Maatian Manhood: A Cultural Model Toward Geru-Maa

Atwater, Rasheed Jamal 08 1900 (has links)
The hegemonic Eurocentric culture that dominates the United States accultures African American men into an ideal of Manhood that is antithetical to their being. “Man-Up” an emotional deflective and dominating command, has been a bedrock of African American dislocation to their journey towards Manhood. By returning to an African epistemology and culture rooted in the search for Ma’at, African men throughout the diaspora and within the United States can recover a humane and culturally dislocated definition of Manhood that works in concert with their women, environment, and the cosmological order. This dissertation examines the standard of Manhood in Kemet; whether African American men have sought Ma’at in their description of Manhood; and finally, explores how the Maatian standard of Manhood may reorient African American men into a cultural norm that harmonizes families, communities, and ecologies. There is no overarching question for this work. Still, one central focus is to liberate African men from colonizing cultural models of Manhood and reorient them with an African cultural idea founded on the principle of Ma’at. / Africology and African American Studies

Behind closed doors : new images of manhood

Harris, Wesley 01 January 2010 (has links)
As an artist and stay-at-home father of two daughters, issues of masculinity and gender roles are vivid aspects of my daily experience. It takes confidence for a man to live outside the domestic status quo. However, I doubt my ability to fulfill this role. My art is an observation of my character, and projecting it onto a greater conversation of contemporary manhood. My inclination toward realist self-portraiture is the most sincere way I can offer to express my ideas of personal and contemporary masculinity, and the imagery I am creating occupies both physical and psychological states of engagement. Our personalities are most honest when played out behind closed doors. By lifting the veil of privacy, I can bring both you and me into a personal space that I intend to be both inviting and unsettling, a shared moment and voyeuristic in nature. This thesis documents the creation of a body of paintings based on self-portraiture, personal experiences, and a greater conversation about men, fathers, and artists.

Hidden, visceral and traumatic: a dramaturgical approach to men talking about their penis after surgery for penile cancer

Branney, Peter, Witty, K. 05 November 2019 (has links)
Yes / Drawing upon concepts of expressive equipment and body image, the aim of this study is to explore how men diagnosed and treated for penile cancer construct their penis and its surgical disfigurement (penectomy). Using maximum variation sampling with the intention to acquire the broadest range of experiences of stage of disease and treatment, 27 cisgender men (aged 48-83, x=63) who had surgical treatment consented for their data to be archived for analysis. From a dramaturgical perspective, the constructionist thematic analysis explored direct and indirect talk about the penis after surgery. The analysis showed that through graphic and sequential narratives of dismemberment revealed, participants constructed a post-surgery period in which they both wanted and did-not-want to see their penis. Additionally, participants constructed themselves managing difficult emotions through others and seeing themselves being rejected by a potentially desiring (female) Other. The findings extend research on male genitals by showing how the post-surgery penis can function as something hidden but visceral and traumatic when revealed. Importantly, this paper illustrates body image as expressive equipment where body and identity are formed in the image of manhood, which is an intersubjective (sexual) object between self and other. / This paper presents independent research commissioned by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) under its Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) Programme (Grant Reference Number PB-PG-0808-17158). / Research Development Fund Publication Prize Award winner, October 2019.

"Det är såhär en riktig man ska vara" : En retorisk analys av hur manlighet framställs i podcasts / ”This is how a real man should be” : A rhetorical analysis of how masculinity is produced in podcasts

Wahlström, Lisa, Allert, Terese January 2012 (has links)
This study examines how masculinity is portrayed in podcasts. Our original material consisted of four episodes of C/o Hannah & Amanda and four episodes of Filip & Fredrik's podcast. We analyzed the programs both individually and in comparison to each other. Using a rhetorical analysis, we found that the perception of men in the podcasts conforms to societal norms. The theoretical basis underlying our analysis can be expected to strengthen our findings and made us also realize that the image of masculinity is constantly evolving.

