Like A Woman: Playing The Homosexual As Truth In Kiss Of The Spider WomanaBeaman, Michael 01 January 2009 (has links)
Identity, who we are, is at the core of every human being, thus at the core of every character from every play. How the character identifies his self through gender and sexual identity will shape both physical and emotional choices that an actor will make through the rehearsal process. As an actor, it is absolutely imperative to resist the urge to pass judgment on the characters we portray. As more characters in modern drama are openly gay, there is an increasing urge for an actor to fall into campy stereotypes. Through a performance of the role of Molina in Manuel Puig's Kiss of the Spider Woman, this thesis will examine the blurring line of gender identity of the leading man in contemporary drama and explore the challenges of portraying a feminine man in a non-stereotypical way, remaining true to the identification of the character. A thorough historical analysis presents a look at the evolution of the homosexual throughout modern drama, from self-loathing party boys of the seventies to ordinary fathers, husbands, and sons in modern households. A structural analysis of Puig's text will aid in the choices made by the actor. Lastly, a complete character analysis will examine the psychological motivations behind Molina's actions as well as the changes in his gender and sexual identity throughout the piece. This thesis will culminate in a comprehensive development, rehearsal and performance journal, which will document and address challenges, discoveries, failures and victories during the production process.

Manuel Ponce: Father of Mexican Nationalistic MusicSanchez Gutierrez, Guillermo 25 April 2024 (has links) (PDF)
The influence of Manuel Ponce (1882-1948) in early 20th-century Mexico serves as a precursor to the emerging nationalistic sounds sought after the 1910 revolution. Despite the challenges posed by Mexico's music education system, Ponce's private tutelage enabled him to achieve European standards, marking a significant progress in the broader efforts of 19th-century Mexican musicians to attain proper musical training. Ponce's method of creating an authentic Mexican sound involved reconstructing folklore music, blending it with European styles, and aligning himself with the Indigenismo movement. His compositional trajectory, marked by trips to Europe and distinct musical periods such as Romanticism, Nationalism, and Modernism, reflects adaptation to historical, social, and cultural events. Upon his return to Mexico, he undertook the reform of teaching methods at the conservatory, adapting European approaches to better suit the learning styles of Mexican students. This study examines Ponce's formative experiences, educational background, and early compositions, emphasizing his integration of folk tunes into classical forms and his role in shaping Mexican musical identity. It highlights the efforts of 19th-century Mexican composers to carve a nationalistic sound and Ponce's pivotal role as a bridge between European traditions and the developing nationalistic movement, ultimately contributing to the construction of Mexican cultural hegemony

Native Sovereignty, Narrative Argument, and an International Shift: The 1974 Rhetoric of George Manuel and Vine Deloria, Jr.Dyson, Charles Wesley 03 August 2004 (has links)
The modern era of globalization presents a situation where indigenous cultures are potentially being eroded away. As a result, leaders of these groups need to begin using effective rhetorical strategies in their efforts to defend their worldview against the dominating views of Western ideology. This thesis attempts to present a case study analysis of the work of two leaders in the Native American rights movement: George Manuel and Vine Deloria, Jr. Manuel's book The Fourth World: An Indian Reality and Deloria's Behind the Trail of Broken Treaties: An Indian Declaration of Independence are presented as examples for how modern indigenous leaders can use narrative argument, addressing the persuasive functions of social movements, to foster political action on a people-to-people, national, and transnational level. / Master of Arts

Eriksson, Lisa January 2013 (has links)
The kiss of the spider woman, novel written by Argentinian novelist Manuel Puig, is the story oftwo prisoners in a prison in Buenos Aires during the military dictatorship. Manuel Bandeira e a claridade: confluências literárias entre o modernismo brasileiro e o cabo-verdiano / Manuel Bandeira and Claridade: literary confluences of Brazilian and Cape Verdean ModernismPaula, Julio Cesar Machado de 13 March 2006 (has links)
This work analyzes the importance of Manuel Bandeira?s poetry, in the context of Brazilian literary Modernism, for the group of Cape Verdean authors responsible for the publication of Claridade magazine, especially in its first phase, in 1936 and 1937. Emphasis is given to some aspects that contributed to the literary confluence existent between these authors, such as the similarities of cultural formation, the quest for a Modernism that could function as a bridge between the literary heritage and the formal esthetic innovation, and the utopian nature of the literature. The intention is to contribute to a new reading of the Brazilian poet, stressing aspects that were relegated to the background, and, as a result, promoting a valorization of the Cape Verdean authors as agents in the vast system composed of all literatures written in the Portuguese language.

