Spatial variation of radio frequency magnetic field exposure from clinical pulse sequences in 1.5T MRI / Spatial variation av radiofrekvent magnetfältsexponering från kliniska pulssekvenser i 1,5T MRTForsberg, Andreas January 2014 (has links)
Cell biological exposure studies in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) environment, where a complex mixture of strong magnetic fields are present, have attracted considerable interest in recent years. The outcome of such studies might depend strongly on the conditions, for example exposure parameters and spatial variations of exposure. The aim of this thesis has been to give a detailed description of how the radio frequency (RF) magnetic field varies with position and sequence choice within an MRI bore from a patient perspective and to highlight the need of better consistency in future research. Method: A straightforward theoretical description on the contribution to the RF magnetic field from a birdcage coil is given. A one dimensional coaxial loop antenna has been used as a probe to measure spatial variations of the RF magnetic field in a 1.5T MRI scanner. An exposure matrix containing RF magnetic field strength (H1-field) amplitudes in three dimensions was constructed and used to study several clinical protocols and sequences. A qualified correspondence measurement was also made on a 3T MRI scanner. Results: Around isocenter, for a common field-of-view (FOV), changes in exposure conditions were small; however, rapid changes of exposure conditions occurred upon approaching the end rings. The dominating H1-field component switched from lying in the xy-plane to pointing the z-direction and was roughly 3 times larger than in isocenter. Practical difficulties indicate even larger differences at positions not measurable with the equipment at hand. The strongest H1-field component was 32.6 A/m at position (x,y,z)=(-24,8,24) cm from the isocenter. Conclusions: Machine parameters such as repetition time, echo time and flip angle have little to do with actual exposure. Specic absorption rate (SAR) values correlated well with the square of measured root-mean-square (RMS) values of the magnetic field (B1,RMS) but not with peak values of the magnetic field (B1,peak), indicating that peak values are not unlikely to be part of compromising factors in previous contradictory exposure research on genotoxicity. Furthermore exposure conditions depend strongly on position and unfavorable situations may occur in the periphery of the birdcage coil. Potentially elevated risks for conducting surfaces, for example arms or external fixations, in the proximity of the end rings, are proposed. Aside from spatial variation consideration on which type of geometry exposed cell-biological samples are placed in should be held since eddy currents, hot-spots and proper SAR depend on geometry. Conditions may vary considerably between in-vitro, ex-vivo and in-vivo studies since geometries of test tubes, petri dishes and humans differ.

Petrophysic of the Host-rock to the Ore in the Lovisa Mine, Bergslagen / Petrofysik hos det malmnära sidoberget i Lovisagruvan, BergslagenGilljam Päärt, Oscar January 2019 (has links)
The Bergslagen region has three base-metal mines operating today, and one of them is the Lovisa mine, which host a Zn-Pb-Ag deposit. The Lovisa mine is located in the Guldsmedshyttan area north of Lindesberg. The mine is part of in the X-Mine H2020 project that includes four different mines with the aim of an improved environmental resource management. The project aims at reducing the environmental impact from transport, ore processing and chemical handling as well as result in lowering the costs per produced amount of metal. The purpose for this thesis is to determine the petrophysical characteristics of the host rocks to the thin tabular mineralised units in the Lovisa mine with petrophysics. Petrophysics is used to obtain information about the physical properties of rocks, which is then is integrated with geophysics and the geology, to obtain an improved understanding about the different geophysical anomalies. The petrophysic methods used here, reviled three different physical properties of the rocks: density, magnetic volume susceptibility and natural remanent magnetization. These properties were measured on five different drill cores and correlated with the literature data and lithologies of the core. The lithologies close to the ore correspond to literature data for volcanic siltstone, volcanic sandstone, massive rhyolite, skarn (calc-silicates) and dolomite. Dolomite is not present in the cores and corresponds to breccia, volcanic sandstone and skarn. My conclusion for this method, is that in order to do a lithological interpretation based on the measured petrophysical properties, is that a good knowledge of the lithologies as well as a good understanding of the geological processes that have affected the rocks in the investigated area are required. / H2020 X-mine