Reflexe příběhu Neda Kellyho v umělecké a memoárové literatuře / Fictional Man: Ned Kelly in Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang in Comparison with Older Portrayals

Prentis, Adam January 2013 (has links)
TITLE: The Fictional Man: Ned Kelly in Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang in Comparison with Older Portrayals AUTHOR: Adam Prentis DEPARTMENT: Department of English Language and Literature SUPERVISOR: PhDr. Petr Chalupský, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: The thesis concerns itself with the analysis of various personality aspects of the protagonist of Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang (2000) - Ned Kelly. Albeit a historical figure, Ned Kelly is approached as a fictional character with focus placed on his symbolic status of Australian nationality, myth and manhood, and on the literary means that point to this. The separate aspects are placed in an evolutionary context through comparisons with older portrayals of the same character - in Max Brown's Australian Son (1948) and J. J. Kenneally's The Complete Inner History of the Kelly Gang and their Pursuers (1929), all of which use a heroising approach to the man. The work shows that Ned Kelly may be perceived in many complex ways, with further possibilities for analysis suggested. Comparing the three books, it is found that although considerable unifying tendencies and moments exist, some aspects have a significant difference in focus or emphasis. A shift is noted from a confrontational idealising defence of what is perceived as a historical person to a...

Racism Recognized and the Reformation of the South in Ernest Gaines‘

Session, La Toya 17 December 2011 (has links)
According to Ernest Gaines‘ personal experiences as a Southerner, without addressing the history of slavery, the quest for human dignity becomes meaningless. The discourses and the ideologies of the characters in AGathering of Old Men represent a call for social change. A Gathering of Old Men is however, more than just a novel about whites dominating blacks; it is a novel about the fight for humanity in spite of the threat of a new social order. The social repercussions of slavery and the denial of black manhood are central issues in A Gathering of Old Men, but Gaines also exhibits ways in which the demand for a social change in our society can bring about racial harmony.

The main argument to implement modern technology was to reduce the famine in the planet. Therefore, thousands of Brazilian peasants were affected by such transformations. Some of them changed their way and were assimilated; others, were sent away from the rural area, while others still resist to the agricultural modernization process. The main verified changes were: the physical energy was being substituted by mechanic energy, where motorized equipment were present; in the genetic field, the seeds and hybrid races substituted the common or creole ones and, in chemistry, the intensive use of synthetic fertilizers and poisons altered the relation between the farmer and the environment. In Vicente Dutra- RS, small municipality, situated at northwest region of Rio Grande do Sul State, started having agricultural modernization around 1960. Among the main consequences it could be highlighted the rural deterritorialization, where hundreds of families were deterritorialized from the field activity, the great majority moving to cities searching for a place to live and work, decreasing, consequently, the local community in absolute number. Although many transformations occurred, many peasants continue to develop an agriculture of resistance to the agricultural modern process and they keep important links to field agriculture. In the field can be noticed significant changes, such as: alterations to traditional alimentation; solidarity gave room to individuality; soil was degraded, increasing the cost of production; streams and rivers were poisoned, and the commercial land dominated the landscape. The rural territory of Vicente Dutra-RS shows, in its great part, the faces of agricultural modernization. Even though, it is possible to identify some forms of reaction to the thought of agricultural modernization, such as: the growing of traditional subsistence; cooperativism, and initiatives of transformation of production to direct sale to the final consumer. Therefore, the agricultural modernization installed in Vicente Dutra-RS is partial, and the peasants keep, even with certain difficulty, their traditional uses and customs.

Ingen liten lort? : En textanalys om manlighet i Värnpliktsnytt åren 1971-1991 / Not a piece of dirt? : A textanalysis of masculinity Värnpliktsnytt 1991-1971

Trulsson, Linnea, Johansson, Edvard January 2013 (has links)
This essay examines masculinity in the Swedish military paper Värnpliktsnytt during 1971-1991. The purpose is to study the masculine norms and the hegemonic masculinity that Värnpliktsnytt conveys during these years. Värnpliktsnytt was handed out for free to all soldiers during 1971-2010. During the 1970’s the women were only allowed on non-combat posts and in the 1980’s they more and more were included and accepted as soldiers and staff in the military. In 1989 women were allowed to apply for active and non-combat duty in all military sectors. This affected the masculine ideal of Värnpliktsnytt, and the desirable view of man started to change. Before the 1980’s strong men in the ranger divisions constituted the hegemonic masculinity’s peak, but during this decade the regular conscripted soldiers with more individual thought and softer feelings rose in the hegemonic hierarchy. Also with the common debate on gender equality men in the military was encouraged to take a bigger part in the home life and to act more responsible towards the upbringing of the children. Apart from the duty to family, the military duty is also central to the masculinity in Värnpliktsnytt during the whole examined period. Men are expected to fulfill their military duty, although it is accepted to complain about wage andworking conditions. The overall results points in the direction that the ideal man becomes more complex.