Pinheiro Chagas, um escritor olvidado / Pinheiro Chagas, a forgotten writerGandra, Jane Adriane 09 August 2012 (has links)
This study is intended to reflect about the literary understudied character, Manuel Pinheiro Chagas (1842-1895), portuguese writer considered by public opinion mainly as historical novelist. Choosing the historical novel as romance narrative, seems that Chagas tries to establish space with the realistic/naturalist novel, even after the Realism consolidation. Analyzing four of his novels, A virgem Guaraciaba (1865), A máscara Vermelha (1873) and its continuation O juramento da Duquesa (1873), and A descoberta da Índia. Contada por um marinheiro (1890), we could verify how the literary project from this author, that initiates itself with the history creation, starts to converge to a type of less romanticized realism, that he defines as romantic historical study.

A defesa do camonista Manuel de Faria e Sousa no Tribunal do Santo Ofício de Lisboa (1640) / The text Informacion (1640), written by the Portuguese polygraph Manuel de Faria e Sousa, as an answer to the Lisbon InquisitionNishihata, Mauricio Massahiro 04 December 2014 (has links)
The present Master\'s Dissertation proposes to analyze the text Informacion |1640|, written by the Portuguese polygraph Manuel de Faria e Sousa (1590-1649), from the Rhetorical and Poetic sources that guided its structuration as a defense genre. The sixteenth-century discourse proposed to the analysis is drafted subsequent to the sentence promulgated by the Mesa Pequena do Tribunal do Santo Ofício de Lisboa, which prohibits the circulation of the Comentarios aos Lusiadas, by the above-named scholar, since its publication in 1639. The substrate of accusatory action strongly disapproves of the allegories found in the censored book, which are constructed with a religious meaning based on the mythological plot of the heroic poem by Luís de Camões. Manuel de Faria justifies in Informacion the intricate mechanisms which lead to the proposed allegorical interpretation. Because we are dealing with an answer of a defendant to complaints brought by the book reviewer priests, it is worth bringing in Appendix the unpublished records of the Lisbon Inquisition (Ms.Port.5280.381* The Houghton Library, Harvard University), transcribed by us here, crucial to the understanding about the censorship imposed to the known book of Comments.

[en] NELSON RODRIGUES MEETS MANUEL BANDEIRA IN THE OBSESSIVE MEMORIES OF RUA ALEGRE / [pt] O ENCONTRO DE NELSON RODRIGUES E MANUEL BANDEIRA NAS LEMBRANÇAS OBSESSIVAS DA RUA ALEGREANDRE COLSON SCORZA 17 August 2004 (has links)
[en] Through the dialogue between the writings of Nelson
Rodrigues and Manuel Bandeira`s poetry, an attempt is made
to overcome some of the prejudice that marks the reception
of Nelson Rodrigues`s work. Rodrigues reread reality on
his very own way, but never failing to show the truth, or A
vida como ela. (Life As It Is). The subtle line between
the real and the fictional, journalism and literature, is
the hallmark of his work; reality turns into news copy,
which is ficcionalized into crônicas, which are made into
short stories, which turn into plays, which turn into
novels, which turn back into plays. The sexual motif is
central in Rodrigues`s work, but his discourse is always a
defense of love. If Bandeira`s poetry is a passionate
search, so is Rodrigues`s writing, as it represents human
beings` unceasing search for erotic gratification; in this
way he achieved in prose everything that Manuel had done in
poetry.

Manuel Pinheiro Chagas (1842-1895) was, in his time, an influential personality who took active part both in the field of literature and in politics. Moreover, he was the author of a multiform work with popular characteristics, read, in his time, with much interest and enthusiasm. Nevertheless, today, the literary erasure of this writer from the Portuguese canon is unquestionable, placed somewhere under the shadow of even second-rate writers. The central aim of this work is to show in Manuel Pinheiro Chagas\'s literary trajectory those facts which, in a decisive way, made him disappear from the canon. It will be shown that in these events Eça de Queirós plays a central role. He not only managed to erase Chagas\'s important participation as a politician, a critic, a historian, and a prose writer, but reduced the figure of his foe by immortalizing it in the satire-portrait of a conservative, reactionary patriot, under the code-name of \"Brigadier from the time of D. Maria II\".