Rock Magnetic Studies of Magnetite and Quartzite: Results at Ambient Conditions and From Diamond Anvil Pressure Experiments (~2 GPa) / Magnetiska studier av magnetit och kvartsit:Resultat vid rumsförhållanden och från diamantstädcell (DAC) högtrycksexperimentDaniil, Dimitra January 2021 (has links)
Numerous techniques are used to study the magnetic history and properties of rocks, which provides important data on the Earth’s interior. In this study we conducted a series of experiments on two different sample sets, comprising pure magnetite (Set1) and a mixture of magnetite-hemoilmenite-bearing quartzite (Set2), in order to gather information about their magnetic susceptibility and remanent magnetization. A miniature diamond anvil cell (mDAC) constructed from hardened non-magnetic alloy (40HNU) was used for high pressure experiments. With the help of high sensitivity susceptibility bridge (MFK1-FA Kappabridge, AGICO), we measured the susceptibility of three samples and of the mDAC. Consequently, we loaded one of the samples in the mDAC and acquired susceptibility measurements during the compression and decompression of the system. For remanence measurements we used a 2G Enterprises SQUID magnetometer. We measured the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) and performed alternating field (AF) demagnetization on ten samples and on the mDAC. Additionally, isothermal and anhysteretic remanent magnetization (IRM and ARM) acquisition were performed on nine and one samples, respectively and demagnetization on three and one samples, respectively. Results showed that Set1 samples consist of both SD and MD magnetite grains. Regarding Set2 samples, the main magnetic carriers are SD and MD magnetite or titanium bearing magnetite grains, while there are indications that hematite and ferrimagnetic titanohematite might be present as well. The presence of eddy currents, due to the conducting materials of the mDAC, resulted in masking the signal of the sample making it difficult to draw any safe conclusions regarding how the susceptibility of the sample changes with pressure. All in all, there was a satisfactory response of the instruments working with very small amounts of material and an adequate signal stability of both the samples and the mDAC. Our study provided us with an insight into high pressure experiments and showed possible directions for future studies.

With a growing population on earth the amount of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) and other scrap steel increases. The European Directive 2000/53/CE” requires a minimum of 95 % reuse and recovery and 85 % re-use and recycling no later than 1 January 2015, for end-of life vehicles. This imposes a need for more efficient recycling and recovery. Despite this shredder residue (SR) is commonly land filled. This report investigated the magnetic fines residue generated at Stena Metall shredder facility in Halmstad, Sweden. Magnetic fines is a complex material containing e.g. ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals, glass, plastic, rubber, polyurethane, sand, dirt, brominated flame retardants and PCB. Characterisation of the material and discussion around area of application resulted in suggestions for possible recycling alternatives. Characterisation included e.g. particle size, total organic content, x-ray fluorescence, x-ray powder diffraction and elemental analysis with a focus on the metals. The results indicated a higher organic content in larger particles and an increasing content of e.g. lead, cadmium and mercury in smaller particles. X-ray fluorescence can be used to measure lead in magnetic fines. The conclusion was that the combustible organic content needs to be separated before further metal recycling can be applied. If magnetic fines should be used in construction pollutants probably either needs to be removed or encapsulated to prevent exposure to humans and environment.

Variations in the target definition on CT and MR based treatment plans for radiotherapy / Skillnader mellan definition av targetvolym på CT och MR baserade behandlingsplaner för strålterapiSvensson, Sara January 2014 (has links)
The introduction of Magnetic Resonance (MR) Imaging in treatment planning for radiotherapy of prostate cancer give rise to new challenges in defining the treatment volume, or the target. Imaging with MR have several advantages, especially better soft-tissue contrast, compared with the standard image modality, Computed Tomography (CT). The purpose of this project was to determine how the target definition varies with the choice of image modality and the systematic differences between them. The purpose was also to determine how the inter- and intra physician variability influences the delineation, depending on which image modality that is used. In the project, five physicians delineated the prostate gland on CT and MR images for nine patients. The physicians had no information of which image series that was connected, and were thus delineating independent. After the delineation, the CT and MR image series was set in the same geometrical coordinate system in the treatment planning system Oncentra. The target delineations were analysed by comparing the radial distances from the centre of mass in different directions, such as anterior, posterior, etc. The radial distances were later used to evaluate the variability of the delineations and to determine the inter and intra physician variability in different directions of the targets. ANOVA was also preformed to determine if there is a significant difference between the parameters, as the image modality and the image modalities influence on the physicians delineations. A model was made to investigate how the MR delineations differ from a CT defined volume that 95% of the delineations cover, called the ideal CT delineation. From this, the median deviation in different directions was analysed and it was found that the median value of the MR delineations in different directions was between -0.10-2.27 mm larger than the ideal CT delineation. The fluctuations between the delineations was, however, large. The target volume was larger for CT defined volumes in 87% of the cases, compared with MR targets. The inter physician variability was found to be between 0.54-2.17 mm for the CT based delineations and 0.68-2.08 mm for the MR based target delineations. The intra physician variability was larger than the inter physician variability, between 0.74-2.51 mm for CT based delineations and 0.85-1.45 mm for MR based delineations. The median variability of the delineations were not uniform around the target volume but were larger for example in the superior and inferior directions and had its minimum in the posterior direction. The ANOVA tests showed a significant difference between MR and CT based target delineations, it also shows a relation between the delineating physician and the image modality, meaning that the physicians are delineating different on CT and MR images. Target volumes defined on MR images are in general smaller than the CT defined targets. The soft tissue contrast in MR images makes the delineating process easier, however, the analysis of the variability in this project indicates that the variations of MR based target delineations are larger than the CT based. The large variation of the delineations implies that clinical tests should be made to ensure a proper dose coverage before MR could be used as the only image modality in radiotherapy treatment planning of prostate cancer.
