and Ni- or Co-ferrites in a core-shell structure are synthesized by using the modified polyol process combined with the seed-mediated growth method. Obtained nanoparticles presented size and size distribution compatible for biomedical applications and the saturation magnetization of the different synthesized systems were enhanced compared with the pure magnetic oxide nanoparticles. Oleic acid and oleylamine present on the as-synthesized magnetic nanoparticles surface were properly changed by (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS) molecules leading to water-dispersible magnetic nanoparticles system. In addition, carboxymethyl-dextran molecules were conjugated with the APTMS molecules changing the nanoparticles surfaces and resulting in biocompatible water-soluble magnetic nanoparticles systems with improved magnetic response. These synthesized biocompatible magnetic systems present a great potential for many biomedical applications.

The compounds were prepared: according to the concept of chemical propellants and heated in the microwave oven with power 7000kw. The synthesized material was characterized by absorption spectroscopy in the infrared (FTIR), Xray diffraction (XRD) using the Rietveld refinement, specific surface area (BET) , scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with aid of energy dispersive analysis (EDS) and magnetic measurements (MAV). The results obtained from these techniques confirmed the feasibility of the method of synthesis employed to obtain the desired spinel structure, the ferrite, nickel ferrite as for nickel doped with cobalt. The results from XRD refinement ally showed the formation of secondary phases concerning stages α - Fe2O3, FeO, (FeCo)O e Ni0. On the other hand, there is an increase in crystallite size with the increase of cobalt in systems, resulting in an increased crystallinity. The results showed that the BET systems showed a reduction in specific surface area with the increase of cobalt and from the SEM, the formation of irregular porous blocks and that the concentration of cobalt decreased the agglomerative state of the system. The magnetic ferrites studied showed different characteristics according to the amount of dopant used, ranging from a very soft magnetic material (easy magnetization and demagnetization ) - for the system without cobalt - a magnetic material with a little stiffer behavior - for systems containing cobalt. The values of the coercive field increased with the increasing growth of cobalt, and the values of saturation magnetization and remanence increased up to x = 0,25 and then reduced. This work is to prepare stimuli-responsive porous silica materials based on solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) and magnetic surfactants. To develop this study, several surfactants systems were used to synthesize silica materials with controlled porosity via protocols described in the literature or developed in the laboratory. Different stimuli-responsive characters were introduced in porous silica materials as a function of system used: solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) for pH-sensitive and magnetic-sensitive surfactants for magnetic silica materials. First, the materials synthesized with solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) were used for the delivery of an anti-carcinogenic drug, curcumin. A coating method on silica surface was also used to better control the release of curcumin. Secondly, the responsiveness to the magnetic field was introduced in silica materials using the magnetic surfactants. Their self-assembly properties (i.e. micelles, vesicles) were studied and their applications in the synthesis of magnetic porous silica materials were investigated. Finally, the magnetic solid lipid nanoparticles have been prepared by combining SLN with magnetic surfactants, which have been used for the synthesis of meso-macroporous silica catalyst encapsulating iron oxide nanoparticles.
